I would have gone 3-5-2 without benteke in the side today , but lets hope we perform and win.

We've done alright without him, and although I'm less optimistic now, its not going to do anybody any good to rush him back in when he isn't fully fit.

All confusing unless Clark has pulled out late leaving baker to play and benteke to join bench ?
Was announced as Clark starting and no benteke in 18 20 minutes ago by Woodward and kendrick.

Lowton is the one who came onto the bench late to replace Clark, who has clearly withdrawn when he arrived, I'd guess a virus.

Herd and Bennett dropped from the bench that was announced to be replaced by Helenius and Benteke, which looks oddly like a clerical error.

We need Clark to be fit long term, because we can't afford to have Baker starting every week.

Official Dekko prediction:

Villa 2 goals down by the hour mark - Benteke to come off the bench and score a ten minute hatrick, including one where he steals the ball off Loris as he bounces the ball, one where heads it wide but it goes in through a hole in the netting, with the third awarded by a Phil Dowd clerical error.

Always think Sylla should start ahead of Westwood, who for me is too similar to El Ahmadi.

Come on villa, get into these immediately. They have very good movement up front, so Baker coming in does not bode well. He is too cumbersome. I hope the guys I just slated have a blinder!

Up the Villa!

Also, Weimann and Agbonlahor, especially Andi, need to do so much more, contribution-wise. Andi should play through the middle whilst Benteke is out, as is far more effective there. Kozak-I'm still unimpressed. Despite my moaning, I'm still looking forward to it. No sitting back Villa, please start strongly.

What a fiasco that teamsheet stuff was!

I presume Clark was a late injury. But Bentke, Lowton and Helenius all not originally on the bench either.

Clark out is a blow. Think the Baker / Luna side of the defence is weak - plenty of gaps to exploit. Good that Defoe isn't playing though. I reckon he'd have given Baker the runaround.

Tough, tough game this.

He needs games if he is to improve so it's not *that* bad.  After all people were saying the same about Clark last season and now we're saying he'll be missed.

Baker's poor positioning and lack of ability on the ball are a problem. Hopefully we'll get at them though and get a result.

Eriksen on the bench is just the type of classy number 10 we need. Spurs made all the fanfare about buying him, now he's on the bench. I hate Spurs, it's as if teams like them, Chelsea and Man City just buy players to stop other teams buying them!

Eriken's first choice for them I'm sure. It's just that he's played two international games and Spurs have a big squad.

Just heard interesting and distressing stats on the radio. Since we last finished above Spurs in 08-09:

- Spurs gross spend is c £300m. Net spend of £4m
- Villa gross spend of c £180m, net spend of about £60m I think.

That's obviously in part because Spurs also had a much better transfer policy going into that period, meaning they could sell bit part or indeed main players for  decent price, or even super profit. We've effectively written off the values of all bar about 5 players who played for us in the four years up to last summer.

Apparently Zlatan put on 15kg of muscle when he moved from Malmų to Ajax!

Problem is I still think we would be better off with Bacuna further forward.

Weimann never seems to be in truly threatening positions and Gabby when bang in form is unplayable, but goes cold for weeks on end. Unfortunately he is vital to counter attacking as he is the only fast one. We need wide options really badly.

I watched the first half without coming on to this thread, because it's non-stop moaning (me included normally)

I thought we played pretty well to be honest. Restricted their chances really. Created some decent-ish chances. Being let down a bit by Kozak.

Is there a more over-used word amongst football fans than passion? Everything's always down to a lack of passion. Or  not trying. Or being overpaid. As opposed to confidence, or form, or being intimidated, or just not being as good as your opponent. (Sorry for picking on you!)

We've worked hard, done okay. Weimann has played well. Delph's been good again. Westy looks more like his old self.

Baker worries me a little. KEA has been sloppy. His touch is pretty ropey to say the least and he's second best to every lose ball. I'd be tempted to bring Sylla on.

For me though, one big problem is that we've got a 6ft 4 CF in Kozak. I like him. He's working very hard indeed, but almost his entire service today has been long balls to his head. I don't recall him winning a single header. Dawson has won everything in the air. I want Kozak to succeed, just as I want Helenius to but it strikes me that we've bought two giant strikers, neither of which are actually that brilliant in the air?? If that's the case, fair enough, play the ball to their feet. But otherwise they're going to struggle. This isn't just today either. Kozak won something like 4 headers in 17 aerial duels against Hull. That's piss poor (particularly considering he was up against Curtis Davies, hardly a worldy). Play it to his feet. Play to his strengths or get him off the pitch.

Spurs have been below par. They're having most of the ball but they've not created that much besides the somewhat fortunate goal and Townsends shot at the end of the half.

I think Benteke could make the difference. I fancy us to score with CB on. Without him? I'm not sure. Kozak works hard but Dawson has him in his pocket.

Good. Something has to be done about the flairs nonsense at game. That it's still fairly common is ridiculous. They're dangerous, they're annoying, and in the hands of a complete an utter fucktard as evident today, can be used as projectile weapons.

But Delph doing very well again. Westwood and Weimann looking much better. Luna doing reasonably well.

Of course, it could very easily fall apart in the second half. They've got some pretty stunning quality on the bench. And Benteke apart, our bench options look pretty weak.

I'd rather see Benteke sooner rather than later. There's no point bringing him on when the game is already over. I think the more we huff and puff, the more Spurs will start picking us off, because we're gonna tire.

The game as it stands is salvageable but we need Benteke. I don't think Kozaks got enough about him to worry Spurs backline at the moment.

We are an extremely tedious football team to watch. I think we have potential, just don't seem confident in our ability. As i say this, both Delph and Bacuna have me up off my chair in excitement!

Look how many they have back, centrally when we attack. They spring out of that, and back into that shape at such speed it is excellent. We are just too open without the ball, and then too slow to get into an attacking formation.

The difference between decent players and top drawer ones. Which they have in every position practically.

2nd  goal killed it dead - will take the 0-2 at this point as spurs are all over us - very poor stuff.

Another home game where we have been overrun and created little - not really made lloris make a save :(

I will keep saying it, but Gabby and Weimann need better replacements. Look at Townsend, and the way he has run Luna down in this game. Ben Arfa for Newcastle. That type of player that will carry it and hurt teams has to be brought in or we will keep struggling.

Something is not quite right in the Lambert revolution if Vlaar is a regular starter and El Ahmedi and Baker even play for us at all. Bunch of frigging carthorses. Not that they're the only thing wrong today but just an observation. Another observation is that we've had a shit defence for over 3 years and it's not improving.

And that we've passed the ball better in the second half - at times at least - than we've done in most of our games this season?

Too many long balls though.

I think Weimann has been better today. Not great, but better. The one thing I won't accept is when people suggest he's getting too big for his boots, and not trying. Never in a million years.

haha. That has put a smile on my face. I can't fault our effort, we just lack 3-4 quality players.

Spurs have a squad we could only dream of, that's the reality. We desperately need investment, but there's no doubt we've improved on last year.

... its very hard to see at times!

But it is true. As said, statistically we have improved every single result so far this season.
Its dire to watch...you can't escape that fact.

Oh without a doubt it is fucking awful to watch at times. I accept that. But he needs 3-4 years before I write him off.

Neither am i writing him off but 15 months in charge is enough time to have addressed the issues i mentioned earlier. I'm not saying it's neccessarily enough time to have us challenging for european football or domestic cups, but there seems to be seem really obvious shit not being addressed. And the largely flat performances at home are not acceptable either, however much potential you think he has as a manager.
