Available Wednesday night @9.30pm.

We should have taken at least a point but a combination of Cech, and a corrupt ref and linesman deny us.
Villa are fucking back!
-
Brilliant display.
Fuck off Kevin Friend.
Top 6 this year.
-
Gutted!! All the hard work they put in to be cheated.
-
That needs a public inquiry headed by a high court judge.
-
The fact that I'm gutted we haven't got anything away at the favourites for the title says it all. The fucking paid off ref won the game for Chelski! We were absolutely excellent again - Benteke quality, midfield three absolutely superb. So pleased with how we played, and that makes cheating Ivanovic and Terry (surprise surprise) even harder to take! We're back - Top 10 this season! UTV
-
Great performance, extremely unlucky, bent referee. There was only going to be one outcome tonight, but we can be proud of ourselves. Now to scalp the scousers.
-
Looked like a decent performance. Okore looks pretty handy.
Play like that against Liverpool and we should be looking at a fairly comfortable three points.
-
Champions League qualification looks ever more likely. Probably going to have to do it the hard way, though.
Forget Hawkeye, how about we get competent officials?
-
So very, very proud of our boys. To say we were fucking robbed is the understatement of the year. ****** Ref, you utter wanker for not doing your job. First the blatant elbow, then the penalty. Lambert is going to go fucking mental.
I cannot wait for the next game now
-
We are a very decent team.
We have lost tonight to a referee. That is not right.
-
I want to smash the back out of Liverpool more than ever now.
-
We did ourselves proud. The ref was a f*ck*ng disgrace.
-
We are looking like a football club again...
-
The goal was a disgrace. The handball? I'd have probably felt annoyed if it had been given against us, not sure if Terry can really get his hand out of the way there, and his arm's up because he's falling not because he's blocking.
Still. We're in these games aren't we? Roll on 'Pool.
-
Well we were royally fucked by the ref tonight. Absolute bullshit
However my god we played well, after the first 15 mins.
-
Delph was brilliant.
-
If anyone thinks all referees are impartial and play both teams by the book tonight is exhibit A that it is bollocks. You cannot accidently get so many decisions wrong in one game.
-
We can be very, very proud of that display. Now, onto Saturday.
-
Cast iron penalty but Weimann should have put away his first chance. My Spanish commentator screamed pennnnnnaaaaaalllty!
Very very positive.
-
Great effort and commitment tonight hugely impressed with the way we gave Chelsea a real tough game , Delph was superb and Okore impressed when he came on but well done to all the team.
If we continue the season as we have started and it will be be a season to remember -certainly no reason we cant finish top 8 from what ive seen so far- well done to all , players staff and fans.
-
Andy Gray, Richard Keys and Tony Dorigo all baffled completely by it apparently.
-
Proud to be Villa.
-
If we play like we have the first 2 games we can really get up that table and who knows push for a Europa spot....with luck.
Mind you I thought we were poor the first half, too deep and not holding on to the ball....saying that we created the better chances, Gabby unlucky with a side foot curler outside the box which would of been a worldy, and Weimann with 2 Volleys straight at Cech.
Okore did very well coming on...
-
All this 'it was the referee's fault' makes us sound quite a lot like the Arsenal fans we were laughing at a couple of days ago.
A couple of decisions went against us tonight, there will be another game this season when a couple of decisions will go in our favour.
-
Delph was brilliant.
Outstanding. Third name on the teamsheet at the moment.
-
Guzan carded after the whistle for having a go at the ref - good man.
A lot of positive to take from that and unlucky we lost. Delph is really coming into his own, Okore looks quality and I think we're going to have a good season. 8-0 massacre to a 2-1 robbery is a sign things are on the up.
-

Still. We're in these games aren't we? Roll on 'Pool.
Watch it again. No way is an arm naturally there. It is a penalty in every different interpretation of the laws of the game. The ref has cheated, he is 5 yards away with a clear view.
-
We were mugged tonight. Superb second half. Thought Delph was outstanding again and Okore looked solid once he got into the game.
Very unlucky indeed.
-
It's not hard to believe the refs can get it wrong ffs.
Leave this shit to the scousers.
-
Fantastic performance.
-

