Available Tuesday evening @6.45pm.
-
@MatKendrick: Villa: Steer, Lowton, Vlaar, Baker, Bennett, El Ahmadi, Bacuna, Albrighton, Sylla, Tonev, Kozak #avfc
-
@MatKendrick: Villa subs: Guzan, Clark, Helenius, Weimann, Bowery, Johnson, Robinson
-
@JackWoodwardAV: 7 changes. Only Vlaar, El Ahmadi, Bacuna, Tonev stay in. Kozak first start! #avfc #avtv
-
That is a desperately poor team, a lot worse than I expected.
-
That's about right for me given the number of injuries and limited chances we'll have to test players elsewhere.
-
I'm amazed Helenius isn't getting a start.
-
@MatKendrick: Tottenham: Friedel, Walker, Vertonghen, Chiriches, Paulinho, Lamela, Holtby, Defoe, Sandro, Fryers, Kane. #avfc
-
Albrighton rather than Helenius? Odd. Let's hope that he has a point to prove and takes some confidence from it.
-
@MatKendrick: Tottenham subs: Subs: Gomes, Soldado, Naughton, Townsend, Dembele, Dawson, Chadli. #avfc
-
Tottenham look a really big price at 21/20 (paddypower) now.
-
Spurs much stronger line up than i expected - fear this is asking too much of our starting line up to win this :(
-
Spurs side looks pretty good to me. I think we'll struggle badly, but come on Villa.
-
I'll be furious if we go out of the cup tonight.
-
It's effectively 8 changes from regular team. This is the sort of selection where I start questioning the Managers motives. Neglecting cups is not a good thing.
-
I suppose the 4-5-1 should make us more solid than usual, but struggling to see how we're going to create chances
-
I'll be furious if we go out of the cup tonight.
I'm hoping for another man city cup like display when we expected the worst and were pleasantly surprised.

I'm hoping for another man city cup like display when we expected the worst and were pleasantly pleased.
Problem is those sort of things happen once in a blue moon.
-
Right I'm off to watch the game - lets hope it goes our way - enjoy your evening all!
-

