I seem to remember reading that the Villa v Arsenal match will be moved to Sunday depending on the outcome of the cup matches my friends who are Villa fans want to go to an evening match so would like tickets but not if it is a Sunday match so does anybody know if it still Monday evening?
Dave - edited as we may as well have a pre-match thread.
-
Should be now, was only going to be moved if Villa or Arsenal need FA Cup replays...neither do
-
Cazorla, Ozil, Ramsay, Walcott against our back line... my god.
-
Can they move this game to 1am, behind closed doors with no TV cameras allowed? That would be ideal.

Monday evening 8pm.
-
We will win ffs.
-
Cazorla, Ozil, Ramsay, Walcott against our back line... my god.
Ramsey and Walcott may well be unavailable due to injury.
-
We will do a smash and grab on both Arsenal and Liverpool.
6 points Mr Lambert. Do you hear us ? 6 points.
-
Cazorla, Ozil, Ramsay, Walcott against our back line... my god.
Ramsey and Walcott may well be unavailable due to injury.
lets face it Barry Ferguson and Stan Lazaridis would rape our defenders
-
saw AVFC , AND Arsenal today. The result is a formality.

Not cool.

What's not cool?

I think he's referring to using the word 'rape' in a footballing context. I would tend to agree.

Indeed.
-
Can't we forfeit this one? I don't think I can bear any more misery.
-
saw AVFC , AND Arsenal today. The result is a formality.
It's like they play completely different sports to be honest.
-
Villa 30% Arsenal 70%
outcome...doesn't even need mentioning.
-
It will be 3-2 Villa just relax.
-
It will be 3-2 Villa just relax.
Put the cooking sherry away old chap
-
If they have an off day and we are at the top of our game....
3-0 to Arsenal
-
Arsenal under the lights? It's going to be a walk in the park for us, I actually think I'm delirious now
-
Is anyone looking forward to going to this game? I can't recall being less optimistic about a game for yonks. Turn up, take what they'll shove up us, go home.
-

Yes they play football ans we do kick and rush however without worrying about the ball. So if we can persuade them to play our game that we will win.
-
I'm desperately trying to flog my ticket on Viagogo for this. I've had to relist it at £15 because no one will buy it!!!
Can't we just not turn up and take the 3-0 defeat? That's certainly how its worked for non-fulfilment of fixtures in a few leagues I've played in before!

Can we have an agreement with opta not to show the possession stats for this game ever. Has a team ever had single digits possession for 90 minutes before?
-
I think the only way we can keep the score down to a respectable level is if we purposely get five of our players sent off in the first few minutes. Abandon match. Home in time for early supper.
-
They are Arse, we are Pants. We will win.
-
I'm going to this one because Amfy has swanned off to Australia and in a final act of revenge for something I must have said, has given me her ST for this game.
Thanks a bunch Amfy.

I didn't actually mean they would sexual assault Clark, Lowton, Luna and Baker. That wouldn't really make any sense

LOL - while I actually think the game will be tighter than some are fearing, this comment made me really laugh. I needed that after yesterday :)
-
I hate Monday night as a time to watch football. Rarely go to these but the mother is an Arsenal fan so very reluctantly taking here to this! She actually thanks us for winning at the emirates as that sparked Arsenal into life. That game seems like it was years ago.
Was really hoping this would be moved back to Sunday anyway.
-
I predict a proper hammering.
-
i feel sick.

3 times already this season I have got a ticket for £15 in P6 on the half way line, once in Row CC behind the 3D cameras.
-
Game will be all over inside 20 mins.
0-4 defeat.
-
As someone who now works weekends I am looking forward to being able to attend.
But reading some of the comments I guess I should start again in a couple of years when we are in the 3rd division.
-
I expect us to give Arsenal and Liverpool incredibly easy games. We're total bobbins at the moment and we've got too many players out injured or off form. We don't look like scoring off our own backs either. We need the opposition to make errors to help us. That may well happen in the next couple of games of course, but the quality of the attacks we face mean they'll be able to compensate by putting 3-4 past us in both games.
-

It's just not a great word to use in any sort of context apart from in its legal sense.
It tends to downplay the significance and brutality of the act of rape, when it's being used to describe how easily arsenal will score against our defence. Obviously that wasn't your intention.
-
I think they will murder us.
-
I think they will loitering with intent us.

It won't be a patch on the old 3rd Division.

We'll bounce back for this one. Benteke to score again and we will nick a 3-2 win. What are the odds on 3-2 with Benteke to score?
-

I'll give you my house
-
Delph and Gabby will score the other two.
-
Theo Walcott out for 6 months.
-
Giroud will probably be out as well.
-
Genuinely gutted for Theo, I was really looking forward to him at the World Cup.
-
Well as Walcotts out, Giroud might be out,Wilshere will be too busy being interviewed and showing off his tattoos to play, and Bendtners out
we may have a chance....just may you understand.

