I didn't realise till seeing yesterdays programme that he had recently passed away.
He was at the Villa when I started watching in 1966/67.
Tony Hateley had left early in the season and John Woodward was brought in. Unfortunately Woodies 3rd game was against the Smethwick cloggers, as with a few Villa players over the years they kicked him out the game and he was injured for rest of the season.
Stobart took over the Number 9 shirt and scored 11 goals in the last 20 games of the season. Not a bad strike rate in what was a very poor team, but it was not enough to save us from relegation. His two goals in the final home game against Everton were to be our last in Division One at Villa Park until Leighton Phillips 8 years later.
Whenever I have seen or heard the name Stobart, my first thought was never trucks.

Another one from my past. I too remember Barry Stobart as another from those days when our teams were truly awful. I also missed the fact of his passing, and it was only a few weeks ago that I'd looked him up on that same Wiki piece you have linked Andy.
Similarly, whenever I'm on the motorways and I see the Stobart lorries, I always think of Barry. RIP Barry, I remember you well.

Likewise with the truck thing.
I too didn't know that he had passed on. I always thought that we signed him from Wolves (which would have been coincidental as the pic is of him playing against Wolves I think. Isn't that Ron Flowers?) but I notice from the Wiki link that he played 14 games for Man City before joining us.
They were tough times to be a Villa fan.

One of my first Villa heroes, RIP Barry

Up until around 5 years ago, and he became too ill to work, Barry was cleaning my windows at home.
A true gent and would always stop and chat about his playing days
