Looks like a 4-2-3-1.
Tonev and Alby on each wing, Weimann playing off Kozak?
I'd have gone for that to be honest. Two direct wingers against their poor fullbacks. Andy's work rate is better used in the middle to help break up their midfield, and also allowing him to play off Kozak. His best game this season came against City, playing off Kozak.

I don't think that's actually a bad side to be honest. It looks direct, and hopefully with some width. Of course Lambert will do something silly like play Weimann wide and Tonev in the middle, just to fuck things up.

KEA out is a bonus. He disappears for most of the games. The odd goal here and there can't make up for that. We're best just having a two man, with Weimann dropping back to help out every now and again. I honestly think Lambo has taken a leaf out of Utds book after last week.

We need Weimann to find some form today - chances here for a few to impress and stake a claim - lets hope they take their chance.

well I was happy to see kEA and Luna out at first .

maybe hes got to play weimann with CB and Gabby out but hes been really poor .   Looks poor side , so we will probably win 3-0

Honestly the way we're playing at the minute, I'd rather have Weimann in there for his work rate alone. I think we'll see a different player though, if he's allowed to play through the middle, which hopefully today he will.

On paper this side looks week, but what I do think it's got, is some balance. Two direct wingers, 2 in the middles, with Weimann operating behind Kozak.
The defence could be a worry, but honestly, as average as our side might look, I don't think Stoke looks any better. In fact their side looks shite.

I fancy a win today.

Apparently he's been carrying knocks. Which would certainly tie in to how short of pace he's looked since coming back from injuries. He's looked 2 yards short of last season and hasn't really shown the willingness to really run at defenders. He's definitely been holding back.

I'm not worried that kea and Luna  are on the bench - both poor recently - nice to see Lowton back again at right back but thought bacuna may play rather than tonev - I think Kozak will score today but am worried about our defence against crouch . Hard game to predict this one - anything could happen - fingers crossed it goes our way .

Anyway, happy enough with the line up. Time for Tonev & Albrighton to step up.

Got a funny feeling this might work. Two wingers, tall, target front man and an industrious Weimann in the hole at least gives us a different attacking thread.

I'm just worried about Guzan.........who's he going to launch it at if Benteke is out?!  ;)

Get at them early with a high temp and go for it. Change 2 after 60 mins and go again (sorry).

3-1  ;D

Not too bad so far. There's a bit of balance to the side with this system. A bit of composure and and consideration we should be able to open them up.
Defensively we've been okay, though Lowton got skinned far too easily at one point.

Kozak and Weimann are working hard. Linked up at the end there, but Weimann lashed at it.
I'd like to see Westwood commanding the game a bit more. He's got to be the one starting things off and making things happen but his passing has been under par at times. Likewise Delph needs to keep his passing simple, because it's not his strength.

Tonev is disappointing. He's got no composure at all. It's full pelt or nothing. No touch the boy. But if we get him in behind he will cause problems.

Alby has looked lively.

Tight game, could go either way. Not nearly as horrendous as we might have expected. Stoke are a hard side to beat on their turf, but I think we could see Kozak getting some joy if Alby can whip in a few more balls.

Credit to Baker and Herd in the middle too. They've done well so far. It's hardly an ideal pairing, but so far they've kept Crouch and their no 10 pretty quiet.

He can play either side apparently. I think cutting in from the left he has a good striker on him, so I'd like to see Leandro come on at some point. I'd give Tonev 10 more minutes though. He could have some joy.

Not really. I think most people are pointing out he's had a particularly bad half - which is hard to argue against if you've watched the match.

Title: Re: Stoke City v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: paul_e on December 21, 2013, 03:58:14 PM
Albrighton has done well, the ball in for Kozak at about 10minutes was close to a perfect cross, just a shame Kozak had gone a bit too early.  The defence looks better than expected and Weimann has looked sharp.  Delph has struggled to find Tonev a few times which is a bit frustrating as he's a better player than that.  I have no idea what to say about Tonev, I really don't think he's as poor as he looks but absolutely nothing is going for him again today.  I still think he's going to be one of those players where there will be a definitive turning point and it will all just click.

Wilson is very lucky to be on the pitch, could easily have been a red and even without it he was lucky not to have been on a yellow anyway for the push on Albrighton earlier.

