I haven't been on H&V for a while and I'm sure you are all as concerned as me about our prospects of another season of relegation dodging.
Sorry if you've covered my concerns in other threads but I just wanted to hear some other thoughts.
It seems to me that Keane is now our manager-in-waiting and Lambert has been told by Lerner to play the players who we're paying big wages, and the 'young and hungry' policy has been well and truly binned.
Given is now 'back in the fold' and is going to be at least our sub keeper after Steer has been loaned out. Why? He's a poor 'keeper.
Lowton, who looked a quality player the season before, is now going to be loaned out and replaced with Hutton because he's dared to answer back to Lambert apparently.
Lambert's success in spotting left backs is highlighted by the binning of Luna, Bennett, the letting go of Bertrand and also Stephens (I know he didn't sign him) to be replaced with the relegation-hardened Richardson.
Senderos is going to be Vllar's replacement? Jesus I hope not. Three centre backs this season with Bacuna and Richardson as wing backs? But what's the sense of loaning out the back up full backs when we have an injury or two?
Sylla gone and Helenius and Tonev? Even less depth in the squad..great work Mr. Lambert. Everyone could see they were out of their depth though.
Joe Cole our creative hub? Agbonlahor still going to play his four games a season? Weimann to play his usual 3 minutes a match?
Benteke not fit until October, so Bent up front?
Kozak won't be fit for a while yet, but when he is he will continue his great impersination of Tony Cascarino and has the turning circle of a HGV.
And the return of Charles N'Zogbia after his 'mystery' injury?
I for one am not looking forward to the next few months, I'm pretty certain with the squad we've got we'll be in the bottom three.
What does everyone else think about our chances this season?
Can anyone give me any hope?
Love
Oscar

These questions, and many others, will be answered in the next episode of Soap.
-
Help us Obi Wan Benteke, you're our only hope.
-
We went into transition under Houllier. Then another deeper one with TSM. Then another transition with PL. And now another with limbo announcement and reversal of the previous strategy.
We are in deep transition and close to the vortex. We may even meet ourselves coming
back.

i've been told that, what do I do - give up and die?

I am utterly convinced we will be relegated next season. Along with the baggies and Burnley. My only hope is that I am usually completely wrong about these things.
Champions league then?

No, we have all been focused on our top half push.
Now you mention it though, those are some worrying things.

Burnley WBA and us to go is 40/1. For insurance purposes may have £30 on it.

Don't because one of the others will stay up.
-
I've never been less positive or optimistic about an upcoming season. When the fuck are we going to sign some players that will at least give us half a chance of staying up? Because with this squad we are going down quicker than a £5 hooker. For heavens sake Lerner DO SOMETHING.

This thread like many other similar ones is like watching Sky News all day. Repetition is the order of the day. There is no point in sticking more pins into this dead body at the moment!

I have never read so much shit in all my life.
Kozak - Cascarino?
Mystery Injury
Gabby 4 games a season?
Thinking that Senderos, Richardson and Cole don't provide more depth than Sylla, Helenius and Tonev, coupled with the return of Bent, Hutton, Grealish and eventually Kozak.
Quite possibly one of the most pathetic, bed wetting posts I have ever read. Get a grip.
-
To be fair Gabby does play well in about 4 games a season. His goal output is rubbish.

Hopefully we should see some new signings soon.
-
I'm also seriously concerned about how we will cope this season, Lambert's football is terrible to watch and so ineffective it's not funny.
My only hope is that with Keane's help things might not go tits up but things aren't looking good so far, this squad needs investment ASAP.
-
I'm bloody excited. We're going to be ace!

What is Lambert's football? I still don't know. He barely seems to have a preferred formation. There's no discernible style.
Sit back, try not to concede and hope one of the big lads or one of the fast lads does something at the other end...
Pathetic.

We're not going to be as bad as people expect and be nowehere near as good as we should be.

We're not going to be as bad as people expect and be nowehere near as good as we should be.
I think that's about right.
-
I've never looked to a new season with lower expectations than I have at the moment. If any other club had the owner, manager and players that we have, I'd have them down as certainties for relegation.
-
So Lerner decides to fly over 10 days before the big kick-off? It was obvious to everyone months ago that this squad needed strengthening - the guy is a joke.
-
I think we need more threads where we can say that Villa are shit. Can just not get enough of them.
-
I'm bloody excited. We're going to be ace!
Couldn't agree more. I shall be astonished if we don't win the title at least. Ideally I'm looking for the domestic treble.
-
Well, we've already won a trophy at Houston.

Well, we've already won a trophy at Houston.
Seeing as how Man U are counting the thing they were given from their friendly tournament as Van Gaal's first trophy I think the pot we received in Houston definitely counts.

