Title: Tennis 2014
Post by: UK Redsox on January 14, 2014, 10:05:35 PM
Maria Redsox is currently injured, therefore tennis does not exist at the moment.

Murray going well so far, as is Federer, who had an interestingly easy time against Tsonga. Does he have one last title run in him?

He's changed his racket, which seems to be helping at the moment. I'd like Federer to have one last hurrah, as he's been one of the great sportsmen of his or indeed any generation.

I just can't see him being able to beat Murray, Nadal and Djokovic in succession though.

And now working with Stefan Edberg I read somewhere? Brilliant, my favourite modern tennis player working with my favourite player ever.

Seems to be a trend of hiring 80/90s players as coaches just now - Lendl with Murray, Becker with Djokovic and Edberg with Federer. Now that would be a brilliant doubles series!

Novak getting a real test 2 sets to 1 down.. just watching  djokovic is fascinating.
Federer is expected to beat Murray Wednesday morning the legend fed has played a lot more tennis recently that he has done previous few seasons ...and Murray only just come back. Rfed proving he still awesome and a crowd favorite. Will be a good match up but roger to take that one

Wawrinka was playing some great stuff at the US Open so I'm not sure just how much of a shock it is. Obviously a shock that Djokovic is out so early though.

Federer partying like it's 2005. However, I can't see even him beating Nadal in the semis - Nadal's had his weak match, that's it for the tournament.

Well, remembering who was in the earlier rounds I'll go for Li Na and Ana Ivanovic, but may have now been knocked out.

I think Cibulkova knocked out Sharapova.

Nadal with a back injury which might end this final early. I feel sorry for him, but this is the way he plays - this extreme physicality was always going to cause injuries. Every player's style has its payoffs, and this is his.

I would think we stand quite a good chance against Italy? Switzerland a lot tougher if both Wawrinka and Federer play. A  very good effort by the team.

I do think the Davis Cup is one of the most pointless competitions in sport. They should insist that you have different players in every match.

I do think the Davis Cup is one of the most pointless competitions in sport. They should insist that you have different players in every match.

I think to be a genuine "team" event you should have to have at least three players in it.

I'd maybe merge it with the Fed Cup and have it so players play a set rather than a match, with a tie-break only when it gets to 10-10.

Nine mens singles matches with three men all playing each other, nine womens singles in the same format, and three doubles in the three different formats. So, basically best of 21 sets.
Title: Re: Tennis 2014
Post by: UK Redsox on April 05, 2014, 12:02:45 PM
I agree that the Davis Cup format needs expanding to at least three singles players.

Teams with one great player are at too much of an advantage in the current format.

We have one player in the top 100. It's only because of the ludicrous format that we even got as far as the Quarter-Finals of the so-called "team" event.

Meh, Nadal will dick him on Friday

Nah, I like Murray, I reckon he's so unlucky to be around at exactly the same time as Nadal, Djokovic and Federer, he'd have ruled the World otherwise. He's coming into form for Wimbers (as I assume it's called by those who frequent Henman Hill) though.

Not entirely.

He was born in Mallorca. He lives in Mallorca. His uncle played professional football for Mallorca. He "supports"... Real Madrid. So he's a glory-hunting twat.

Bjorg didn't grunt. Laver didn't grunt. None of Djokovic, Murray or Federer grunt. So it's obvious you don't need to grunt to be successful and anyone who does grunt does so to put off their opponent which is cheating.

He used a Spanish racist term to criticise a South American opponent.

I've noticed he tends to pick his bum most when his opponent is on top to slow him down. So, another form of cheating, and dirty soap-dodging, bum-picking cheating too.

He's also a multi-millionaire but still seems unable to afford shampoo.

He's a bellend.

Sadly, he'll still beat Murray who is a pretty classy bloke and he'll win the French Open again. Easily.

Not entirely. What is it he finds so fascinating in his sphincter I wonder? He's forever picking at it. Maybe the pain in his bum is what causes all the grunting? Not sure why it would cause the Mallorca-born nephew of a Mallorca player to support Real Madrid though, the glory-hunting twat.

Anyone see that shot from between his feet by Kyrgios today v Nadal?  Remarkable.

Yeah watching live as, stupidly, I'd forgotten about the football. Doesn't sound like I missed much though in the first half an hour of the Argie game.

Nice to see that racist, grunting, bum-picking, shampoo-dodging, glory-hunting, time-wasting, cheating twat Nadal out.

not a favourite of yours ?   ::) ::)

Not entirely. What is it he finds so fascinating in his sphincter I wonder? He's forever picking at it. Maybe the pain in his bum is what causes all the grunting? Not sure why it would cause the Mallorca-born nephew of a Mallorca player to support Real Madrid though, the glory-hunting twat.

top notch ranting my friend...top notch...:)

Murray out. He was basically untested in the early rounds and breezed through. In hindsight, it may have been better if he'd had harder opposition going into this match.

