Title: Pre-Season 2014
Post by: Clampy on April 01, 2014, 04:08:32 PM
Blimey, they're announcing them already.

Two in the States, FC Dallas and Houston Dynamo and one against Bacuna's old team Groningen in Holland.

No German tour yet then. Might be waiting on seeing if Lambert remains here.

Great news!

Done a Villa US tour in Ohion so definitely fancy Groningen.

Bremen is as close as Amsterdam so having done there a few times I fancy flying into Bremen (there are no flights to Groningen from UK)

UTV.

That part of Holland is fantastic in August or at least it can be.  Texel and the islands are well worth a visit.

The US tour will be good. Well, if you are based out here that is. I had a lovely trip down the coast to Portland a few years ago

It is first recorded in 1516 in the journal of the Portuguese explorer Duarte Barbosa.  ;)

These are the only Midlands grounds in the league I've not been to (excluding Leicester, who we won't play cos they'll be in the same division as us)...

Notts County
Shrewsbury
Oxford
Derby
Mansfield
Cheltenham
Chesterfield

Pick a couple of them please Villa, and play them on Saturdays.

Oh, and chuck in a home friendly against Bayern Munich, Barcelona or Real Madrid. Many thanks.

I would love a trip to Texas. I met a lot of batshit crazy bastards from Texas in Vegas. For a weekend on the lash, it will be great

Did I read somewhere that we have a home friendly on 9/10 August?? Presume it will be announced this week if Norwich don't win this afternoon & we are guaranteed not to be in Championship action that weekend :-) :-)

Might go for the Dutch trip myself as I've only been to Amsterdam.

Would also like a friendly against Brighton or Morecambe/Preston (if I happen to be down that part of the country at the time).

Serious though can't think about this stuff right now!

What's wrong with Texas?

Austin is a brilliant city, San Antonio is okay too. Galveston has a nice old part to it and is near the Bolivar Peninsular which looks like an alien landscape. Those places apart from what I saw having driven a good stretch of it I can only describe the place as dull.

Dallas is a dead town at weekends as everyone bombs back to their home towns as quickly as possible.

Houston - so I have heard - has some shopping malls and little else.

Austin has south by south west music festival - however wrong time of year.

As it stands the last one is 22.24, which is a bit touch and go.

Pain in the arse that game's on a midweek. Wouldn't mind looking round Chesterfield at the crooked spire and such like and I assume there are some decent pubs in the vicinity but not sure I can be arsed to fork out for a hotel for the privilege of attending.

Last time I went to Chesterfield was for our first game in the Third division. The town didn't now what had hit them, they had the Saturday market on and Villa ran through tipping over stalls, it was awful. We had three sides of the ground there were that many Villa and it was pay on the door in those days.

I was also at that game with my Dad, Villa took over the area around the ground, it seemed a really big deal for them to be playing us, think we won 3 2, although we were in Division 3 it felt exciting when we visited places like that as Villa were even then still seen as a big club.

After looking at the train fares a pleasant excursion looks less appealing. £35 return, £27 splitting at Derby.

I have been - it isn't great. Close to the station mind. Not sure if that is the case for the new Chesterfield ground. Saltergate was 15-20 minute walk

Chesterfield looks about half an hour's stroll from the station. I saw us play a reserve game at Mansfield in about 1995. Daley Thompson (yes, that one) got sent off.

Yes it's close to the station but it's a midweek game and the last train to Nottingham leaves (or did in 2011 anyway) before the game finishes!
Went there with Tamuff when Mansfield were non-league, thought the ground ws okay, three new stands and a condemned one with a hole in the roof where I'm sure the defenders were aiming for with every clearance.

I was at Field Mill the day we relegated Cov. Stags were playing Scunny. It was a 1-0 bore fest. And it was cold in the ground on a roasting hot day in May.

Last train to Notts is 21:48. However not sure if there is a train to Brum from Notts after that.

According to my inside knowledge, the glamour friendly will be Monaco.

My inside knowledge is gained from looking up "Champions League 2014-15" on Wikipedia and randomly pointing at a section of the laptop screen with my eyes closed.

Unfortunately I don't think we get that much holiday, the season starts on the 16th. Personally I'd rather it started in September and we spent August playing friendlies at grounds I haven't been to before.
