Title: Sunderland v Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread
Post by: pauliewalnuts on December 30, 2013, 06:52:41 PM
Wednesday January 1st, 3.00pm, Stadium of Light.

Opened on request.

Am unsure as to what superstitious risks I am taking in Legion not doing this.

Legion told me he didn't want to do it as he's an unlucky omen
2-0 sunderland win .

@MatKendrick: Ron Vlaar has resumed training, but not with the rest of the #avfc squad. He has an outside chance of playing at Sunderland

@MatKendrick: Christian Benteke trained this morning and has a chance of playing for #avfc at Sunderland

If Vlaar only has an outside chance, and therefore doesn't make it, I can't see us conceding fewer than two goals. A back four of Bacuna Lowton Baker and Luna sounds appalling.

Can we get the two or more goals needed for a result? Not convinced.

If Vlaar does make it I think we can win.

If Vlaar plays 1-1.

If not can see us losing this, maybe 3-2 defeat.

It's time to tie on the hachimaki headband, open the throttle and nosedive out of the sun at the flaming deck of the USS Sunderland.

If Benteke and Vlaar return and are actually somewhere near being fit then we can do 'em. Otherwise, more disappointment and head scratching, and a slim hope that RL will supply some meaningful money.

A 2-2 draw, probably enough to confirm the rot duly stopped but not enough to dispel the worries overall.

Agbolahor and Clark for us.

Can't see Vlaar or Benteke involved in this one - too soon?
Fingers crossed, but if they've been "rested" & treated for injuries, no point in rushing them back so that they can struggle with match fitness.
Couldn't fault the lads against Swansea; we go again. :-(

I watched a team last saturday who looked liked they had just met each other the week before for the first time and then had a 48 hour train ride to get to Villa Park and arrived 5 mins before kick off....
Every team has Villa sussed out by now....we can only counter attack, the problem is getting the ball to counter attack.

Luna will think he's in the North Pole when he lands on Wearside on Wednesday....Sunderland win

I'd forgotten about the snood phenomenon: did they get banned or just go out of fashion?

I think PL should enforce a short sleeve/wooly mitten/tights combo for this one and we may score a couple of early goals while they are ROFL.

I have a horrible feeling that's Weimann's "assist" on Saturday will keep him in the side, although I wholeheartedly agree that he should be dropped. I don't even think it's a lack of form with him, I genuinely don't think he has the ability or composure to be a top-class footballer and unlike someone like like Gabby, he doesn't have the athleticism or physique to compensate.

Without Benteke in some sort of form, we'll struggle to score, and if there's no Vlaar we might be weak at the back with Clark out as well, so I'm going for an optimistic 1-1, Kozak to score ours and Luna to score theirs.

Quite fearful about this one, and the next 5 games tbh.Sland look to have turned a corner under Poyet, and should have beat us.The Korean guy is far better than any midfielder we have, and with Clark out, i'm quite fearful tbh.

As i have lost confidence in PL, a defeat would'nt worry me too much as i think it might be the only way we stay up.

Hope our new loanee LB will be replacing our extremelly poor other loanee LB.

Would like us to win, we desperately need the points, just don't see it myself.

I'll be there with my nephew, behind the goal opposite the away end. Giv uz a wave if ya see uz!  ;D

Good luck and safe travel to all making the long trip, hope you enjoy your day in the North East, but not too much!  ;)

They are keeping a few clean sheets lately. 0-0 draw and Lambert celebrating like we've won the cup.

They're unbeaten in five and especially looking good at home

Not at all optimistic

Just win Villa, enough of these dire displays

It'll be interesting to see what Lambert comes up with bearing in mind we're short on numbers in the centre half dept. Last time he played with a depleted defence at Fulham, he went three up front and he didn't need to. We're not the greatest at keeping possession so I'd either go five at the back or four in midfield.

He's said he wouldn't play a midfielder at centre back. Given donacien hasn't been on the bench I imagine it'll be Lowton and baker if vlaar is out. I'm not sure we could play 352 as I don't know which three would play?

Got to go 4-2-3-1 if Vlaar is out and he won't risk Donacien. LB, MK, NB, AL with Sylla & Westwood 'sitting' in front of back four/patrolling centre circle. Albrighton Delph, Agbonlahor, ahead of them. Kozak or Benteke at CF.

I wouldnt think either Vlaar or Benteke are properly fit. I wouldnt play either. As you said Baker and Lowton with Bacuna at right back. Is Fletcher playing today?

Donacien- there's always a first time.

Hats off to anyone heading up there today. The weather in the Mids is absolutely atrocious.

Yes it is. The weather up there is a big factor too. If it is as bad as down here it will not be a good idea for Guzan to hoof it towards Kozak/Benteke as the ball might do a swift u turn and head towards our goal!

Keep it on the ground.

I can't see anything but a 3-0 defeat here. Sunderland unbeaten in four and looking more solid. By the end of the day we'll be sucked into the relegation mire.

A 2-2 draw, probably enough to confirm the rot duly stopped but not enough to dispel the worries overall.

Agbolahor and Clark for us.

Ah, just seen that Clark is suspended for this one! Agbolahor and Benteke, then....

Baker as our only recognised CH?
Sounds bad. We may have to rush Vlaar back regardless of whether he's 100%.

Without stating the obvious we could really do with the 3 points today.

Baker is a recognised CH? Bold statement.

We should play Steve Sims and Allan Evans

We really need 3 points today to put a bit of space between us and the relegation zone and give us a bit of a lift. If we can do that, get a couple of players in as soon as possible, and get players back from injury, it could be the turning point of our season.

Alas, i think the best we will manage is a draw, and as i don't think we'll keep a clean sheet, i'll go for 1-1 and a massive 33% possession.

Great to see.
Strongest line up we could have hoped for. No excuses. Let's start the new year with three much needed points.

1-3 Villa

Excellent news. Just a shame we've got to contend with Fletcher rather than that donkey Altidore. Sunderland fans are annoyed that Ji is starting. Let's hope he's as crap as they seem to think.