You forgot that our distraction is now out the way too :).
-
Bugger off with all this negativity. They will attack us because they are arsenal and they will expect 3 points - luckily for us, the only way we know how to score goals is on the counterattack. So going by that logic we will win!
Maybe all the terrible football and anger and bickering and disappointment have scrambled my brains but i'm honestly more confident of getting some kind of result here than I would be against a team that will come and park the bus.
-
Disappointing for Arsenal, for England, my fantasy Football team and for Walcott himself but not so for his next opponent. He'd have torn Luna a new arsehole next Monday night.
-
Let's just get right into them and maybe whoever starts for them may be out for the second half of the game as well.
Oh, winky thing...
-
Expecting a good game and more of a contest than the Man U game was.
3-2 Villa.
-
Will this grow and prosper to become the actual pre-match thread? Stay tuned.
-

The idea that a team might come to Villa Park thinking they need to park the bus in order to get a result is a bit far-fetched.
-
Game will be over after 3rd on 28 minutes. They will relax. We will come on strong between the 63rd minute and 77th minute and look very good and very dangerous. They will geta corner in the 82nd minute and may or may not score. Our confidence will be dented by it and will go off the boil for the final 8 minutes.
So fucking predictable.
-
I think the crowd will coach the team for this match. Any fannying around at the back with pointless passing the players will soon be let know it's not what's wanted. The remainder of the week should be spent practicing throw ins apart from Luna who will be given a manikin in an Arsenal shirt with the words "This is your man stay with him at all times"

Theo Walcott out for 6 months.
Its ok, we`ll just nobble Suarez towards the end of the seas.....oh, i forgot, you`d need some english players around to do that.
-
Well as all of their key goal scorers this season are on the sidelines, we might actually have a chance if we don't gift them a stupid backpass (Are you listening Weiman, Bacuna, Baker.........)
-

That's the spirit mate :)
-
We'll have 5% possession and only 3 attempts all game.
3-2 to Villa it is then. Benteke to get all 3 and the London media to go into meltdown over Tekkers to Arsenal rumours...
-
Since someone has mentioned Tekkers to Arsenal I can see him putting himself in the shop window for this one.
-

3 attempts? Wasn't that what we managed against Sheffield U? Or was it 2? I think it was 2 on target...at least!
-
I'm trying not to think about it but come the day I am sure I will, against all logic, have convinced myself we can get something from the game.
-
We cant keep losing at home.
Entertaining 2-2 draw from this (IF Vlaar is back).
-

Entertaining 2-2 draw from this (IF Vlaar is back).
With this lot we can!
there like rabbits in front of head lights,
WE HAVE NO PREMIERSHIP QUALITY.
I LOVE THE VILLA, but were shit

We'll win. Piece of piss
-
We'll win. Piece of piss
I agree. Think it'll be 3-2 to us.
-
WE HAVE NO PREMIERSHIP QUALITY.
Guzan, Benteke, Vlaar, Clark, Delph, Gabby.
If you want to say the squad is weak, I think most people would agree. If you want to say that we have too many players not of premiership quality, I think a lot of people would agree. We have NO premier league quality - clearly not true.

You dropped this '.
-
0-4 Defeat
Shots on target - 2
Possession - 35%
-
2-0 Arsenal.
-
We're great away from home and this will be like playing away from home.
Villa win.
-
We're great away from home and this will be like playing away from home.
Villa win.
This, but only if we have Big Dutch Ron in the side
-
We're due a win at home. Might aswell be against them.
2-0 home win.
Benteke 44
Luna 88
-
My optimism is hugely limited for this. 2/3-0 Arsenal.
-
What's the latest on Vlaar? Is he likely to be back?
-
With VLaar in the team 2-2,if we are without him then 3-0 to them
-
Oh fuck it 2-1 Villa.
-
I fancy a 1-1 on this.
Would go with a front two of Gabby and Benteke and flood the midfield, maybe go 3-5-2 if Vlaar is fit.
Our record ain't too bad against Arsenal, even when they beat us they tend to be close matches.
-
There going to be well pumped up for this and will want revenge 3-1 arsenal
-