I'd have to agree with this. It's not as if we're on a full on assault for the top 4, and it's too early to be worrying about a relegation battle. It's a cup where the top 5-6 generally rest players and with a favorable draw we could have a decent run.
I'd be highly surprised if we go through tonight, looking at our team
-
We can concentrate on trying to finish 12th at least.
-
Villa 3rds versus Spurs 2nds. No idea what will happen. Injuries and poor home record and Bradford SF have seemingly combined to convince Lambo to focus on dodging the 4th successive relegation battle.
-
Erm... the players out are so through injury! And our first team would find that Spurs difficult!!
-
On the 7 to the ground and just seen the team. Disappointed but also realise we have a lot of players with niggles. We can't afford more long term injuries.
-
He could have at least put the best goalie in. A) because we're gonna need him and B) do goalies need a rest?
-
And I'm the only Villa on the bus. Match is tonight isn't it!
-
Formation tricky to predict. Is it
Steer
Lowton, Vlaar, Baker, Bennett
El Ahmadi, Sylla
Bacuna, Tonev, Albrighton
Kozak
-
4-3-3 with Tonev and Albrighton playing the Gabby and Weimann roles but probably slightly withdrawn from where they play I reckon.
-
He could have at least put the best goalie in. A) because we're gonna need him and B) do goalies need a rest?
Guzan has probably had to cover more ground than any of our outfield players over the last year or so!
-
More touches than any other villa player on sat!!
Would you really risk Gabby or Delph carrying knocks tonight??
-
I'll be furious if we go out of the cup tonight.
More so than normal? Is it a spurs thing? I can't stand them either.
-
Back in the days when Martin & Randy could do no wrong, our inevitable early rounds cup defeats were invariably followed by comments along the lines of "Cups don't matter" and "I'd rather get three points on Saturday." I bet nobody says that tonight.
-
To be fair though during those days we had an outside shot at CL qualification. That's not the case anymore. Bit disappointed with the team selection but maybe they'll prove us wrong!
-
More so than normal? Is it a spurs thing? I can't stand them either.
More so than normal yeah, I'd like us to give it our best shot this year after last year. Also I don't like London.
What's your reason?
-
If you look at Spurs side and then ours, even if you bear in mind the Bale money factor, they are now on an entirely different planet to us these days.
-
I've tried to praise spurs, I just can't.
-
World media shock at surprise centre back and playmaker selections! Baker & Tonev?!! Nope...Luiz & Mata.
-
More so than normal? Is it a spurs thing? I can't stand them either.
More so than normal yeah, I'd like us to give it our best shot this year after last year. Also I don't like London.
What's your reason?
I've got to be honest, I have an irrational hatred of spurs and because I think they'll win I'm going to try and pretend the match is not happening. Then I can shrug nonchalantly when I'm given grief by spurs fans tomorrow at work, pretending I don't care.
-
Brad should play. No excuses there.
It's on BBC 5 extra tonight. Come on the babbies.
-
Tonevs going to score a worldy....you heard it here first!
-
It doesn't make any sense that we're not starting Helenius.
-
More touches than any other villa player on sat!!
Would you really risk Gabby or Delph carrying knocks tonight??
If they are anywhere near fit, yes. I would have also started Guzan, Clark and probably Helenius.
-
Tonevs going to score a worldy....you heard it here first!
Can we have less of that Soccer AM nonsense please?
-
Whats's the crowd, looks about 10,000
-
Lambert's pretty much playing the team available to him.
I don't have a problem with Steer being given a run out; Lambert obviously rates him.
I'd love to see Helenius play but Lambert has obviously decided he wants 2 wingers and three combative players in the middle. I'm sure Helenius will get more game-time today than previously.
Baker is obviously getting some gametime after injury and Bennett is in (to public acclaim, based on the slating Luna has had on here recently).
As someone else has said, Spurrrrrrs are in a different class to us currently; they've spent x5 what we did over the summer.
-
It doesn't make any sense that we're not starting Helenius.
I can only assume that he doesn't want us to play a traditional 442 with him and Kovak (which I somewhat agree with). Whilst people say Helenius is good dropping deep, I'm not sure he's got the mobility to become an extra midfielder when we need to bulk up the numbers.
In fact from my very limited sightings his style reminds me of Teddy Sheringham. Useful at dropping deep to find space and make passes, but certainly not an extra midfielder from a defensive perspective.
-
Lambo and AVB look like good pals...you can just hear them now, having a good mumble to one another.
-
HA HA HA another shank from Tonev
-
Great block by Baker....Vlaar caught napping with the ball over the top as usual
-
I'm really startin to like KEA, shows a real enthusiasm for the game.
-
Deano on the radio. Great guy.
-
BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra digital or online commentary with Dean Saunders as pundit, in case you do not know.
-
Am I the only one watching it?
-
Slow going by both teams early on.
-
didn't think this would be on tv good though
-
Back in the days when Martin & Randy could do no wrong, our inevitable early rounds cup defeats were invariably followed by comments along the lines of "Cups don't matter" and "I'd rather get three points on Saturday." I bet nobody says that tonight.
But like when Houllier surrendered at Man City, what are we resting players for tonight. And did I imagine getting to Wembley twice?
-
Spurs dominant. Slow slow slow quick, trying to get Defoe behind our lumpen defence. Good test and education for our trainees against their internationals.
-
Nathan Baker's looking a bit good!
-
Am I the only one watching it?
I am here too, a few empty seats at VP.

They are well on top.
-
Good effort from Albrighton though.

Looks about 18,000 there
-
Sounds like Marc Albrighton had a good shot saved from Friedel. That's more like it Marc!
-
Good effort from Albrighton though.
He looks like he's put a bit of muscle on, that or a few pounds from sitting on the bench
-

Am only 14,000 out then.
-
BBC has 75% possession to Spurs
-
Hope that Toronto and VCTM (+jnr) are enjoying this. SuperMarc sounds as if he has made a good start.
-
We are making it a little too comfy for them!

Close then
-
Decent pressing now.
-
What have we had, 20 mins or so and Kozak hasn't touched the ball yet
-
We really need to get the ball.
-
Too casual Jed.
-
Bbc have Villa on 63% possession!
That's more like it.
-
The Blob has more shape than we have got at the moment.
-
Harry Kane shoots like Tonev
-
KEA too slow

I wish I could watch it on my iPad...
-
Spurs fans starting to piss me off singing
-
Sandro has just chucked up on the pitch.
-
more I see of this, I actually think we will win

