Available Wednesday evening @6.45pm.
-
Steer, Vlaar, Okore, Bennett, Bacuna, El Ahmadi, Westwood, Agbonlahor, Delph, Benteke, Weimann.
-
Subs: Guzan, Clark, Helenius, Herd, Sylla, Tonev, Lowton.
-
Can't accuse us of not taking the League Cup seriously.
-
Much stronger team than I expected - although with no game for 17 days its fair enough.
-
Yup.
I'd have given Gabby a rest and played Tonev, but I've got no real complaints.
-

Agreed, would have given sylla a run too.
-
Going to up the prediction to 4-1, didn't expect to see that front three.
-
Good team selection.
I hated MON when he just threw in the rest of the squad to get a game. Players need to be integrated into the system, understand how we play week in, week out, otherwise how can you bring them in to the first team when you really need them. Not that MON ever thought about using the anybody except the same eleven every week.
I expect we'll see a few subs today but hopefully without changing the complete shape of the side.
5-1 Villa. Obviously no clean sheet.

I like the fact that he's giving the two CB another run-out together. And that Bacuna is playing RB, a role that looked more comfortable for him on Saturday. Giving Bennett a run-out makes sense as well.
I'd rather hope that Tonev, Sylla and Helenius get at least 40 minutes; and maybe also slot Herd in at Rb for a half, too.
-
I'd have put Sylla in for Westwood. I think Westood has been sluggish and that Sylla was the piece of the jigsaw that made us tick on our good run last year.
-
Sylla was the piece of the jigsaw that made us tick on our good run last year.
I disagree - I think it was the formation change rather than the personnel. I think that Delph pushed up further forward to do the job that Sylla did in those games, with El Ahmadi further back is more fluid.
-
Let's a decent lead early enough into the second half so we can get Benteke, Gabby and Delph off and give some other lads a run.
-
Would've preferred to perhaps see Helenius starting over Benteke and for Tonev to get a game, but I'll trust Lambert's judgement. I reckon tonight's a big night for Weimann, it'd be great for him to get a goal and lift his confidence as he's missed a few decent chances recently.
-
I think that's exactly what it is for Andi. He needs a little boost to his spirits. He's got into the right positions. Just needs one to go in

Maybe. It's good to have the options now and lots of competition.
-
Evening all.

To be fair to Weimann, he's probably hit them too cleanly just needs one to go in off his shins!
-
Villa Park looks half empty. Upper Trinity closed.
-
6-0 for me, 2 each for Benteke and Helenius, 1 for delph and 1 for andi.
-
SURELY a clean sheet tonight?????
-
Am amazed at that line up.
Here's hoping none of these lower league cloggers fancy making a name for themselves by taking Benteke out.

I only remember being really annoyed with MON for never ever rotating the squad
-
Their manager looks proper old school.
-
CORNALTY!
-
Yikes, how fat is Rotherham's manager!?
Corner to the northern chimps....
-
No commentary on AVTV?
-
Isn't that fat manager in some way a bit of a dodgy character?
-

They couldn't afford him.
-
Isn't that fat manager in some way a bit of a dodgy character?
He's got a vocabulary that Joe Kinnear would be proud of.
-
Bacuna looks a different player to last Saturday.
-
Bacuna looks a different player to last Saturday.
Playing against guff.

-
Very open game. Both teams going gung-ho.
-
I reckon he was just nervous
-
Bacuna looks a different player to last Saturday.
Playing against guff.
But he was giving the ball away under no discernible pressure on the weekend. I think it must just be nerves.
-

The guff are matching us at the moment.

