Can't accuse us of not taking the League Cup seriously.

Much stronger team than I expected - although with no game for 17 days its fair enough.

Yup.

I'd have given Gabby a rest and played Tonev, but I've got no real complaints.

Agreed, would have given sylla a run too.

Going to up the prediction to 4-1, didn't expect to see that front three.

Good team selection.

I hated MON when he just threw in the rest of the squad to get a game. Players need to be integrated into the system, understand how we play week in, week out, otherwise how can you bring them in to the first team when you really need them. Not that MON ever thought about using the anybody except the same eleven every week.

I expect we'll see a few subs today but hopefully without changing the complete shape of the side.

5-1 Villa. Obviously no clean sheet.

I like the fact that he's giving the two CB another run-out together. And that Bacuna is playing RB, a role that looked more comfortable for him on Saturday. Giving Bennett a run-out makes sense as well.

I'd rather hope that Tonev, Sylla and Helenius get at least 40 minutes; and maybe also slot Herd in at Rb for a half, too.

I'd have put Sylla in for Westwood. I think Westood has been sluggish and that Sylla was the piece of the jigsaw that made us tick on our good run last year.

I disagree - I think it was the formation change rather than the personnel. I think that Delph pushed up further forward to do the job that Sylla did in those games, with El Ahmadi further back is more fluid.

Let's a decent lead early enough into the second half so we can get Benteke, Gabby and Delph off and give some other lads a run.

Would've preferred to perhaps see Helenius starting over Benteke and for Tonev to get a game, but I'll trust Lambert's judgement. I reckon tonight's a big night for Weimann, it'd be great for him to get a goal and lift his confidence as he's missed a few decent chances recently.

I think that's exactly what it is for Andi. He needs a little boost to his spirits. He's got into the right positions. Just needs one to go in

Must be easier on the nerves playing against a League One side in front of 22k than Liverpool in front of 42k.

Whenever we get a lower league side in the first round of this at home (which we have a lot in recent years), it's always about 22k or so.

They're definitely going to score at some point, almost certainly from a corner.

I agree our passing hasn't been up to much yet this season. There's plenty of mitigating circumstances - mostly the opposition. But would be good to get into the rhythm tonight.

Oh, yes, playing so poorly, we're two up.

Ha! We've struggled to string passes together, relying solely on the counter attack. We're playing at home, Chris Paulie. Rotherham have certainly created the better chances, had morew corners and sadly look far more fluid than we did for the first 30 minutes.

Are we almost the antithesis of where we were this time last season?

- dangerous in attack when we were blunt
- weak in possession when we passed it nicely (at times)
- better in defence when we were awful
- really hard to play against and pouncing on sloppy passing when we were very easy to play against

That's too simplistic I know. I'm hoping that its early season rustiness that means our passing isn't at it's best. Other sides seem similarly affected. The new footballs look like £2 balls from the garage which may not help.

That's nonsense, we've been a bit ropey with some misplaced passes and Pringle has looked pacey and direct for them but we're 2 up without really having to do that much, and our fitness will be better in the 2nd half, they've worked their balls off in defence and are still 2 down.

We are 2-0 up, and have looked much more the likely to score when going forward. I have watched from about the 20th minute, and thought we just looked like a Prem team doing their job against a weaker side. Contain, score when need/ the mistake is made. A bit like putting the bad ball away for 4, we just look like we have waited and hit them when they have gone to sleep.

It almost looks like we're treating it as a more serious friendly, where we're trying stuff like one touch lay offs and little flicks that they probably wouldn't try against Chelsea or the gruesome twosome from Manchester.

It's the kind off stuff we're going to have to master to really progress and develop the fabled "cutting edge" but developing the technique and confidence requires a bit more than a meaningless game against Crewe, and definitely doesn't benefit from an arse whipping in the league if we try it and fall apart.

We've had what, two attempts on goal? Two wonderful goals, accepted but in the first 30 minutes they were getting plenty of balls into the box, certainly looked more threatening than us. Last 15 minutes we've finally started to show some composure. I hope that's not too much to ask against lower league opposition or are we going to talk "total bollocks" like we did under MON and not allow to have a bad word said against him.

I'm just calling it as I see it.

I remember sitting and watching Tranmere at home at this stage last season. Incidentally, Delph scored our first in that game. We look so much better, obviously than 12 months ago-far more zip in our passing, we look so much more dangerous.

Here is the line up and BBC(Daily Mail...BBC would not load) match report from 12 months ago;

Guzan, Lichaj, Lowton, Baker, Stevens (Holman 67), Herd (Burke 76),Delph, Bannan, Ireland, Weimann (N'Zogbia 71), Bent.
Subs Not Used: Given, Delfouneso, Johnson, Williams.

Good Delph off. Excellent kid, just excellent. Should have walked into the england squad. Poor Roy.
Ozz, we don't really want our players in the Ingerland squad, do we? - just turns their head when they get involved in that malarky.

The recognition is good for the morale and confidence of the club as a whole though. It also says come to Villa, you will likely  get a game, and the England boss won't ignore you. But he does.

Very pleased for us that nobody has been chosen for England with all the tapping up that happens, but not as pleased for the players who must be wondering what they have to do. It's a big career notch on the CV.

Fair comment. The tapping up is pretty corrosive though, by all accounts.

Fortunately, Gabby seems to me inured to it. Not sure about the younger fellas though.

I hope all of our players get selected for their country and do really well. It means they are doing well for us. As for the tapping up, it's like these lads don't have agents, so that kind of stuff will happen national team or not. I happen to think that this group is somewhat more mature and without being completely naive also owe it to Lambert and the club for giving them a chance and believing in them. I think they are a little different to some of the players that have come before. Though there is no expressing what I feel about Downing.

Agree with you about Gabby.
The atmosphere around England teams seems quite rarefied. I could understand a younger player getting his head turned quite easily, given the wall to wall access that the other players, agents and media have to the squad.

Gabby has been absolutely top drawer since he first broke through. Excellent attitude work rate and a brilliant performer wherever called upon to play.   As he'd give England the flexibility of system we sorely lack I can't understand why he's not there.  Englands loss though....

I'd be surprised if anyone on this site would claim he's been a "top drawer" goalscorer. He's the new Emile Heskey in that department ;)

You should wash your mouth out comparing Gabby to Heskey. Gabby has scored some top goals, and some of our most important goals in the past 6 or 7 years.

Playing as a winger? I don't think so. 12 goals in 33 apps last year is a great return for a winger. its also 3 more than Heskey scored in 3 times as many games.