Without being a complete pessimist, in todays market, what exactly will the 10m he is freeing up get us? The issue with signings in recent years has been the amount of squad filler we have bought. Some have worked out, some havent so im not going to pick that apart. I think with the return of the bomb squad lads combined with the free transfers the squad is big enough....we now need real quality that can win us games and I dont believe you will get much of it for 10m.

They'll still finish below us.
We're strengthening too though. We may not be Bayern Munich, but our squad's stronger than last season.
-

I reckon they have about three players who I would put in our first XI.
If you squads remain the same and Albion finish above us then Irvine will have done a better job than Lambert.

I think I'd agree with that. I would take Lescott, Morrison and probably Olsson (regrettably) into our starting XI, with Beharino and Foster at a push. We still have a better starting XI, player for player.

I'd have said Lescott, Mulumbu and whichever of Morrison or Sessegnon is currently on form.
I wouldn't swap Guzan for Foster, Berahino for Kozak or Benteke and certainly not Olsson for Vlaar.
One thing on West Brom this season, they'd better hope they're safe by the end of April - their last five are Liverpool, Man Utd, Newcastle (away), Chelsea and Arsenal.

I'd have Vlaar, Lescott and Olsson in a back 3 and would consider playing Berahino in place of either Gabby or Weimann. I'd be happy with either Guzan or Foster, don't think there's anything between them.
It does raise an interesting question though - do you think there's the potential for Benteke and Kozak to form a successful partnership, or will Kozak largely be used as Benteke's understudy when both fit?

I'm pretty certain that £10m will get us a better Centre mid duo than KEA and Westwood. That's what I'm hoping.

The worry would be that it's the same manager who bought that pairing that would be spending the money again.

I'm confused. Is this 10 million quid the same 10 million quid that Lambert was supposed to have at the start of the window, or is it an extra 10 million quid.?
-

Different. We blew the first £10m on insuring Joe Cole.

James Morrison and Olsson. Is this a joke?
Morrison has one good game in 20, and that is only if one of his 100 shots hits the back of the net for once.
Olsson has been dire for 2 years now, maybe even 3.
Living of past reputations outside the club, but all my mates lost faith in him a long time ago.
-
If there is 10m to spend then I'd do an Everton (Barry) and set aside a chunk of that if we could get Milner on loan from Man City with a view to a permanent transfer once the new owners are in place.
Milner isn't happy at Man City and we might just be able to entice him back with increased investment from new owners. It would automatically strengthen our midfield and probably secure our Premiership status for another season.
I'd also look into getting Ashley Young back on loan as well for a season to supply Bent and when fit Kozak and Benteke.

I loved the own goal they scored last night in their defeat at Port Vale. T'was chuckle inducing.

i'd love milner back, but he's in the last year of the contract and it would suit man city to do a permanent deal.
sure there would be clubs with far deeper pockets than us who would stump up the cash for a permanent transfer if he was made available.
-
Really we need the previously bomb squaded players to make Lambert look foolish.
-
If definitely take James Morrison. I think he's a good player. and we don't have his sort
-

Yes he's decent.

This thread is in danger of turning into the transfer speculation thread. Wtf is going on? An owner who doesn't want the club, a Manager out of his depth, not being supported. Complete shambles, however, a good quality signing might change all that. Hopefully, this is why Randy dropped by the other day.
-

-
What is going on is...nothing. Until the new owner hoves into view. And that's the problem. If I can venture a (shit) analogy here, we're a bit like a man who was on a nice swanky boat but has fallen overboard, and is treading water until help arrives.
The trouble is, even before we fell over the side, we were knackered. With a heart condition. And dodgy knees. And we'd had a skinful. And we're in the middle of nowhere. And the boat's radio is up the swanee. And there are sharks and jellyfish and stuff.
Basically, we're fooked. Question answered, lock the thread!
-
SamTheMouse sums it up perfectly.
-
The biggest worry for me, above the ownership, the management, the lack of funds, the injuries, is that I don;t think we have a decent coach in our ranks.
Sure, we don't have a brilliant squad, but we have enough players of Premiership quality to make us a Premiership Team. I just saw such little evidence that the players were being coached, either individually or tactically, last season that it scares me shitless going into next.
I've watched all of the pre-season games and the basic stuff's still there. We don't look like we've ever rehearsed what to do when we have a throw-in, in any area of the pitch. We still pass the ball around the back-line at such a slow tempo that it invites the opposition to close us down in our own defensive third and we end-up just launching a long ball upfield. When the ball is out of play there's no talking between the players, no organising. When we concede a goal, there's not even an inquest. No-one looks remotely pissed-off.
I'd hoped that Roy Keane would bring some tactical nous, some will-to-win or, at the very least, end the acceptance of not winning that we have. I'm not going to write off that hope on the back of some pre-season games, but I can't help but be worried. Very worried.
-
Yeah, What the **** is going on?! A random thread which is just rehashing a number of points already made, set up only the other day and has already got to a 4th page! You guys are once again excelling yourselves ::)
The only thing I will respond to is the comment about Given. A little unfair, he looked out of sorts in the Euros two years back because of injury. And when he has played for us has normally played behind a poor back four. He isn't the keeper he once was and I don't see him as a first choice now, but as a back up he is fine. Steer is still young, and the loan in only three months so I don't see the issue with that one.
-
Mother, mother there's too many of you crying...
Sorry, just wanted to shoehorn Marvin Gaye in given the thread title.
I have no great hopes for the season but I am prepared to at least wait until we actually start losing matches to declare it a write off. We need everything to go for us in terms of players not leaving, new signings and people staying fit but if, and it's a big if, all that happens I think we will hold our own in respectable mid table until Don Corleone comes in and spend trillions.
My optimism might be influenced by the sun shining, having some time off work and a good night out planned for tomorrow. Next week, with the season starting and the inevitable rain that ushers in with a return to work looming, things might seem very different.

