I found this quite amusing, some not very happy fans on their forums.
http://ccfctv.co.uk/2013/10/15/coventry-telegraph-editor-responds-to-criticism-over-aston-villa-advert/
-
Well done the marketing department, and doubly well-done for getting a bit more publicity over the criticism.
-
Well that Cov fan did promise us that he'd be back
-
Quite frankly, fuck 'em if they don't like it.
It's way past time Villa leveraged their PL position to garner new fans from around the Midlands.
-
There has only ever been one club in the West Midlands anyway.
Coventry are at least the first to recognise this and have dutifully bowed out and relocated down to Northants.
Blues are doing their best to go bust, so its only a couple of Mickey Mouse clubs left to go.
-
I wonder if, back when they existed, Coventry ever advertised their games in Leamington or Nuneaton?
-
a) surely these clowns have bigger things to be concerned about, and
b) the advert is for hospitality, not to attract standard punters so if you're looking to do some corporate schmoozing you're hardly spoilt for choice in fuckin' Coventry are you?
-
If it gets more people down Villa Park I have no complaints.
Villa Park at capacity is bloody wonderful.
-
Floating Cov fans? A bit like the pellets in the bog which do not go down after the first flush?
-

They did in the Heartland Evening News/Nuneaton Evington Telegraph and the Atherstone Herald.
-
Well that Cov fan did promise us that he'd be back
He cleared off to live in Australia years ago and has written a book since emigrating there.
I was at a function at university of warwick recently and noticed villa had set up a stall near coventry city's offering discounted tickets for students to attract them to villa park - the cov fans around were moaning about it much to my amusement.
-
They can read AND write?
-
Pop up picture book.
-
What a fuss over nothing. It's not our fault that their club is a complete basket case.
-
Coventry City...the ultimate challenge on Football Manager 2014. Manage them without laughing. Not easy at all.
-
Some angry people here-

-
Great stuff by the Villa marketing department. In a way I'm surprised they're not being a bit more aggressive, maybe offering to swap Coventry season tickets for a few villa matches. In return they can have a few of our youngsters on loan.
-
Shouldn't the thread title read "...poaching felching Coventry City fans"?
-
I reckon we should hire a plane to tow a banner over their next home game at Kettering or wherever it is they play these days, offering them acceptance.

Most of them seem to be either unbothered or saying they don 't blame us. This pisses me off though, "Clubs tend to have an ethical unwritten agreement not to step on each others' turf." Football League clubs moan when Premier League clubs try to muscle in but when they do they same to non-league towns it doesn't matter.
-

I reckon they should go to Nuneaton and be done with it.
-
I like their comments on the "Villa in the bottom three" thread a bit further down.
-
Having written "“To those complaining about #avfc advert in @covtelegraph, it is illegal to refuse to carry adverts because of footballing preferences!” they then write "But should The Coventry Telegraph have run the advert, or should they have found a way to refuse?".
So, should they have complied with the law or broken the law would be a better way of wording it.
-
On that Cov forum, I found this post interesting, on the same thread:
AV also had a stand at freshers fair at Cov uni this year....im sure they see Coventry as a good opportunity to recruit some extra fans, as much as I dislike them I would do the same...
Good thinking, Villa.
And even better thinking revealed with this further down:
for those who say they will boycott the CET - are you going to do the same as far as the train station is concerned?? Big posters on the platforms advertising tickets for the same place and club, ( cant bring myself to type Villa ..........doh!!!)
-
I also thought it interesting that almost all of them on that thread referred to us correctly, ie with the definite article, "THE Villa".
It's interesting that, though they may pretend to hate us, their natural cap-doffing respect to their betters comes through.
-
If their Freshers fair was the same time as the one in Birmingham Villa were selling tickets for Manchester City. We'll have made a few fans for life that day.
-
This one made me laugh on the Villa in the bottom three thread
This is my first time so be gentle with me, villa are shite, for your man who said he'd lose a leg to be in their position he must be pissed. If all you want to do in life is make up the numbers then off you pop.
Must have missed all their title & CL challenges over the years.
-
Now that they play in Northampton, surely it would be unfair of them to advertise in Coventry and try to steal supporters off the city's premier club, Coventry Sphinx?
-

It was , university of warwick had a pitch too with offers for students for the man city game - nice work .
-
Bearing in mind how much they still seem to hate us, the majority of them didn't seem to have too much of a problem with it.

