Any team news yet? Is Gabby fit?

Guzan, Lowton, Clark, Baker, Bertrand, Bacuna, Westwood, Delph, Weimann, Benteke, Agbonlahor (c)

subs: Steer, El Ahmadi, Sylla, Helenius, Albrighton, Holt, Bennett.

Swap Vlaar for Baker and thats more or less our strongest side imo

ASTON VILLA TEAM NEWS
Team to play West Ham: Guzan, Lowton, Clark, Baker, Bertrand, Bacuna, Westwood, Delph, Weimann, Benteke, Agbonlahor
Subs: Steer, El Ahmadi, Sylla, Helenius, Albrighton, Holt, Bennett

Gabby in up front. Bacuna midfield. Lowton and baker at the back.

Looks either a return to the 4312 or the 433

The 4312 has worked well of late but it could be too narrow to play against a team like west ham.

Or I guess it could be bacuna and gabby wide with Weimann off benteke?

Interesting to see Bennett back over Luna on the bench.

We've got to be beating West Ham. Their side is utterly piss poor.

Got work to do in a bit so sadly won't be able to see this. Hopefully I'll get a nice surprise when I check later.

West Ham have kept the most clean sheets in the league. The early goal is crucial today and if we get it, I'm predicting a 3-1.

Could conceivably be 5 with Bacuna and Bertrand at wing back and Lowton as a third centre half.

Both corners from Westwood haven't been the usual floaters to the back corner of the box. He's whipping them in. Good sign.

West Ham sitting deep too.

Good start. No boofing, keeping the ball, moving off it and looking for the options. Also the full backs are getting forwards, giving us width.

Title: Re: Aston Villa v West Ham United Match Thread
Post by: Matt Collins on February 08, 2014, 03:16:08 PM
We're trying to pass it. But we do look very narrow. West ham are just going to sit in there. It's not working when we try to force balls in behind given their defence and the conditions

I think bacuna is going to need to help provide some width on the right. The forwards need to pull wide too. Could be a frustrating game

Fucking Baker, why do we give away stupid free-kicks all the time.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v West Ham United Match Thread
Post by: Dribbler on February 08, 2014, 03:17:02 PM

This is going to be a long afternoon, West Ham sitting back with 2 tight banks of four and trying to play on the counter, 'forcing us' to take the game to them and break them down.

Watching us play, we don't move the ball fast enough, we need more 1 touch football so that we can move them around more to create space and run through them with maybe a quick 1-2 on the edge of their area. If only we had that creative no 10!

We need a goal. And we need to vary our play more. It's too windy to go direct. I think we need to work it wide more to get into crossing positions.

I keep on saying this, but the constant chopping and changing of formations really doesn't help our pattern of play. To make this formation work We need to work out when the full backs should push on, when bacuna and Delph need to pull wide, and when one of the forwards does. We also need to work out how to put better pressure on the ball to stop Jarvis and cole spinning in behind our defence onto some pretty straight forward passes

Today really is a day where we need a more creative midfielder in there. Westwood's playing neatly, Delph is being energetic, but we need a player to play more intelligent passes forward. We should also have our forwards wider, because we're just allowing Wham to bunch up the way we're playing.

I don't think the midfield is the problem today (ie I don't think it's Delph or Westwood or bacuna problem.

The problem today, for me, is the narrowness, the lack of quality on the ball in attacking areas (ie in the front three) and our defence. Lowton and baker in particular

I agree with this. It would be Bacuna, if anyone, who's been the weaker link in midfield, but even he's just been a bit slow on the ball rather than terrible. We need more creativity and more width. More fucking width. It's not that hard.

It's another game where I can't see for the life of me what type of player Bacuna actually is. He's clearly decent, but where should he play? I don't think he's that good a right-back, and he always seems to get lost in a midfield three, and he's not quick enough to be an attacking midfielder.

I'd say he would be best as an out and out, Beckham-style right-midfielder, which we could use to reasonable effect, probably.

I think the most effective is behind the front 2, or wide in the front 3. But at the moment in a 3 man midfield we need a dominant figure with Westwood and Delph, Bacuna isn't that.

Westwood is playing perfectly fine, I think. His job is sit a bit deeper, play one or two-touch passes, spread it a bit, try and make interceptions when we lose it, and for me he's done that just fine. Delph's job is to be more aggressive, up-and-down, driving into space and so forth. Neither of them is really a final-third midfielder, but they're either being forced to try final balls from deep, shoot, or step into the attacking midfield position where they're not really comfortable. And Bacuna is really just a substitute Delph, not a final third player.

We're passing better than usual, but we look utterly clueless as to how we can break them down.

We have absolutely zero width, either.