Still, this Dimitrov looks like a decent player.

I'd hardly say the world no 23 and world no 18 are not strong opposition.

Dimitrov played pretty flawlessly in fairness. However, I'm sure even Dimitrov is pretty stunned as to how poor Murray was today. Comfortably the worst he's ever played at Wimbledon.

Really want Federer to win it this year.

Murray hasn't been the same since Lendl left - he got that extra few percent out of Murray to make him a winner.

In fairness, I think he's been injured quite a bit since he split from Lendl. This new bloke he's got coaching him hasn't had much time yet.

Something tells me you don't like Nadal. What's with the "racist" comment ? I've never heard of him being accused of being a racist. As for the rest, over his career so far he's been a winner and one of the greatest players of all time.

Of course he's been a winner, so have Chelsea but I don't have to like them.

He made a xenophobic comment about a South American player. We don't seem to have an equivalent word in English but I think it would be a bit like calling a North African a "w*g".

Plus he "supports" Real Madrid who have a long history of far-right support.

I can understand why someone from Madrid would support them, but for someone who lives in Mallorca the only reasons for following them are either being a glory-hunting twat or being a Fascist sympathiser, or both.

Then there is the inexcusable grunting. Federer doesn't do it. You don't need to do it. It can only be done to try to put the opponent off.

And he's always picking his bum. Now apart from being DISGUSTING, it's also a form of cheating. Watch him play. When his opponent is getting on top his bum-picking increases. He uses it as a delaying tactic to disrupt his opponent'a rhythm.

But mainly, I dislike him for being a Real Madrid fan. I would be just as quick to call Murray or Henman a twat if they suddenly announced that they were a Celtic/Man U fan.

I prefer Blose fans to glory-hunters.

If your referring to the incident with Guardio, Nadal is supposed to have called him a "sudaco asshole", which actually means "South American asshole"' hardly a racist comment in my book. And that comment was made after Guardio had called Nadal a "smart ass". Other than that I've never read or heard anything about a racist comment he may or may not have made. If say a Scottish person called me a smart ass or jackass, I'd probably retort and call them a Scottish twat or something.

Regarding supporting Real Madrid I read that as a kid because his uncle played for Barcelona his father bought him a Madrid shirt as a joke and he carried on supporting them. I don't think he needs to do any glory hunting he's earned enough glory doing his own sport.
I agree Real Madrid were financially supported by the Franco regime, but that ended in 1975, 9 years before Nadal was born. If Hitler had been a Hertha Berlin fan would you call all German Hertha Berlin supporters who don't live in Berlin and born after Hitlers death, Nazi's?

Grunting - 99% of the players do it, Murray does it, Djorkovic does it, I think it probably has something to do with putting some effort into a serve or shot, nothing to do with putting off an opponent.
Picking his bum as you call it. Jesus Christ he's running round the court like bloody lightening his pants are bound to get stuck up his arse crack. Don't tell me you've never had to do it. Football players gob and spit on the pitch, that's disgusting.

Nadal is a superstitious person and a lot of what he does especially before serving are from habit, he does the same thing every time.

Last of all, I don't prefer Blose fans to anything, full stop. I don't give a shit about who supports Man U or the Rad Mad's or where their fans come from.

Britain's agonising one year wait for a Wimbledon Champion is over. Congratulations to this Brummie (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jordanne_Whiley) who triumphed with her Japanese partner in the Women's Wheelchair event.

In recent years I've only ever seen Serena Williams be called for wasting time - even though Nadal and others such as Maria (Miserable Bint) Sharapova are far worse.

There's also the "I'm losing, pretend I'm injured" tactic that certain players are really good at - such as the reigning Wimbledon champion.

Tennis used to be a game full of style and skill, serve and volley... - now it is just about who can hit the ball the hardest, grunt the loudest, clench their fist and scream "COME ON!!!"

I think playing at your own speed is an accepted part of the game, when you're serving. Deliberately slowing down play when your opponent is waiting to serve is considered by people more expert than me to be terrible gamesmanship and Nadal does it all the time.

So, is the official H&V view of Nadal that we think the same of him as we do of Bono and Steve Hodge ?

Watching US Open qualifying this week - saw a couple of matches with Tornado Black. Just knew there was some daft story behind the name (and it explains why she looked so miserable on the court too).

Cilic about to beat Federer in straight sets too. Feels like a change of the Guards. Not that long ago you would expect an Open final to have at least one of Nadal, Djokovic, Murray or Federer. Murray's going to have a job on his hands just to get his ranking up so that he doesn't get drawn against the top seeds earlier in competitions.