Sorry but couldn't help pick up on the irony of this, but it would seem that to use the 'r' word in a footballing (or even cricket) context is a definite no no, but murder is ok? Is it ok to 'downplay the significance and brutality of the act of 'murder', when it's being used to describe how easily arsenal will score against our defence'?
Anyway, i think we're going to get De Hammered.
-
villa 1 (
Holtby Wynaldum Defour Hoolahan El Ahmadi) Arsenal 0
-
0-4 to Arsenal
-
I dunno about the score, but I reckon we'll have <20% possession.
-
How much possession did we have at the emirates?
It does seem like a mirage now but we did actually play really well that day.
-
I see first double of the season looming. 1-0 to us.
-
How much possession did we have at the emirates?
Enough to score 3.
-
1-2 Chris Price for us. Steve Williams & Martin Hayes for them.
-
1-0, Benteke late on.
-
2-1 Whittingham and Townsend, Bossie will save a penalty from Ian Wright too.
-
1-0 either way.
But with my luck, to them with a 96th minute controversial penalty!
Or own goal.
Or "offside".
Or "handball".
Ever the optimist!
UTV!
-
I honestly think we'll get something.
An absolute bollocking.
-
2-1
Gabby (2)
-
1-7
-
1-7
Is that the odds?
-
I think we will lose
-
If we couldn't muster ourselves against Sheffield United, I can't see us doing it against Arsenal. I'd love for us to scrape a win somehow but I just can't see it happening.
-

1-7
Ted Drake scores for Arsenal?
-
We had them on the opening day! But this time... errr?
-
I can't see Arsenal taking us lightly again. They'll make damn sure we don't do them over again.
3 points to the Gunners and they'll barely break sweat.
-
They didn't take us lightly in August, we just gave them a doings.
-

Sadly, hard to disagree with.
0-3
-
One of the few reasons to be cheerful right now is our goal difference compared to the same time last season. This game, followed by Liverpool and Everton could be where that all goes to pot.
OK we'll lose but let's hope it's by a narrow margin.
-
I hope we win by a massive fucking margin.
-
I hope we win by a massive fucking margin.
I'd love that. But?
-
Hope we sneak something, else it could be embarrassing being beaten by I side
that might have any recognised forwards in the starting line up!!!!! UTV
-
Both the Ram and the Ox should return in Biblical fashion for Arsenal on Monday apparently. I can't deny, I'm a bit worried about this game, particularly in the light of no signings in the first week of January.
-
Lawrenson being nice about us for a change in predictions. And De Niro & Stallone think we will win. So that's good, then.
-
Lawrenson being nice about us for a change in predictions. And De Niro & Stallone think we will win. So that's good, then.
Well of Bob and Sly say we'll win, I'll put us down for a victory.
-
Easy Villa win. Weimann to score.
-
As we're huge underdogs going into the game Monday, it probably is good to get the backing of one of cinemas greatest underdogs, Mr Balboa himself. If we beat Arsenal it'll be like Rocky besting genetically enhanced beast of a man, Ivan Drago.
-
Or it would be like reproducing our most comfortable win of the season, where Arsenal were lucky to have round posts, otherwise it would have been 4.
-
Robert De Niro is a good lad.
-
Robert De Niro is a good lad.
You mean a good fella?
-
Robert De Niro is a good lad.
A game at Villa Park can become a bad dream
-
Lawrenson being nice about us for a change in predictions. And De Niro & Stallone think we will win. So that's good, then.
Well he has predicted a draw which is a surprise for him, but he does have ago at the fans for daring to criticize Lambert.
Like Manure, the match will hang on any stupid mistakes made by us in our final 3rd. I actually believe we could win but hand them easy chances bearing down on goal and I expect a similar 3-0 loss.
-
I think it's wishful thinking from Lawro, as he needs Arsenal to start dropping points soon if Liverpool are to win the title. Nice to hear Robert De Niro say the words 'Aston Villa' though, if a bit surreal.
-
@MatKendrick: Agbonlahor available to face Arsenal. Villa will check on Vlaar and Baker, but the pair have not trained yet. Bennett has resumed training.
-
Bennett resuming training could be a bigger benefit than we think. If he can re-produce some of his late-season form, and Luna be given the rest that he so badly needs, it would be an instant improvement to the side.
I also think that Herd could play a big part for us, between now and the end of the season, although I think I'd play him in midfield to add some steel and ball-winning capability.
-
Us 3 Them 1
-
Well as all of their key goal scorers this season are on the sidelines, we might actually have a chance..
We struggled to get in the West Ham half when they didn't have a striker on the pitch for most of the game. Obviously playing a back five and three defensive midfielders didn't help our cause. Hopefully we won't adopt the same negative tactics and with every Villa player will have the game of their lives, we might actually have a chance.
We'll probably up our game but it still won't be enough. 1-3 Arsenal.
-
Same manager=same approach, sadly villa 0 Arsenal 3
-
Possession 25 : 75, Attempts 2 : 22, On target 2 : 11, Goals 2 : 1. Ramsey o.g., Tonev : Podolski. Wenger to rail against the gods and Neil Swarbrick.
-
Hope Vlaar is fit for this, 2-2 Benteke, Albrighton. Podolski, Wilshere for them.
UTV!
-
Bob Wilson is a wanker.
By all accounts one of the nicest people around. But when the next game up is Villa v Arsenal Bob Wilson is a wanker.
-
We literally have nothing to lose in this and should throw the kitchen sink at them .
-
We literally have nothing to lose in this and should throw the kitchen sink at them .
I'd like to second this emotion. UTV! They are up for being frightened, and we have Bob on our side. As well as Rocky.
-
I can't make the game, sadly.
Whatever happens on the pitch, and let's face it... We'll probably lose.
With all the talk about homophobia in football. Why does't the Holte sing all the old songs for Der Hammer?
Let's bring football forward in only the way The Villa can.
Shooooooooooooooooooooooot!
-
A couple of Gooner friends are coming up and I'm meeting them off their coach and going for a drink with them. My thought is that the Sacred Heart is a decent place to go with away fans. Any other suggestions where to go? Bartons is a bit too much of a walk.
-
As a pure, polyunsaturated pessimist, I expect seven shades of shite to be kicked out of us.
-