You're missing very little
-
Is it me or does Bacuna look a bit like mario ballotelli, shame he doesn't play like him?
-
Barring a miracle, it looks like MON's Moscow or Houllier's Liverpool/ Man C. Except, forgivable. Show strong in the league this year - bed in young squad - win a pot next year, eh?
-
Need to feed Albrighton more and quicker he looks up for this.
-
We are getting back into this.
-
We're a bit casual but the ref is taking the piss with the 50/50s, everything has gone their way and we don't seem to be allowed to tackle.
-
Albrighton has definitely been on the juice
-
The ref has give us the short end of fuck all.
-
Albrighton in form is a hell of a useful player.
I still see no issue with the team selection either. Having lost Benteke for a few weeks, if Gabby and Delph go in with knocks and they are made worse ending up with a few weeks out too we are buggered.
I just wish we had a bench with the quality Spurs have on theirs. I really really hope Lambert is given some decent money for 3-4 better quality signings at some point.
-
Fuck me the ref has given us a free kick.
-
Quiet game so far but we're doing OK.
-
Good cross better from us there, come on boys.
-
Fuck me the ref has given us a free kick.
And another. Maybe removed his head from the media love in that is Spurs for a couple of seconds. He will be back up there soon.
Better from Tonev - actually tried to cross the ball there. Must have had something!
-
Unlucky.
-
great cross tonev...should have shot!
-
Great ball in from Tonev
-
This has been boring as hell to watch.
-
Good save.
-
He crosses better than he shoots....good save Steer
-
Cracking save Steer!
-
Steer looks a good keeper to me every time I see him.
How is that not a booking ref.
-
Allbrighton looks a different player tonight.Hope he keeps it up.
-
how many of this spurs lot played Sunday?
-
Tonev can cross but his passing is as bad as his shooting
-
Book the twat
-
Not many. Lemela maybe and Paulinho.
And how on Earth does Holtby not get booked there!!?? Villa player - it is straight in the book.
-
Bacuna has been disappointing in midfield so far today
-
BBC now 58% possession for Villa - strange statistics
-
Defoe looked yards offside there.
-
If they take their time they'll win easily tonight. Important we don't concede before half-time.
-
how many of this spurs lot played Sunday?
3 started and 2 came off bench i think - Walker, Vertonghen & Paulinho started.
-
Good stop again Steer. Good defensive work from Tonev too.
Agree re on Bacuna, he looks a wide player not a central one for me.
-
We have the best average of goalkeeper in the PL. No finer trio.
-
We do look quite a limited side, from a technical point of view.
-
Bollocks. Defoe.
-
fuck off
-
Concentrate on the league and experienced players do better blah blah.
-
Bollocks.
Great ball from Holtby - Defoe the fucker
-
Game over I imagine.
-
Bollocks
-
Thats shit from Steer....he shouldn't of stopped running out and claimed the ball....
-
Full back gone to sleep there.
-
Nothing less than Spurs deserve really, they have stepped it up in the last 10 minutes and we predictably can't cope.
Poor time to concede though.
-
Here we go.
-
from what I have seen, this has been pretty poor from Villa. We don't keep the ball well enough.
Players like KEA are just not good enough, have crap control and misplace too many passes. Vlaar needs to improve, slicing clearances on the edge of his own box-he is an international footballer for Holland, I expect more.
It's just uninspiring stuff again Villa. Come on!!
-
Bollocks. Bought we might make it in all square. They've shaded it to be fair.
-
We need to change this around a bit, we look a player short.
-
Shocking performance, not surprising though, given the team out there.
-
They look far more like Borussia Dortmund than we do for sure!
Well deserved lead, I guess you get what you pay for in terms of players most of the time and it's showing here
-
20-1 - we are only a goal down, have faith
-
Tonev tackles like Downing.
-
Realistically Tottenham have a much better team and have been the better team, much as I hate them.
-
Well, I dont know about you guys, but when Marc Albrighton is looking like the most technically gifted player in your side, I think it's fair to start questioning some of the managers transfer dealings.
-
or is that daftbet
-
Bollocks. Bought we might make it in all square. They've shaded it to be fair.
Spurs sound better than us by a country mile so far
-
HT
-
I bet Lambert ain't that bothered about this competition...
-
Our movement's shit, as usual. Players having trouble controlling the ball, and when they do they've basically got nobody to pass to, nobody's slipping into space and demanding the ball, they're all just holding their positions or running in straight lines. Which is ridiculous, because it's not as if playing so rigidly is keeping us tight - Spurs are waltzing through the defence on a regular basis.
-
Going towards the Holte now, we will win!!
-
Bollocks. Bought we might make it in all square. They've shaded it to be fair.
Shaded it? They've made us look like a League 1 side.
-
Well, I dont know about you guys, but when Marc Albrighton is looking like the most technically gifted player in your side, I think it's fair to start questioning some of the managers transfer dealings.
Isn't that the truth.
I actually think we are a shit team that just works hard and can on occasion fight for results. Repeat of last season it seems.
-
Fuck me this is tedious. Surprised it's only been one. Why did I fucking bother???
-
I wish we played like Swansea. Or even Southampton.
-
Shocking performance, not surprising though, given the team out there.
The only shocking thing is that we are competing well and do not look that inferior to a much more expensive Spurs side. They've made a couple more chances and taken one. We have not been dominated bar the 5 minutes before the goal.
What is 'shocking'?
-
Going towards the Holte now, we will win!!
You have taken
A.Drink.
B.drugs
C.Glue
D.Cheese
E.All of the above.
-
Lot of effort but Spurs midfield is alot better than ours....then again look at how much it cost them !
-
Must say I'm dreading the league game against them in a few weeks time.
They are simply a much stronger side than us in pretty much all the positions.
-
No movement at all, and frankly it's pretty poor.
-