Fuck me he was falling from 3 foot.Penalty all day long.
-
There should seriously be an inquest into Kevin Friend after this. Disgrace
-
Christ we've had some horrendous decisions against Chelsea over the last few years, back to the cup semi final in 2010. More tonight.
In a strange way though I'm not too concerned as I felt we had the run of the decisions on Saturday.
Now the thing for me is this; I don't want a flat, feeling sorry for ourselves performance on Saturday as from that second half performance, I reckon that standard is good enough to beat Liverpool.
I said at 1-1 and when we were dominating we'd still lose it as this is the horrible way football works. Just shows aswell you have to take the chances if you get them as Chelsea created very little, think they only had 3 shots on target and got their first corner of the game in the 90th minute, we pissed all over them in the second half and lost and yet were very poor in the first half and went in level. Work that one out.
Just want a good performance against Liverpool. I'm expecting a point minimum from that game. A win and 6/9 points would be a brilliant start.
-
Can take solace from the fact that we should have deservedly got a point as opposed to an 8-0 thrashing but those key decisions by an awful ref leave a sour taste in the mouth - Ivanovic should have been off and we should have had a stonewall penalty - and to be fair Cech made some cracking saves. Corrupt referees favouring the 'big' club yet again
-
Said as much to my son. Joke. He books him for an elbow so he saw the incident, when it should have been straight red.
Absolutely gutted, but pleased we preformed so well
Let the Jose love in commence. Makes me wanna puke
-

I will watch it again. To be honest, even though I have my doubts about that particular handball, if Terry had picked it up and run for the tryline Friend still wouldn't have given it.
-
A significantly better performance than last year.
Looking a little more organised at the back, soaking up the majority of the pressure. Our midfield trio look disciplined and Okore slotted in comfortably.
Going forward, we continue to create chances and had it not been for Cech and/or "Friend", we would have taken something out of the game.
-
All this 'it was the referee's fault' makes us sound quite a lot like the Arsenal fans we were laughing at a couple of days ago.

That's fine Dave and you're going to be proved right, but until that happens we can only talk about the now. Tonight the decisions weren't even marginal. They had a big impact on the result. One thing bleating when it's 7-0 and they make it 8, but if it's a tight game every decision is a big one. Those were decisions a ref in PL should have been better in making. He didn't do that.
-
We are looking like a football club again...
Yes Fergal mate. And a bloody good one.
Good times ahead - may no mistake.
-
I'm so angry. I wish I didn't care as much as I do :(
-
I don't agree with the suggestion that the match was fixed.
However, I do think that the top 4 teams get refs giving them the majority of decisions. Rather than working on seeing if a ball is over the line or not, how about ensuring matches a reffed fairly? It rarely is when a side plays a top 4 team.
-
Cannot fault the lads. Very unfortunate. Thought we were well worth a point. Sadly the ref today didn't have the balls that the guy on saturday did. Ivanovic could have gone, and we should have had a pen.
These early lapses at the back are frustrating because we've tended to defend well for the majority of the rest of both games. I thought we handled Chelski's movement very well.
Delph and KEA were good today. Westwood wasn't at his best again sadly. Wiemann struggled to get in the game and really should have put away at least one of his decent chances. At this level you have to tuck them away.
Benteke was a threat again. I did worry about him getting wound up again. They clearly targeted him.
Fullbacks did well. Vlaar had a solid game, though he did leave the Chelsea player onside for their first. Okore did well when he came on.
Proud of the lads. We need to take this level into the "easier" games. I'm looking forward to playing some bottom half teams, but we've proved we can give anyone a real game. Last season we might have fallen apart conceding early goals in games like this.
Would you bet against a top 8 finish?
Bring on Liverpool!
-
Okore and Vlaar looked the most comfortable our centre halves have in 12 months for me.
-
Proud is the only word that can describe that performance. After the result last year we could have quite easily crumbled going down so early on. However we battled, showed grit and got back into the game.
You could argue Ivanovic should have gone and Terry handled the ball. There is no argument Ivanovic was offside. We were beaten by poor officials today. Did we deserve a win? Probably not but we were definitely good enough for a point.
We have moved mountains in 9 months since that defeat and I for one am loving it.
Up the Villa.
(we've lost and I feel really positive, that has to be a good sign)
-
The goal was a disgrace. The handball? I'd have probably felt annoyed if it had been given against us, not sure if Terry can really get his hand out of the way there, and his arm's up because he's falling not because he's blocking.
The arm is high in the air. Its diverting the ball from dropping in the dangerarea in front of goal. That a freaking basketball block anywhere but on SB!
-
Paul Lambert in less than 18 months has restored our spirit and pride. He'll be a bear in the post match interview. He's becoming one of us and you can see how passionate he gets. He understands
-
All this 'it was the referee's fault' makes us sound quite a lot like the Arsenal fans we were laughing at a couple of days ago.
A couple of decisions went against us tonight, there will be another game this season when a couple of decisions will go in our favour.
We had a few shockers tonight though. They had 1, which was Vlaar not going off. They were just whinging because the rules were applied against them. We're steaming because 3 or 4 times the rules were ignored.
-

Good, balanced comment.
If we can take all the positives from these first two games, we'll have a good season. I'll go with that, particularly since so many people on here thought we'd struggle to get 3-4 points out of the first three games.
Let's give a really good account of ourselves on Saturday ...
-