Probably.
Must be easier on the nerves playing against a League One side in front of 22k than Liverpool in front of 42k.
-

The guff are matching us at the moment.
For the last three minutes at most, you gigantic drama queen.
-
Bloody hell. We're playing a very dangerous game.
-
Not playing great so far. Their striker should have scored then
-
Have to say our ball retention so far this season has been bunk!
-
Villa Park looks half empty. Upper Trinity closed.
22,000 apparently
Whenever we get a lower league side in the first round of this at home (which we have a lot in recent years), it's always about 22k or so.
-
We're still looking more than capable of some extremely quirky defending.
-
They're definitely going to score at some point, almost certainly from a corner.
I agree our passing hasn't been up to much yet this season. There's plenty of mitigating circumstances - mostly the opposition. But would be good to get into the rhythm tonight.
-
Ah so this is why we're fielding a strong side.
-
Getting too much joy down the right, Rotherham.
-
we're gonna get Pringled
-
They're definitely going to score at some point, almost certainly from a corner.
Indeed.
On the evidence thus far, there's no way we're going to keep a clean sheet this evening. If ever.
-
Wake up, Villa! Blimey!
-
Just got in, how are we playing?
-
What a goal!
-
That'll do Andi.
-
What a goal!!!!!!
-
Great strike Andy. Wow
-
SCREAMER!
-
Hahaha, BOOM! Weimann!
-
Quality finish. G'wan Andi lad.
-
He really needed that. Well done Andi
-
He did everything wrong until the shot.
Lovely goal lad.
-
pick that one out! Get inn Andi!
-
GET IN!
-
lovely strike, and getting it back from a poor pass to have the shot is the kind of lucky break he needed.
-
Nice. Right I'm going out for a few sherberts. When I get back in I'll pick this up from page 4. Come on Villa.
-
What a beauty!
That'll do Andi the power of good. No stopping him and us now.
-
Class goal.
-
You can keep your minstrels and M & Ms, I'll Revel in that goal.
-
Is KEA Brazilian?
-
You can keep your minstrels and M & Ms, I'll Revel in that goal.
Don't tell me. Jack P. Shepherd Woodward?
-
I really can't believe the difference in El Ahmadi this season. He's been excellent again, long may it continue.
Evening everyone, by the way!
-

Loving him too.

Indeed!

This is why Andi had to start. A confidence builder for him.

Looking good for the Geordies at Morecambe:
Three-time League Cup winner Mark Lawrenson on 5 live Sport
Morecambe 0-0 Newcastle
"If you just walked into this ground in the last couple of minutes you would not know which of these is the Premier League team..."
-
What were Bennett and Steer up to then?
-
Come on Villa, push on now. Another goal before half time will be much needed, we seem a little stodgy, Rotherham doing ok.
-
"If you just walked into this ground in the last couple of minutes you would not know which of these is the Premier League team..."
You could say the same about Villa Park for the first 30 minutes.
-
Daft challenge there from Delph, thought he'd cut that kind of shit out. Needless booking.
-

You think we're playing well?

-
I hope Lambert subs Delph. Tempers seem high and he is capable of getting a second. Play safe and sub him off.
-
Do Rumbelows Cup bookings carry forward to the league?
-

Martinez out!
-
get in
-
Always going in.