Last 10 of the half they looked very good. But then when they have every player in the front 6 worth well over 10m behind Defoe, then against our 1-2 million pound bargains they are going to look a much better side realistically. Because they are. We need to give Lambert the means to get 3-4 technically much better players. Until we do, it will be attrition-al and a struggle.
-
I bet Lambert ain't that bothered about this competition...
That's not the problem.
The problem is things wouldn't be much different even if he did.
-
How far we have fallen, it's just a given that we will lose tonight with no real impact on the game.
-
I bet Lambert ain't that bothered about this competition...
That's not the problem.
The problem is things wouldn't be much different even if he did.
Indeed we are pretty short of quality.
-
Even if we get possession what is our out ball? A 40 yard ball to an isolated striker. If anything, push Tonev close to him and have him sniffing around the second balls.
We are trying far too hard to press at times, it's as if we play in roller skates.
I don't hold up much hope in this, we need to get a grip of midfield and push the defence up. I've never seen a defence turned so easy as ours in the last couple of years. It's ridiculous.
-
Shocking performance, not surprising though, given the team out there.
The only shocking thing is that we are competing well and do not look that inferior to a much more expensive Spurs side. They've made a couple more chances and taken one. We have not been dominated bar the 5 minutes before the goal.
What is 'shocking'?
Deano doesn't agree with you, Mal!
Former Aston Villa striker Dean Saunders on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra:
"Jermain Defoe could have scored six. Villa's goalkeeper has made three great saves. Erik Lamela looks good. Spurs are the better team by a mile."
-
We lack some really good technical players and leaders out there...said it for a long time that the Villa team for years has been one of the quietest around
-
Ive got to say I think KEA has been crap - could be the stream thou
-
The most depressing thing is that we could have played a stronger team and the team could have been more competitive and determined. Quite depressing.
-
No movement off the ball, they close us down then we panic and give it away.
-
Shocking performance, not surprising though, given the team out there.
The only shocking thing is that we are competing well and do not look that inferior to a much more expensive Spurs side. They've made a couple more chances and taken one. We have not been dominated bar the 5 minutes before the goal.
What is 'shocking'?
We are clearly watching different games. They are first to every ball, Defoe could have had a hattrick, we haven't made more than 3 consecutive passes, chasing shadows. I could go on.
I'm usually optimistic too.
-
I know this is a weakened team, but it shows our problems at home. We can't keep possession and build pressure and until we do that we'll lose at home more often than not.
-
Id prefer to win this than the manc game . oh well
-
Our movement's shit, as usual. Players having trouble controlling the ball, and when they do they've basically got nobody to pass to, nobody's slipping into space and demanding the ball, they're all just holding their positions or running in straight lines. Agree, nobody are making any runs and yes, some of the ball control is shocking. Sylla does not win many duels, El Ahmady Works hard, but sometimes looses the ball too easily. Bennett looks up for it, Albrighton has had a few good moments. Kosak has no support.
-
Id prefer to win this than the manc game . oh well
Agree.
-
Yep, the main issue is that they're better than us. I hate it when that happens.
-
This is a pretty weak surrender at home in a cup.
-
Total lack of class, very little movement and no cogent plan going forward that I can see.
Our defence is all over the place, they parted like the red sea when Defoe and H? went forward 10 mins before the goal.
You just knew that Defoe would score.
I wanted Sylla to play but he has been very lacklustre.
-
Last 10 of the half they looked very good. But then when they have every player in the front 6 worth well over 10m behind Defoe, then against our 1-2 million pound bargains they are going to look a much better side realistically. Exactly Lamela cost £30mil I doubt out entire team and bench tonight cost that.
-
PL two changes at HT please. Let's go out fighting.
-
Got to laugh at the official facebook updates, 'it's been a very even contest of over all'. Has it bollocks.
-
Some of you need to get a grip. We're down to our reserves except for Vlaar, Lowton (dropped on sat) and KEA. None of hem have exactly shone so far this season. Players like Bacuna and kozak are getting used to playing in this country, albrighton and bennet are playing first games in a while after spells out and wih poor form. We're playing a side thats much better than ours, players like Sandro and Holtby would walk into our first team.
They have created a couple more chances than us and are leading by a single goal.
-
Ive got to say I think KEA has been crap - could be the stream thou
I thought he was OK, he's doing his usual harrying, but when he wins possession he's got no options. It's all about intelligent movement, and we haven't got any. Part of that is because we don't have anyone floating around behind Kozak to collect the ball.
Movement - or lack thereof - is the biggest single problem we have, and we've had it for years and years. We criticise players for their inability to pass, when in reality they usually lose possession because nobody was moving to make an angle, so they end up having to try a hollywood effort that gets cut out 9 times out of 10.
It makes me wonder whether the player are coached to stay in their position, whether they do it themselves out of fear that they'll be caught out, or whether they're just a bit dim.
-
If we don't win a trophy this year it will be 17 years without one (that's frightening!). Any anorak out there know what our longest time period without a trophy is? I don't see it changing any decade soon either!!
-
We certainly need a few technical players, we loose posession after only a few seconds all the time. They do have a lot of quality, Spurs, though.
-
Face facts, they have a far superior squad than us, at least 3 years ahead of us. Without consistent investment we will never get close.
-

