That's about right for me given the number of injuries and limited chances we'll have to test players elsewhere.

Spurs much stronger line up than i expected - fear this is asking too much of our starting line up to win this :(

It's effectively 8 changes from regular team. This is the sort of selection where I start questioning the Managers motives. Neglecting cups is not a good thing.

I'd have to agree with this. It's not as if we're on a full on assault for the top 4, and it's too early to be worrying about a relegation battle. It's a cup where the top 5-6 generally rest players and with a favorable draw we could have a decent run.

I'd be highly surprised if we go through tonight, looking at our team

Villa 3rds versus Spurs 2nds. No idea what will happen. Injuries and poor home record and Bradford SF have seemingly combined to convince Lambo to focus on dodging the 4th successive relegation battle.

Steer

El Ahmadi, Sylla

Bacuna, Tonev, Albrighton

Kozak

4-3-3 with Tonev and Albrighton playing the Gabby and Weimann roles but probably slightly withdrawn from where they play I reckon.

Back in the days when Martin & Randy could do no wrong, our inevitable early rounds cup defeats were invariably followed by comments along the lines of "Cups don't matter" and "I'd rather get three points on Saturday." I bet nobody says that tonight.

To be fair though during those days we had an outside shot at CL qualification.  That's not the case anymore.  Bit disappointed with the team selection but maybe they'll prove us wrong!

I've got to be honest, I have an irrational hatred of spurs and because I think they'll win I'm going to try and pretend the match is not happening.  Then I can shrug nonchalantly when I'm given grief by spurs fans tomorrow at work, pretending I don't care.

Lambert's pretty much playing the team available to him.
I don't have a problem with Steer being given a run out; Lambert obviously rates him.
I'd love to see Helenius play but Lambert has obviously decided he wants 2 wingers and three combative players in the middle. I'm sure Helenius will get more game-time today than previously.
Baker is obviously getting some gametime after injury and Bennett is in (to public acclaim, based on the slating Luna has had on here recently).

As someone else has said, Spurrrrrrs are in a different class to us currently; they've spent x5 what we did over the summer.

It doesn't make any sense that we're not starting Helenius.

I can only assume that he doesn't want us to play a traditional 442 with him and Kovak (which I somewhat agree with).  Whilst people say Helenius is good dropping deep, I'm not sure he's got the mobility to become an extra midfielder when we need to bulk up the numbers.

In fact from my very limited sightings his style reminds me of Teddy Sheringham.  Useful at dropping deep to find space and make passes, but certainly not an extra midfielder from a defensive perspective.

Albrighton in form is a hell of a useful player.

I still see no issue with the team selection either. Having lost Benteke for a few weeks, if Gabby and Delph go in with knocks and they are made worse ending up with a few weeks out too we are buggered.

I just wish we had a bench with the quality Spurs have on theirs. I really really hope Lambert is given some decent money for 3-4 better quality signings at some point.

from what I have seen, this has been pretty poor from Villa. We don't keep the ball well enough.
Players like KEA are just not good enough, have crap control and misplace too many passes. Vlaar needs to improve, slicing clearances on the edge of his own box-he is an international footballer for Holland, I expect more.
It's just uninspiring stuff again Villa. Come on!!

Our movement's shit, as usual. Players having trouble controlling the ball, and when they do they've basically got nobody to pass to, nobody's slipping into space and demanding the ball, they're all just holding their positions or running in straight lines. Which is ridiculous, because it's not as if playing so rigidly is keeping us tight - Spurs are waltzing through the defence on a regular basis.

Last 10 of the half they looked very good. But then when they have every player in the front 6 worth well over 10m behind Defoe, then against our 1-2 million pound bargains they are going to look a much better side realistically. Because they are. We need to give Lambert the means to get 3-4 technically much better players. Until we do, it will be attrition-al and a struggle.

Even if we get possession what is our out ball? A 40 yard ball to an isolated striker. If anything, push Tonev close to him and have him sniffing around the second balls.

We are trying far too hard to press at times, it's as if we play in roller skates.

I don't hold up much hope in this, we need to get a grip of midfield and push the defence up. I've never seen a defence turned so easy as ours in the last couple of years. It's ridiculous.

Agree, nobody are making any runs and yes, some of the ball control is shocking. Sylla does not win many duels, El Ahmady Works hard, but sometimes looses the ball too easily. Bennett looks up for it, Albrighton has had a few good moments. Kosak has no support.

Players like Bacuna and kozak are getting used to playing in this country, albrighton and bennet are playing first games in a while after spells out and wih poor form. We're playing a side thats much better than ours, players like Sandro and Holtby would walk into our first team.

I thought he was OK, he's doing his usual harrying, but when he wins possession he's got no options. It's all about intelligent movement, and we haven't got any. Part of that is because we don't have anyone floating around behind Kozak to collect the ball.

Movement - or lack thereof - is the biggest single problem we have, and we've had it for years and years. We criticise players for their inability to pass, when in reality they usually lose possession because nobody was moving to make an angle, so they end up having to try a hollywood effort that gets cut out 9 times out of 10.

