I know he was never a registered player for us, but I was having a chat in the pub about the best player ever to wear the Holy Colours. All the usual suspects were named, when from somewhere in my brain I came up with George Best.
Obviously I was laughed at. But I'm sure I once saw George turn out for the Villa.
I can't remember when or why he played but I've now convinced myself it did happen. There's a pint resting on this,so can anyone help?

Yes he did against the Albion in a game played at Villa Park in a fundraiser for the Bradford fire victims.
He played a half.

Thank you gentlemen. It's coming back to me now. I'm just relieved to find out I'm not losing my marbles after all!! ;D

He played a half.
A half? About ten minutes, more like.

Was it as short as that?
I have always told my kids I saw him play for us and it was 45 minutes.....I must be getting old.

On the Sunday previous, an even greater footballer had appeared for us in a charity match.
-
Doug? Was it the Australia game?
-
I remember the great H.D. Ellis playing for us and seeing him invent the bicycle kick before our very eyes.

It wasn't against Australia (I think that was the previous season, it was certainly before), but it was Doug. It was staff v a local 'celebrity' side I believe.

The Club that has provided the highest number of England internationals must be able to count one of them as the best player ever to play in Claret and Blue.
Anyway in my memory it has to be Sir Brian.
-
From memory I'm sure Doug come on and played left wing. Well was there anyway.

I'd have thought he'd much prefer the right.

Are......that's where Benteke got the idea for his Norwich first goal last season?

I might be completely dreaming this, but I'm sure there was a news and record front cover featuring Best in the white stripey Mita copiers Hummel away shirt around '87. I thought he had played in a villa side against Nuneaton. Could be wrong though...
-
I remember reading somewhere, possibly Best's autobiography, that Ron Atkinson tried to re-sign him for Man Utd when he was about 38 years old.
-
Bestie talked about looking forward to facing Spurs in the `71 League Cup Final.
A poor mans Willie Anderson.

I think it was 1988... Allan Evans' testimonial and the first games that I attended. It was two games on the night, Villa '81 team vs another Villa Old Stars team, followed by newly-promoted Villa vs newly-promoted Walsall.
He may have played in the former game as a guest, not sure.

Found it!

Did Doug say that he was like a son to himself?
