4-2 home win. We'll score first, they'll equalise to give them hope and all that, and then we run away with it. They get a consolation in injury time.

Hope we go pretty strong for this. We haven't got another game for over two weeks and we could do with a convincing win to restore confidence after two, albeit narrow and undeserved defeats. I'd also like to see us get to a final in at least one of the cups this year. They'll come flying out the blocks early on, we'll score on the counter, and run out 4-1 winners. I hope.

I think we should go reasonably strong given the upcoming break, but rest some of our players who've played most games and give game time to new signings and players who've missed a lot of pre-season.

Something like

Steer - bacuna Okore Clark Bennett - sylla Gardner KEA - Tonev gabby - helenius

Yep, with a two week break coming up, I can't see us making that many changes.  Leave out anyone with a knock or those that are overly tired, but apart from that we should go full strength.

Subs, Vlaar, Guzan, Luna, Gardner, Herd, Gabby, Wiemann

Although I can understand the 'no game for two weeks' argument about not needing too many changes, that also needs to be balanced with the fact that a lot of these have just played 3 tough games and he'll also want to keep those who've not played too much interested.

Steer
Lowton-Donacien-Okore-Luna (unless Bennet is fit)
Sylla-Westwood-Gardner
Tonev-Helenius-Gabby

What's all this call for playing a diamond formation? Not for me thanks.

I'd stick with the three up top.

I'm a bit uneasy that we'll struggle to get up for this game. As long as we do, and play with real tempo, I think we'll be ok.

There's quite a lot of potential cupsets going on tonight so we shouldn't be complacent. Keep about 5-6 of the regular starters to date in, and tell helenius and Tonev this is their big chance to am show what they can do

I am all for giving a few of the fringe players a run out, but with no game for 2 and a alf weeks, would keep the nucleus of the team. Luna apparently has a knock so Bennett is likely to play.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Rotherham United Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Ad@m on August 27, 2013, 10:53:30 PM
I'd keep a minimum of 6 from the team that started against Liverpool.

Probably keep in Lowton, Vlaar,  Westwood, Delph, Gabby and Andi. I'd also be tempted to start with Okore to allow him to start to build up an understanding with Vlaar.

Throw in Steer, Bennett, Tonev and Helenius and we should have too much for Rotherham.

Narrow 2-1 win I think.

Logical to give Helenius and Tonev starts in this and I'd keep Weimann in as he needs a goal. Would imagine Sylla will start aswell.

Gabby and Benteke on the bench just in case so Lambert can play his 4 forwards upfront again against lower league teams!

No excuses we need to win this one. No messing about with team selection. The team that played Liverpool should play as after tonight they have about 2 months off before the next game.
For me it has to be  Guzan, Bacuna, Vlaar, Okore, Luna, Westwood, Delph, KEA, Tonev, Benteke, Weimann.

Lambert's got a lots of things to weight-up with tonight's team selection. Yes we want to win well, and yes we don't have a game for a while afterwards, but this is also a great opportunity to give the likes of Tonev and Helenius their first starts, and also to give players like Herd valuable game time.

I also have a sneaky feeling that Delph will play and be skipper tonight, as a way of rewarding his recent form.

Anyway no point having a squad if we don't know if they are good enought to fill in when required so I would go

Steer
Bacuna, Okore, Clark, Bennett
Sylla, Herd, Gardner
Tonev, Helenius, Weimann

Lambert won't though.

That's a good shout, though if Baker is fit, I'd be tempted to play him at centre-back and move Clark into the midfield holding position at the expense of Herd.

Good shout.  I'd love to see him again and he can provide good crosses for Helenius.  He was on the bench for the Malaga game so there is a chance although Lambert might put him on the left with Tonev on the right. The only thing I think we can take for certain is that Helenius will start. If so he will need wide players.

Why don't you want a Villa player fit?

Because I don't want him to be able to play tonight, what other reason could there be?

In my opinion he is clearly not good enough. Obviously I'd prefer him just not to be picked, but I'm not 100% confident that'll happen. The sooner Albrighton leaves for a club that he could do well at, someone like Walsall, the better for him and us.

