Saturday 14.9.13 3pm KO
3-0 Home win.
Benteke 12
Weimann 34
Delph 56
-
Villa 5 (Yorke hat trick, Harry Hampton brace)
Newcastle 2 ( Ant, Dec )
-
4-0 villa win
Benteke 2 Gabby and Vlaar
Newcastle may have gathered together over the international break but I don't see it and I'm firmly of the opinion that they are the most fragmented, disinterested side I've ever seen this early in the season. They just remind me of Blues in their last 10 when they went down last time, no one seems to care that they look shit.
-
Think 2-1 win, we'll take the lead for once, they'll equalise and Benteke will score a late winner.
Newcastle still have some decent players Krul, Colo, Cabaye, Tiote, Sissoko, Ben Arfa. Dunno if they're all fit but Pardew says Cabaye will start the game.
-
1-1
-
It's really important we win this game.
-
Extremely big game , we have had a solid start to the season but a win here and at Norwich will give us a great base to build from - i will go for a 3-1 win .
-
4-0 villa win
Benteke 2 Gabby and Vlaar

I take it you haven't seen much of sunderland this season then yet?
-
Should win, probably won't
-
Comfortable Villa win in this.
-
I'd forgotten there was a football season in progress !!
2-1 Villa
-
Win win win win win - or else!
-
2-2 draw, last minute Toon equalizer
-
Win win win win win - or else!
Or else what ? You'll tell a One Direction fan where Gabby lives ?
-
Cabeye makes them tick. If he plays, they'll play well. If he doesn't, they look a shambles and vulnerable to a beating.
-
A win.
A clean sheet.
We go home happy.
-
7 points should be the targets from this, Norwich and Hull away. Think it's achieveable and we can also nick a point off Man. City. That would represent a strong start to the season.
-
home banker of the season.
-
3-1 home win. benteke weimann and gabby to tear them a fresh ring piece then we go again!!
-
The greatest danger is over confidence, complacency, otherwise we have a better squad/manager/individual players, and we should win all three.
Methinks Mr Lambert wont tolerate the above, but its a worry.
-
2-1 Villa win
-
I think this is an important game. Both teams will be looking to get something from this game. I think we will win 3-1
-
Not sure if many of the current team are playing tonight but a crowd of almost 51000 for Steve harpers testimonial .
-

Get Gabby on quick!
He can kick the shit out of them now he's had a bit of practice! ;-)
-
A convincing win would be nice.
-

Sod that, I expect 7 points just from the Newcastle game. I expect the ref to award us the bonus points for our masterclass performance and relegate Newcastle on the spot for the crime of being Newcastle.
Roll on the game!
-
2-1 benteke Libor winner
-
We should win, however I have a feeling we'll draw.
-
3-1 win
-
Frustrating draw. 2-2.
-
Definitely capable of a good win here. I'd love a nice professional 2-0 win
But I'm not underestimating the players Newcastle have. If they ever get their act together they've got some really good players. Remy and Ben Arfa I think are real threats. Cabaye and tiote have been poor for a while but in theory alongside sissokho that's a tasty midfield. And krul and coloccini can be very tough to get past.
It'd be great if we could get off to a better start. We've been slow out if the blocks in all four games this far. And hoping we don't concede first again.
Delph and the rest of the midfield should be fresh which is great. And benteke and gabby reasonably fresh too. Hopefully the break won't have interrupted our flow too much. And we'll have spent time improving our quick passing under pressure.
-
3-0 (Benteke, Westwood, Agbonlahor)
Pardew to be sacked within 48 hours.
-
I'm not that confident about this to be honest.
1-2 defeat.
-
A more difficult game methinks than many will predict on here. They have found just a little bit of form and we haven't yet mastered how to play things at home. Any team coming and packing their midfield with half decent players as they have is quite capable of frustrating us I think. I fear a 1-1 draw and hope I'm wrong
-
Newcastle score first = 1-1
Villa score first = 3-1
-
3 points please, don't care how.
-
Been looking forward to this one for what feels like an eternity. Real chance to get right on track, a good healthy win will put a great complexion on the season. And we will get it, 3-1 Villa, Benteke predictably amongst the goals again, and hopefully Gabby to get off the mark to underline his England credentials. The clean sheet is perhaps a game or two away yet though!
-
1-1
-
Guzan
Lowton
Vlaar
Okore
Luna
Delph
Westwood
KEA
Weimann
Agbonlahor
Benteke
-
After the run of games we've had this is a must win one so I will say 2-1 to us Benteke and Gabby scoring.
-
4-0 villa win
Benteke 2 Gabby and Vlaar