It makes me wonder whether the player are coached to stay in their position, whether they do it themselves out of fear that they'll be caught out, or whether they're just a bit dim.

Can't argue with the maths of it all, it's just the least you'd expect from our 'budget' players is that they could bring a football under control within a 6foot radius of the point they receive it.

On the evidence of the last three games, 50% of our players are incapable of even that basic task.

Some of you need to get a grip. We're down to our reserves except for Vlaar, Lowton (dropped on sat) and KEA. None of hem have exactly shone so far this season. Players like Bacuna and kozak are getting used to playing in this country, albrighton and bennet are playing first games in a while after spells out and wih poor form. We're playing a side thats much better than ours, players like Sandro and Holtby would walk into our first team.

They have created a couple more chances than us and are leading by a single goal.
Totally agree with this.

And you were saying? I didn't agree at all and I certainly don't now

What worries me is that there's a thin line between building something and just becoming the next Wigan, bobbing along and surviving on the cheap.

I don't think we are doing that yet but one thing I thought we really needed to do in the summer was buy better players than we had.

We didn't though, I suspect we've just bought more from the same place we did our shopping last year.

I worry that this is going to become another season of struggle when I see nothing to suggest technical improvement.

Spurs are now in a totally different galaxy to us, which I can accept but it makes me shudder when we get the ball and fail to string two passes together, as that's something we do far too much still.

shocking referees decision not to give a pen, we have been poor at the back and spurs could have had many more -can only see them going on to beat us heavily from here.

Man city strikers will put those chances away -without okore we look very weak again -depressing evening.
Lambert has chosen a team tonight that made it easy for spurs , our best hope of a trophy and Europe and its gone already with barely a whimper - very disappointing.

Exactly Lamela cost £30mil I doubt out entire team and bench tonight cost that.

Then we should stop thinking that we can compete, frankly.

"Lowton come through our youth academy" Commentator
"Players being sold like Nzogbia" Saunders
"Bent not being replaced" Saunders
"The back four is the exact back four from last season" Saunders

What a load of crap. I'm going back to my brewing.

It's surely not unreasonable to expect the team to give it a go. The trouble is, Spurs aren't even having to play well. They're not even out of first gear. We look shit, but it's not because of Spurs, it's because our players aren't passing and moving well enough, and that's not just down to the quality of the opposition.

Just when Tonev was starting to look dangerous, Lambert brings him off....I'm tired of getting up at 4am to watch Villa play. Up the Villa!

Can't be arsed to research the numbers, but the amount Spurs have spent plus the Bale money is infintessimally more than Villa, since MON's team almost pipped them in the league 5 years ago. Tonight is really nothing to think about ever again. Showing fight in defeat this Saturday is vital, however.

Almost.

I think the most concerning thing is that we never signed a decent midfield play maker.  Everton must be in second heaven signing Barry.

PL has my support and I like what is doing but in Jan he needs to pull that rabbit out of the hat.
The problem is you need to sign a bit of class to go along with all these cheap punts. Benteke aside we've signed some potentially solid players, but honestly I don't think we've signed anyone who's a top 6 standard player besides the big man (and Guzan).

Essentially we're shopping in the window that low end strugglers or promoted sides without much money have perennially shopped in. The negative aspect is, you're hoping for players to be potentially premiership standard, rather than getting proven quality. There's also a difference between buying players who are potentially top 6, to just buying players who are potentially top flight standard. If they don't hit that mark, then we're basically going along with a squad of mostly championship standard players, and that only takes you to one place...the championship.

We could do with a more proven, experienced spine in our side. We have Gabby and hes basically the only player we have who's done it for a long time at this level. Benteke will almost certainly leave in July. Without question. Why on Earth would he stay at a club who scrap in the bottom half every year. I don't think it'll be quite the squeeky bum relegation scrap of last season, but I don't think we'll be clear and able to take a deep breath till late April. Somewhere between 10th and 15th at a guess. Is that good enough for Villa? Not nearly.

Signings like Barry and perhaps an experienced CB would have done us a lot of good. As would splashing out on a flair player in midfield.

I feel I'm being harsh by being so critical, but I think we have been crap this evening. It's not much fun watching a team dominate us at home, especially this horrid lot. Yes, they have a good team, but we play such uninspiring dross at times. A poor, poor performance.

How long until the good will runs out? We can't keep surrendering at home regardless of the opposition or which players the manager picks.

Fuck, we are poor. Bowery certainly did not grab his chance. Helenius tried and wanted the ball more. How was that shorts moment not a penalty ??? There was (as usual at home) much more aggression and willingness to try things in the second half, but the quality is just not there.

Yes, Tottenham are better, but I do not like the assumption that we should just accept it as a fact that they are miles ahead of us. Remember, not so long ago we were told Champions League was what we were aiming for. Now it is all about bringing wages down and giving "Young and hungry" lower League players the chance to improve Aston Villa Football Club.

I really wish the Man Utds Man Citys, Chelseas, Arsenals, Liverpools of this world and the next one to be taken over by some bored tycoon with more money than sense would just all fuck off and play each other week after week till they get bored shitless like we are now watching them. What have they done to the beautiful game?