The ref was right with his calls at the weekend apart from maybe not sending Vlaar off. To compare the two is night and day Dave.
-
We should not behave like Arse did on saturday, but we are totally justified in questioning so many of those refereeing decisions.
Despite all of those, the lads did us and themselves proud tonight.
What a joy to be watching a game and not expecting the inevitable goal against us like previous years. Now there is belief that we can do something ourselves.
Of course, it is very, very early days, but I truly believe we will go from strength to strength and will be the surprise package this year.
-
We were excellent. In the second half we played superbly. The midfield is so compact and tight. The defense looks good. Upfront we are looking good bar Weman who looks off the pace a bit. However we look like a totally different team. Robbed of a point at least but there is plenty to look forward to this season.
The Villa are back.
-
Okore and Vlaar looked the most comfortable our centre halves have in 12 months for me.
Ozz, Vlaar needed a quality CB to play with. I think Vlaar was overburdened by Clark and Baker who will both improve. Okore is quality and Vlaar will improve alongside him.
-
I can't wait for Saturday. We are a football club to be reckoned with again.
-

When the decision in question is to award an offside goal, from a player who shouldn't have been on the pitch makes it especially hard to take.
Fuck the ref though, let's talk about our performance. It was excellent.
-
Sometimes i hate this game. We lost to 12 men
Great performance and we are definitely on the right track.
-
Ivanovic should not have been on the pitch - definite fore armed smash with a clenched fist into Benteke's upper body/chin.
Linesman how did you not see the offside Ivanovic started in an offside position and when Lampard took free kick he was still offside.
Penalty - how could Friend not see that....certainly no friend of Villa's.
-

Fuck me he was falling from 3 foot.Penalty all day long.
Indeed and we had 2 less obvious handballs given against us. Lack of consistency or just plain bias.
-
What. A. Joke.
Winner scored by a player who had two chances to be sent off from a free-kick that never was. And then we don't get a blatant penalty.
Sorry, and I'm going to sound like a child, but it's not fair. Referees consistently favour the top 4 teams and something needs to be done about it. Sod whether a ball crossed the line or not, there are more important things to be dealing with.
-
Feeling very good about the future after these 2 games -the good times are back .
-

Pretty much sums it up.
-
Stuff the penalty. Weimann missed an easy chance to put us in the lead!
Frankly I dont think we need to worry about anybody.
-
As happy as I am that we are playing 100% better than last season, that we look capable of playing any team in this league, that we look like we have a belief as a team...I am gutted. A point was at the very least deserved. The ref needs to be fired. Ivanovic should never have been on the pitch to score an offside goal, and to be denied a pen at the end was a disgrace. However, well played boys. Things will only get better. UTV!
-
Gutted for the obvious reasons but I am so proud of the lads. They've grown pubes and everything this year. We look a totally different proposition
-
Happy enough with that performance. Dont want to look like a sad arse nal fan by whining about the ref. On to Liverpool.
-
Fair play to Jose - was that hard the question from interviewer. ''That was hard, that is what i've missed'' ''They should have got a point''
-
Despite the first half domination, I reckon with the clear cut chances and the ref nightmare, we should have won tonight.
We are going to have one hell of a season.
Havent felt this positive for many many years.
-

I thought it was harsh to book Koscienly aswell for the first pen as it was obviously a genuine attempt to win the ball. So obviously helped get him sent off and it is always easier playing 10 men when you're leading and closing out a game.
-
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho: "That was very hard. I missed that about the Premier League! Normally matches in the Bernabeu we win every match very comfortable, this was very hard, it's what I like. I told Paul Lambert that they deserve a point, it wouldn't be unfair.
"They fought a lot. They have their style which is not my style. They have a special player with special qualities with Christian Benteke, they transport the ball to your half and he is a big boy who makes a lot of fouls. It's difficult. They are very dangerous in counter-attack as well."

Hmm, back-handed compliments from Mou:
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho: "That was very hard. I missed that about the Premier League! Normally matches in the Bernabeu we win every match very comfortable, this was very hard, it's what I like. I told Paul Lambert that they deserve a point, it wouldn't be unfair.

