Live on SS1.
Two struggling teams. A dull game. I'm going with 1-1.
-
Actually, thinking about it, I have only set up the pre match thread once this season, and that was the win at Sunderland.
I therefore predict I am going to cause us to win in the north east again.
1-0 to us.
-
1-2 to us. Jusy have a feeling.
Gabby and Big Ben to score.
-
the only predictable thing about this game is that the Villa will be unpredictable.....
if we keep a clean sheet, we will win....therefore 2-2....
Pardew then gets sacked....not by e-mail but by carrier pigeon.
-
I'd take a point. A point would leave us only needing about three more wins and surely we can manage that?

He won't get sacked - Vince McMahon will run into the technical area and take him out with a steel chair.

Great stuff. Long may it continue. I'm not prepared to jinx things by adding a poll so could you do the honours?
-
I think we've got a really good chance here. It's an away game against a side who've just lost the one player who really made them play, namely Cabaye, on a nice big pitch with space to counterattack into. This is a Lambertian game, so I'm hoping for a 2-1 win.
-
Where's the poll?
-
Really looking forward to going up on Sunday. The players aren't playing for Pardew at the moment and we're due a win against Newcastle and at St. James'! 1-3 Vlaar, Albrighton and Benteke
-
Where's the poll?
You just can't get the staff nowadays...
-
If the rumours are true that Pardew has lost the dressing room then we must have a great chance. Therefore football logic says 3-0 home win.
-
Score draw. Both sides seem to be struggling for wins lately. Poor in attack, not great in defence. 1-1 or 2-2. Hopefully Benteke turns up.
-
Nailed on Villa win. 1-0.
-
Them 1 Us 2
-
Look at this - straight from the website:
Villa have increased their allocation for the trip to Newcastle.
Originally set at 1,600 for Sunday's trip to St James Park, we have now secured a total of 2,200.
Villa currently have just over 300 left for the 1.30pm kick-off.
Prices for the Barclays Premier League game are £27 [adults], £22 [O65s], £22 [students] and £5 [U18s].
Tickets are on general sale.
-
Can Newcastle lose another home game on the spin? I'm going and have never seen us win there before. The only result is a draw.

Well we've plenty of experience when it comes to shite home form so I'll say yes. 3-1 Villa.
-
Hard to call- newcastle will be stung by criticism but will they react in a positive fashion - villa are a better team away from home - possible 2-2 draw.
-
If one were to believe the papers then Pardews job is on the line in this game. With that in mind I'm not sure we can hammer the final nail in the coffin of his Newcastle career. I think he'll do enough to keep his job for another week. Still can't see them winning it though.

That would make it the third Newcastle manager we'd seen off in recent years.
-
Cisse has not scored a goal since about 1972. Villa will save his career because that is what they do in such circumstances.
-
To quote one of their many ex-managers, I will love if we beat them, love it. Our best, and funniest, win there was the 3-0 when Dyer and Bowyer got sent off for fighting each other and Newcastle finished with 8 men.
There probably couldn't be a better time to play them than now, but of course we've said that before (Fulham, Palace, West Ham, Cardiff)
-
I am surprised by how little I care about this game. What a terrible realisation.

Everywhere around us Premiership managers are getting the chop based on results and performance. We deliberate over a new contract for ours.
-
Rarely get to away games but I'm going to this one with my lads.
The last one we went to was the Hull match. It cant be as bad as that one can it?

All the clubs that have clipped (sorry - just started watching Sopranos!) their manager have been below us, haven't they? Spurs being the obvious exception.
-
Swansea are above us (just).
-
Not when the clipped him they weren't.

*puts on moms voice* "Well if they all jumped off a cliff, would you?
-
Barry saved Souness from the chop by skying a peanlty in the last minute up there too.

Adkins at Southampton?
-
Adkins went last season - I was referring to this season as that's what I thought the original post I responded to was getting at.
-
Great poll options. Far better than my usual boring ones.
-
Adkins went last season - I was referring to this season.
Still above us though when 'clipped'.
I don't want it to sound like I want PL clipped too, just that it's odd that other clubs around us are reported with their manager under pressure and we are looking at a contract extension with our survival in the league anything but secure unlike Newcastle's.
-
1-1 draw.

It's been debated to death on here, but as things stand I don't think we're a realistic candidate to go down this season. We were last season, so if anything I'm surprised he survived 12/13 more than I am at the present time.
I guess it's about the owner really as Norwich are below us and also in danger, yet I can't recall much speculation about Hughton's job being under threat either.
-
Maybe for another thread and completely off topic, but I find myself doing the Paulie Walnuts "Ooooooh!" with accompanying hand wave in mock outrage at soamething quite a lot.
God I love the Sopranos.
-
We play better away from home and Newcastle will attack us, so its all set up for our master strategy (which is the only one we have got) of counter-attacking - win for the Villa 1-3.
-
A creditable draw. 1-1.

