Title: Villa 3-0 Birmingham 1980
Post by: Deano's Mullet on January 24, 2014, 08:31:57 AM

Highlights from the championship winning season. Before my days obviously but loving seeing the old footage over and over again. What a talent Gary Shaw was.

Yet another local derby that we had to negotiate on our way to the title. The away game a couple of months before was my first Villa/Blues derby. On paper that was probably the best side Small Heath have had in my time.

That's what I was thinking. They played well in that game but class always rises to the top.

Geddis made a few appearances and got goals but is generally not seen as anything special.

Were his other appearances replacing Withe?  And were they also through suspension or injury?

He replaced Withe during his two suspensions and on one occasion due to injury I think. He also replaced a 'rested' Gary Shaw against Albion.

I remember that game well. We found out from the Evening Mail mob in the Queens Head before the game that With was out and were worried but probably Geddis' most important contribution for us.

I found out from a senior member of that mob that Big Ron was likely to get sacked. This was in a pub near Selhurst Park.

Geddis was a more than able replacement for Withe and Shaw, scored some important goals, remember Southampton at home late in the season.

As for the Blues game, he was excellent that day against a good side. I had the pleasure of carrying on boozing after the game and going to see a concert later in the evening in town. Very funny comedian by the name of Jasper Carrott, who came on stage saying he was a Walsall fan. He took the abuse well to be fair

Another great memory from the best season ever.  In some respects it still seems like only yesterday, in others it's several lifetimes ago...

The history books and stats will tell you David Geddis was a good player, a player who won an FA Cup winners medal with Ipswich then League Championship and European Cup winners medals with Villa, but I never rated him personally. He worked hard but was limited and hadn't got the guile to play regularly at the top level, though I can't deny he deputised effectively for Withe and Shaw for odd games. He was transferred to Barnsley the year after we won the European Cup, a move which pretty much summed up his ability.

"Happy Christmas,Happy Christmas, Happy Christmas Birmingham!". Noticed how Sid popped up somewhere in most frames- absolutely vital that season. Remember puzzling why Sir Ron would always have Rimmer rolling the ball to Sid just outside the box, then Sid would place the perfect pass leading to an attack-genius. Geddis was often anonymous in games but scored some goals critical to our championship that year. Wasn't he a model for
a mail order catalogue or something?

He had a good goal scoring record in the second division with Barnsley and then Small Heath.

Geddis looked quality in another match that season against Southampton. He scored and set up another as we came from 1-0 down to win 2-1 against a Keegan inspired Saints.

Geddis was a great deputy for Withe and Shaw, was under massive pressure when first bought and fans never took to him. Always remember the Blackburn FA Cup replay when through on goal one on one with the keeper and fecking pulled his hamstring, summed up his early days at the club. Did well for us when we won the league.

Whatever Geddis did or didn't do in a Villa shirt, he scored some vital goals for us. He's one of the 14.
