No idea (as always). Wouldnt surprise me if Fulham saw this as their big opportunity. Lambert will adjust his formation because of Vlaars injury.

Fulhams new manager seems to like a wide 4-4-2 so I expect Lambert to somehow double up on those wingers, maybe a 4-5-1 or deep 4-3-3 kind of formation? Or he could just copy what AVB did which was almost 4-2-4 and pin them back.

Ok I have no idea :)

I would be amazed if he was back in. It didnt look like a small knock you can recover from in less than a week.

I quite fancy us to win this one. Good performance or not!

Can't see vlaar being fit though and that is a blow. I think lambert may maintain a 532 as a result. That probably means Lowton or shock horror herd at centre back, and three defensive midfielders.

Can see benteke being on the bench and coming on to score.

Well Berbatov probably wont be selected and Darren Bent cant play in this one so we might as well sling five in the middle and counter attack at speed. Gabby is very suited to this style of play. If Ron Vlaar is fit 0-2 to us. If he's not fit could be a 1-1.

Sunday 8.12.13 1.30pm KO Craven Cottage

0-4 away win

Kozak 4, 16, 33, 69

Good to see the optimism back!!
Having shown I'm not the new Legion with the effect of my non-attendance at the Sunderland game, I shall be working my result-guaranteed magic on this one by being there. Once more, the footballing world will be left scratching its head at how a team which sees so little of the ball can clinically bag another three points on its travels. Us to win by at least three, Gabby to set the ball rolling five minutes before half-time, then, when they come out to play, Kozak to twist the knife, CB to pour salt on, and another screamer from an unexpected source to rub it in, long-overdue comedy own goal for them. Cor wait!

Tricky one this. Nailed on Villa win until last Monday, but now they have a new manager's first home game and will be very fired up indeed. We should keep it tight for 45 while Lambo susses out their tactics. Therefore, we will probably be 0-3 down by half time.

We should win but we've underwhelmed the last few years at the cottage which always seems to be a winnable away ground. I went last year which was a terrible excuse of a football match. Nice place though.

The worry I have is Fulham won't keep on losing for eternity and they really should've got something against Spurs.

Vlaar out is a blow so I'll go 2-2.

excellent news everyone. The Useless One has us down to lose this weekend. Jim Kerr of Simple Minds has us down to win. I know who's expert opinion I'm going with

Quote
Fulham v Aston Villa (13:30 GMT)
Performance-wise, Fulham were very good despite losing at home to Tottenham on Wednesday.

It might sound hard to believe but Dimitar Berbatov was running around. Maybe he is playing for a January move - who knows?

Dimitar Berbatov has scored one Premier League goal this season, against Crystal Palace in October

The Cottagers did not really do a lot wrong against Spurs but they could not get the second goal they needed and, once Tottenham equalised, there only really looked like being one winner.

But if Fulham play like that again against Aston Villa, I can see them getting the three points. Villa are very good on their travels, as we saw against Southampton, but I do not see them winning two on the spin away from home.

Lawro's prediction: 2-1

Jim's prediction: "I like Fulham and I love going to Craven Cottage. But I like Villa boss Paul Lambert more and I think he is going to get a 2-1 win."

yes Lawro, because could it be possible the team with the second best away record in the league win two consecutive games away from home?

It probably is but then again from memory Baker had two really good games against Berba last season.

Worth noting Hangeland is still out for them I think so I'd fancy any of our strikers against Senderos and Hughes or Ambroeaitwhatshisface.

I haven't seen us win at Fulham yet so this will be it.  We will win 1 - 0.  Guzan/Sylla or Bowery to score to continue the breaking of the Premier duck theme.

I actually think not playing Berbatov and Bent could be a blessing in disguise for Fulham potentially. They could do with a bit more work up front.
I think we'll get at least a point but I do fancy us to win this if Vlaar plays. I can't see them creating too much or scoring. We're going strongly at the moment and they don't look like a side with much confidence at the moment, so I can't see them winning.

Need to wait and see if Vlaar's fit. Lowton looked very ropey at CB and I thought he should have conceded a penalty as well as being at fault for the first. Baker and Clark as a pair isn't inspiring confidence either.

I'm not sure what he'll do to be honest. Maybe Chris herd in there? (Shudders)

I suspect it'd be Lowton in a three.

I don't think we'll go 5 at the back against Fulham. I'd also bring Lowton in at right back. Bacuna has been poor recently so I'd either drop him or put him further up the pitch.

I think our ability to catch teams on the break could play a part in this one again. They've got Aaron Hughes, John Arne Riise and Scott Parker all in their 30's and Senderos is not the quickest either. Throw in an unhappy Berbatov and Bent not being eligible, it's a game we should get three points from.