What does he mean 'style that's not my style'? We played the same game as his Inter or Chelsea Mk I sides going to better teams - except with less rotational fouling and more balls.
-
Would imagine Lamberts interview will be interesting.
-
Not often you get a game and afterwards you could say you would have preferred Phil Dowd as ref.
-
One offside and a nailed on pen. Oh well we go again. Ithought the midfield 3 were superb. KEA and Delph were brilliant and snuffed out Chelsea's midfield prompting. ialso thought Vlaar was immense tonight.
Interesting that Michael Owen said that if aVilla player had done what Ivanovic had done it would have been red. Also, you see Ivanovic putting his hand into a fist and forearm smashed benteke.
Still itsgood totalk about defeats at the clubs who will be vying for the title andpoord decisions costing us rather than poor Villa play.
we go again. We've still played only two so will get better. Allsummer the question was whether Delph would be able to keep the end of lastseason's form up. Well he looks even better.
Guzan - 6 - Maybe could have palmed their first to the side. Not much else to do.
Lowton - 6 - Still looks a little leggy to me.
Luna - 6 - Did okay.
Vlaar - 7 - always looked dominant at the back
clark - 6 -Looking more assured than last season.
KEA- 7 - Unlucky withthe booking.
Delph - 8 - Tidy, combative, skillful, pacy.
Westwood - 7 - kept ticking over
Gabby - 6 - Came alive oncein the first half and rarely in the 2nd half
weimann - 6 - Nearly acored a couple. But that's it.He'll get better.
Benteke - 7 - great goal. get better 2nd half.Stillmore to come.
Subs:
Okore - 6 - He'll be a good'um
Tonev - Good to see him get a run.
Anyway Mourinho said we deserved a point. Michael Owen also thought it was a nailed on pen, that Ivanovic was offside AND should have been sent off. I can't be seeing it through claret&blue specs then.
-
More from Jose Mourinho, this time on Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert's protests that Branislav Ivanovic should have been sent off for a clash with Christian Benteke before heading home Chelsea's winner: "Benteke makes a lot of fouls and the opponent who plays against him has to make a lot of fouls.
"Paul Lambert reminds me of me at his age. Now I complain with some decisions, at his age I complained at every decision. Paul complains at every decision, I was the same. Benteke and Ivanivic, they are two giants, it was 50/50."
-
Counter-attacking is Mourinho's style. He's not the free-flowing fucker he makes out.

Not sending Ivanovic off was no worse than not sending Benteke off for his equivalent elbow in May. Presumably because Benteke wasn't sent off for that means the referee was biased in our favour last season?
The offside was pretty marginal, offside yes, but it's not as if someone who is half a foot offside is always going to be seen as that. We're talking about a few inches.
The Terry penalty, if the referee decides that he's falling (which he looked to be to me) then it's going to be difficult for it to be deliberate handball. I'd have given it by I can see why he didn't.
It's a shame and the decisions didn't go for us, but it's hardly South Korea 2002. All this stuff about corruption and match-fixing just makes people sound like a bunch of danlanzas.

I would have said not so different Jose , see Drogba

All he his doing there is trying to say we are dirty to deflect the fact it was a red card.
-
Rather than serious Juve style match rigging, I think it's more a case that most of the refs are reluctant to give potentially controversial decisions against the fancied sides, as they know it will be analysed to death. When Mourinho, or Wenger complain it carries more weight. Unfortunately. If Lambert complains, big deal. When in doubt, give the Sky lot the benefit of the doubt.
It probably doesn't help when you have sycophants like Halsey, Clattenburg and Friend wanting to be mates with the likes of Stevie G, Lamps and JT either, mind. In Kevin Friend's case, it's probably because he stinks of piss and has got no friends.
-
I'm not actually that angry, I'm st so happy at how good my team is now. UTV
-
Jose likes lambert and us. He is being nice. lets move on. Spank the bastards when they come to Villa Park :)
-
Well I'm surprised the ref was able to blow his whistle at all. Considering he had Mourinhos cock in his mouth for 90 minutes.
We really were excellent. With an organization and solid shape that was absent last season. I can only assume Lamberts new coaches have had influence there?
Anyway, if Chelsea are champions-elect, on that showing top 6 is not beyond us.
Roll on Saturday, I can't wait.
-
Stan on TS has lost his impartiality - he is going mental.
Stan is going totally mad. They just said it’s the old big club small club game. Stan was shouting BIG CLUB SMALL CLUB, VILLA HAVE WON THE EUROPEAN CUP, THE EUROPEAN CUP!
He is on fire tonight, so one sided.

