Must-win six pointer. Again.

I would go: Guzan, Lowton, Vlaar, Clark, Bertrand; Albrighton, Westwood, Delph, Agbonlahor; Weimann, Holt. Subs: Steer, Bacuna, Bennett, KEA, Benteke, Sylla, Helenius.

Lambert won't.

Best we can hope for is hold them to 0-0 until the 4th minute of added time when their keeper clears the ball, it hits Holt's massive arse and rolls across the line.

Norwich is an absolutely crucial game, this is so similar to the situation last season when we had to beat Reading (I know this is at home) to reduce some pressure we simply have to win and we will, 2-1 Villa.

Looking like a must-win for us now. And I think we will win it, limping three more points closer to undignified survival.

My 10 points prediction from however many games it was in the recent predictions thread is looking increasingly wildly optimistic. We have to win this one though.

Doubt I'll stay up to watch it.

Give the home crowd something to cheer Villa- a glimmer of hope and a smidgeon of excitement.

My normally sunny disposition has taken a real battering recently, I almost always back us to win but I think the most typically 'Villa' result for this game will be a 1-1 draw and a reasonably good performance.

A result disappointing enough so that people are still worried and pissed off, but we'll play juuuust well enough to stop the floodgates opening and people losing their shit entirely.

I think we'll finally turn up and get this right. As Spurs found out, Norwich will be 100% committed but Lambert will for various reasons not want to lose this one and will have the players focused. Anything less than a home win will set the alarm bells ringing. Expect a tough first half but once we take the lead confidence will grow and we'll beat them by a healthy margin.

A 4-1 Villa win will paper over the cracks for a week or two.

Quote from: the mirror

By James Nursey | 27/02/14

The locals are restless again at Villa Park .

A four-game winless run has seen Villa slip to 13th – just four points off the relegation drop zone.

And understandably fans are worried Villa's top-flight status maybe endangered.

The run has also rather undermined claims from Villa Park – and from myself – that the club are making slow, steady progress to improve on last season's 15th place.

Villa's home form remains a huge concern after the West Ham loss.

But the good news for worried Villains is Norwich are next up .

Because if there is one fixture boss Paul Lambert is sure to have his side particularly keyed up for, it is the Canaries.

Now I realise fans will say boss Lambert should have his side properly motivated for every game and I am sure he does.

But the Scot remains furious and bitter about his controversial exit from Carrow Road in June 2012.

It was the culmination of a stormy relationship with Norwich chief executive David McNally.

And in four subsequent matches against the Canaries, Lambert's Villa have never lost.

The corresponding fixture last season was a 1-1 draw at Villa Park.

They also won twice at Carrow Road last season, including in the League Cup.

And they won at Norwich earlier this season when Robert Snodgrass missed a penalty.

From what I have heard, when Lambert is up against a former side, he is so on edge that it translates to the players.

Paul McVeigh, for example, was part of Lambert's Norwich squad who got promoted from League One in 2009/2010.

He is now a radio show host and I recall him discussing Lambert's return to his old club Colchester that season after switching clubs.

McVeigh said Lambert was noticeably extra fired up and on edge against Colchester before City won 5-0.

So Villa's players will know Sunday's game is important for numerous reasons – not least climbing the table.

But the psyche of a player is such that they tend to try a few per cent harder if they know it is a specific game the manager is desperate to win.

After all, a good result will delight the boss and may probably earn them an additional day off or two!

The Canaries head to Villa off the back of a superb victory over Tottenham and their recent performances have been decent – even if results suggest otherwise.

Norwich were very solid at the back against Tottenham and created several chances going forward.

Chris Hughton maybe tempted to drop mis-firing forward Ricky Van Wolfswinkel for Gary Hooper, who can hold the ball up better away from home.

While Wes Hoolahan, who Villa tried to sign in January, is set to be on the bench.

It will be a tight game in my view with a draw the most likely outcome.

But what price a Grant Holt winner?!

Holt is a Carrow Road legend after firing the Canaries from League One to the Premier League with dozens of goals.

He dropped down into the Championship with Wigan last summer but is now back working with Paul Lambert after going to Villa on loan.

He is yet to score for Villa but was the man for the big occasion while at Norwich.

He will relish Sunday's game as a chance to say goodbye to City fans who adored him.

But Holt, 32, who is likely to come off the bench, will also love to prove to them he is not finished yet and what better way than with a late equaliser or winner.