You should hear myself and my brother talking. Most of our conversations are punctuated with Hoooooo!
-
1-3 win. Newcastle look short of confidence at the moment.
-
Good luck and safe trip to all villains heading up there
-
I love the way the pre match thread is full of optimism and then 20 minutes into the match thread it's "ffs villa this is fuckin awful". I just hope we can turn up for a whole game for once or even 70 minutes or so. We won't get away with a first half playing like we did against Cardiff that's for sure. I'd take a 1-1 now.
-
If ever a team/player needs a pick me up, what better team to play than Aston Villa???
-
I'd throw KEA into the midfield for this one but I can't decide if i'd play Weimann or Albrighton.
-
Good feeling on this one, think we'll win 2-1. (although we usually lose the good feeling on this one games!!)
Shame we couldn't have played Newcastle last weekend seeing as both teams have been out of the cup since round 3...that team they put out last team v Spurs is very beattable although Remy will be back from his ban and Ben Arfa is a bit of a jink player for us.
-
KEA for me as well, and Albrighton.
-
Nope
1-3
-
2-2 draw for me. But what do I know?
-
Newcastle in a terrible run needing points, Villa to oblige them. 3-1 Newcastle.
-

Well if you combine that with the rumours that he's lost the dressing room, it should mean that their players will absolutely not give a f&%k.
However, being as it's all newspaper rumour and conjecture it probably means the square root of diddly squat.
I can't help thinking that the last time we played them up there on a Sunday lunchtime was............
Anyway for what it's worth two inept teams = 0-0.
-
I was wondering how on earth, given the standard of mediocrity that English clubs who have had past success but aren't on the CL gravy train, like us and (to a lesser extent) them, Pardew's job can be under threat given their solid league position, then I looked at their recent results.
Crikey. Awful.
-
Losing three-nil at home to your local rivals is probably worth about three defeats against anyone else in terms of supporters wanting a manager sacked.
-
Can't see them loosing another home game,so I hope we can get a draw, 1-1

3-0 to the toon

It also completed a Sunderland double for the season so he will have lost a lot of fans solely on that basis.

I hadn't thought things were going that badly for them. I don't really follow their results or pay any attention to them, but I did read that Roy kinnear had fucked of recently, so just assumed pardew had stood his ground and won that battle (and rightly so, I don't mind him as it goes).
Still think we're the white knight in shining armour that comes galloping in to the rescue when other clubs desperately need points. However, our reasonable away form will see us return safely with a few dents to the shield and a wonky helmet, but tightly clutching a point. 3 would be a bonus. None would fucking suck.
-
Toon 1 Villa 4
Mirhandinho for them. Rideout x 2, Evans and Kerr for us.
-
Newcastle are on a bad run, they need a home win. I'm sure we'll oblige.
-
2-1 Villa, lock up your horses
-
1-2. Guzan to score from a corner, as we push to clinch it with Geordies down to 9 men. Our other goal will be a shot from Bennett, deflected by the referee into the net.
-

Roy Kinnear passed away 26 years ago, from injuries sustained falling from a galloping horse, whilst filming a Musketeers movie.

Derek McGovern article in the Mirror today:
''Rumours suggest Newcastle could be taken over by a wrestling billionaire - meaning they could know before kick off that they will lose.
No change there , then.
Vince McMahon, owner of the WWE, is reportedly ready to buy out Mike Ashley in a bid to get a stranglehold on an untapped British market,
even though strangleholds are frowned upon. McMahon will become the second wrestling figure to make his mark in Premier League football
- the first being Martin Skrtel at corners.
It's not a pleasant thought, really who wants to see Cheick Tiote foull an opponent with a steel stepladder?
McMahon said the first thing he'd do is turn the Amoebi brothers into tag team champions. The second would be to buy back Joey Barton.
Newcastle fans would probably not mind McMahon taking over. Under Ashley, looking for optimism on Tyneside is like looking for a needle in a
giant haystacks. The Toon are 4-1 with Paddy Power to start selling foam fingers- they're worth more than the players and it's 20-1 for a WWE PPV event to be staged at St James Park!!!!
-
Such a weird bunch, you get the feeling they'd be much happier being 16th with Keegan as manager.
-
I'm not about this weekend so won't see this, hopefully that brings us good luck. We really need a win.
-
I can imagine this one being about as attractive to watch as Susan Boyle doing a 90 minute striptease while being hosed down by Ann Widdicombe. With that in mind I'm almost glad I'll be otherwise engaged cleaning out a house.
However if I get wind that Vince McMahon has turned up, and instead of the ref blowing the whistle to start the match, someone grabs a mic and shouts "Let's get ready to rumble!!!" I may have to take a break from gutting a garage and slap the game on.