Referee bottled the big decisions he had to make in the game. It is all very well making soft bookings for technical things but when you fail to take action on key matters, then you should not be officiating at this level.
Ivanovic should have been given a straight red and even then, he could should have been booked for one of the two fouls afterwards. If he hadn't of been booked already, the ref would have booked him. Ramirez in the first half took Delph (I think) really late and nothing and yet when KEA blocks late, he gets booked.
I could go on but what's the point. The top teams seem to have matches refereed in their favour and that is it.
By the way, we played very well in the 2nd half after digging in in the 1st. The three in the middle worked together extremely well and closed down space.
-
Floodlight robbery!
-
In two games we've upset the established order, so of course now we'll be tagged 'The New Leeds' or some shite by the pack of twats fawning over Mourinhos' every word.
-
I really feel for them....we worked so hard to stop Chelsea flowing and we did it well I thought. I can't remember Brad making a save.
-
I can't wait for Saturday. We are a football club to be reckoned with again.
This. Smash the Scousers now.
-
All this 'it was the referee's fault' makes us sound quite a lot like the Arsenal fans we were laughing at a couple of days ago.
A couple of decisions went against us tonight, there will be another game this season when a couple of decisions will go in our favour.
The ref was right with his calls at the weekend apart from maybe not sending Vlaar off. To compare the two is night and day Dave.
Frankly I don't care who I sound like. You seem to forget Benteke was sent off for a high foot in that game, Ivanovic for the same thing tonight had a free kick given to him and Benteke booked 5 minutes after his yellow, so that argument holds no water at all.
An no one will convince me that those incidents happen the other way round at VP and the decisions stay the same. Some clubs are clearly favoured by the powers that be.
Pretty marginal yes but on a static line for a free kick it is the easiest to spot, so should be picked up and wasn't - open play it is marginal, on a set play it is negligent to not spot it.
As for the penalty, if you can see why that is given beyond 90th minute at the Bridge, then you are a significantly more enlightened man than I.
-
More from Jose Mourinho, this time on Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert's protests that Branislav Ivanovic should have been sent off for a clash with Christian Benteke before heading home Chelsea's winner: "Benteke makes a lot of fouls and the opponent who plays against him has to make a lot of fouls.
"Paul Lambert reminds me of me at his age. Now I complain with some decisions, at his age I complained at every decision. Paul complains at every decision, I was the same. Benteke and Ivanivic, they are two giants, it was 50/50."
Patronising bast*rd
in that case Lambert out ;D
-
Floodlight robbery!
Illegal betting syndicates in Far East imo.
-
How fucking great is it that after the first 2 matches away at Arsenal and Chavski we are pissed off that we only have 3 points, rather than the 4 or 6 we could/should have.
Strap in boys (and girls), it's gonna be a helluva ride this season.
-

and he gives westwood a yellow after the Ivanovic yellow. disgraceful

Anger....subsiding.
Liverpool next up, it's about time we did these twats at Villa Park.
-
End of the day, we lost a game and realistically 1 point. I think even if Andi scores one of his chances, we'd have sat back afterwards and conceded anyway.
Not too fussed again as we have 3 points from two games, that's 1 more than two battling draws at the Emirates and Stamford Bridge. And if there's one thing that's held us back over the last 20 years, it's this obsession we have with drawing games, thinking it's great when we string an 8 or 9 unbeaten run even though 6 of those games have been drawn.
Another good thing is we've got two of our toughest away games out of the way and we've still got a positive goal difference. Generally teams that have positive goal differences end up in the top half.
All in all, we certainly have the right man in charge for the task ahead this season.
-
Think Westwoods bookng was for dissent
-
Mourinho is lauded for that kind of crap. Let's suppose it had been Villa getting the rub of the green in those calls. Let's see how charming and mischievous he'd sound then.
I hate whining about bad decisions, and the big calls were terrible decisions. But there's a gap of league games after Liverpool and we need to go into it knowing we gave 110% in the cause of getting points. We've done that in our opening away games, now it's time to put in a home performance to make everyone sit up and take notice. If we get the win on Saturday, I can easily put tonight behind me.
-
End of the day, we lost a game and realistically 1 point. I think even if Andi scores one of his chances, we'd have sat back afterwards and conceded anyway.
And what have you seen of Lambert recently that we sit back after scoring?
-
thought we were great again. deserved a point.
the midfield 3 were fantastic, special praise for delph.
keep the heads up, and bring on the scousers.
-

I could agree with Mourinho and even concede that we didnt get the pen but the ref didnt treat the two teams the same when he had similar decisions to make.
-
End of the day, we lost a game and realistically 1 point. I think even if Andi scores one of his chances, we'd have sat back afterwards and conceded anyway.
And what have you seen of Lambert recently that we sit back after scoring?
Have we ever sat back under Lambert?

You are spot on Soccer, but tonight I will be bitter.
Tomorrow, I will be apprehensive. One of my biggest annoyances with Villa is not backing up displays like the last couple with similar at home. And Liverpool looked decent last week.
-
lambert - flying elbow , its a sent off
stonewall hand ball
im not saying too much .I will get into trouble. we were outstanding
-
The game is rigged. This ain't gonna change. Onto Saturday.
-
Ultimately, we played very well, and were unlucky to lose, in a match we got twatted 8-0 in last season, at a team who are very possibly going to win the league.
I'd rather we got robbed and lost at Chelsea away than somewhere you'd think we were more likely to get something.
We can go into the next game full of confidence.
-
Haven't seen any of the match yet but from what I've heard we played very well indeed and were very unlucky not to get at least a point. Even though we've lost I still feel very positive about this season, and I certainly didn't feel this way just a week ago.
Good stuff, Villa, lets keep it up and stuff the scousers on Saturday!
-
As for the penalty, if you can see why that is given beyond 90th minute at the Bridge, then you are a significantly more enlightened man than I.
You've clearly made your mind up that everyone is against us and that there is some shadowy conspiracy going on, so I'm not going to bother trying to change your mind.
But I assume that this conspiracy that means we would never get an injury time penalty at Chelsea was set up sometime after 2007 (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/7157291.stm)?