I take it you haven't seen much of sunderland this season then yet?
To me sunderland look like a squad that don't know each other, which they don't with the amount of signings they've made. Newcastle look like a squad with a few cliques in it and importantly, none of them seem to give a shit about the club and I really don't see much fight in them.
-
We have to win this if we're going to prove that things really have changed from last season. It is all well and good saying we should be two points at better off so far, but our home form over the past three seasons is woeful.
Newcastle are a side with decent players rather than a decent side. They looked callow against Man City and its clear for all to see that they are rotten to the core.
Last season the second 45 minutes against these turned our season around and we should have picked up at least a point. We have to be being sides like Newcastle at home if we want to finish in the top half.
Anything but a win and I think it will set the wrong tone for the season.
-
2-0 with a late second goal to wrap it up.
-
It does have a 'let's see how good we really are' type feel to it. I'm crap at predicting scores but if we play like we did against Chelsea, then it should be three points.
-
Any Villa win will do!
-
If we can't win games like this we're in trouble still. As well as we did in the first 3 games against 3 bogey sides, we still came out with 3 points from 9. Pride is one thing, but points are what we want and we have to pick the majority up against lesser sides like Newcastle. Especially at home.
3-1 Villa. Tekkers, Gabby and Helenius from the bench.
-
About as confident as I've ever felt about beating Newcastle at home, who we often seem to be pants against. Could be a good time to play them, what with them planning a protest before their next home game.
3-1 Villa. Hopefully that disgraceful cheat Debuchy will be sent off, I've never known a right-back to spend a whole game diving before he showed up.
-
1 or 2 nil fancy another clean sheet.
Albrighton to Derby on loan is all they are talking about up here, probably not worth its own thread.
-
@MatKendrick: Mike Dean will referee Aston Villa v Newcastle on Saturday #avfc #nufc
-
2-0. Benteke and Delph.
-

I say it is. Very few Villa related news stories lately, go for it.
-
Villa Park needs another good thumping win like Sunderland. I am going for 4.0
-
Newcastle are in disarray. Joe, Alan and Mike are not the ideal combination to bring success.
We really need to win this one to keep the momentum of good performances going.
Villa 2-0

-
Would be ace if Gabby got a hatrick. This would go down as the week of his career!
-
Think we'll win this 2-0. Benteke and weimann scoring
-
this is a big game for us. the win at arsenal was a bonus, but the real challenge in "our league" starts on saturday.
-
3-1 Benteke x2 & Weimann
-
It will be tough as the onus is on us to dictate the play and they can just flood the midfield and sit back. Real test this.
-

What happens if we draw this and then go to Norwich and Hull and win at each?
I'm half expecting that tbh, usually when we have good seasons, it's our away form that is above average, really can't remember the last time we were really good at home, just doesn't seem to happen with us whoever the players and manager are.
As you say though Newcastle have a good team of individuals rather than collectively being great.
I am looking forward to watching Ben Arfa though. A mercurial injury prone player but plays off the cuff and scores great goals.
That's the sort of player I'd like to see in the squad to give us another dimension. Someone who went we're playing shite and heading for another 0-0 at home can just whack one in from 25 yards to win the game as he did for Newcastle against Fulham.
-
I think PL has Tonev down as our Ben Arfur. Someone who can pull something from nothing. But he will take time to get up to pace in the prem. Can see Kozak coming on and nicking a goal to win the game .... 1-0
-
I think this will be 1-1, with us going a goal down and coming back second half. Like Soccer, at home I can see it being a bit rocky this season, but we will pick up wins away. Although we look better, this is a really strong league, and I don't expect much more than 5-6 points more than last season.

Paul Lambert is refusing to curb Aston Villa’s enthusiasm against Newcastle, despite the claret and blues topping the early season bookings table.
Villa have picked up 12 yellow cards in their first three Premier League matches, more than any other team in the top flight.
They had five players cautioned in the win at Arsenal (Ron Vlaar, Antonio Luna, Ashley Westwood, Gabby Agbonlahor and Christian Benteke).
Four players had their names taken in the defeat at Chelsea (Brad Guzan, Karim El Ahmadi, Westwood and Benteke).
And there were three more bookings in the home loss to Liverpool (Matt Lowton, Fabian Delph and Luna).
Aston Villa v Newcastle: Follow Mat Kendrick's live match notepad
But Lambert insists the claret and blues are not a dirty side and the Villa manager has no intention of asking his players to reign in their competitiveness and combativeness.
“It’s a contact game – we’re not going to curtail them,” said Lambert, ahead of Newcastle’s visit to Villa Park tomorrow.
“That’s how we play the game. There’s not been a bad challenge as such, I don’t think.
“We try to play hard and fair and that’s what we’ll continue to do.”
Lambert does not plan to go on the defensive despite 25 Premier League games without a Villa clean sheet.
“Of course I want to put it right but I want a team that’s exciting,” he added. “I want to try to attack.
“This season we’ve started off by playing really well and we’re doing well at the moment.
“We can take confidence from it because the way we played was really positive. Training this week has been at a high level.”
-
Win Win 2-1
-
Win 4-0 Villa. Easy as that.
-
I think PL has Tonev down as our Ben Arfur.
Does that make him Toni Arthur ?
-
Performances have been good so far this season, but they can easily fade if we don't convert that into results and the confidence that comes with it. I heard on the radio that Newcastle have only won two out of 21 away. One of those was obviously against us, but it's still a stat that says it's a very winnable game.
I'll go 2-1 Villa. Benteke and Gabby with the goals.
-
We should be winning this, and we should be playing the sort of football that home teams play in games they should be winning: on the front foot, keeping the ball, taking the initiative and making the opposition think about how long the coach journey was down, and how long it is back up again.
-