He's packed some puns in there has Derek, and no mistake.
He' right about wrestling n the penalty area, though.

it was deliberate. Joe's short time at St. James's was almost as funny as Roy's entire career. Especially his pre- entry media interview.

Probably not aftert he last experience. He'd probably try to re-sign Peter Beardsley
-
1-1
-
I'm also going for a 1-1 draw.
-
They'll be punching the horses on the streets of Newcastle come Sunday night when we've turned them over.
-
Looking at Swansea and their superb performance against Napoli last night I wonder, and bin wonderin all day!
-
I am going for a 1-1 draw.
-
Shortest odds at the bookies is 1-1 at 11/2
-

Ha ha when was that? The time they had 3 players sent off?

With about 19,000 in the ground.

A win would be superb, I think we could then kind of enjoy the rest of the season. Therefore you just know what's going to happen .

No, last season after Di Canio's Mackems won 3-0
-
No two ways. Well there are I suppose but no two ways we let this one slip! Cum on de Villa..I need out of this increasing depression!
-
I think we will get tonked 3-1. :(
-
This fixture normally throws up a 30 yarder in the first 10 minutes from some relic that scores once every 100 years, think Barry Venison has retired so I'll go for Coloccini. Remember there is no offside at St James', a chest trap counts as hand ball and 50/50s usually result in a red card to the opposition. Having said that if they don't get their noses in front it usually works in our favour and with the dismal form they are in we should be capable of taking at least a point from this.
-
Score early and scramble a hard earned draw with Lambert telling the world that we were fantastic. I hazard a guess that we might score with our only shot on target.
-
0-4 Us all day long ;)
-
If he picks the right team, i can only see a win 3-2
-
Barcodes 1-2 AVFC
Remy 67. Benteke 10 Albrighton 88
-
1-2 Clark OG, Delph and Holt.
High pitched booing at the end.
-
Depends on which Villa turn up. If its the Liverpool Villa 0-3 if its the negative attitude Villa waiting for something to happen 1-1. Hope this Portugal break has regenerated everyone ......
-
Dunno. When I think we'll get hammered, we don't. When I think we'll win, we don't.
So I think we'll win. But whether that's because I actually believe we'll get hammered or actually believe we'll win, I don't know. I'm very confused.
-
My Mrs has got her sister up here for the weekend.
Tomorrow, they're going out for lunch with their (dreadful) mother. Normally, that is the sort of engagement I'd do anything to get out of. Given that our game is on at lunchtime, that's my excuse this time around, highly convenient, but if I am being honest, I was tempted, for a short while, to take the lunch with the mother in law option.
They're going somewhere pleasant, the food would be nice. It's a Sunday, I could take the paper and not appear hugely ignorant by sitting there, reading it.
I'm not going to lie, I was very tempted to take that option.
How did things get this bad, Villa?

Mother In Law > The Villa.
Possibly the most depressing summation of our situation at the moment. ;)
-
Won't be around for any coverage of this so please surprise me Villa and win, we badly need it.
-
I think we'll lose 3-1. All the results yesterday were pretty good for us and they're on a bad run so we are usually the team to oblige in situations like that.
-
Don't think I'll bother watching this as we all know how the story goes .
-
Nigel Kennedy is playing at the end of the Andrew Marr Show, about 9.55 on BBC1. Apart from the Villa shirt, he still looks a bit of a state.
-
I hope the result isnt the same as when we played them up there in March 1927. We lost a keenly fought encounter 7-5!
Mind you Pongo got a couple.
-
I have a rare Sunday off today and used to get excited about match days but today I will watch the game but have lost that excitement i used to feel about a villa game - that saddens me.
-
I feel the same way. I almost dread match days now and I can't quite explain it. There have been arguably worse Villa sides than this but I don't remember having less confidence in one.
-
I feel the same way. I almost dread match days now and I can't quite explain it. There have been arguably worse Villa sides than this but I don't remember having less confidence in one.
Ditto. We are a team very much playing in the reflection of the people that run us.
Pretty clueless, with zero ambition. Very sad.
-
I always look forward to match days, the Villa are playing, what's not to like? I'm not keen on watching us on the box but i'll grin and bear it today for once.
-
I hope just for once we can put in a decent display to impress the nation who are all sat in the pubs or at home watching it. When was the last time we won a televised match? 6-2 vs Sunderland I reckon.
-
I think the key terms for me are frustration and stupidity. Frustration that I believe that even this team are capable of far more than our points tally suggest and stupidity in the sense that we have one way of playing that works for us: aggressive, and too often pussyfoot around trying to play a way we are not suited to.
Take the first half against Liverpool away as an example. When we play like that, which is basically all out assault, good things happen. The fans respond to it. It's just better. As soon as we try anything else, we look utterly incapable. So why try anything else? We're going to concede, it's almost inevitable, so just keep attacking. It was the same during our good form towards the end of last season. We went for it.
We don't have the tools to keep teams at bay because we can't keep the ball. We don't seem to know how to. The one thing we do well is attack at speed. So do that, and hang the consequences.
-
Trust me, if the internet and wall to wall football coverage had been the same in the McNeill, venglos, BFR final season and even Gregory years, we'd have been just as depressed
-

Norwich.

