I have noticed your penchant for boxing - are you related to Richie woodhall by any chance?

No blue and white stripey sheep in the family then?  I have a couple of them in mine.

Didn't get to see the heavyweights this weekend, has Fury started to look like a boxer yet?  He's got a very impressive record and deserves some respect for it but his technique has always looked abysmal to me, just wondering if 10months without a fight has given him time to focus on it a bit more rather than just relying on his height and power.  He's still calling out Klitschko but he doesn't seem to be in that class for me, maybe the lack of quality in the division in general is part of the problem though.

Looking forward to Froch vs Groves again, I really enjoyed the last fight I think it'll be close again but Froch might take it a little more seriously this time.

We allowed one, as an experiment.

They were two strange fights. Fury was well on top but he was horrendously out of shape and clowned around too much. Chisora was just boring - his opponent is talented but didn't seem to want to be in there while. Chisora couldn't/wouldn't step up to stop him.

Fury's great box office; he's exciting and there's always the chance he'll get caught. Chisora has managed to lose the British title, then European, then world, then to Haye, but still keeps a top ten ranking and tops bills.

I fear for Ricky Burns tonight. KO in 5. BUT, if he comes out and fights as well as he did last time he's got every chance. But, the worry is how much that took out of him. Dislocated jaw and everything.

No, just got the stoppage at the end of the eleventh but he got caught a couple of times. I don't know if he boxes within himself or he's Euro level at best.

The cynic in me says 9/4 for a Eddie Hearn world champion on an Eddie Hearn card in his own back yard is exceedingly good value.

Title: Re: Boxing thread 2014.
Post by: peter w on March 01, 2014, 11:12:59 PM
Jim Watt's annoying me constantly criticising Burns. Burns has gone into this fight thinking he'd have the same drive but has found out in the ring that the spark is missing. With that in mind he's fighting on as well as he can. He probably knows this will be his last world title fight, if not his last fight full stop. Watt must know this so should be commentating appreciably for the effort he's putting in rather than constantly going on about his jaw and that he must be hurt and carping on saying, " I don't why he's fighting like this" "this isn't the Rickie Burns we're used to seeing in this country".

Twat. He's clearly going to lose and he's trying to get through to the end. Let him lose with a bit of dignity.

Just watching Groves Vs Froch the first fight and by Jevus you wouldn't pick Froch to win in a million years after 9 rounds I can't imagine he had won more than 2 rounds. Incredible fight and can't believe the ref stopped it!!! He was still throwing punches back. Can't wait until Saturday for the rematch.

Post by: john e on May 28, 2014, 06:50:25 PM
the fight should not have been stopped at that stage, but Froch was coming back strong at the time,
now if Froch underestimated Groves and didn't put 100% into his training, then he will this time round so he might be in better condition,
however he is the older man and you would have thought Groves could only improve on last time out as he will have more experience and a lot of confidence

There hasn't been this much interest in a really competitive British fight since that fight in September (?) 1990 and the re-match. Can't wait for it. I too thought, as I guess most did, that Groves was very unlucky but I also think Froch underestimated him which is unlikely to happen second time around. But will Froch respond as he had to do it against Bute, or will this be one young pup too many for him?

Grove's has a style which Froch struggles against. His fast hands and movement around the ring were an absolute nightmare for Froch last time.

I don't buy Froch's line that he didn't prepare properly for the 1st fight. Its a cop out, rather than just admitting he was outboxed for 8 rounds before the ref stopped it the first time Groves was in any sort of trouble.

I think if Groves can keep his head, and refuse to become involved into the brawl he got dragged into in the 8th and 9th rounds, then he'll win.

Wouldnt be surprised if Groves wins on points if he has the stamina. Froch most certainly has. A close decision followed by a third match possibly at Villa Park.

I'd like to see Groves win, don't think he has the power for a K.O, so maybe on points, but i reckon it'll be Froch late on.
Title: Re: Boxing thread 2014.
Post by: dave.woodhall on May 31, 2014, 03:19:20 PM
I've watched the ending of the first fight at least a dozen times and while I thought it was premature then, now I'm not so sure. Just before the ref steps in Groves seems to stumble forward and to me that's the crux of the matter because I can't see whether he was tripped or whether he really was that unsteady.

Anyway, I think Groves will win based on my adage that more often than not youth beats experience.

Carl Froch tonight was superb, he started the fight very well i thought controlling it with his jab but fair play to George battling back into the fight
and was certainly getting on terms....but fcuk me what a punch.
Froch has earned the respect of any doubters tonight and i must admit i was one....i hope he gets his chance to fight in Vegas, there isn't a place on earth
better to watch a fight especially at the MGM.
Nearly 37...absolute fair play to him.
I may even go and watch him if he fights in Vegas!!!
Groves will be back.

Just listening to Robert McCracken....he may well be a blue nose twat...but he spoke well then about tonight...even bringing his daughters to the fight....confident or what.He envisages Froch going for at least another 3 years.

In the late 80's i followed McCracken through all his ABA fights through to the final at Wembley Arena....which unfortunately lost..to Hartlepool lad, Hall was it!!!,but then he turned
pro and all them 'Zulu twats' started following him and my enjoyment of watching him diminished rapidly so stopped going.