Chris my friend you are not playing the internet game! The idea is to be as depressing as you can now, just post for the sake of posting. Then when we actually have a decent start to the season (with Hutton slamming a screamer in at Stoke) to post fewer times, but make up for it by beclaiming your love for Lambert, the players, and our chances of getting top six and winning some cup!
-
I think we have a number of problems, but there are three which, until they are sorted, loom over everything else and ensure things won't get much better in the meantime.
One is that the owner doesn't know what he's doing. The second is that he wants to sell us but thus far nobody has bought us, and the third is he doesn't seem to care much anymore.
I find it pointless to worry about a lot of issues - the manager, the CEO, for example - while those three big problems are still there.
It's a shame. Who'd have predicted this state of affairs eight years ago?
-

Without doubt, until the ownership issue is sorted and the club has clear direction then we can't really think about the long term. Until, then its a test of the manager, and his new number two to get the best out of what we have. We also need a few experienced heads who we know on their day can be decent players (Zog for example) to lift the team.
-
You are correct with your a reading of the core problem Paulie. My views are turning increasingly towards the lopinion that only we, the loyal fans, hold the power to have the club's problems addressed. There has grown up over the last four years a culture of shoulder shrugging and buck passing - bullying, bomb squaddery and U turns to name but three examples. Only when thirty odd thousand of us turn nasty at a game. I mean vocal not violent - will the owner come out of his torpor.
As for the season ahead I see us shipping a lot of damage in the first third of the season with improvement later. The only unknown being whether it will be enough to save us. Bad times.
-
In all seriousness, does anyone believe that this year will be anything other than one long relegation scrap? Or am I the world's biggest pessimist?
-
In all seriousness, does anyone believe that this year will be anything other than one long relegation scrap? Or am I the world's biggest pessimist?
It will be exactly that. Probably for us and 7 or 8 others.
-
Graham Taylor when he first came into the Villa, said something along the ines, of, there was a lot wrong at the club, and a big club can sink faster than a small club. Now i aint sure but if Sir Graham could see that then, and have the know how to right it, how come our current lot seem to be making that B line for the ice burg Randy wake up , your scupering all our hopes and your families money.
-
In all seriousness, does anyone believe that this year will be anything other than one long relegation scrap? Or am I the world's biggest pessimist?
I don't believe that. I think we'll be bottom of the table by October, adrift by Christmas and relegated by February. So not all that long, and not much of a scrap. And apparently you're not.
-
That's nothing, I think we'll be bottom by the end of August, adrift by September, relegated by Christmas, bankrupt by March and liquidated by the end of the season.
With Villa Park bulldozed and replaced by a new landfill site by August.
-
Too much asbestos in the North Stand to get permission for landfill. We could get up a petition to have the demolition rubble put with the remains of the old Trinity HDE so wantonly destroyed.
-

