No cup games featured here apart from the home leg vs Inter which is right at the end of the tape. A disappointing season under Jo Venglos and the last season to feature David Platt who scored 20+ goals from midfield for the second year running.

I know he's not really endeared himself to Villa fans in the intervening years, but he was some player in that period. For those that never saw him play for us, imagine a way better, international class version of Kevin Nolan.

You're right, it's practically unwatchable after a certain point.
Such a disappointing season. How the hell can any team go from runners-up to 17th place in the space of one year? I remember being so excited at the Venglos appointment, and at the early European success. But it all faded away to nothing.
I'm pretty sure this was the season when David bloody White practically beat us single-handed in one game at VP.
Still, at least we signed Penrice 8)

My memory is fading, but after starting at home against a decent Southampton team with a draw, we had to go to Man City and Liverpool in 4 days.
I went to both games, and we were markedly trying to play a more continental passing game, and we looked good. We battered Citeh, only for the cheating streak of piss Quinn to take a dive in the dying minutes, and were sucker punched again at Anfield with a John Barnes wonder strike.
It seemed to take the belief of the new ways out of the players, and we never really got going. I've often wondered what might have happened had we started a bit better, would the momentum and belief built again.

I remember that Man City match well because it was I was sat by the Wolfie on the Travellers club. The game was unbelievable, if ever I've seen such a travesty in an away game it was this one, we battered them but Andy Dibble played the game of his life. Also, the ref was blind, Quinn conned him and then Villa had several penalty appeals turned down I think man City ventured into our area twice.

I was at that David White game and you spend so long watching and concentrating on your own team you don't always notice stand outs for the opposition, it wasn't until we got back to the car and turned the radio on that we learnt he'd scored all five. Pretty sure Platty ended up in goal vs Arsenal around this time when Spinksy was sent off.