Spot on pal
-
Agreed with everything that django said. Let's see how they do in the second half.
-
There's a difference between a team costing lots and a team that doesn't even try to attack/win/try.
£20 to watch us not bother is not how I want to spend my money.
-
We're way too hectic out there. It's headless chicken chasing and closing down that just leaves gaps for the other team to exploit.
I wish we'd calm down a notch or two and keep the ball for a bit, so we get accustomed to passing to people in the same coloured shirt.
-
Let's see what the half time bollocking does for our chances. Spurs have been dominant but are only one nil up, an easy mistake to make.
-
I think they are trying, we're just not very good!
-

In which case tell the fans before they buy tickets that we're not fussed with the cup and won't be putting a competitive team out.
-
I admire the optimism but my guess is it will only get worse in the second half.
-

Totally agree with this.

That's the spirit. Bowery's on I'll have you know.
-
Bowery looks a beast. I bet Helenius does well
-
Lot of effort but Spurs midfield is alot better thanours....then again look at how much it cost them !
Can't argue with the maths of it all, it's just the least you'd expect from our 'budget' players is that they could bring a football under control within a 6foot radius of the point they receive it.
On the evidence of the last three games, 50% of our players are incapable of even that basic task.
-

It'd be worse if he played all he injured players wouldn't it. Anyway no need to worry Bowerys on.
-
Helenius that's a great chance.
-
That's a 100% penalty
-
HA HA HA that was a foul....now pull your pants up
-
How the fuck is that not a penalty?
-
Claiming a penalty on the radio?
-
Apparently de-bagging is not a foul
-
Penalty not given
-
Another shite ref
-
That's not a foul either
-
Definite pen.
-
How was that not a pen?
-
That is sexual assault
-
we are so good at corners ffs

Players like Bacuna and kozak are getting used to playing in this country, albrighton and bennet are playing first games in a while after spells out and wih poor form. We're playing a side thats much better than ours, players like Sandro and Holtby would walk into our first team.
They have created a couple more chances than us and are leading by a single goal.
Totally agree with this.
And you were saying? I didn't agree at all and I certainly don't now
-
rubbish
-
2-0 terrible defending from a corner.
-
shocking from the ref, how can pulling someones shorts down as they're about to shoot not be a penalty and a red card, piss poor from the ref and then they go down the other end and get a 2nd, fucking typical.
-
Should be 1-1 and them down to 10
-
What a crap goal. Keeper???
-
I don't think this will be any good for confidence.
-
Fair do's but we're pretty shite!
-
how was that not "foot up"?
-
Fight back starts here
-
Oh well, we can focus on the league now (cliche number 141) and at this rate, we might well need to..
-
I will be shocked if we don't concede any less than 5 against Man.City
-
What worries me is that there's a thin line between building something and just becoming the next Wigan, bobbing along and surviving on the cheap.
I don't think we are doing that yet but one thing I thought we really needed to do in the summer was buy better players than we had.
We didn't though, I suspect we've just bought more from the same place we did our shopping last year.
I worry that this is going to become another season of struggle when I see nothing to suggest technical improvement.
Spurs are now in a totally different galaxy to us, which I can accept but it makes me shudder when we get the ball and fail to string two passes together, as that's something we do far too much still.
-
how was that not "foot up"?
I thought that, anywhere else on the pitch it would have been given.
-
Who is this fat useless twat of a referee?
-
Worrying lack of quality in depth. Has Lerner bothered to come across this season?
-

Exactly, what is the point if you don't strive for something other than survival?
-
Reporting in from VP. I can confirm that it is a tight race to see who is the most shit tonight between us and the ref. I think we are just about edging it.
-
In which case tell the fans before they buy tickets that we're not fussed with the cup and won't be putting a competitive team out.
To be fair you must have expected us to play this kind of line up before going?
-
People need to just accept that against the top sides refs will not be fair 90% of the time.
-
Oh well, we can focus on the league now (cliche number 141) and at this rate, we might well need to..
Rich, you'll be delighted to hear me say now this is not 2007 anymore and Spurs are finally the real deal. ;)
-
Come on Villa. Rip their shorts off. It's allowed.
-
Thing is the gulf between us and Bradford last season was more than us and Spurs tonight. Yet they battled and won. We sound like we are not battling.
-
Worrying lack of quality in depth. Has Lerner bothered to come across this season?
There is no depth, our first team lacks creative quality.
-
At what point do we end up with a complex about playing at VP, or are we already there?
And what's our 6'6 CF doing on the wing FFS?
-

Ha, memory and elephants and all that! My assertion has finally come true Soccer, just six years too late!!!
-

Already there I'm afraid.