There's a difference between not playing particularly well and being unable to tell which is the League One side, though, Risso Mark.
Oh, yes, playing so poorly, we're two up.
-
Beast
-
Brilliant cross from Gabby and wonderful header from Benteke.
-
Great move, great cross from Gabby, great header, Get in Benteke!! 4 in 4 now.
-
The beast strikes again.
-
Gabby, tekkers. Too....... much......... power!!!!!!
-
Now thats the kind of cross Benteke will thrive on.
-
Rose like an Alaskan salmon. Great cross, great header.
-
Benteke is fast becoming one of the finest strikers I've ever seen play for us.
He really has got absolutely everything.
-
Dayum, Benteke!
-
Another class goal, great cross from Gabby and the header was spot on.
-
By the way, what was Bacuna doing right in front of their keeper when the header came in - he'll get a nose bleed just like Tony Moon :)
-
Benteke! The guy has everything!
-
Second Round of the Cup and we have a move a nearly full strength team out. Much better way to do a Cup Competition.
-
Benteke is unstoppable.
Any chance someone could PM me with a link, please?
-
Benteke is fast becoming one of the finest strikers I've ever seen play for us.
He really has got absolutely everything.
Very few people are going to dispute that position. I'm not old enough to recall clearly some of the other centre forwards in our history but this bloke is everything you could ever dream of if you were to describe the perfect player in that position. Really outstanding.
-
Second Round of the Cup and we have a move a nearly full strength team out. Much better way to do a Cup Competition.
give it a rest
-
Nah, I still want to see what the Gladiator, Newphew Bulgaria and forgotten man Herd can bring to the table.
-
Second Round of the Cup and we have a move a nearly full strength team out. Much better way to do a Cup Competition.
No league game for two and a half weeks though, that's got a lot to do with it.
-
Whens the draw?
-
I also wouldn't be surprised to see a change at half time.
-

Oh, yes, playing so poorly, we're two up.
Ha! We've struggled to string passes together, relying solely on the counter attack. We're playing at home, Chris Paulie. Rotherham have certainly created the better chances, had morew corners and sadly look far more fluid than we did for the first 30 minutes.
-
That Pringle looks a decent player.
Looks like he's playing for a move.
-
Whens the draw?
Next time Mcleish is a manager anywhere ;)
-
Not to tempt fate, but is the draw for the next round after the matches finish tonight?
-

They've had a bit of joy down Bennett's flank, but that's about it.
-
Benteke is unstoppable.

Can't find owt but Woodward on the wireless. Fuck that for a game of soldiers.
Apparently it's on Al Jazeera + 111
-

Looks like he's playing for a move.
I agree Paulie, he's looked excellent tonight. Very good on the ball, nice left foot. Sign him up Lambert?!
-
Crisp strike from pringle
-
Crisp strike from pringle

-
Once he pops he can't stop. His poor partner.
-
Crisp strike from pringle
He had a pop but it didn't stop going wide.
Yeah. That was tenuous.
-
Not to tempt fate, but is the draw for the next round after the matches finish tonight?
Yes and I am praying the game is played on Tuesday 24th at Villa Park so I can attend
-
Whens the draw?
Straight after the game on Sky
-
Okore has looked good again. This lad is gonna be class for us I'm certain.
-
Gabby could be on about 20 assists by the end of the season.
-
Bloody hell! No half time banter and puns from AVTV!? This free subscription sucks!!!
-
Whens the draw?
After the Morecambe - Newcastle game, live on Sky.
Blose at home is my guess.
-
Are we almost the antithesis of where we were this time last season?
- dangerous in attack when we were blunt
- weak in possession when we passed it nicely (at times)
- better in defence when we were awful
- really hard to play against and pouncing on sloppy passing when we were very easy to play against
That's too simplistic I know. I'm hoping that its early season rustiness that means our passing isn't at it's best. Other sides seem similarly affected. The new footballs look like £2 balls from the garage which may not help.
-
Crikey, we've done well to go into half time two up having been under the cosh for most of the match, and with them creating the best chances.
-

They've had a bit of joy down Bennett's flank, but that's about it.
I thought they moved the ball around well, created space and put plenty of balls into the area. Certainly looked like at team that knew what they were doing. They've also had a bit of joy down Bacuna's flank.
-
Second Round of the Cup and we have a nearly full strength team out. Much better way to do a Cup Competition.

What's up with you? What have I said wrong?
-
It's still worrying that we can't break them down when they pack defence. Liverpool or Rotherham, we lack the socalled cutting edge.
-

That's nonsense, we've been a bit ropey with some misplaced passes and Pringle has looked pacey and direct for them but we're 2 up without really having to do that much, and our fitness will be better in the 2nd half, they've worked their balls off in defence and are still 2 down.
-
Benteke is unstoppable.
Any chance someone could PM me with a link, please?
Cheers Smirker and ViD
-
We are 2-0 up, and have looked much more the likely to score when going forward. I have watched from about the 20th minute, and thought we just looked like a Prem team doing their job against a weaker side. Contain, score when need/ the mistake is made. A bit like putting the bad ball away for 4, we just look like we have waited and hit them when they have gone to sleep.
-
What are these better chances that Rotherham created?