Some quotes from the Shed End forum:
Very poor today.
Have to say Villa were robbed.
No red card for Ivanovic, no penalty on Terry's handball.
Cech is my MOTM.
Happy, Villa played very well and we managed to get 3 points. Plus, we're 2 games in.
That was a stone wall penalty for Villa.
They managed to create better chances but we scored the goals. Cech MOTM.
We were lucky to get the three points, Villa were really good tonight. They could get top half this year
Good villa side...3 points is what matters...
Overall, a poor showing. Have to say this win leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. Ivans goal looked to be offside and that was a clear penalty for Villa.
He's not a Chelsea player but I thought Delph was outstanding for Villa, he came out on top against our boys in the centre of the pitch
First off Villa are a promising young team with a
cracking striker the manager is up & coming as well. The optimism on here leading up was based on what exactly a freak thrashing last season ?? Certainly not on watching them after that game.
Their goal was just sheer brilliance by Benteke that couldn't be stopped by anyone and we looked significantly better when Lukaku came on, i'm happy with the 3 points and I don't think United will be as close a game as that
-
Well thats out of the way and every player in Villa will hold their heads high and look forward to Liverpool at Villa Park.
Didnt lose by 8. Benteke is Top goalscorer with 3 in 2 games.
Okore and Vlaar was so much better then any fullback pairing in 2 years at least.
Looks strong on every position. True it hasnt been Weimann best 2 games, and he has been missing some of our best chances today.
Nevertheless, he is there to create them chances. Few more games and hopefully he find the form.
Best news so far in my opinion is Delphs improvement...and thats on top of the still great finish he had last season.
-
Lambo bigging up Fabian in his interview....and Okore coming in.

Cheeky fuck!
Cheating fuck.
I know I'll get flamed for this, but I'm glad he's back. He's good value and knows how to play the press. I also think we have got the best up and coming manager in Eurpoe and if he ends up like Jose I'll be delighted - especially with the success. Surely the scousers will suffer as a result now......
-
I am still angry and I will be in the morning.Kevin Friend has form against us and should never ref a game we are playing in again.I can take a ref making mistakes, but I can't take cheating.

I like him a lot, too. He makes it all more interesting.
There's no point moaning about backhanded compliments. That's what he does.
-
I think stays fit, judging on that tonight, it will take Clark and Baker a long time to get back in. Luna and Lowton did well too IMO. And the defenders were not at fault for either goal really, with KEA and Benteke realistically to blame.
-
Stan on TS has lost his impartiality - he is going mental.
He has form with Chelsea fans.
-
That's the benchmark lads, 36 games at that level and we'll have a great season.
UTV!
-
The defeat down there last year, quite arguably cost us 9 points.
This year we can justifiably feel aggrieved not to have a point, and full of confidence for the season ahead.
We go again.
-

No conspiracy just cheating.
-
I like him a lot, too. He makes it all more interesting.
There's no point moaning about backhanded compliments. That's what he does.
It's the same as Ferguson. He must have offered more compliments about us under O'Neill then any opposition manager ever did. Nearly always after we'd just rolled over for another 3-0 defeat.
If we'd held out for a point, I'm sure Mourinho wouldn't have been so complimentary.
-
Hey ho. These things even themselves out. We probably got the rub of the green on Saturday so won't get too narked.
This team has got the potential to be up there with the sides of 89/90 and 95/96 - the surprise package of the season. I loved both those sides and I'm quickly falling in love with this one...
-
he is and he is right
Im pissed off . awful ref ..

Ferguson was frequently very complimentary about teams who weren't a threat to him.
-
Here is Paul Lambert's take on that incident involving Christian Benteke and Branislav Ivanovic, and also John Terry's handball in the Chelsea area, which went unpunished: "It is easy to come on here and have sour grapes but it is there for everybody to see. He clearly elbowed Christian Benteke, it was a sending off.
"The penalty was a penalty, everybody saw that. He missed two huge moments. "How can you miss that magnitude of a decision? It is beyond me.