Hopefully harrying their full back.

You could of got a Spuds fan out of the crowd to ref and he wouldn't have been as shit as this one-eyed twat.
-
shocking referees decision not to give a pen, we have been poor at the back and spurs could have had many more -can only see them going on to beat us heavily from here.
Man city strikers will put those chances away -without okore we look very weak again -depressing evening.
Lambert has chosen a team tonight that made it easy for spurs , our best hope of a trophy and Europe and its gone already with barely a whimper - very disappointing.
-
My stream just went down for about 30 seconds. My mood brightened briefly.
-
Fuck it. Fuck it.
-
There's no lack of effort that's for sure.
-
The difference between our weakened team and theirs is massive.
-
Enough time to get 4 back.
-
Enough time to get 4 back.
Yes......if we were playing ourselves
-
We are giving it much more now. Let's have a goal back and give the crowd some cheer.
-
Oh we'll
-
Largely rubbish but Sylla looking good 2nd half.
-
According to the razor sharp commentary on 5 Live Extra, Lowton came through our youth set up and Nzogbia has already left, you'd think simple facts might not be too much to ask for.
-
Sylla must start over KEA.
-
There's a photograph of the short pulling incident on the BBC sports page.
-

Also, we lost against Norwich.
-
Last 10 of the half they looked very good.
Exactly Lamela cost £30mil I doubt out entire team and bench tonight cost that.
Then we should stop thinking that we can compete, frankly.
-
Can't see what we are building towards when the majority of players signed in the summer look wank. Building towards total apathy.
-

this sounds like a piss easy game for spuds...

Yes I keep reading that Lambert is building something special but i'm not seeing it. Fourth home game of the season tonight and if we lose this it will be three defeats. I'd like to know what the special something is going to be.
-
We can but it takes time!! Look at Swansea. Over time they have had a consistent plan. We have to stick by Lambert over time to build the same.
-
The problem we have is we talk about building, but there are barely any players in our entire squad who would get near the Spurs team.
-
this sounds like a piss easy game for spuds...
Pretty much as expected though. Just have the new players enjoy some game time. We have nothing to lose here, it was always a long shot at beating this kind of expensive team.
-

I thought I'd imagined that, they did actually say it didn't they!

If we carry one losing at home, time is something we haven't got.
-

Thanks.
"2109: As that photo below shows you, it was fairly extraordinary that Aston Villa didn't get a penalty to be honest. Fair play to Nicklas Helenius, who went out of his way to stay on his feet. Had he gone down in the area then referee Jon Moss had a tough call to make."
-
Ok, I'm only listening to this game while brewing some ale up, but what a load of bollocks this commentator and Saunders go on about. So far I have heard
"Villa being relegated will be decided in the next few games" Saunders
"Lowton come through our youth academy" Commentator
"Players being sold like Nzogbia" Saunders
"Bent not being replaced" Saunders
"The back four is the exact back four from last season" Saunders
What a load of crap. I'm going back to my brewing.
-
To be honest it would help us build something if we didn't piss and moan every time a better team is better than us.
-
What about a sub? Who've we got? Johnson could have a go.
-
Lambert has treated this match exactly like an unwinnable preseason friendly.
-
I think we will be lucky to finish 12th this year, we have no depth to our squad. It's alright building for the future but if we ain't careful That future will not be in the prem...
-
Why are we comparing ourselves to a Spurs squad that have spent about £90 million on players this summer alone? Different agendas, different time scales.
Given the team we had out, did anyone really expect any different?
-
VP has got that hollow echo type atmosphere tonight.
-

They did! It makes me sad that we're so off the footballing agenda now that the BBC can't even be bothered to get our last fixtures score right.
-
we are so poor to watch at home most of the time , it really is depressing , I was feeling optimistic having seen okore in defence but now I fear it will be another very frustrating season - there is so little creativity in our team that its frightening.
-

No, just the Tuesday night staff includes the apprentice.
-
Albrighton getting a little bit of joy down the right in last 5 mins. Spurs have taken their foot of the gas to be fair.
-
marc works hard and then does a cross like that
-
To be honest it would help us build something if we didn't piss and moan every time a better team is better than us.
Yep,we have only had 3 years to get rid of our moaning. What else have we got? I think the PL has got off lightly so far,but he has had more than enough time to sort out our shite defence.
-