No worries, I was wondering what I had said wrong! Ha ha, forgiven :)
-
It almost looks like we're treating it as a more serious friendly, where we're trying stuff like one touch lay offs and little flicks that they probably wouldn't try against Chelsea or the gruesome twosome from Manchester.
It's the kind off stuff we're going to have to master to really progress and develop the fabled "cutting edge" but developing the technique and confidence requires a bit more than a meaningless game against Crewe, and definitely doesn't benefit from an arse whipping in the league if we try it and fall apart.
-
Happy enough so far. Legion keeps touching me though. HELP!
-
There's some class bitch slapping going on tonight considering that we are 2-0 up. I hope to fuck no-one mentions Savo.
-
Wednesday night must me ... Woodw*nk night.
Evenin' all.
-
Benteke and Okore deep in conversation. Probably the 2 most valuable assets in the next 12 months.
-
What are these better chances that Rotherham created?
We've had what, two attempts on goal? Two wonderful goals, accepted but in the first 30 minutes they were getting plenty of balls into the box, certainly looked more threatening than us. Last 15 minutes we've finally started to show some composure. I hope that's not too much to ask against lower league opposition or are we going to talk "total bollocks" like we did under MON and not allow to have a bad word said against him.
I'm just calling it as I see it.
-
"As Steve Evans, the Rotherham manager waddles to the bench...."
-

I caught that. Very good.

Some would enjoy that, stop yer moanin.

Benteke and Okore deep in conversation. Probably the 2 most valuable assets in the next 12 months.
Regardless of form, they both look like they've just Got It, don't they? That thing which top players have, something about the way they make the game look easy. Terrific players.
-

