That's quite an achievement, though how he got to rise from the Third Division to manage a club that had been Champions of Europe only two years before I'll never know.
-
Dad always said he was arrogant & unfit to manage Villa
You may remember he always had Boss or GT boss on his track suit
Being a naive teenager I supported Turner as I supported Villa, but as usual, Dad was right !

1) Doug.
2) He was cheap.

He should never have been appointed but he wasn't arrogant. Nice guy who admits he was out of his depth.

He had to rebuild a great team and wasn't able to do it. There were mitigating factors: HDE being the main one. It might be damning with faint praise, but he can perhaps take some consolation from his time at Villa from the fact that his successor was even worse...

He was given the freedom of Hereford a few years back.
Good job he wasn't a big success. Imagine the traffic jams if we had to let him freely herd sheep and cattle everywhere.

Remember his first game at home to Coventry mainly for the fact took the missus to her first game and she wondered why Coventry had two mascots, I informed her that Terry Gibson was actually a player. Other thing I remember about the game was Sir Dennis playing left midfield

One of my few memories of Turner being quoted was in the Argus. He said that too many players were resting on their laurels and loved the life of a footballer but for them Saturday afternoon wasn't the highlight of the week, but a time they approached with trepidation. I am paraphrasing after all these years obviously.
Funnily enough, Pete Davies said something similar about professional players a few years later in his brilliant book All Played Out.

He wasn't arrogant. If anything the problem was he was too much the other way. He came across as nervous and lacking belief. I always thought he was appointed because he would be too grateful for the job to go against Doug's plan to break up the early eighties side.

Maybe Boss on all his clothing was to remind him he was manager then
It's a long time ago now, but I reckon he was a yes man for Doug

Maybe he liked German clothes.