He played Bacuna left back against West Ham so he might do that again, which would leave Clark and Baker as the two centre halves and Lowton in his normal spot. However,  if Lambert wanted to stick with five at the back, he could always bring Donacien in. There's also Enda Stevens he could call back I suppose.

Defensive injury problems highlight the need for a signing or two in the January window. Okore's injury was the biggest blow of all. PL might have to bring a loan player in, although he doesn't seem to favour loan-deals.

What's the situation with Vlaar.

All they have said so far is it is very sore and he is very doubtful for Sunday. But it is obviously a worry that it is a calf injury and he missed two months last season with one.

Bacuna Lowton Baker Clark as a back 4? Ouch. Or Bacuna at left wing back like v West Ham, Lowton on the right and Herd at centre back with Clark and Baker?  Worked against Liverpool last season, but not Chelsea etc.

Defensively I would say Enda is slightly less of a worry than Luna and Bennett. He's just not very good going forward, or as quick as the other two.

If vlaar is out as well as Luna id be very surprised if he didn't go with a back five

I initially assumed that would mean Lowton and bacuna as wingbacks. And it's hard to see us being particularly progressive with that line up

But as per above, perhaps he could play Delph there again as against west brom.

Think it will have to be another battling performance here. I can't conceive of a lineup that gives me much confidence if vlaar is out.

Draw. Fulham are due a good performance sooner or later and we are on a good run of results without looking too convincing. But if we were to win with a scrappy 1-0 deflected goal and 10% possession i'm okay with that!

Back three of Lowton Clark and Baker; Bacuna and Delph as wingbacks; MF of Westie, Sylla and Karim; front runners of Gabby and Benteke.
Potentially a decent side as long as the defenders are not expected do anything (particularly in the air, anywhere near Clark).

Delph, Bacuna and Gabby to score; no idea how many we'll concede though.

I reckon he'll go: Guzan - bacuna Lowton baker clark Delph - KEA Westwood sylla - gabby benteke

Personally I'd replace sylla with Weimann to play behind the front two like he did v west brom. But if go 433 if vlaar is fit

Set up to play on the break again. Just hope we can hold out enough at the back. Berbatov can exploit poor positioning and baker and Lowton have got plenty of scope for that.

Yeah, he didnt even dignify them with the usual "aye, tough, tough game it will be" which he trots out every week.

He just dismissed them as the same team that has been losing regardless of manager. I guess I should be happy he is so confident?

extra day should help us a bit, think we would be really struggling to go again today

with vlaar and luna out our options at the back are worrying. I wouldnt be against bringing Hutton in from the cold but cant see Lambert doing that. Without Vlaar and Okore, Lambert is almost certainly going to go with three centre backs. I think that is overkill as Fulham are only likely to play with Berbatov up top and he will drop deep.
Lowton was atrocious when he came in at Southampton there, Herd when he last played there was poor too. Also looks like moving Delph is our only option on the left, dont like moving our best midfielder but the only other options seems to be Bacuna who was terrible there on the left v West Ham.

I suspect Lambert will give Kozak another start ahead of Benteke. Id prefer to bring Benteke back in but no harm to have him for 2 games riding the pine.

Will say the team will be

Guzan
Lowton, Herd, Clark, Baker, Delph
------Kea, Westwood, Bacuna/Sylla
---- Gabby, Kozak

Id prefer
------------Guzan
Lowton, Herd, Baker, Clark
Bacuna, Westwood, Delph, Albrighton
---------Gabby, Benteke--------------

It is quite a difficult call. Either Lowton or Herd at centre back, alongside Clark and Baker, doesn't inspire much confidence.

I think there's at least an argument for saying that whatever we do, we'll look weak at the back. So why not accept it, play four back there, and try and exploit their defensive weaknesses. Play 4231. But I don't think he'll do that.

So I think he'll plump for Lowton and tell him to pull his finger out. Strength in numbers and all that.

It'd be better to have Delph in midfield  than wing back. I can't really see Tonev as a wingback, or Albrighton. But who knows  . .

Sylla at centre back?
I think we'll go with a back 4 this time to be honest, so no need for square pegs in round holes. Fulham are really struggling in attack at the moment so I'd be comfortable-ish with Baker and Clark in the middle. I actually think playing a third CB would just confuse matters too much and make it even harder to organise.

I think he'll go

Lowton - Clark - Baker - Bacuna

at the back.  That way the only player who is playing out of position is Bacuna, and he's played there once or twice before anyway.

Expect to see Donacien on the bench
Title: Re: Fulham v Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread

We need Delph in midfield, any convoluted defence where we shoe horn 2 players into unfamiliar positions will get torn an arsehole by anyone, including Fulham.