Stoke are still a right bunch of thugs, lots of niggly crap off the ball and blocking off of runs, then when anyone reacts they throw themselves to the floor and appeal for anything they can get.

in a game with two poor sides, we look slightly better. Stoke rallied a bit before the break but some great defending from Clark and Baker kept them out. Expecting a lot more from Delph and Westwood in midfield.

This game is eminently winnable.

Sadly yes. Genuinely there's probably 6 players in our squad I'd rate as good enough long term. The rest are bobbins. I mean even in early matches you should be able to see some ability, or some potential, like we saw when Ash Young arrived, or Barry for example.
So many of these look utterly poor.

Still a few results going our way today, but, at this rate we'll be in the bottom 3 by the end of the Arsenal game on Monday 13th Jan I reckon.

I think you're right. Results have gone for us today as all our rivals for relegation with the obvious exception of Stoke are losing or drawing

I think our fundamental problem is that we have far too many players who aren't good enough

Wrong. Our problem is not the players. It's the clueless fool that manages them. He really is out of his depth and is being found out every week.

Is this really us in transition? I'm sorry but lambert has bought volume over substance! Lack of
Quality is shocking.
At present I can't see us beating anyone and that is
Very very worrying

As much as Lambert has to be accountable for some of what we are seeing it must be shit to as picks the team that Vlaar, Benteke, Okore, Gabby, N'Zogbia etc are all out injured

Put those 5 into the side and we are very different, but the back up to those he has bought have been really poor so far.

Yep and throw in players like Westwood, Weimann, Lowton who have all regressed and it's a very difficult situation right now
I do wonder sometimes with those mentioned, whether they had another level or not. They may just have been found out. Certainly I really don't see the fuss with Weimann.
It's a shame Delfouneso didn't have Weimanns application and workrate.

I don't think we've been great but Stoke are the same bunch of classless, cheating thugs that they always have been. We should be getting a point out of this at the least but I can't see it
We have been rubbish in the final third and have been for a while.

That's the worry and it's a valid concern as well. This era of buying out of their depth lower league players and cheap foreigners is dicing with our Premier League status. It really isn't good enough for Villa. Lerner has to decide to either invest serious money into the club or find someone who will.

Stoke 2-1 Aston Villa
Stoke are dominant now and Aston Villa do not seem to have any answer, they certainly don't look like drawing level for a second time

The two home games over Christmas are so significant now.4 plus points, and we'll be clear of the rabble.Anything less, and as Jon says,we'll be in the mix.

There's far too many on that pitch, whom are not of the standard for a mid table team.Nothing against the man, biut Bowery seems to be a Brewster's Millions experience on the part of PL

Someone earlier commented that this side was as bad as those seen under Graham Turner - Am beginning to think that is a bit of a sleight against Turner - This is one "car crash" or abortion of a line up.
I salute the optimists who post on here but are we really any better than last season?
McLeish and Lambert - is there really any difference?

I have always thought that the time to bring in players like Westwood or Lowton is when the current first team squad is a lot more solid and reliable. The fact is they have been brought in to play and not be given sufficient time to develop. They played above themselves last season. Maybe part of that was excitement of PL football and the opportunity, but also a bit of momentum towards the end as we got better. Now with the club struggling they don't have the required quality to get us out of this little run of poor performances and results. That's where a bit of experience would really help.

Is just plain old cost cutting dressed up as a "project". This is the 4th season on the trot where we've been basically shit. This hasn't happened for decades at Villa. Ellis would have been hung drawn and quartered by now if he was still in charge yet not a word of anger is ever aimed at Lerner.

To think there's still people on these forums who support Lerner; he's to blame for trying to do it on the cheap! There's no substitute for quality and that costs money. Three straight defeats now - another nightmare December!

If Paul Lambert is not embarrassed at the sackings of Clarke, Vilas Boas, Jol and potentially Mackay while he is only allowed to remain he has no shame.  He stays because Lerner has no ambition, no money and frankly it feels no respect for the fans - bright future?

Yes, Ellis would've been hammered by now after 4 shit seasons; yet people still support Lerner who can't be arsed to watch a match over here - let alone actually talk to the paying customers. How can anyone support him after the McLeish appointment alone?