So where were these better chances that you mentioned, then?
As for that MON point, come off it, I'm not having that for a second, you know that's rubbish.
-
Have we had a bad Dane? I can't think of one?
-
3rd to kill it off and then bring on the subs
-
Have we had a bad Dane? I can't think of one?
That Henrik Larsen, did he ever actually sign for us?
Not the dreadlocked striker, the big midfielder we used to get linked with all the time.
EDIT apparently he did, on loan for a year, no appearances.
-
Have we had a bad Dane? I can't think of one?
I can recall not always being happy with Sorensen
-
Have we had a bad Dane? I can't think of one?
Schmeichel...
-
Have we had a bad Dane? I can't think of one?
I can recall not always being happy with Sorensen
He said. I told him, that's just Toronto's way, he loves you really.
-
Hoooooooooo what a goal! What a goal that is!
-
Sorensen - decent keeper, unless time is gilding the memory somewhat.
Schmeichel - we were never going to be a swansong for him.
-
Got to be the strangest offside of the season!
I would have Delph off soon to make sure he is not sent, and stick on Helenius behind Tekkers.
Oh
What a goal that is! Stunning! Brilliant, brilliant move.
-
OMG
What a goal
-
great goal
-
Beautiful football.
-
What a fabulous goal. Stunning!!
-
Delighted that Delph has scored.
-
WHAT a goal.
-
Absolutely fucking beautiful build up!!!
-
Now that is football! What a move. What a goal!
-
Holy fuck! What a fucking goal that is!
-
Fantastic.
-
That's in the top ten.
-
That was sweet
-
That fucking goal ;D.
Sheer class.
-
SOMEONE UPLOAD A GIF OF THAT MOVE....I MISSED IT
-
Nice! Glad we kept Delph on instead of subbing him like the bedwetters were asking for.
;D
-
Let's hope that is the one that we were talking about that will break the dam on Delph goals from midfield.
Let's see Helenius and Tonev now.
-
They need to show the entire build up again now. Right now
-
Guzan - Okore - Delph - Benteke
It is such a good core.
-
It could be argued that we have scored some of the most incredible goals in the past 20 years over the last 16 months.
-
That goal was so good it's illegal in thirty-two states. And in Vanuatu.
-
Let's see Helenius and Tonev now.
Yes.
-
Nearly Westwood, nearly...
-
TS a bit behind. Gather our Delphie has scored! Woo hoo!
-
Westwood needs to add goals....I don't think he ever will
-
That goal really was a thing of beauty, that would be on infinite loop if a sky team scored it.
-
Poor ball by Gabster
-
Benteke and Okore deep in conversation. Probably the 2 most valuable assets in the next 12 months.
Yes I noticed that as they came out. I am sitting right opposite in lower Witton Lane. They care as it was about play.
-
Poor ball by Gabster
What???
-
Really was a beautiful movement for the goal, perfect football. Chuffed for Delph, deserves a goal for looking like a completely different player this season
-
Pleased Delph has a goal.
-
It could be argued that we have scored some of the most incredible goals in the past 20 years over the last 16 months.
This is what I kept arguing when people moaned about the season last term, yeah position and results awful, but some cracking, cracking football. 3 great ones tonight.
OOOOO
Nearly again Bennett.
Playing brilliantly.
Delph for Tonev now. No silly red cards needed!
-
It could be argued that we have scored some of the most incredible goals in the past 20 years over the last 16 months.
Yep, I remember whole seasons when we never even had an entry on MotD for goal of the month, let alone goal of the year.
-
Subs ready
-
Sylla! Come ON SON!
-
I remember sitting and watching Tranmere at home at this stage last season. Incidentally, Delph scored our first in that game. We look so much better, obviously than 12 months ago-far more zip in our passing, we look so much more dangerous.
Here is the line up and BBC(Daily Mail...BBC would not load) match report from 12 months ago;
Guzan, Lichaj, Lowton, Baker, Stevens (Holman 67), Herd (Burke 76),Delph, Bannan, Ireland, Weimann (N'Zogbia 71), Bent.
Subs Not Used: Given, Delfouneso, Johnson, Williams.

Poor ball by Gabster
What???
Plays it on the ground and its a first touch strike. He hit it poorly and westwood had to control it. Not a huge criticism, his play to get there in the first place was bloody good.
-
Good Delph off. Excellent kid, just excellent. Should have walked into the england squad. Poor Roy.
-
Good Delph off. Excellent kid, just excellent. Should have walked into the england squad. Poor Roy.
Agreed. Same with Gabby.
At least they'll be less tired for us.
-
Any news on when the draw for the 3rd Round is?
-
"Tiki taka with a brummie accent"
Not sure about that from the commentator, but I will take it
-
Good Delph off. Excellent kid, just excellent. Should have walked into the england squad. Poor Roy.
Ozz, we don't really want our players in the Ingerland squad, do we? - just turns their head when they get involved in that malarky.
-
Surely Gabby and Benteke for Helenius and Tonev now too.
-
Good Delph off. Excellent kid, just excellent. Should have walked into the england squad. Poor Roy.
It's a good thing. Now we're not a Nike club our players won't play for England. There'll be a few fringe players from Everton though...does mean that England full of Gerrards Rooneys & Cleverleys will be anything but clever.
-
Surely Gabby and Benteke for Helenius and Tonev now too.
Absolutely; surprised it hasn't happened yet.
-
Like to see Helenius and Tonev on now.
-
Good Delph off. Excellent kid, just excellent. Should have walked into the england squad. Poor Roy.
Ozz, we don't really want our players in the Ingerland squad, do we? - just turns their head when they get involved in that malarky.
The recognition is good for the morale and confidence of the club as a whole though. It also says come to Villa, you will likely get a game, and the England boss won't ignore you. But he does.

