Benni is on The Fantasy Football show this Friday on Sky Sports 1. I seem to recall a great debut against Wimbledon I think? He did everything but score in that game. He was some player. Be interesting to hear his views now.
-
Forgot to add the programme is scheduled for 6.30pm.
-
Yeah I remember that game too. He was superb. I liked Beni. Wish he could have stayed longer.
-
Sound just set up to record it!
-
Remember his hat-trick against Leeds in the FA Cup? To think we had him and Merson in the final and the negative way we played....
-
God, how we could do with him OR Merse now!!!
-
I thought that this was another villakicks thread suggesting we should sign someone using Randy's DeLorean
-
I put Carbone in with Ginola, great players who played for the wrong managers at times
ie - Gregory, Graham
-
a 28yr old Carbone would be perfect in our side now.
-
I loved Carbone as a player. It's amazing to think now he only played for us for half a season. Sadly he was your stereotypical foreign mercenary, chosing to join a club like Bradford City for the money rather than stay with Villa who had just been to an FA Cup Final.

Sheffield Wednesday had some brilliant players at times during the 90's including Benni, Di Canio, Blinker etc.

In which he fluffed an open goal which would have levelled the tie with a few minutes left. Ran off in shame?

Fantastic stuff. I remember walking home and being passed by a bunch of Villa fans in a car singing "Carbone!" and thinking "I reckon we could really get somewhere in the cup this year".

My 2 abiding memories of that game are his screamer from 30+ yards and Merse dripping with blood after setting Carbone up for a goal.

The most over-rated player we've had, with the possible exception of Paul Merson.

He blotted his copy book with me when he ran to the Holte to celebrate a goal and lifted his shirt to reveal a T-Shirt showing the figure he wanted to sign for us permanently, implying the Club were being unreasonable about it, and it was (I think) £35,000 a week.
-
I thought Carbone was a bit over-rated but I thought Merson was terrific. I didn't have a season ticket at the time due to work commitments but I specifically remember his games against Watford on the return of SGT and Coventry when they went down.

I agree about Carbone but Merson was fantastic (albeit after a slow start), to this day he was the last player to get me up off my seat with excitement every time he got the ball.
-
A welcome breath of fresh air at the time, unlike Ginola
-
None of the current dross are fit to lace Carbone's boots!

Just seen that hat-trick again versus Leeds in the FA Cup. That second from 35 yards was particularly brilliant! Merse said Beni could hit the ball so hard for a small guy - so little back-lift. Wish he could've stayed much longer!

Merson was fantastic against Wimbledon, Derby, Coventry et al but I cannot remember him having one good game against any of the top clubs. Carbone's flashes of his true potential were even rarer.
I just wonder how much Gregory wanted either in his team deep down?
-
Merson was exciting and frustrating in equal measures.

Seconded

Merson was class. He almost single handedly livened up many games for us which at times under Gregory were quite arduous to sit through. If he'd been fitter and a tad more reliable he'd have waltzed into the England team at the time. I do agree though, he never quite did it enough against the better teams, one reason why we couldn't quite step up from top 6 to genuine title competitors, though we sat on the top of the table a couple of periods under Gregory.
Carbone I really enjoyed watching. That really is the biggest shame of all, that those two couldn't offer any spark in the cup final.