Should they also be able to keep the name?
Have to get advertising standards to look at that!
-
It seems like missionary work at its most positive to me
-
It's been such a long time since they played us that it's a bit like the English still hating the Romans...
-

I think not playing us for over a decade has decreased their hatred in some ways - now their rivals are Walsall.
-
Poach coventry fans? Not for me, I prefer them dipped in hot cooking fat
-

..."............and what have Villa ever done for us?...."
-
Hang on, on that Cov forum someone said there are no football clubs in Coventry.
I'm going to watch two on Saturday (Folly Lane v Coventry United) so that is plainly untrue.

Get yourself down the boro instead dave , they are playing Gateshead ;)
Coventry utd are this newly formed club backed by some money but I think most see sphinx as the main club in the city .
I remember one year coventry sporting had a good run to the fa cup main rounds too.
-

I'd rather stick pins in my eyes.

Ha ha , I expected you to respond like that ;)
Enjoy your trip to folly lane mate .

I went to Coventry Sporting with Tamworth in the 80's. They played in the athletics stadium on Kirby Corner Road.

That's right , just up the road from me - they beat tamworth 2-0 in an fa cup replay in 77 I believe , the club folded in 1989.

Despite this we only just managed 34k, makes it slightly more disappointing.

A question all football supporters could ask. 'What have the Villa ever done for us?"
-
How can we be accused of trying to poach fans in coventry? Villa have fans in Coventry
-
I went through Coventry last weekend. It may have been the tinted coach windows but it looked as grim a it always has been.
-
My preferred type of Cov fan.
Floating.

I thought they all did that as there was never any atmosphere at their ground.

Indeed they do and I've met a few. Ian Bell is from Coventry.

There are more than meet the eye - many of us are undercover ;)
I was talking to a local weatherman who has never mentioned football but when he gave me the wink I knew ;)

To be fair, saying it would have been illegal sounds like a load of old bollocks. I can't see the justification for a law which says a privately-produced publication can't control what is printed inside. To nick a (kind of) idea from Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, is he saying that if someone took out a double page advert for 'Arse-tickling Monster Dildos Limited' he'd been legally required to publish it? If so, I for one am up for sharing the cost!!!
-
Wouldnt't Arse Tickling Monster Dildos be a totally different thing, though, as in it's offensive for most people.
I took it as a joke on the editor's part, to be honest.
Anyway, fuck Coventry City. I feel vaguely sorry for some of their fans, but nothing like enough to give a shit about advertising on their patch. Hopefully we'll have snared a few.

Confused by why the Warwick Uni stand is an issue, or is the Uni actually in Coventry? If it isn't it's fair game for any local club.

Yes the university of warwick is actually located in coventry.
I will be heading there in a few minutes to pick the wife up from there.

An advert for upcoming home games is now at Coventry train station.Well done all.

And the new centro buses are claret & blue just to rub it in a bit more :)
-
There are often a good few Villa who get on the train at Coventry when I've been to games in London. Ugly, unwashed, tramps most of them, but Villa nonetheless. ;¬)
-
The majority of people from Coventry can't actually read anyway.

I have a mental picture of Mrs Hilda Slag scuttling around the platform with a Villa scarf tied around a shopping trolley packed with cat food.
-
I can see where they are coming from.
Imagine if Manchester United opened a club store in Birmingham city centre.

Because an ad in a paper a few miles away is exactly the same as that.