Indeed.
Lets build on a decent start and get a few wins together against the likes of newcastle, Norwich and hull- we have the chance to build a solid base for the season and newcastle are there for the taking - bring it on!
-
I see this one being a disappointing draw, 1-1.
-
wonder how ticket sales are going for this? Has to be close to a full house you'd hope. They'll likely sell their allocation.

Just had a look on OS and there are loads of tickets left wings of Trinity more than 50% available same with some of Upper Witton and a fairly large number at back of Holte and wings of Upper Holte.
-
Two goals for Gabby, representing the two fingers he'll be sticking up at the absent and oblivious England football manager.

Our play style is pretty much perfect to be facing a team like Newcastle, most of their players play for themselves first and foremost so lost of closing down and pressure when they get the ball and make them chase shadows when we have it.
-

And another two for Tekkers and Andi, please. Don't mind if Delph gets in on the action, either.
And a clean sheet. :)

I'll go for 7-0 too. Sounds about right.

Was listening to the Grauniad's football podcast (strange how their written football stuff can be so bad, yet their podcast is so good) and one of the bods on there said Villa are an 'excellent team', 'very well drilled' and that he expected us to 'batter Newcastle 3 or 4 nil'.
I think he might be on to something there.
-
I have a bad feeling. I am just not convinced by us at home at all.
-
The weather conditions could mean quite a few mistakes by both teams.
Not good goalkeeping weather at all. We should still win this one however.

Cloudy with occasional sun during late afternoon is bad weather for football?

I thought the best conditions in the world for football was recently approved at about 50 centrigrade.

1-1

I will be making an appearance tomorrow and as others on here feel these are the games that we have to start winning if we are to avoid being in the lower reaches of the premier league for most of the season, the team seems to have a good spirit and more belief than last season and we do have goals in us so I think we will get the job done, 3-1 Villa.
-
As a Newcastle fan, I'd expect you guys to win tomorrow, but it won't be a thrashing. We have been dreadful all season, and only managed to beat Fulham thanks to Ben Arfa. Its expected that Tiote, Cabaye and Remy will start tomorrow. The only glimmer of hope for us is that when Remy came on against Fulham, we looked a lot better and we started to play good football.
I've been impressed with Villa this season. Looks like your lads will have a good one.
I think it will be 2-1 Villa. But a draw wouldn't surprise me.
-
Extremely excited for tomorrow 1st game of year in my new seats...4-0 I reckon, think the lads will be raring to go
-
We are going to need to be more dominant in midfield if we are going to win convincingly. 2-0 however. Tekkers to have a blinder.
-
The weather conditions could mean quite a few mistakes by both teams.
I love it, blame the weather for our sieve like defence. Ever thought about football management Ron ?

36-37k sounds about right for this game.
-
This could be one of those rare beasts, a 0-0.
Neither side good enough to win, but we'll probably feel the more hard done by come 4.45.

I'd be prepared to wager a fair old wedge on us not being involved in a goalless draw all season
-
villa to win 2-1
-
With Mike Dean in charge it is almost certain there will be a red card or two
-
Tomorrow is the start of a team with belief at home. 3-0 victory.
-
A 5-1 victory to give the Newcastle fans a nice memory of Villa Park for next season when they're in the Championship.
-
With Mike Dean in charge it is almost certain there will be a red card or two
Delph is my main concern for cards.
-
I think we need to stop favoring the left-side with our attacks so much. I know that Delph and Gabby are in form (plus Benteke's tendency to drift left), but getting the ball out to Lowton on the right was quite effective last year.
Considering around half of our attacks are going down the left at the moment, it is a little too predictable. Either Delph needs to play more centrally, in front of Westwood and El Ahmadi, or KEA needs to use the right hand side of the pitch more in one-twos with Lowton.
I expect that we should be able to win the possession stat in this game anyway, and with Newcastle probably setting up behind the ball, we are going to have to attack from all directions evenly.
-

In the week we had sold 32,500 ish were expecting in the region of 37k. They've sold out their away allocation.