Appreciate that. Just always seems to turn heads.
-
Surely Gabby and Benteke for Helenius and Tonev now too.
Absolutely; surprised it hasn't happened yet.
Excellent - it's happening.
-
Like to see Helenius and Tonev on now.
You've got your wish!

Can you wish for me to win the lottery please?
-
Very pleased for us that nobody has been chosen for England with all the tapping up that happens, but not as pleased for the players who must be wondering what they have to do. It's a big career notch on the CV.
-
Let's see Helenius and Tonev now.
Yes.
Proof PL reads H&V! ;D
-
"I have a dream" references. Topical.
-
Helenius will score from a header now.
-
Any news on when the draw for the 3rd Round is?
Draw straight after the Morecambe - Newcastle game on Sky.
-
3 more goals and a clean sheet, please.

Fair comment. The tapping up is pretty corrosive though, by all accounts.
Fortunately, Gabby seems to me inured to it. Not sure about the younger fellas though.

I like Gabby, but he's nowhere near the England squad

Okore isn't moving too well

Lambert saw me waving at him with two fingers in the air!

I hope Tonev isn't going to be the new Holman

What? - the fact that I mentioned GA or that 'fornian Villa thinks he's nowhere near it?
-
I hope all of our players get selected for their country and do really well. It means they are doing well for us. As for the tapping up, it's like these lads don't have agents, so that kind of stuff will happen national team or not. I happen to think that this group is somewhat more mature and without being completely naive also owe it to Lambert and the club for giving them a chance and believing in them. I think they are a little different to some of the players that have come before. Though there is no expressing what I feel about Downing.
-
What the fuck was that Okore?

Monty I have granted your wish. Now don't forget to pick the right numbers.

Agree with you about Gabby.
The atmosphere around England teams seems quite rarefied. I could understand a younger player getting his head turned quite easily, given the wall to wall access that the other players, agents and media have to the squad.

Of course, that's what I've been doing wrong. It all makes sense now.

Gabby has been absolutely top drawer since he first broke through. Excellent attitude work rate and a brilliant performer wherever called upon to play. As he'd give England the flexibility of system we sorely lack I can't understand why he's not there. Englands loss though....
-
Erm... another quality forward option is still needed. Benteke, Gabby and Delph off and we unsurprisingly look about a million times less threatening.
-
HA HA HA Christ Tonev!

I'd be surprised if anyone on this site would claim he's been a "top drawer" goalscorer. He's the new Emile Heskey in that department ;)

Give it time Ozz. We've gone from players that are used to playing with each other to new players that need to figure shit out.
-
Wish Vlaar would stop thinking he's Bobby Moore
That step-over was pretty cool though.

You should wash your mouth out comparing Gabby to Heskey. Gabby has scored some top goals, and some of our most important goals in the past 6 or 7 years.
-

Playing as a winger? I don't think so. 12 goals in 33 apps last year is a great return for a winger. its also 3 more than Heskey scored in 3 times as many games.

Sylla's looked rusty.

You need to get out of the sun, lad.

Not a surprise really, just gotten back from injury.
-
Sylla's looked rusty.
He has. He was out for a couple of weeks wasn't he. Needs some games.
-
Westwood does wait too long sometimes, tries to slow things down at the wrong time, occasionally. A minor moan on his part
-
Its been a couple of years since we drawn Man Utd. Uh ohhh
-
I am not leaving I am staying for the clean sheet.
-
The key is that we keep a competitive clean sheet now. Just so we know we can do it
-
Might put the Newcastle game on after this. Looks like they're playing proper shat aye.

I assumed you'd been watching GBBO on iplayer given some of the guff you managed to come up with, Risso Mark.

Daft challenge there from Delph, thought he'd cut that kind of shit out. Needless booking.
Cut and paste This one into any match thread this season.