The Hare of the Dog is ok, they do have away fans in there from time to time and the beer is reasonably priced.
-
You could have posted that in the arsenal pre match thread perhaps
-

Edited a bit and UTV, we will prevail!
Shoooooooooooooooooooooooot!
-
I don't seem to recall any songs we sang about him. Mainly because our creative juices usually extend to 'there's only one...' Or 'empty seats m'lord'
-
I have predicted a crowd on one of DC5's competitions in another thread on here, and when predicting, I had completely forgotten that this is on Monday night, not on the weekend.
So I will not be there but I need you all to go, to preserve my top of the Championship status.
Thanks a lot, love to all. XX
It would be great if Villa could win as well.
God, wouldn't it.
But we have form, this season!
-
1-1 Benteke equaliser, lots of moaning from Wenger about something.
-
Anyone who truly believes we can get a result deserves utmost credit for a positive outlook.
Or another drink.
-

If Vlaar makes it Monday I reckon a draw is possible, with Lowton at centre back, no chance.
-
We literally have nothing to lose in this and should throw the kitchen sink at them .
Agreed but the only fault in your plan is we'll chain ourselves to it when we throw it out the window.
-

I too was scratching my head trying to think of one.

Then just sing his name. We have the opportunity to show that football might not be as backward as the world thinks it is.
If there are any other players struggling to come to terms with their sexuality, can we not try to show them that they may have support from the stands?
If I had more time and money I'd get a banner made for him.
-
We will win sooooooooooooooooooo have it ! ;D
I do dislike people who do those smiley face things.
3-1 Villa
;D 8) ;) ::) :'(

Hitzlsperger.
Hope that people have a sheet big enough and spelling accurate enough for this wonderful young player!

and have to replace the dishwasher.

I think that's what we should do. Make some banners and sing his name.
Stuttgart will do it. Where are the Brigada mob?
-
I Predict A Riot.
-
Us 1
Them 3
-
Whatever happens on the pitch please no more booing.
-
Not a game we expect to win so expectations are low, therefore nothing to lose just go out there and play some football, still expect us to lose but we will have better opportunities of winning games than this one.
Not going to get upset with this result already moving on to the next game.
-
0-5
That is all.

Yes, nothing to loose and a very winnable game against red bin dippers, so maybe write that one off as well.
Things will get worse before they get worse...
cant we get Paul Mcgrath back aided with Sid in the middle.
yes I know im desperate, lets just hope the bottom 8 all loose their next two games as well

Completely agree. Taking my daughter to this one (son at work) and her last game was Man City so god knows what she's expecting. I'm going with the idea we play better against better teams (ie counter attacking) so who knows.
Voted for draw as cant bring myself to go for loss, might even have a sneaky bet on 0-0 (as long as Lowton isnt CB)
-
Anyone else glad this isn't till Monday night, thereby guaranteeing an angst-free weekend?
-
Without vlaar, just a standard two or three nil defeat.
-
however shit we are , there is always one team we will do the double over ;)
-
hate Arsenal
as I use to take my nephew to Villa all the time , his french Dad never took him to a football game .
Then one day he says to me I support Arsenal now , like my Dad does , even thou he has never to this day seen Arsenal play and I took him to villa 50 times , bast**d ;(
some come on Villa please
-
Hate Arsenal too, mainly because of their glory hunter fans, biggest set of bellends in the league.
-
I don't mind Arsenal. Over the years, since football began in 92, I've enjoyed watching them play, particularly players like Wright, Bergkamp, Henry, Bobby etc. They've mostly played great stuff under Wenger too. In terms of watching matches nuetrally in the past 20 or so years, I've been able to enjoy watching Arsenal play more so than any other club in the league.
That said in terms of fans, I've never met a Gooner who wasn't a complete and utter c**t to be honest.
-
Briefly flicked over to Soccer Saturday on SSN. Listening to those muppets discuss Monday night is even more depressing than thinking about it.
-
Anyone else glad this isn't till Monday night, thereby guaranteeing an angst-free weekend?
Absolutely. In most spheres of life, once Mondays are out of the way, the rest of the week goes quickly for me.
-

Obviously not a bastard then!