They did and passed the ball well but in reality scored one goal against one of the worst away teams in the premier league and very easily could've just drawn it.
Aside from Coutinho and Sturridge, their overall 11 looks mediocre to me. Mingolet conceded 6 last time he turned up at VP and we're laughing with Kolo Toure at CB as he's been past it since he left Arsenal.
It's a fixture where we should be getting at least a point, we beat them last season and should've drawn the VP game after all.
Fatigue could be a problem but if one of the midfielders Is feeling it, bring in Sylla. Same with Weimann, bring in Tonev. We have some decent squad options now and Lambert certainly won't run this first 11 into the ground unlike MON.

I remember how in the 90's he used to always heap praise on us after beating us, how great we were to watch etc then we had 2 or 3 draws up there and he moaned how negative we were. The whisky nosed twunt.
-
on the radio they are saying the smaller clubs dont get the desisions
Villa - smaller club ? FUCK OFF

It is down to the ref on the day. There is the odd one like Sat that refs it as it is. Most ref it as a "make sure team x win".
Tonight was cheating. Simple as that.

HERES THE BOMB..
WE MUST SIGN LAMBERT UP ON THE CONTRACT WE HAD SAUNDERS ON
-

heres the goals

In that game, we had a player sent off for not committing a foul in the penalty area.
-
Definite red - offside for header - could have been a penalty late on .
Gutted - but let's take the positives . We are far better equipped for this season - it will be hugely enjoyable .
-
At best it is a mix of bias towards the Sky4 and incompetence. Neither of which should be acceptable.
-
The PL need Chelsea to win to keep their'worldwide' fans happy.
-
I was very, very impressed with Okore and Delph tonight.
Needless to say, I am absolutely furious about the referee. I don't think there is a conspiracy against us. I just think the ref was incompetent and a bottler.
-
At best it is a mix of bias towards the Sky4 and incompetence. Neither of which should be acceptable.
Exactly.

delph - what a player he has become ;)

Yep and when Swansea were one of the few teams who dared to play well and take a point off United, he went on and on and on about Williams apparently trying to kill RVP.
It's another one of those things I don't take notice of and can't be bothered to get worked up and type about.
-
The PL need Chelsea to win to keep their'worldwide' fans happy.
17,000 when I went to Stamford Bridge in successive seasons 93-94. I friggin hate their new supporters and the way they act like they're always been the dogs bollocks.
-

I'd also say it's harder not to give a penalty for stopping a goal with your hand on the goal line than it was for the Terry handball today.
-
Mourinho you are a ******
-
Mixed feelings really. Don't think the referee was as bad as people are making out.
However I knew it was a penalty before even seeing the replay when the camera spanned to Terry's face.
-
Didnt Chelsea get a penalty at the weekend for something similar to Terry's catch today?
-
End of the day, we lost a game and realistically 1 point. I think even if Andi scores one of his chances, we'd have sat back afterwards and conceded anyway.
And what have you seen of Lambert recently that we sit back after scoring?
Have we ever sat back under Lambert?
Exactly, that attitude cost us about 5 goals at Chelsea last season when he went out trying to attack in the second half rather then trying to limit the damage. This year it will probably cost us a European place but with the players now in place and with belief, it will definitely be a better ride.
-
I hope Kevin Friend gets the Flu for Christmas. The crooked, scuttering, monkey felching spunk trumpet.
-
The PL need Chelsea to win to keep their'worldwide' fans happy.
Sorry but they will disappear when the money does wankers.
Chelsea don't have any football fans they went when the shed went
-
Well done for those now calming down.
Im still f in livid
If he had missed the elbow fine. It happens. But he saw the bloody foul and then gave a yellow. I would love to hear his reason for a yellow and not a red. Unbelievable
The penalty. Well many Villa players appealed which is often a sign it should have been given
.
-
H&V favourite Lawro sticking up for us in light of Mourinho's comments.
-
delph - what a player he has become ;)
Listening to a radio station that covered the game here and they cannot stop raving about him
-
I hope Kevin Friend gets the Flu for Christmas. The crooked, scuttering, monkey felching spunk trumpet.
You don't like him then?
-
Mixed feelings really. Don't think the referee was as bad as people are making out.

You been on the glue?
-
Delph and Gabby HAVE to be in the next England squad.
-
Next game will be just as tough as this for me. Liverpool looked very good in their opening game and they'll be going all out against us on Saturday, especially as they have manure after us.
Gutted about tonight but i expected nothing so it is what it is!
-
What will you learn from this ahead of the game against Yanited?
"Man United is not Villa. They don't play like that, *shudder* ".
-
I hope Kevin Friend gets the Flu for Christmas. The crooked, scuttering, monkey felching spunk trumpet.
I'm a bit scared that you know he's into monkey felching. Is there something you aren't telling us Maz?
-
Mixed feelings about this one, for the all the reasons that everyone else has mentioned. We look bloody good at the moment despite the result. Keep this up and our season should be very different to the last.
-
delph - what a player he has become ;)
Listening to a radio station that covered the game here and they cannot stop raving about him
Which is probably more than a radio station here is doing.