I'm also concerned at how often the full backs are giving them loads of space, Lowton in particular. If I were a betting man (or, more precisely, if I had more money to bet with), I'd have a few quid on Jarvis to score. He seems to be getting into a lot of space.

In a game like this, we either need to find a way to be more creative, which I think means Albrighton as we haven't got anyone else. The front three just don't have the technical skills to help us break a team down.

Or it means going long ball. The conditions prevented that in the first half, but could enable it in the second. I'd rather we didn't play like that, but I can see it going that way.

Either way, surely we can't go another summer transfer window without buying one or two players with the skills to break a team down in the final third. Unless Grealish or Carruthers come good, we just don't have that kind of player at all.

Awful half of football the front 3 been off the pace really and at the back its a shambles as we expected.

Title: Re: Aston Villa v West Ham United Match Thread

The problem is that we need to take one of the front 3 off to add stability in front of the back 4. But who? And who do you bring on? Would Albrighton be any better than what we have on their? 4-4-2 would win this for us.

I don't agree. We're struggling to gain any foothold as it is, and look static anyway when we do have the ball. 4-4-2 would leave us completely overrun.

We're pretty poor generally, but it's in the last third that we're making no impact. We have so very little movement off the ball as usual and that coupled to the fact that we have no one willing to beat a man means that we revert to sideways or backward passing as soon as a defender comes within 10 yards, inevitably resulting in losing possession.

Difficult to see it improving second half unless there are drastic changes.

Not 442 - I don't think we could get away with that.

But we could push Bacuna tight on the right, with Gabby left, Weimann playing behind the striker. Or we could be more adventurous and push Bacuna back with Albrighton wider.

Personally, I'd do the latter. Not least because I can't believe we can get away with another 45 minutes where Lowton lets Jarvis in time and time again.

Lowton and Baker are horrific defenders but the main problem is the way Lambert has set up the side.

Does anyone know where Bacuna and Weimann are supposed to be playing? Just running around like headless chickens the pair of them. Lambert really is clueless, should have been able to see that we were getting exposed down our right so why not move to 442. Gabby and Benteke only getting in each others way up front. Clearly not working, West Ham gaining in superiority and yet he changes nothing.

This is a West Ham side that somehow have the likes of McCartney, Taylor and Cole still stealing a living in the top division and they are miles better than us. Thankfully Downing is as gutless as ever otherwise we would be behind.

edit - typed this at half time back now and its 2-0 down. fucking hell

Does anyone still believe there's no danger of us getting relegated? We are truly dire. Even Crystal Palace are now just one point behind us.

I always said I wouldn't stop worrying til we got to 40 points. I felt a draw today would even have given us something of a cushion. Lose to the likes of Palace, West Ham, Stoke and Fulham and you will be bobbling about the drop zone.

The Lambert myth. That every problem is because of our limiting budget and that us plebs can't see that he is actually a strategic genius. Effing bullshit, trying to fool us all. His team selections are lacking, his tactics often woeful. His transfer dealings questionable. Finances or not there are several question marks hanging over his tenure. Contract time? Think not.

The reason they haven't turned on him is just passages like that - it may have been appallingly innocuous, but we were passing it around and at least trying to play good football. The problem is that everything about Lambert, from the bog-standard formation to the obsession with Big Lump Strikers, indicates that he doesn't really know how to get us to play the style properly - a nuance Lerner and Faulkner will never understand.

Lerner has given up on the club but Lambert's abilities as a manager have been well and truly found out at Villa. Cant understand how little criticism he has been getting outside the club. Think as per previous Villa manager's his career will nosedive quickly once he is put out of his misery.

Did anyone mention that Paul Lambert is utterly clueless?

Because he is.

I'm depressed.

Even more than normal.

This is West Ham ffs.  With Carlton Cole up front.

Me? No. I'd still be pissed we weren't winning. Dreadful.

Holt's done nothing

What?  You mean the mercurial game changing substitute Grant Holt hasn't won it for us?

Yep. So Lambert should have known that we desperately needed an experienced centre-back in January and did nothing.

Look at that empty, depressed villa park. What a shite four years. Under-achieving is an understatement.

should have signed another. Vlaar was always likely to be injured for long spells

If there were stats kept for percentage of crosses that don't make it past the first defender, we would be in the 90's.

really so clubs player never get injuries

Okore was bad bad luck

we know Vlaar is injury prone , we should have loaned a CB in Jan and not Holt , mistake.

The thing I really can't understand is why we didn't get some cover in for Vlaar, a player who has had injury problems.

He goes off and we concede late at Everton, and is missing today and we are a shambles without him.

Why bother when he will get a new contract anyway. Nobody can justify retaining this clown.