Sadly yes. Also there are far fewer reminders of a defeat on a Monday night than a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. Plus by the time I get home it is nearly time for bed. Apart from the Sunderland game when time for bed was after watching the extended highlights. Twice.

I have predicted a crowd on one of DC5's competitions in another thread on here, and when predicting, I had completely forgotten that this is on Monday night, not on the weekend.
So I will not be there but I need you all to go, to preserve my top of the Championship status.
Thanks a lot, love to all. XX
Being as you asked I will go Louise. I will PM you with my bank account details. I will take 9 others with me. So with match tickets and pre and post match expenses I would be grateful if you can deposit £600 today? Staying at the top is not cheap :)

1-4 with Benteke getting ours
Horrendous booing at half time and the end from the home support, and Lambert walking off looking grumpy the same as always
I've decided to watch it in the local curry house instead

DON"T. Turn up and defend every attack, head out every corner, thread a through ball to Gabby for the winner.

I'm fully expecting the usual VP treatment, a miserable game and inevitable defeat followed by much moaning all the way home but you won't stop me going. UTV

19 optimistic nutcases out there!

Aston Villa 1 (One) - 1 Arsenal.

A routine 2-0 win for Arsenal playing like its a pre-season match.

That sounds good. No curry houses in Solihull show the footy to my knowledge . Where is this establishment where you can eat curry and watch the footy? Sounds amazing.

More mature posters will remember Andy Lochhead faiing to score for god knows how many games. Benteke can't be that far off his record now. With Kozak out long term his place is guaranteed though. Lets see how much effort he puts in on Monday night shall we. You can lack confidence but lack of effort is inexcuseable.
-
I'm going for 1-1, following by endless Arsenal fans hitting the internet again, spouting venom at Wenger and the owners, crying because they didn't get 3 points against little old us.
-
I remember my dad coming down the youth club to ask my If I fancied going down the Villa v Arsenal
now the older people on here will know more , it was a week night , maybe a Wednesday ? but we did not get there to half time from Hinckley, now Im not sure but Arsenal were winning 1-0 at HT I think but I witnessed 5 goals in the second half and we won 5-1 , I think this is how it went , it was a bloody marvelous anyway .

As a pure, polyunsaturated pessimist, I expect seven shades of shite to be kicked out of us.

Yup. Just hope you are using the number 7 in a purely metaphorical context.

Since a team won't park the bus there are irrational glimmers of hope we could scrape a point, we do seem to pull results out of nowehere sometimes, so why not...
I think that's what we should do. Make some banners and sing his name.
Stuttgart will do it. Where are the Brigada mob?
I said on Der Hammer thread (amongst many other things)
I can't go to the Arsenal game as I live work/in London and have a voluteer commitment Monday night, but if I could go to the match I would like the applause for the 12th minute, and I'd even go further.
I'd also do a banner from the Upper Holte, just for the press shot, something like,
"#12 Tommy Hitz
We're not fickle
We just like you
Against homophobia
at Villa. Are you?"
& Thinking about it, I'd happily chuck anyone a few quid who could make that banner for Monday night. Small acts can be effective, it's on TV, timing is everything. See my prior suggestion, anyone (willing to be) in the upper holte up for it? feel free to PM me. Seeing that in the press would at least soften a bad result.
It's a bit rich to make suggestions when i'm not even there, but i am curious if anyone has anything planned? I wonder if even such a banner is a step too far for some in 2014. Just curious....?
-
A Tommy Hitz banner would be absolutely fantastic, not many fans at other clubs would do that I and it would look absolutely brilliant for Villa to do so and really support him. Villa to again be at the forefront, this time in bringing football out of the dark ages. Just thinking about that goal against the Baggies, from my seat in the Holte it felt like the best view in the house. Do do do do Hitzlsperger do do do do Hitzlsperger (Pigbag!).
Can't see anything other than a dull 0-2 loss tomorrow, I'm not going though so could easily be a jammy 2-1 win! Hope so.

Shafali hasn't told me what the weather is likely to be tommorrow night. Assuming its the same as today the likes of Wilshere will not be up for it. It will be a game for men and Sylla must play and prove his worth.
I would man mark Rosicky closely and stop him making runs. I think a lot depends on Marc Albrighton. We know he will try hard. Lambert as is his wont will pick the dreadful Weimann again He can't stop himself.
I actually believe we have a chance because of the conditions.
At least I hope so!

Edit: wrong thread.
However, on this game, I'm significantly worried about Bacary Sagna. There's no way Luna will cope with his overlaps.

No. It was a soft challenge.