4 4 fucking 2 as Mike Bassett would say.
Title: Re: Fulham v Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Clampy on December 07, 2013, 11:51:52 AM
It is likely that Fulham will play Berbatov up front on his own which our defence should hopefully handle easily enough, but then we've got to make sure we're not overrun in midfield so it'll be interesting to see what he does. I've a got a feeling Vlaar will be fit anyway.

Guzan
Lowton, Donacien, Clark, Baker

That's the team I'd play if Vlaar and Luna are out.

It does mean Clark playing right sided centre back though.

But I agree, there's a risk we have too many square pegs in round holes, and it doesn't work defensively or offensively. If we had our front three all firing on all cylinders, I'd go with the four. But I just think that all our success this season has been built on much improved defensive stability.

Of course, if Vlaar's fit it's easy for me. Back four with Baker at left back (though he may play Clark there). But Lambert didn't sound particularly confident of that in the presser.

I'm not sure. I think that's a 0-0 side to be honest. I'd be tempted to play Lowton and Bacuna as fullbacks so we can at least attack on both sides from FB. I'd also put Tonev, Weimann or Albrighton in for Sylla and go 3 up. They're really poor at fullback so I'd like to be attacking them wide too. Whipping some good crosses into Kozak.

We should be having a go at Fulham's back 4 really, Hangeland remains out, think they have doubts over Ponderous and Ambroiwhatshisfave aswell so they're struggling at centre half more than we are and even when they're all fit they still concede goals.

Get Weimann back in and Gabby alongside either Kozak or Benteke, I'll trust Lambert on whichever call he makes.

You can still have the 3 defensive midfielders behind to help out what will probably be our own makeshift back 4.

Have a feeling this will be 2-2 and very open.

Great for Gardner, and if Lambert can get Delph into the player he has, he could do the same with Gardner.

I bloody hope not. I'd like to see Donacien brought in at centre half, push Baker out to left back, Clark has done enough to show he's matured sufficiently to lead our central defence in the absence of Vlaar.

You're dreaming if you think for one minute Lambert is going to play Sylla in his natual position as a defensive midfielder, as you are if you think he'll go with only two strikers. He's still very much gung-ho so there's no way Benteke won't be playing, especially against a weak defence. If Weimann is fit he'll play, the front three will be his preferred choice. Midfield will be interesting, will he continue with KEA or replace him with Sylla? My guess is he'll go with KEA though I think Sylla is the better option.

Three points tomorrow will be massive, even against a very poor but slightly improving Fulham. We'll probably get outplayed as usual and continue to rely on Plan A of counter attacking. A draw would be the obvious prediction but I'm hoping there's a bit of confidence in the squad and Benteke will take advantage.

Heart says 3-1 Villa, head says 1-1.

I think Weimann has been garbage aswell but just think the same as v Southampton would be too negative given Fulham's lowly status and poorer defence.

Albrighton's been out of the premier league so long, tough to chuck him in and expecting a great performance.

Could be Gabby and Benteke through the middle with weimann out wide. Harsh on Kozak though.

I've collated all the available statistics and managed to work out that when we win today we will go level on points with Man Utd after 15 games. That's the first time we've been in that position since the famous 1940/41 season when the prototype round football was introduced.

Providing we are insisting on continuing with the 10 outfield player format this should do it -

Guzan
Lowton Baker Clark
Bacuna El Ahmedi Westwood Delph Albrighton
Gabby Benteke

I've collated all the available statistics and managed to work out that when we win today we will go level on points with Man Utd after 15 games. That's the first time we've been in that position since the famous 1940/41 season when the prototype round football was introduced.

Providing we are insisting on continuing with the 10 outfield player format this should do it -

Guzan
Lowton Baker Clark
Bacuna El Ahmedi Westwood Delph Albrighton
Gabby Benteke

1998/1999?

Expect Benteke and Weimann to start. Weimann especially will have so much fun on Fulhams left side thats so weak defensively.
They have been using Richardson as a left defender, though he more of a midfielder. Riise might start today though but he doesnt have a chance against the pace of Weimann.
Hope Bacuna plays right defender though as Lowton will have problems with Kacaniklic or Ruiz.

Villa 4-2 win ?

Tayls, do you ever sleep ? ;) Villa win, easy.

No mate, I'm tired and I've forgotten my medication. Come on the Villa boys! On a serious note, another win and that is pretty much our relegation fears over and we can start looking forward again.

Id prefer to play Bacuna left back and Lowton right back as Lowton looked dodgy in Central defence against Swansea.

Not ideal either really but we don't have many options.

Would it be too much to ask to be level on points with Man Ure before next weekend?

I really don't see how you can drop Kozak. He deserves to keep the shirt .

I half-heartedly looked on the Canal+ Sport France website just in case. Well, they are indeed showing it live.

This welcome news inspires me to predict a 2-5 win with the preantepenultimate goal coming from a corner.
