That's the right eleven for me. We need Delph to bomb forwards from the middle though, to really hem Newcastle in their third.

They do have some really good players. Let's hope that it's still all going southwards for them mentally.

I must say, I don't mind when Beelzebub is co-commentator, at least he can be quite complementary towards us.
Barry Horne and Tony Gale never have a good word to say about us.

I think Sylla has been really unlucky not to have started the season in the side, but KEA has done really well.

They are a much better side than last season, or popular belief suggests.

I think I'd agree with that, although it still lacks a bit of flair in the middle. Good to see Vlaar and Okore starting together again, I'd say that's the centre-back pairing settled now, assuming no complete nightmares.

Without a player that the ball sticks to and thus gives us natural possession of the ball, we are very set up to counter.

Sounds like all our other games so far this season, so far. Need to not concede while they're on top and then hopefully we'll come into it.

I can't see the game, but Westwood's passing has been poor so far this season. And Weimann's touch has been really poor so far too.

Need to get a grip. Newcastle's front three certainly looks dangerous on paper.

Sounds like we're getting a right going over, down our right in particular - Lowton and Weimann's side.

If a few of our players have second season syndrome, we're going to need these new signings to settle in quickly. To be honest, I really don't think I could bear another season spent in the bottom six. There were times last year when I felt on the verge of losing interest.

Need to get a grip here.

Title: Re: Aston Villa v Newcastle United Match Thread
Post by: SamTheMouse on September 14, 2013, 03:24:03 PM
Our midfield is powder puff weak. None of them have a defined role. Even Delph, while he's looked impressive lately, essentially just runs around a lot. None of our midfielders are especially good at scoring goals, creating goals or stopping opposition from scoring goals. That goal started with El Ahmadi just being bullied off the ball.

Why can't we just have a couple of big bastards there to break up opposition attacks, and one creative attacking mid who scores goals.

A win here, nor a defeat, should be read into too much. But was really hoping for three points today. We can't come back from a goal down in every game.

I thought Sylla has been very unlucky to be edged out by KEA so far this season. Sylla being in the team coincided with our excellent run at the back end of last year. He's way more physical than KEA, who I still don't rate.

This is not a good Newcastle side.  I get the feeling that if we settle down, play football we will win this.  We just needed that experienced player in midfield to get a grip of the game.

On paper their players are way better than ours. For once they're showing it on grass.

Just for balance, we deserved at least a point from Chelsea and were robbed and the second half against Liverpool was decent. So Arsenal wasn't a one off.
No arguments about being shit in this first half though. The home crowd really deserve better than what's been served up for the last few years.

Piss poor. I can't escape the feeling that we're still relegation scrappers. We still look tactically pretty clueless. We look good at full pelt, hitting teams quickly on the break, but our system isn't really set up too well for telling possession in the attacking third.

Lowton, Westwood and Wiemann have all been poor, not just today, but they've all been below par this season. In all honesty, I'm not sure, as a right sided forward, Wiemann is ready to be starting week in, week out. He's certainly not good enough in that position. The problem is, with 3 central forwards also in the squad, he's left essentially filling in as a right forward. He does often look like a square peg in a round hole. At the moment he just can't hit a barn door either. If he wants to keep his place he's got to start tucking these goals away.

CB hasn't had any service, and has been quiet today. Gab has had sparks but again, we all know what you get from the Gabster can be erratic.

KEA is looking out of his depth again.

For me I'd be tempted to bring Helenius or Tonev on for Wiemann, and perhaps Sylla on for KEA.

Newcastle have been the better side, but they're not great. However we look very susceptable to diagonal long balls on the counter. They've had some good breaks, cutting out our fullbacks, but haven't made the most. A better team might be murdering us today. Tony needs to get a lot tighter on Ben Arfa.

And yes...I really wish we had an Ozil kind of player. Even a poor mans equivilant. We're sorely lacking guile in midfield. We don't do subtlety, but sometimes you need that to win games. If we rely purely on picking teams off when we hit them at top gear on the counter, we're not going to pick up enough points to do anything but the same as last season and that's look over our shoulders at the trap door for most of the season.

Even worse, there's no midfield to speak of. Delph aside, they may as well not be there; no creativity and no chance of them stopping an attack. Newcastle's second goal was a great example: we were cut to ribbons from the midfield. Utter shit.

Any team playing away must wish to play Villa. We start home games with a complete lack of pressing or urgency. You then have the other end of the spectrum where we have been panicking for the last 30minutes, hitting it quickly with no composure.

That is so depressing

I could accept 3 points out of 9 when weve played the likes of Arsenal, Chelski and Liverpool but when that list now includes Mike Ashleys train set i begin to worry a bit. Why do we make ordinary sides (and yes the "Toon army", you are ordinary) look good, remember Barcelona - sorry Wigan at VP last season, ripping us apart and they were relegated for fucks sake!!. We just dont have enough ball winners to disrupt teams who basically have license to pass us to death. Westwood, lowton and Weimann seriously worry me, their form has collapsed, i honestly felt good about this season but now im not so sure. Oh and a cheery hello to the fucking neanderthals from Newcastle who bailed out of 2 coaches on Witton lane at about five to three yesterday, its heart warming to know that not every society has moved into the 21st Century and that some places are still stuck in the 1980s, what a bunch of fucking Dinosaurs.