Aston Villa
Villa ended a five-match winless run in the Premier League with their New Year's Day victory at Sunderland.
They have lost half of their last 48 league matches at Villa Park, earning just 46 points in that period (W11, D13, L24).
Villa's tally of eight points at Villa Park is their worst record after 10 home matches of a top-flight season (based on three points for a win).
Paul Lambert's side have not scored in five of their last seven Premier League home games.
Villa have only scored seven goals at home, the fewest by any team in the division.
Christian Benteke has not scored for 11 Premier League matches. It's 13 hours and 29 minutes since his last goal, against Newcastle in September.

Anyone who truly believes we can get a result deserves utmost credit for a positive outlook.
Or another drink.
If Vlaar makes it Monday I reckon a draw is possible, with Lowton at centre back, no chance.
If Lowton plays at CH, our reserve team defenders must be truly awful

Results today mean Arsenal are under lot of pressure. They must win otherwise its unlikely that they will regain top spot and that is going to be crushing after spending half the season sitting there.

Lambert claims possession is overrated as pass masters Arsenal visit Villa Park
By Neil Moxley

If points were handed out for possession, the Premier League table would make for unhappy reading for Aston Villa supporters.
Propped up by Crystal Palace, manager Paul Lambert would be under the most severe pressure on Monday evening to turn around his season.
As it is, Villa are sitting halfway up the table, albeit just a few points closer to the relegation zone than both their manager and supporters would like.
But it is testament to the energy of Villa’s side that they have fed off scraps on occasion. The statistics which damn and praise Lambert’s team in equal measure will certainly be put to the test against Arsenal.
During the course of Villa’s six wins so far in the Premier League, their average possession has been little more than half of that enjoyed by the opposition.
In one particular case, at St Mary’s against Southampton in December, Villa saw just 27 per cent of the ball, yet still they ended up winning 3-2. They fared similarly against Manchester City, despite Manuel Pellegrini’s side dominating the play to a similar degree.
Swansea City passed Villa off Villa Park but still could not take more than a point back to south-west Wales.
Lambert, like his mentor Martin O’Neill, is from the managerial school which will simply point to the scoreboard at the final whistle for justification. ‘Statistics are used as to how people want to portray them,’ said Lambert, ‘But if you talk to any manager, at whatever level, you have got to try to win.
‘That’s your main aim. That’s the main statistic and it’s one that can cover up some sins. It always does and probably always will.
‘I understand that against some of the bigger clubs, Manchester United and Chelsea for instance, that if you don’t have the ball you have to be resolute in what you are doing and see the game through.
‘But the one thing about our team is that if people do come on to us, then we can hurt them with the pace that we have got. We can use that as one of our weapons.
‘We have a threat with some pace up front. Do I want Swansea to come to Villa Park and enjoy all that possession? No, I don’t. No chance.
‘Okay, we got a point out of it and it was something to build upon against Sunderland. But possession statistics are absolutely useless if you don’t win.
‘Barcelona a few years ago had an incredible amount of possession against Inter Milan, but didn’t win when Jose Mourinho ended up winning the tie and the Champions League.’
Villa defender Matthew Lowton said that the club has a system of play that suits their mobility and energy levels. They may not be the best at keeping possession, but they certainly are athletic.
‘We don’t sit back and let the other team have it,’ said Lowton. ’But at the same time we aren’t going to just run into people’s faces and get out of position.
‘I think the Swansea game is what everyone’s talking about. We set out to keep the ball ourselves, but I think a lot of teams who watched us last season have decided to press us.
‘Teams have got in our faces a bit more. But it’s about getting the points. Maybe at times we set traps.
‘Everyone knows how quick Gabby Agbonlahor is, but Christian Benteke is back and Andi Weimann. It does frighten teams and we know it works. So what’s the point in trying to change it?’
Arsene Wenger will have noted that Agbonlahor’s pace was a key factor in Villa’s shock opening day victory at the Emirates. It will be interesting to see if those lessons are acted upon on Monday night.
-
His mumbling is getting more bizarre by the day.How does he think we will score without the ball?
-
Interesting to read a player's (Lowton) perspective on our tactics. Surprisingly candid.
-
I have been drinking so bear that in mind, but fuck the press and fuck the haters. I hope we beat Arsenal in the ugliest manner imaginable. The tears of the media and Wenger will sustain me for the weeks ahead :)

Andi Weimann? That really does show a lack of basic intelligence from Lambert.
I think the Weimann comment is from Lowton.
I also think the lack of possession, having to constantly run around, is part of the problem with fitness and injuries.
It also means when we do get the ball, our players are too scared to use it.
-
So, we are the only team in the World of football that doesn't need ball possession to win a game ?
Hopefully Benteke will scare the opposition so much that they will kick the ball into their own net 2-3 times every game.
How bizarre.

