Title: theme from an unmade silent movie
Post by: Desontheholte on September 09, 2013, 09:49:35 PM
Does anybody remember the villa coming out to this song every game in the early to mid 80s? I can always remember it being on when Nigel Spink was warming up! I dont no if it was played in the 70s as i only started going about 82 83 when i was 5 or 6. I think it would be a good idea to get them coming out to it again. It still sends shivers down my spine listening to it now! Be interesting to see what anyone else thinks?

Is this the song Tony Butler on brmb used to use to summon a villa goal ? Love this tune.
Always remember he played it in 78 when we are at the Nou Camp and sure enough Brian Little did the honours.

Great idea.

I've heard it played sporadically at Villa Park over the past few seasons, but not as the song the players come out to.  Would be much better than that bland FM rock song (think it is the Foo Fighters) that has been used recently.

Its a great ringtone, and speaking of Tone, I still keep a cassette of Butler demanding we get down on our prayer mat, [apol if not PC], chanting 'Hail Saunders, King of the Villa'',, as we payed away in Turkey, with the best ever Villa theme blasting out. Golden days, before kids, pre Ozzjim, Capri on the drive, Dennis, Sid et al on the pitch. Never replaced Saunders, maybe Lambert is nearest, so time to renew the 'Theme from an unmade silent movie'.

Remember getting up at 3 am for the world club final in Tokyo on brmb with butler in full flow - great times , and the European away nights were great on brmb - butler and George Gavin were at their peak - great days.

I taped all the BRMB European Cup away nights and the games in Barcelona and Tokyo. My dad wasn't impressed. Firstly he is a bluenose and secondly I took advantage of the fact that whoever had recorded their Dr Hook album collection onto blank cassettes for him didn't remove the tabs.

A very evocative tune.
Great memories of a brilliant decade to be a Villa fan 1972-1982. Third Division Champions to European Champions, a feat criminally overlooked then and still now. It will never be repeated.

To any of our fans from that time, Hurricaine Smith's tune is evocative of one of the greatest periods in the history of our club.
I've got a cassette tape featuring the highlights of Tony Butler's 1982 European Cup Final show, including George Gavin's commentary when we scored the winning goal and at the final whistle. I'd digitalise it and share it if I had the technological wherewithal.

Does anyone else remember them trying to keep people hooked/awake for the game in Tokyo by promising to replay George Gavin's commentary on Peter Withe's winner?

I'm too young for this but I do miss us playing Escape as our entrance music.  I think that sets the scene like no other song.

Butler reckons he played it first. Why, he never says.

If you listen to this music loud after a great Villa win, you go all funny. Goose bumps and welled up eyes. Or is that just me?

I prefer to hear it before a game. My eyes go a bit blurry and I see Gordon Cowans and Peter Withe running out to play for us. Oh, and I'm twelve again and we are champions of Europe.

No, but then it has pretty much the same effect on me whenever it's played.

A group of us wrote separate letters to the club years ago to ask if they could reinstate it as the music we run out to (I think it was Graham Taylor and Steve Stride that we wrote to).

Alas, no reply or acknowledgment.

I used to have it as a ring tone.

That would be right. I remember it kicked off in the early hours of a Sunday morning.

Didn't we get something like a half hour ITV 'special' at some point on the Sunday afternoon?

Yes - which was probably the equivalent to a normal main match on Star Soccer or MOTD.

What really annoyed me about that game was that either that weekend or the following Saturday on Football Focus there was a report on Liverpool playing somewhere in Africa. Villa playing in Tokyo was obviously a far bigger game but the BBC decided to follow Liverpool on safari (IIRC lots of air time to Grobbelaar with shots of big game in the background).

I tend to have a good memory when it comes to football, but for the life of me the only two of those finals I can remember is our game and Liverpool losing 3-0 to Zico's team Flamengo the year before. I know Forest lost one and Cloughie made a comment along the lines of the Japanese being able to make a radio or TV the size of a button but not being able to grow grass on a football pitch.
