No Gabby - Holt starting. The team tweet got Bertrand in twice
Guzan, Bertrand, Vlaar, Clark, Baker, Bertrand, Westwood, Delph, Weimann, The Beast and Holt

Subs Steer KEA, Sylla, Helenius, Albrighton, Tonev, Lowton

Hmm. 532 with holt up front. Not going to be pretty today is it? Not convinced its a good idea to play wing backs and let their attacking full backs get two on one v our wing backs. Maybe we're backing ourselves to deal with crosses into the box

Why oh why 5 across the back!?!?! We looked awful at the end of the Albion game like that and it's today against these lot we're asking for them camp in our half. There'll be no pressing today then, everyone back...

Everton despite people saying they are weakened look pretty strong to me.

3-5-2 for us. Interesting to see Holt and Teke together, could cause a lot of issues.

It's not attacking at all - it's Bacuna/Bertrand at RB and LB with three centre halfs, usual midfield three and just knock-down city up front with Holt/Benteke!

Exactly - so without the threat of Lukaku, why on earth are we playing three at the back and not the 4-3-3 what played so well at Liverpool?!

It looks like a 5212 to me. Not what I would've gone for but oh well!

Let's see how we do with a proper man up front.
Title: Re: Everton v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: supertom on February 01, 2014, 02:22:47 PM
I quite like Weimann in that position. It's the number 10 position, although he plays more of a high energy role, rather than playmaking,  and defensively will try to get at Barry and McCarthy who will sit deep (he did a good job on Gerrard against Liverpool). But he can hit either flank when we attack and also get beyond the front two.

I'm not sure we need to go 3 at the back. In principal, if Bertrand and Bacuna keep on the front foot, it should be alright, but that requires keeping the ball more effectively. In that respect I think Holt could do well. If you play it to his feet, the ball will stick to him.

Benteke will probably pull to the left quite a lot I'd imagine and maybe drop off too to link up play.

Or 4-3-3, with Clark in midfield?

No chance

I also like wrimann's energy in that position - a bit similar to tommy Johnson

I can't see us keeping the ball much today. I think it will be a case of defend deep and play direct into the front two. Weimann is going to have to help put pressure on their midfield or Delph and Westwood could get completely outpassed by everton

Looks like 3-5-2 to me. Bacuna and Bertrand given license to get forward and track back. Weimann maybe just floating behind front two.
Whether it works today or not, I  like the fact that Lambert picks a formation to play the opposition rather than just "well it worked in the last game".
Most formations these days are fluid anyway.....

We could possibly bring on Albrighton or Tonev for Baker at some juncture and be a bit more adventurous. Holt will last about 60 minutes, so I'd guess at some point KEA or Sylla will come in.

Will be interesting how Holt and Benteke play up front, to be fair to him Grant holt has done all right when he has come on by holding the ball up waiting for the midfielders to join the attack, also with Everton missing Distin our front two could boss their defence.

Well this is an Everton team that has goals throughout the side, i think they've scored 43 in all competitions, Lukaku has 9, and the rest of the team has scored 34 goals between them, so we still need to be wary of them.

It's the formation. It's designed to let them have the ball. And the big risk is the space baines is getting
I really hate this 352. It only works if it enables you to monopolise possession (which we aren't) or you're going to be very defensive (which we are)

You can see us breaking on them though. But it's all gonna be down to andi and benteke, and possibly Delph.

Everton are playing quite a deep back line, so not really giving us much opportunity to counter attack at pace. It's all Everton at the moment though, despite the fact that we've managed to contain them pretty well so far still a little worried we seem to have very little out ball.

Hello all

It's a pretty decent defensive job so far, still not sure this is the correct approach but they don't seem to be able to get in behind us at the moment and we may well sneak one on the counter. Not great to see Villa play like this but needs must I suppose and a 0-0 draw would be a decent result here.