We're not even going to get to December. After 5 minutes of the Stoke game we will be so doomed that Aston Villa will implode under the weight of its own contradictions and will cease to have ever existed, erasing all of its previous history.
-
a tad too optimistic I think.
-
I think we are in for another season of struggle but to say we are as good as down seems pointless when the season hasn't even started.
Hopefully we will avoid the drop again, but they prospect of another season of crushing grimness doesn't fill one with joy.
-
This thread is turning in the NTNOCN That's Life! spoof. During the season Benteke will get appendicitis, Villa Park will be hit by a typhoon, Keane will push Lambert through a plate glass window, Vlaar will be shot by a police marksman and Delph will be eaten by a killer whale. We will all phone the electricity board and they will say "This really has nothing to do with us and the fridge we sold you".
-
Doug Ellis ploughs the millions he made from the sale of the club towards research into time travel. He whisks himself back to 1975 to retain his chairmanship and thus reap the rewards of being at the helm during the glory years of the early 80s. Incumbent manager Ron Saunders resigns in protest at his continued involvement to take the helm at neighbours Birmingham City. You can guess the rest.
-
I'm afraid it'll be much, much worse than any of you fear. Nathan Baker will continue to hold down a regular starting slot at centre-back.
-
Its even worse than you predict (except the Nathan Baker prediction) Doug Ellis invests all his money in cryogenics and has himself frozen just like Walt Disney has done. Just when we think we are out of the woods, circa 2040 who comes reversing down Trinity Rd with keys to the kingdom. Doug Ellis II.

Maybe it is like the script of Demolition Man and Doug and Ron Saunders will both be defrosted have another chance to sort out their 'issues'.
-
Lambert said at the end of last season that we needed to spend in order to avoid another season of struggle. What has Lerner done? The exact opposite. He's completely useless - a very poor judge of a given situation.
-
VF your phrase "a very poor judge of a given situation" sums it up perfectly. Worthy of the maestro of pith Darren Woolley.
-
A Given situation? I wasn't expecting any aggravation with Shay...
-
FUBAR
That's all folks!
-
To expand Brians take on things, it coud be that having 35.000 turn out every week over the last four years to watch dire football has been part of the problem, Lerner has never really seen the supporters turn feral and maybe thats what it will take to wake him up or even more potent would be a 15.000 turn out for the first home game.

Whats that saying. " A fool and his money!" not in Randolfs case.
-
just adding to my previous, NOT IN VILLA'S CASE, but his pist millions away on other interests in his life ::)

The worst since Bernie Gallagher. I don't wish any ill on the lad, because he's always tried his best. Got to blame the club for someone so sub standard starting every week.

He is as brave as any defender I've seen in c&b. Alas, he is also more limited than most.

he'd benefit from having a guide player, like partially sighted runners have guides to help them

Fearless in the tackle and in the air and gives everything for the shirt but as stated above very limited

This is the first time I have truly dreaded the season coming around, I really fear for us. I think we're so far short of what is required to compete.
-
If somebody offered us 17th, I'd snap their hand off. That's how bad things are now.
-
We are a genuine laughing stock down here. Went into my town centre today in Villa top, I've never had so many snide comments and smirks directed at me regarding football as I have had today. Tossers the lot of them.
-
One really decent signing could really change the attitude of fans and pundits. For God sake make it a decent defensive midfielder.

West Sussex?
Exactly.
Not really a Villa stronghold, DM.
They still think Bognor Regis is an exciting centre forward for the Albion.
-
I doubt many give a flying fig about us either way in West Sussex to be honest. I really can't see whether Villa are good, bad, or average being much of a hot topic there.

They probably thought it was a West Ham shirt!
-
I think we may be a better teke up team than last season, need Benteke up though

Your right. I am based in Brighton most of the year, and actually there are a few Villa supporters I have come across since moving there. Most other people who notice my Villa shirt seem to be fine with me, except a couple of idoits I bumped into the day we were thrashed by Southampton a couple of years ago (and this was before the result) who mocked me for no good reason, so I pretty much blanked them. That showed them!
-
Typical southern softies not to know that Bognor was the 200 metres champion, Cyrille Regis was the hotshot centre forward. Huh. How much of our taxes goes into education?

We aren't exactly flavour of the month up here either to be honest

Confident then?
I reckon we will be far more comfortable than we have been in the last three seasons come the end of season.

In today's Observer (and apologies if this has been quoted elsewhere) fans of the PL clubs predict their final position. No one thinks his club will finish lower than 16th (and this includes Burnley 16, QPR 15, Leicester 13, Swansea 11, West Brom 15, Palace11 and Sunderland 10) apart from our man, who has us down at 18th.
-
The opening run of games does not exactly help.
If we are outside the bottom 3 come November I will be relieved.
-
It will be the case again of relying on 3 other teams being worse than us. Burnley, Boggies and ?? QPR may struggle, they have money but fat good it did them last time and 'arry is looking past it. Newcastle nose dived the 2nd half of last season, they could be in there.....Sunderland, West Ham, Liecester and Soton?
-
I think Leicester and Southampton will struggle too. Villa can do something positive in the next few weeks by buying/loaning the right couple of players. The problem is, I don't have any faith in Paul Lambert to do that.
-
We have players back from long term injuries which will be like new signings, yes...a few more signings will make a big difference.