I cant find it right now but somebody on another forum posted a table with all of our games so far ranked in order of our possession %, and it is noticable that most of our wins were down the bottom (ie the less of the ball we had the more likely we were to win the game). I don't think thats a coincidence either, as the only way we can seem to score goals is on the counterattack, running into space, which your more likely to get when you spend a lot of the time without the ball. So it makes a degree of sense.
Like we've seen a million times though, its easy to counteract as all the opposition have to do is sit back and we can't break them down. And as it invites pressure you need to have a good backline, which we don't with Vlaar out. I have no problem with counterattacking being plan A for the time being, because it plays to our strengths, but we really really need a plan B.
-
a mate said to me that you can have all the possession in a game... it's what you actually do with that possession that counts...
he supports Middlesbrough.... :D
-
If we can win without the majority of possession, then I have no real issue with it. However, while the possession stat doesn't really count for anything, it can be an indicator of other issues which, if not addressed, can become real problems.
And for me it's movement.
When playing on the break, you basically have more space to run into due to the opposition being committed to an attack. This means our players can more easily get into a goal scoring position. When not playing on the break, they have less obvious runs to make and need to be a bit cleverer, which they're just not, unfortunately. I think we have players that can pass the ball well enough for us to keep it more, but not necessarily move so that we can keep it further up the pitch.
That may be stating the obvious a little, but when I see possession stats and think back to the actual game, it's more often the player off the ball who's to blame when we lose it and the bloke that gives it away usually has a real lack of options of what to do with it.
-
The other thing about playing on the break is that space which John refers to as available for players to run into, the temptation to lump it aimlessly into that space is huge, which is where playing on the break becomes defending and lumping it long, hopefully, something we've done way, way too often this season.
I appreciate it is because we are pretty clueless at building passing movements or otherwise unlocking defences, but it's pretty horrible stuff to watch, and more than anything else is the growing habit I'd like to see us break.
-
When we win 3-2 tonight, how will you lot celebrate?
Glass of Coca Cola and a Kinder egg for me I think. Then read a few chapters of the book I'm currently reading with some green tea.
So, we are the only team in the World of football that doesn't need ball possession to win a game ?
Hopefully Benteke will scare the opposition so much that they will kick the ball into their own net 2-3 times every game.
How bizarre.
;D
-
The problem, for me, is that the team (and Lambert) seems to accept that this is the way we play, but its the ONLY way we play, against any opposition, home or away.
Its almost like the media decided this is the way Villa play the game based on the Arsenal game at the start of the season and the club have bought into it.

I remember the Liverpool coach passing us on the M6 before the game and we looked at Clemence and my dad said he will have a back ache tonight picking the ball out the net , I just laughed back at him.
-
A bit worried about our next two games. :(
I think Liverpool game could be a repeat of the chelsea one . Suarez , Sturridge , Sterling , Coutinho and Gerrard against our defence , this one is the one Im most worried . We will lose both but this could be the one that really f**ks the season if we lose 6-0 or something.
-
I do love reading week in and week out before games predictions of how we will get 7-1, 8-0 or 6-0.

We haven't faced Suarez yet, this is without their other players being a threat.

Suarez was in form when we went up there and won 3-1 13 months ago. He didn't get a look in. Just one of those days I guess. I still don't understand how we won when we were utterly outplayed.
-
out of all the teams at the moment to play
I just think Liverpool away is not one of them , I know we are looking poor against most but this could hit the confidence even more
They look like they can score on every attack and even thou Suarez is probably for me best player in the world at the moment , I think Sterling will crucify Luna .
but hey , Im on the wrong thread.

I think poo will win 4-0 to be honest but I wouldnt bet my fish against a 6-0 . They are miles and miles ahead of us . Lets hope Ron is fit

Missing Men - 2-2 at home in 2008 against Arsenal.
We played them off the park but went 2-0 down and needed a last minute equaliser.
-
I cant wait for tonight. I'm having a chicken kebab! Only downside is I have to sit through a public execution first.
-
As the poll stands 85% cant see us winning tonight ( me included ) I can take a defeat, but i'm not sure I can tolerate another piss poor performance.
Come on lads give us something to cheer about !
-
We'll be shit. We'll lose. It'll be cold. Starting to not see the point in bothering.
I could quite easily not go later and be content.

Know what you mean. It's going to cost me £50 for a return from Reading for this.

You can thank Mr Lerner for his ''Bright Future'' vision for the club. 1-3 defeat.

I can't recall a game where I've been less optimistic ahead of going. And that includes numerous trips to Anfield, OT, Stamford Bridge etc.

Really?
I can remember feeling like this prior to loads of matches in previous years.
Every single time we've played Man United at home, for starters.
-
I sincerely hope I'm wrong, but it could be as bad 0-3 or 1-4? I just can't see how we can go from displaying rubbish form at Villa Park and then expect to be suddenly transformed into a team capable of beating one of the very best teams in the Premier League.
Good luck to the Villa boys and lets hope for the best.
Up the Villa.