It's surely not unreasonable to expect the team to give it a go. The trouble is, Spurs aren't even having to play well. They're not even out of first gear. We look shit, but it's not because of Spurs, it's because our players aren't passing and moving well enough, and that's not just down to the quality of the opposition.
-
We can but it takes time!! Look at Swansea. Over time they have had a consistent plan. We have to stick by Lambert over time to build the same.
Brilliant. If there's one thing I can't wait for, it's when Aston Villa becomes the next Swansea.
-
I was about to write that one plus point is that I'm warming to Mark Albrighton again ... and then he reminds me why he's the scarecrow from Wizard of Oz.
-
marc works hard and then does a cross like that
He would have expected someone to be there.
-
could have been different with a pen and spurs down to 10 men, bit like at chelsea really
-
Our players and way we play do remind me of a mid table championship team.
-
I still think back to leading 4-1 at their place and then shake my head at the direction that each club has since taken.
-
We are boring to watch in all fairness. Only Albrighton has a bit of unpredictability to him...and little end product. I'd love to see us get a scrappy goal, then equalise....
Strange to loan out tricky players like Grealish and Carruthers, yet retain Bowery...
-
How does Deano get a job commentating... did Suarez play today....
-
tonez with decent shot
-
FUUUCK ME a bloody good shot from Tonev
-
First on target screamer from Tonev. Shame Brad saved it
-
A good shot from Tonev!
-
Who is the ref?
-
Tonev on target, let off the fireworks.
-
Good hit from Tonev.
-
Come on boys.Keep working.
-
Who is the ref?
Stevie Wonder
-
Radio has Villa putting some pressure on, glad to hear it, still time for a couple or three!
-
Spurs demonstrate strength and quality in depth by bringing on Dawson
-
Bent scores for Fulham...
-
I think the most concerning thing is that we never signed a decent midfield play maker. Everton must be in second heaven signing Barry.
PL has my support and I like what is doing but in Jan he needs to pull that rabbit out of the hat.
-
With the game effectively lost we now start to play with some purpose, why not try something different and maybe do that all game?
-
Tonev has played the simple pass this second half. been much better.
-
Who's this kid?
-
Bent scores for Fulham...
That is because he has players to pass to him, guys like Sidwell.
-
NextGen winners centre forward. Quality.
-
With the game effectively lost we now start to play with some purpose, why not try something different and maybe do that all game?
We never play with pace at home. It's been the problem for the past I dunno 10 years.
-
Fuck it. Fuck it.
Burnt the paella?:)
-
Tonev has played the simple pass this second half. been much better.
as I typed this he was subbed ! haha
-
Just when Tonev was starting to look dangerous, Lambert brings him off....I'm tired of getting up at 4am to watch Villa play. Up the Villa!
-
Can't be arsed to research the numbers, but the amount Spurs have spent plus the Bale money is infintessimally more than Villa, since MON's team almost pipped them in the league 5 years ago. Tonight is really nothing to think about ever again. Showing fight in defeat this Saturday is vital, however.
-
Radio commentators fail to mention our sub, a substitution I heard on the radio via the stadium announcer!
-
Robinson, by request!
-
Fuck off.
-
GOOOOOAAAAAL
-
0-3
-
Awful. Absolutely awful.
-
Shame for steer. Undone his good work earlier.
-
that was poor
-
Sad night. I expected more from PL.
-
Poor from Bowery and Steer.
-
Desperate night of surrender really.
-
We go again
-
We looked beaten at kick off.
-
We looked beaten at kick off.
When we announced the team.
-
Going to be the same on Saturday and in a few weeks I'm afraid folks, we can't do anything at home against quality teams.
-
22,975
I was only 8k out
-
It's almost as if Lambert sent out the players tonight with the message: "Don't worry too much about this one lads, let's just focus on the weekend game".
Almost.
-
There's not a lot to say, really, after that.
Except, lads, don't lose heart, this was not your night but there will be others. Lots of them.
-