Been a while since we had a game , bleak weather so a day for football - i reckon 38,000 plus .

Neither side good enough to win ? If we play anything like our first 3 games we will have more than enough to beat this poor newcastle team .
I expect to see Kozak maybe get a run towards the end and feel we will win 3-1.
-
Cold damp wet and grey weather. That will deplete on the day sales as people will stay home in the warm or venture no further than the nearest public house.
-
Big game today for us. Biggest of season I reckon, Awful Pre season at the toon if we fail to beat them where does it leave us?? might seem a tad early to panic but would hate ro see all the pre season hope and Arsenal result vanish within a month!!
Need a win..nothing else nothing more!!!

Can't see anything but a Villa win
-
There's a lot of optimism for us today which is great and understandable, but I think it'll be a bit tougher than a lot of people think. I can see Remy scoring for them but other than that, if we play our own game we should just have enough.
-
I don't think it is as cut and dried as people might think. The visitors are in turmoil off the field but not as much on it.
We are progressing nicely but have not reached a stage where any victory is routine. That ability to shoot ourselves in the foot has not been totally eradicated and it's this that blunts my confidence.
However, it is great that the game is far from predictable, that we are likely to attack, try to play good football and try to win.
With home advantage we should win, but we might not......
-
Like the fact how PL pointed out what a high level of training the squad had been through this week. The competition for places is the best so far in Lamberts reign, and I think he is quietly confident of a very good performance. The result ? Either a well battled 1-0 or a kick ass 3-4 - 0 feel a lot better with Okore at the back and the options we now have to change tactics with the players we now have available ......
-

Weather forecast for B6 (http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/forecast/aston-villa-fc#?tab=fiveDay&fcTime=1379113200) today is perfect for football - dry, slight breeze, not cold or too warm. Think we'll see well over 38000 - maybe even 40000 as Newcastle usually sell out their allocation.

4-0 VILLA

Assuming the gate is c. 38-40k, given we had 42k for the Pool match, i wonder if we will be breaking an attendance record for the first two home matches on any season. I cannot think we will have ever previously averaged 40+k for the first 2 home matches, certainly not for many many years, but I may be wrong.
-
My 8 year old son says Villa 1 - 0 Newcastle, Benteke to score. I think we'll concede early but go on to win. 3-1, Gabby, Tekkers, Vlaar.
-
As I missed the 'The Mighty Reds YNWA' game, it seems like a long time since being at VP. So it's like opening day for me. What are we waiting for? Pub time!
3-1 come on!!!!
-
Come on Villa we really need to win today.

Neither side good enough to win ? If we play anything like our first 3 games we will have more than enough to beat this poor newcastle team .
It's never that straightforward with us though, is it? Beating teams we're expected to lose against and losing (or drawing with) sides we should beat. It's what we do.
-
I will be there today believing that a win in this match would provide a significant sign that we really are through the topsy turvy time of the last 3 seasons. Villa ought to beat teams like theirs, get a home win, hey maybe even a keep a clean sheet. OK, I drifted into the realms of fantasy with that last bit.

We'll smash 'em.

Traffic really horrendous getting to villa park. Could be a bigger gate than I thought or maybe it's just general traffic.
-
Could today be the day for that most elusive of happenings, a clean sheet?
No.
3-2 win.
-
I've not read any of the rest of the thread yet so will be interested to see if others feel the same, but the way I see it is this.
Shocking lack of width.
Two blokes in Westwood and KEA doing EXACTLY the same job - not necessary esp at home.
Only Delph who can carry the ball and beat a man. And he nearly always receives the ball in his own half. - Pointless.
Lambert is either naive, stupid or both when it comes to tactical substitutions.
Luna is barely an upgrade on Bennett based on that performance.
We lack real know how, a consequence of either immature players or those that are not good enough - you decide which.
Yet again, movement non existant. It's surprising how easy it is to hide on a football pitch if you want to.
I really am struggling to find a positive. We were that bad. Even our goal was a toss of a coin effort.
Why oh why are the catering staff / management still unable to cope with standard numbers of customers at half time. Here's a clue geniuses, spend a day at the cricket or rugby to see how its done. Have the beers poured ready. Have a counter just for bottles. If you are expecting a crowd of 35000+ there is no excuse for the barrels to run out. Arrrgghh!!!
I need a drink now to calm down.
-
Fuck me I'm angrier than I thought.... I posted in the wrong thread...
-
I'm not that confident about this to be honest.
1-2 defeat.
Damn, didn't bet on it.