Norwich are one of the few who don't play a 5 man midfield. 4-4-2 for me, Gabby and Albrighton wide, Holt and Benteke up top, sling it under the nose of Ruddy, get Holt to give him a little bosh early doors and play good old up and at em football.

Think a change in formation at home is a must and we have got to take the game to them and look like we are trying to win even if that means taking risks. Albrighton should start and get those crosses going from the off. I see this being either a Bolton type disaster or a Sunderland type stroll.

Yes I was thinking the same earlier, I think Benteke should be dropped based on his attitude at Sid James Park

I can't argue about his performance at St James Park but the problem with dropping Benteke is that he doesn't tend to be a particularly effective impact sub so you probably lose him completely for that game. We are well overdue giving someone a hiding and I hope it is Sunday but I will take any win. A draw and we will be booed off, a defeat and there is a chance it could be Lambert's Bolton game.

Got a suspicious view he'll play Holt in this
Yes I was thinking the same earlier, I think Benteke should be dropped based on his attitude at Sid James Park

I'd say we are well overdue stringing 3 passes together and throwing the ball in to another Villa player before giving someone a hiding.

Norwich are one of the few who don't play a 5 man midfield. 4-4-2 for me, Gabby and Albrighton wide, Holt and Benteke up top, sling it under the nose of Ruddy, get Holt to give him a little bosh early doors and play good old up and at em football.

Against Spurs they dropped Hooper and player Leroy Fer just off the striker so it was a 4-5-1 for that game.

I have a feeling we'll play utterly abysmally and lose three-nil but, like after the home trouncing by Wigan last year, we'll get better after this match.

Our fixture list is horrible after this game though so can't see it.

i was thinking the same . If you see some good performances but feel it just needs to drop into place and been unlucky sometimes I understand a team could but Villa at the moment giving some one a  hiding ?

I actually dont think Norwich have been that bad lately , in fact playing much better than Cardiff . Fulham and baggies but Lambert does seem to get results against his old club , how I wish they would have him back .

Their midfield seems so much more sold than ours, can see them winning 2-1.

This is a genuine question - are the supporters of the other teams in the bottom half saying the same sort of things about their clubs on their forums?

Are they all convinced they are the worst team ever too and that they are all going to lose every game?

Or is it just on here people are slitting their wrists?

I think most teams  down there would expect to be there and survival is success - villa are too big a club to be enduring relegation battles year after year and the fans are rightly pissed off with things.

All you can do at the moment is just hope a performance will come. One galvanising performance is all it takes, surely? West Ham got a point at Chelsea when everyone expected a drubbing - they've gone on a good run since. Norwich drew at home with City and went on to beat Spurs. And though I can't see Villa doing something like that at the moment, I couldn't see Norwich doing it three weeks ago.

Win this, hope results elsewhere go our way (as is standard these days), everyone gets a bit of a lift, and then maybe we can just safely see out another season to forget.

The bad news is that I think Norwich are going to beat us, we'll play terribly and the crowd will really get on Lambert's case. Having lost the crowd's backing, we won't play well again for the rest of the season and will ultimately be relegated along with Fulham and Cardiff.

However, the good news is that my football predictions are almost always completely wrong. So expect us to thrash Norwich and finish 8th while West Ham, Stoke and Manchester United go down. Maybe.

This game is taking on a significance beyond the 3 points on offer. A win should settle things down a little and allow us to see a way though to the end of the season with some degree of confidence; lose or even draw and I think a lot of frustration will come to the boil.

I know we traditionally like to moan about our defence but after Sundays game PL needs to badly sort out the front men. Excluding the madness of the West Brom game we've only scored 6 goals since the turn of the year (we scored 5 in December but that included 3 at Southampton).

I guess to oppose my argument is that we can score goals when we setup right - Southampton & Liverpool prove that but unless he sorts this out soon that will be what takes us down.  Score first and we might have got something out of Fulham, Palace, West Ham, Cardiff, Newcastle instead we scraped 1 point from a realistic return of say 7-10.

So before we start pointing the finger at Lowton / Vlaar / Baker / This weeks LB (and clark) lets look at where the real problem lies - teams that dont score never win......

(and yes in my playing days I was centre half .....  :D )

Aboslutely. I'd like to see us go a little gung ho to be honest. And I don't mean in a Lambert 4-2-4 punt and hope kind of way. But it would be nice to really try and set the tempo and really push the opposition, particularly in our home games against dross in the bottom 10. We're so negative too often.
We need to attack, try and make use of our talented attackers. Spread the play, use a bit of width too. Get Albrighton in there to pelt some crosses in. Lets try harder to win matches, and we might just start winning against teams we should be beating.