PL has my support and I like what is doing but in Jan he needs to pull that rabbit out of the hat.
The problem is you need to sign a bit of class to go along with all these cheap punts. Benteke aside we've signed some potentially solid players, but honestly I don't think we've signed anyone who's a top 6 standard player besides the big man (and Guzan).
Essentially we're shopping in the window that low end strugglers or promoted sides without much money have perennially shopped in. The negative aspect is, you're hoping for players to be potentially premiership standard, rather than getting proven quality. There's also a difference between buying players who are potentially top 6, to just buying players who are potentially top flight standard. If they don't hit that mark, then we're basically going along with a squad of mostly championship standard players, and that only takes you to one place...the championship.
We could do with a more proven, experienced spine in our side. We have Gabby and hes basically the only player we have who's done it for a long time at this level. Benteke will almost certainly leave in July. Without question. Why on Earth would he stay at a club who scrap in the bottom half every year. I don't think it'll be quite the squeeky bum relegation scrap of last season, but I don't think we'll be clear and able to take a deep breath till late April. Somewhere between 10th and 15th at a guess. Is that good enough for Villa? Not nearly.
Signings like Barry and perhaps an experienced CB would have done us a lot of good. As would splashing out on a flair player in midfield.
-
An uncomfortable reminder of where we are. Still the Saturday game is far more important. Happy to see the B team get some time.
-
Alan Hansen didn't say this about us but he's right, we'll never win anything with just kids.
-
I feel I'm being harsh by being so critical, but I think we have been crap this evening. It's not much fun watching a team dominate us at home, especially this horrid lot. Yes, they have a good team, but we play such uninspiring dross at times. A poor, poor performance.
-
How long until the good will runs out? We can't keep surrendering at home regardless of the opposition or which players the manager picks.
-
An uncomfortable reminder of where we are. Still the Saturday game is far more important. Happy to see the B team get some time.
How is it more important? This was one of two chances to have a go at winning something.
-
Goal! - Darren Bent - Fulham 2 - 1 Everton
Darren Bent scores a left footed goal. Fulham 2-1 Everton.
Hm!
-
GOOOOOAAAAAAL
-
Embarrassing.
Oh, and fuck off AVB you detestable cnut
-
0-4. Bleurgh.
-
GOOOOOAAAAAAL
Don't be cruel
-
All I wanted was a boring middle of the table season.4-0 says it all.
-
How long until the good will runs out? We can't keep surrendering at home regardless of the opposition or which players the manager picks.
We stuck with him through far worse than this. Sod it. UTV and on to the weekend!
-
What a big pile of poo.
Dreadful. From start to finish.
-
Depressing and embarrassing. Overall, I can't really see how we are any better than last season
4-0 well deserved according to R5
-
I fucking hate this so much. FFS
-
Embarrassing. Swindon gave Chelsea a better game.
-
I am starting to hate them again.
-
It's almost as if Lambert sent out the players tonight with the message: "Don't worry too much about this one lads, let's just focus on the weekend game".
Almost.
Yep and I was a fierce critic of Houllier for doing that. Poor and unprofessional.
-
Goal! - Darren Bent - Fulham 2 - 1 Everton
Darren Bent scores a left footed goal. Fulham 2-1 Everton.
Hm!
no suprise
-
Just shows the massive gulf in us and the top sides especially when we are missing 5 first teamer's
-
Depressing and embarrassing. Overall, I can't really see how we are any better than last season

We're not and that's the problem. Can't see past anything other than another spanking on Saturday
-
Depressing and embarrassing. Overall, I can't really see how we are any better than last season
4-0 well deserved according to R5
I turned off the stream - oh shit . that is crap
-
Next 3 at home Man City, Spurs and Everton, how depressing. Is Saturday really a big game, more of a right off I'd say, Hull, Norwich etc. are big games not Man City for me.
-
Nothing to say, at all.
-
Perthetic really
-
Yet again a clueless performance at home from a team with a clueless manager . This idiot is up there with o dreary and the ginger one .
-
Bring on Man City.!!!
-
Dodging relegation on a low budget is our club's highest goal. May as well bring in Peter Coates and Tony Pulis and oust the Yankee absentee and Jock Wegoagain.
-
Exactly why I didnt go tonight and couldnt be arsed to watch via a stream. Apathy with a capital A
Going Saturday but not looking forward to it..
On the bright side my daughters team have lost their last two games 7 nil and 6 nil so at least AV are showing better form!
-
Fuck, we are poor. Bowery certainly did not grab his chance. Helenius tried and wanted the ball more. How was that shorts moment not a penalty ??? There was (as usual at home) much more aggression and willingness to try things in the second half, but the quality is just not there.
Yes, Tottenham are better, but I do not like the assumption that we should just accept it as a fact that they are miles ahead of us. Remember, not so long ago we were told Champions League was what we were aiming for. Now it is all about bringing wages down and giving "Young and hungry" lower League players the chance to improve Aston Villa Football Club.
-
Sorry, but again another example of the dire state football has become as a spectacle with the gulf in class between the clubs that are able to throw good money after bad and the rest. I really wish the Man Utds Man Citys, Chelseas, Arsenals, Liverpools of this world and the next one to be taken over by some bored tycoon with more money than sense would just all fuck off and play each other week after week till they get bored shitless like we are now watching them. What have they done to the beautiful game?
-