According to Rotherham, they've sold over 3,000 tickets for tonight.

I'll be delighted if Albrighton starts. The lad has a lot to offer, the sooner he can have a sustained injury free period the better. Just look at Delph

Is Albrighton fit yet?

Let's hope not.

Why don't you want a Villa player fit?

Because I don't want him to be able to play tonight, what other reason could there be?

You don't like him so you want him injured. Charming.

Not rating him is fine. Wishing him injured so he dose'nt play is idiotic.

Albrighton showed great promise under houllier but since then a mixture of injuries and poor form has seen him slip out of the frame - I'm surprised as i really hoped for him to become a vital player in the team , probably needs to drop down a division and regain some confidence and form.

I apologise. I forgot hoping he's not fit confirms that I hope he's broken his leg and in no way could it mean that I hope he's not match fit for tonight's game as I'd rather he didn't play. Blimey. Wouldn't you rather be offering your opinion on tonight's team selection/score etc. rather than picking up on one flippant comment that really doesn't mean anything?

And assuming I want him injured is presumptuous, and, dare I say it, idiotic.

Has anyone managed to buy a ticket online this afternoon? It doesn't seem to be available through eticketing. There are other games to purchase tickets for, but not tonights. Does this mean only tickets in store/on the door now?

It does come across that way though CBBB. If you don't want him fit to face a Division 3 club at home, which you also already mentioned was level, then it's not a great leap to assume you won't want him fit to feature in any league games.

T'view from t'Dales.

Quote
STEVE EVANS is no under no illusions as to the task awaiting Rotherham United if they are to spring a cup shock on their first visit to Villa Park in over 40 years.

The Millers manager has likened the challenge in front of his side to scaling Ben Nevis in trainers.

Striker Danny Nardiello will sit out the game due to a one-match ban after his dismissal for two bookable offences in the weekend draw with Shrewsbury.

Evans revealed that the forward was almost in tears in the dressing room on Saturday after realising he had let his team-mates down.

For the rest of his playing colleagues, it is a rare place in the national limelight with Evans and his side determined to make the most of it.

Evans and his Villa counterpart Paul Lambert share an affinity with Celtic, but that is where the similarities end between the clubs.

Evans, who has revealed he is chasing two or three signings before the transfer window closes, including a player currently in the Scottish Premier League, said of tonight’s test, said: “It will be like climbing Ben Nevis in our training shoes.

“Football will always be a game of shock results, every season in football history that has happened and that will continue for sure.

“Villa are in superb form this season, they have top players, they have lots of youth and energy plus – in my opinion – they also have a top manager in Paul Lambert.

“We do not kid ourselves that this match will be tough and at times we might not see a lot of the ball, so when we do we have to make sure we use our time with it effectively.”

Evans, who masterminded several cup shocks in his time as Crawley manager, added: “We will be taking somewhere in the region of four thousand supporters to Villa Park.

“I know they will give the team the best vocal backing we could get.

“When we arrive at Villa Park we do so as a very proud squad of men, that is the minimum criteria I want from all of us when we leave to head back to Rotherham.

“I want all of us to enjoy and embrace the occasion.

“But we must deliver a huge performance if we are to cause a cup upset, and I believe we can.”

Last six games: Aston Villa LLWDLW, Rotherham DWDWDW.

Last time: Aston Villa 1 Rotherham 2; October 9, 1971; Division Three.

Referee: S Hooper (Wiltshire).

I'm guessing the limited online has passed so it's buy at the ground or shop in town now.

I guess Lambert wants to win the game early then bring subs on then?  :-\

Bit worried we are playing almost the same team, they must be knackered.

This is true, but we should have too much for them and we don't have another game for a while, so it should be fine. It's a mix of giving people gametime - Steer, Bennett - and trying to win the game.

Yeah I guess so. Benteke in particular it seems to me should have bene rested. Doesnt he have some more international football coming up soon?

Well the Bradford and Tranmere cloggers didn't. No reason to think the Rotherham ones want to.