What about when we were about to play Arsenal at home under Mcleish after the disaster at Spurs (Heskey and Hutton in midfield) and home maulings against Man Utd and Liverpool (the lead up to the goal we conceeded to Utd was the most emabrrassed I've felt as a Villa fan. We did not touch the ball once)?

Probably because they had 20 minutes of the game, we had 70.

Really. There's something about this team, at this time that I just expect a defeat every time we play at home. When we've played United at home I always think 'maybe this time', however tonight I don't have one ounce of faith. Please don't confuse me with someone who doesn't care, becaus e I do...and will be right behind the lads from the first kick as I am every week.
Let's hope I'm proved wrong eh?

It's odd, in the sense that this has all the hallmarks of just another fixture to fulfill. Take our beating and move on.
But this could be a pivotal game, for Lambert and for our season.
Win this tonight, and I can't see us going down. We'd be on 26 points, and 14 points from 17 shouldn't be beyond us -even if we do have a 'mare of a run at some stage between now and the end of the season.
However lose tonight (particularly if it's a beating) and lose at Anfield at the weekend and we'll be back around the dead men at the foot of the table.
Lambert won't get jettisoned for defeats against either of those sides, but losing at home to the Olbiyun or West Ham on top of that could do for him. They might be the games that we'd expect to target three points, but a side that can lose to Crystal Palace at home can lose to anyone.
-
I heard (not sure if correctly) that should Benteke not score tonight it will be the longest number of games one of our strikers has gone without scoring.
He's due a goal or 2, please let it be tonight.
-
2-2 Benteke Gabby
UTV
-
1-7 with Drake getting all seven - or 1-5 with Woodcock getting four ... fill in the latest Arsenal striker to get an easy ride at VP
-
I'd go with five at the back or five in midfield for this one if possible and try and catch them on the break. I know we're at home and we shouldn't be doing that but it's how we play best.
-
1-1.
I'm a fool.
-
Definite 4-5-1 Albrighton and Gabby will have to graft. This could be the night Benteke wants to "really" put in a performance. He will want to keep on the radar, Its gonna be a battering or a massive turn around .....
-

I disagree , how we play best away is 433 with counter attacking football- this will be similar to an away game with arsenal coming onto us and our best hope is to hit them on the counter - packing the defence or midfield will just increase the likelihood of hoofing it up to our isolated striker - and arsenal will break us down .
I fear an early goal for them and we could see a heavy defeat tonight - but we might as well have a go at them rather than sit back and hope to contain them.
We need our attackers width to try and counter attack - if we had a decent midfield then 5 men would be an option but we have a midfield who lack pace and quality .
-
If Vlaar plays we get a result, trust.
-
I think it'll be like last season's Man City game - we'll be surprisingly okay, then one of our defenders will do something boneheaded and they'll win 1-0.
-
Anything from tonight or Saturday will be a bonus really - I hope that we don't get hammered in both though as that could be a real confidence shaker as we saw against Chelsea and spurs last winter .
Very important not to concede early tonight as a rampant arsenal could put us to the sword - will be interesting to see how we go about our task tonight.
-
It is such an obvious away banker that I have a totally irrational feeling of optimism about this one. Sod it, 2-1 Villa.
-

We have played five at the back away from home before though, Southampton to name but one. I think we played five at the back against Man City as well. It can work and it dose'nt have to be too negative. They're a good side. Play 4-3-3 against these and we could struggle. Let's make it hard for them.
-
First game at VP for a while for me tonight and I'm taking an Aussie who's fulfilling a lifelong dream to get to VP and watch the Villa. I'm just hoping it doesn't turn out to be a nightmare!! And thanks to whoever's seats we got off Viagogo, couple rows back from the front of the upper Holte right in the middle for £23. Bargain.

Maybe clampy, but at least i hope we have a go and show something positive for the fans - whatever formation we use it will be a tough ask , but lets hope we can take some positives from the game .
I just fear if we go one up front and concede early then we will really struggle - I'm hoping we don't resort to hoofing it long.

1-7 with Drake getting all seven - or 1-5 with Woodcock getting four ... fill in the latest Arsenal striker to get an easy ride at VP
Or even 2-6 with Woodcock getting five - Oct '83. My late father was at the Drake game, and we were both at the latter.

I know it's hard to be anything but pessimistic after recent home performances. Man U, Man C, Everton, Liverpool, Spuds, Chelsea, Saints and Arsenal all had games you would expect them to win this weekend but League is such that normally there is a shock. Well the wasn't with 7 out of 8 so I am pinning my hopes on us providing it.

I'd go with 5 at the back, 5 in the middle, 2 up front and see how long we can get away with playing 12 players. You never know

Then we'd actually be playing with 13 players, Chico. Unless you plan on no keeper for this one....

Villa to win 1-0 is a pretty astonishing 16/1.

Is there any point in sacking him at all? Who would we get it would be a gamble on someon? Whoever it is they won't get any cash.
I really think we need to stick with Lambert for the long term.