Lambert has nailed it first half. We've swamped the middle of the park and denied them any space, Bacuna is better suited as a RWB than RB. I think Holt will come off after 60 minutes for pace. We're in control here, 3 points for the taking.

Really good performance against a side that were battered in midweek, they were always going to come at us early on but they've done nothing with the ball because we've let them keep it until they get into our 3rd then we've just crowded them out with 2-3 players always going together.  This is how I've been wanting to see us defend, very happy.  Going forward we look like we have a guy making his first start and that's led to a few misunderstandings.  When we got it right however it was superb, great pressing from Delph, Good reaction from Bacuna to seize on it and then superb from Benteke to hold it up and get it back to him.
Title: Re: Everton v Aston Villa Match Thread

Played fairly well so far. Defended pretty well. Bacuna's been good. Well taken goal. Delph's played well too. The 3 CH's have done well too. We're not keeping the ball particularly well, but that's little surprise. Aside from McGeady's effort, Everton have struggled to cause us problems. They're really lacking a focal point.

Tactically it's a hard one. I'm not sure Holt is offering enough and I'd be tempted to add a midfielder in there to offer a bit more presence, but at the same time he's putting himself about reasonably well and might frustrate their defenders a bit more. We could really do with Gabby's pace it must be said. As it is, I think Holt will be dead on his feet by 60 minutes anyway. It might be worth putting Sylla on at that point to do a bit of running.

Sounds like sense. If we can keep it up for another 20 minutes it would be nice to see Albrighton on for Holt

Bacuna has been Lamberts best signing in summer

He either looks class or clueless.

Decided to be class today fortunately...

value for money hes done good

yes sometimes hes meh

but he comes up with quality as well

but every Bacuna there is Tonev
For me, he's 22 and unsurprisingly had a bit of a bad spell around Nov-December. Hes coming back to form again though. He's a useful player and 4 goals thus far is a pretty decent return for his debut season in the Prem. I think he's been a bargain. I can certainly see the potential in him that I can't quite see in Luna for example, and definitely can't see in Tonev.

Jores.

He only played a handful of games bit early to say that

Hopefully we'll get another chance to judge very soon.

Don't get me wrong, I like him.

He has looked completely lost at times but Lambert has played him all over the shop.

Match going well I suppose. Not sure we can keep on inviting Everton onto us without offering a bit more of a threat though.

good goal. that tackle could be a big moment for delph and international recognition. we worked it well from there for a good breakaway goal. calm finish from bacuna.

aside from that I think we have been utter muck. premier league players should be able to put more than four passes together but it seems well and truly beyond us. clark and baker particularly bad at cowardly giving away possession.

amazing to be 1-0 up considering two of our players, holt and weimann may aswell not be playing.

everton playing some nice stuff but have no cutting edge. mirallas is a strange player, can be utterly anonymous and brilliant from game to game. thankfully the former so far from him.

game is here for us, everton look a bit shaky after the liverpool defeat last week. benteke looks very sharp imo

I still fancy Benteke to score today too. Jagielka is looking a bit frustrated. If we stay tight at the back, we look good for a win today. The more they push, the more gaps they'll leave at the back and we've got our counter attacking mojo back.

They're getting on top now. We need to keep the ball much better. With the lack of fwd options it's going to take precision stuff and more movement than we're showing. I can't see what holt is offering really and I think we need more movement in attacking areas

Even if that means putting Weimann up top and bringing albrighton or sylla into midfield

Everton are going to have to press us to try and get an equaliser, the longer we can hold out the more desperate they will get and they'll start to leave space and holes at the back, meaning they'll be more prone to the counter attack from us.

I agree, I'm still not sure whether to look down the league or up it! I err on the side of looking down as it's become such a habit of late

Is there anything we can do to look more dangerous? We're not gonna switch to four at the back. We can't really afford to play two in midfield. I'm not sure there is, other than pass the ball better. We don't really have anyone to come on and do that tho