It's going to be a much tougher game than you imagine, Supertom. Norwich have seen what hard work can bring them and the win against Spurs will given them a much needed boost of confidence. They will try and push us and give us little time on the ball so it's up to us to respond by matching them. An early goal will force them to come at us and hopefully leave space to counter attack but with them likely to play 5 through the midfield, we need to be a lot more clever with the ball.

I'm still confident we can beat them and go on to score a few but it will be a battle to begin with. As Chris pointed out, it's a massive game, especially for us, possibly the biggest of the season to date. Norwich will be happy with a point. We need all 3 not only for our own survival but to go into the rest of the month with a bit of much needed confidence. The last two games have really demonstrated how low the confidence is and we urgently need to address it.

Anything but a win isn't worth considering. Fail to and things could turn very ugly.

This just feels like "the" game of the season for us right now. A win puts us on 31 and well on the way to safety. A draw does little and a defeat not only pushes a rival up ahead of us but keeps us down in the duldrums. It feels almost like the Stoke game of last season before Lowton pulled that blinder out the bag. For me that volley was possibly the key moment in keeping us up. We'd seemingly thrown the game away against a frankly fucking wretched Stoke side. They were appalling, probably the worst side we'd played that season in terms of performance. We didn't look like winning after they'd equalised. We looked as if we'd given up but Matty turned it around and in the end the scoreline looked impressive after ending with a flourish.
For me this Norwich game is similar. Such an important time. Coming into March and we're right in the mire again.

We've got to dictate the game and we've got to win. Lose it and we're by no means dead and buried, of course not, but it may be the first nailed hammered into the coffin. Win and a lot of pressure gets lifted. I think 3 more wins and a couple of draws keeps us up comfortably.

With Stoke looking like they are going to win Today we will be down to 14th, and a loss tomorrow would have us down to 15th. Crystal Palace and Sunderland both have a game in hand on us too. We really need to go for broke tomorrow and get a win to push us back up the table a little and maybe instill a wee bit of confidence. As it that 'comfortable mid table 10th' that some people seemed to think meant too many teams were between us and the relegation zone, isn't looking so comfortable and week by week we are dropping down the table.

If we lose then Lambert should be given his marching orders.

Just hope to see some nice football and a win!

I hadn't realised just how close it has become at the bottom.

We've absolutely got to start to win some games very soon, and this looks the obvious point at which to start. 31 points and we'd be 11th. Lose and we could quite easily be 16th, three points ahead of Albion who would have a game in hand, and only four points ahead of Sunderland in the first relegation place, who would have two games in hand.

Fuck. We just need to start winning some games. A draw tomorrow is not good enough, and I agree with Chris, anything other than three points and we'll see some real anger

Even if we win it's not likely we're going to go on some great run given the fixtures we have forthcoming.

To me beating west Brom was crucial as that got us to 27 points by the end of January and yet we've miserably failed to kick on from that so I don't see a win tomorrow, as crucial as it would be, being any different.

The thing that worries me too , we had always had that gap of 8 points etc from the bottom 3  while playing these so called poor teams around us  eg Cardiff , west ham and palace , so we should have been relaxed with no pressure and had the confidence to play  beat these teams  ,
now the gap is getting shorter , it just mean there is going to be big pressure .

how are we going to handle it under immense pressure to pick up points , we were rubbish when we had no pressure and the comfortable gap .

This game is massive .   We have dropped to many points against teams around us  and it should not go on .

so we needs 3 points today .

I watched Lambert's pre match presser earlier. "This is a game we will go out and try to win." Does that mean that all the other's are games we go out to lose or draw ?
Surely that statement should not even be made. We should be going out to win every bloody game ?

I've never known a season like it Clampy and it has really hacked me off. I accept we were very fortunate to win games like Man. City and Southampton but normally it's logical to think the team would at least gain confidence from beating good teams and go on a run. Instead our form has been awful after both of those results, playing against inferior teams.

Infact our form has been abysmal since the Southampton game on the 4th Dec. You're talking about a period of a period of 13 league games since then. We have won 2 of them and failed to score in 6 of those games.

It was confirmed he went off last week ill so he must be on the brink of death if he's still struggling a week on.

Bennett was hopeless in both Norwich fixtures last season and no doubt Snodgrass will target him again so I'd rather see Clark at LB for this.