Me too. The sense of excitement is gone. The usual ritual of waiting to see the team line-ups and then all that possibility at kick-off. I tend to just expect the worst now.
Maybe we can nick one of our smash 'n grabs, that's been the highlight of the season. Our ability to defend a bit better when we sit back than we did last season.
-
The thing with the Liverpool game was not only did we attack, we didn't give their midfield any time on the ball. Two weeks later, we sat back and let Everton have as much of the ball as they wanted and it cost us the game.
-

I remember all those eras and the first two for sure, the last two I can't agree with. I do take your point though, and this team has far more about it than McLeish's for instance, so I don't know what exactly the main reason fohr the despondency is. Maybe it's just the cumulative effect of 4 years of desperate struggling. Maybe I've just had enough of it. If something keeps causing you pain and ruining your day or week or year, it's only natural to start avoiding or resenting it.
I feel a bit ashamed to be honest.
-

Precisely. Stupidity. Not learning from your success or mistakes.

Absolutely. You get the feeling that if we won today, it would have absolutely no bearing on the result of the next game which we could just as easily win or lose 6-0 regardless. There's no sustainability, no sense of overall improvement, just a week in, week out diet of disconnected results which don't ever make me feel very attached to the team or as if I want to really care as much as I should...

This is so true. I now expect to lose every game and then everything else is a bonus. I have no faith in them whatsoever as we can battle one week and then roll over the next and the Club doesn't seem to bat an eyelid anymore - or that's how it feels.
They are on a terrible run though. But you also just now we're the team that they all love to play when in this situation. We are Sheffield Wednesday circa 1998.

The problem is that even if we lose today we will still be 13th and that fact will only help to support the current in denial mentality shared by Lambert, the coaches and players. It is this coasting and acceptance that if we are not in the bottom three 'what's the worry' mindset that is getting to me. The positive way of think would be a win at Newcastle means that we can increase the distance between us and the bottom 3 and decrease the gap with the top 8.

well the last villa Newcastle game I went to was one of the worse displays I have ever seen , my son even said I dont want to come down for a while , its rubbish . so Im hoping Villa owe every one of us and put a fine performance in and give us 3 pts.
I never get the preditions right , I say we are gonna hammer the like of Palace and Fulham and they say the like of Liverpool will spank us .
Which Villa win turn up , I just dont know. The jeckyl and hyde of the Prem , more hyde at times.

Come on Aaah-stone Veelaah! Off t'pub to watch in Red Lion or maybe The Flying Horse in Side. Red Lion will almost certainly be showing the 'other' lot.
Villa win..have put the dosh on with the Iddaa what ever that means..local bookies that only do football games.

I don't feel terribly confident but it's winnable. I think we're capable of panicking them at the back and scoring a couple, and with Vlaar we may be able to defend a lead. 2-1 to us

1-0 Benteke

I feel the same way. I almost dread match days now and I can't quite explain it. There have been arguably worse Villa sides than this but I don't remember having less confidence in one.
It's the opposite of us under MON. We had a decent team, not the best, but no matter who we played, I felt confident of getting a result. How quickly things change...
-
I feel similarly. It's been a long time since I was confident going into a game.
-
They've had a poor run of results as the manager keeps changing the formation and they are desperately missing a creative no 10.
As for us,
We've had a poor run of results as the manager keeps changing the formation and we are desperately missing a creative no 10.

A defeat for Newcastle today and they will implode. All want their owner to sell up, most want Pardew out and reading their forums, a lot don't give a shit about the game.
If Lambert is true to his word and we go at them "from the front foot" as we did against Liverpool, we can get something from the game. If we allow them time to settle down, allowing their returning players to ease their way back in we'll get stuffed.
It all depends on which Aston Villa turn up today.

Guzan, Bacuna, Vlaar, Baker, Bertrand, Westwood, KEA, Delph, Weimann, Benteke, Gabby

And on whether Lambert goes the Liverpool approach, in which we try and win the game and play positively, or does an Everton and doesn't attempt to win the match against a team that had its deficiancies. Everton's last 3 games, they've played all right but without any strikers the opposition hasn't needed to play well to beat them. Another opportunity lost when we played at Goodison I feel.