Same thing happening now watching Frankie Gavin...can't go and watch him anymore....pleasure to watch his skills though...great hand speed and quick feet!

The first fight I've watched with Mrs Gonz, she's not much of a one for organised violence, and she loved it.  Excellent, cagey to begin, opened out, the slight air of desperation when Froch thought he might be undone in the 7th and a belter of a right cross that was beautifully set up by a left feint.  The first real attempt Froch had made to unwind a big right hand.  The seasoned pro putting a young pup squarely in his place.  Thought Groves showed a distinct lack of class in the build and the post match interviews and am thoroughly glad the belts remained in place.

Props to Degale also who showed a different dimension to his boxing this evening.  The first sign that he may not be a plodding journeyman after all.

I look forward to watching the entire card later. I agree with you about McCracken - his career was marred by the wankers who followed him (although I don't think Gavin's are as bad)  but he's a quality trainer.

Groves has all the skills but lacks a really big punch and it looks like he can't take one either! Mind you, that would have finished most boxers.

Groves might well win a world title in one of the acronyms but he won't be half the champion Froch has been.

Not fair to say he can't take a punch, Froch suckered him and then landed one that'd have downed a bear, that was as good a knock out punch as I've seen.  I do agree that Groves hasn't got the power to compete at the very top, he's got very quick hands though so he'll always give people a tough time.

He was outdone by a boxer who is rightly regarded one of the best for a generation, I don't think Froch saw Groves as a threat for the first fight, this time he took him more seriously, started much better and was in control for most of the fight for me.  Groves did land a few clean blows but it never looked like being anything but a Froch win for me.

Groves vs Degale in about a year will be billed as a fight to replace Froch at the top, I think Groves will win it and have a decent career but I don't think he'll ever have the power to rule the division like Froch has.

To be totally honest, I think all involved with Sky overrate Bellew.  He's come unstuck every time he's stepped up to world class level.

I don't think he's ever been world class. He fought the fight of his life when he lost to Cleverley and he's lived off that ever since. This is a poor card and he's just shown yet again that I know nothing about boxing.

Would it be fair to say that Bellew only really sells tickets in Liverpool as a headliner Dave?  There doesn't really seem much interest outside Liverpool, though the fight with Cleverley and the kind of nonsense we saw tonight will attract a good crowd wherever it is held.  Being as it is going to be around October time, I would think the arena in Manchester ("the up and coming boxing capital of Britain" according to Sky) will be a likely venue.

It was so laughable when he tipped the table over in the chisora press conference, and then struggle to get over it. He really doesn't realise what he looks like. Great fight, i know he's a nose but he is a talented kid, i can't find a reason to argue with the decision, he did well to get off the floor
after the body shot. He certainly should not have stormed from the ring in the way that he did.......maybe that's the typical small heath
attitude. I am a fan though!!!!

Can see him going one of two ways after this.  It could inspire him to try and make the most of the obvious talent he has or he could lose his head and go back to his bad old habits.  I know which one I would like to see, but fear that I know which one is more likely.

Total joke, he should complain to the WBO because those judges weren't watching the same fight I just saw

I really think boxing judges should have to remotely judge from a different location with no sound available to them. I know it's not ideal, but they need to take any sort of home crowd decision out of it.

Not exactly a new thing for such a terrible decision to happen in Germany, but that doesn't excuse it.

Yeah.  The presenters and pundits kept referring to what a great atmosphere it was, but it looked a little on the cave dwelling side to me.  Could see problems happening if Warrington were to fight another British fighter who took a following up there.

In the ring though, he has made great strides in such a short space of time.

He looks a quality fighter, but he's just made himself very difficult to put on in any other city. Him on the same bill as Frankie Gavin or Tony Bellew would be fun.

Yeah, would probably have to introduce an 'away' section the first time in boxing!!  I haven't followed him too closely, but found it a little strange that last night was only his third stoppage in almost 20 fights.  Normally boxers who have gone to mix at the higher levels have a much higher stoppage rate and blow most of their early opponents away within a couple of rounds.

Not quite on the same topic but one of the things I don't like about boxing is the very shady, if not a touch threatening, world of boxing promoters.

AJ is gonna a World champ, he is a superb prospect. I see he is fighting Michael Sprott on 22/11 on same bill as Cleverley & Bellew fight.
Anyone know where that is happening. I may try for a ticket so i can see AJ before he reaches megastardon and ticket prices to match.

On another note Lee Selby was excellent last night against unbeaton Aussie 27-0 going into the fight , a good stoppage and probably did
win every round.

They are going to find it hard to make good matches for Joshua going forward.  I can't remember seeing a fight where anyone has laid a glove on him yet and most of his fights have been over after he has landed his first punch.

The Nicaraguan was very experienced, was indeed a very good win, and as he said himself in interview it will have done no harm

I know it is the usual BS that you get when Sky are trying to flog a PPV fight but Bellew & Cleverley just seems overhype for two average fighters...or am I missing something??  Suppose the averageness might make it a decent tear-up

Plus, Bellew just looks like a bloke built of a lego with a brain from the local village idiot.

Not a good fight that.  Cleverly not a cruiserweight and Bellew nowhere near top class.  Both talking about selling the Millennium Stadium out for a third fight is borderline delusional.  Could have sworn I saw Craig Gardner with Bellew in the post fight footage.