Not sitting back but we would inevitably have dropped deeper, y'know like conceding late when we were winning at WBA and Everton to name two examples.
-
My biggest concern is how tired will some of the players be for the Liverpool game after these 2 games. I think we may need to change a couple of things around Saturday.
-
I hope Kevin Friend gets the Flu for Christmas. The crooked, scuttering, monkey felching spunk trumpet.
First smile since the final whistle, thanks PWS.
Claps.
I'm a bit scared that you know he's into monkey felching. Is there something you aren't telling us Maz?

Mourinho you are a c***
Hear, hear!
-
I am still angry and I will be in the morning.Kevin Friend has form against us and should never ref a game we are playing in again.I can take a ref making mistakes, but I can't take cheating.
The Albion fans said the same on Saturday and I laughed at them. I just think he is poor.
-
As I don't have Sky it will be interesting to hear from those who do watch the extended highlights how bad the decisions really were. And also what the pundits say about them. So please let us Skyless wankers know.
-
Mourinho you are a c***
Hear, hear!
+1
-
Somebody call the police. There's been a robbery.
-
Didn't see or hear the match live due to some other stuff going on. Caught the last 3 minutes on 5Live. They were praising Villa performance immensely including Lawro who said Villa have proved over these two matches that they are a very good team. Appears we didn't have the run of decisions tonight and on saturday we did. Well done Lambert and the boys.
Having said that I hate the patronising Fergie like comments from Mourinho. A day will come when they won't be doing that and I believe that's not too far away! UTV.
-
I said to my son after Ramirez hacked down Delph and didnt get booked that Vlaar standing next to the ref, should have reminded him that he should also be lenient when it came to keeping our players out of the book. The point being to remind the ref he had cocked up and he owed us one. A quiet word in the refs ear is what Terry has been successfully doing for years
-

Aye, I remember a game a few years back against Sunderland where we got a few calls in our favour from Friend. Don't think he's got it in for us, he's just shit.
-
Not sitting back but we would inevitably have dropped deeper, y'know like conceding late when we were winning at WBA and Everton to name two examples.
Rather than us being pinned back, both of those were cornalties though weren't they?
Swansea as well.
-
I was listening to sky tv and they didnt even mention that Ivanovic should probably be in the dressing room when he scored.
To be fair to Tawksprout , they were going mad when he scored and both the decisions but stan C was in the back ground losing it ,

No conspiracy just cheating.
I wouldnt even say there was cheating involved, but bear in mind that every referee has just seen their colleague dropped after making controversial calls against a high profile side that have subsequently proved to be 100% CORRECT!
What message does that send out?
I honestly dont think refs favour any side in any game, but I do believe they have to be that little bit more 'certain' when giving decisions against a top 4 club because the repercussions are so much greater if they get anything wrong.
After all, do you honestly think Anthony Taylor would be sat on his arse this weekend if he had made those exact same decisions in a game involving Hull and Cardiff.?

Delph and Gabby HAVE to be in the next England squad.

You are spot on Soccer, but tonight I will be bitter.
Tomorrow, I will be apprehensive. One of my biggest annoyances with Villa is not backing up displays like the last couple with similar at home. And Liverpool looked decent last week.
Thing is ozz we did follow it up performance wise. usually we bottle the 'follow-up' game. Not the Lambert Villa. I am disappointed but not angry. i think its because I can still vividly feel the last few seasons. This feels different and although we will lose a few along the way, I'd expect us to win a fair few games this season. Against anybody.
we'll lose 4-0 on Saturday now, obviously.
-
Whoever called for Delph to be called up for England can stop that kind of talk. The moment they get him up to Burton is the moment the ground starts to be laid for the inevitable move to Manchester.
-
As I don't have Sky it will be interesting to hear from those who do watch the extended highlights how bad the decisions really were. And also what the pundits say about them. So please let us Skyless wankers know.
Depends who they have on,Butch 'Im not drunk officer' Wilkins or some other ex Chelsea player who gets paid by Chelsea tv.

You have such a poetic way with words. Brilliant.
-
My biggest concern is how tired will some of the players be for the Liverpool game after these 2 games. I think we may need to change a couple of things around Saturday.
Eh? So wake up tomorrow feeling shagged and get a team of sport masseurs working on them. Friday, so light training and TACTICS. Saturday, driven to VP. Hardly like the IronMan schedule.
-
Just on my way back to brum from the match, great support again from the 1500+ that travelled, going down there we would of been happy with a point. Thought delph had another good game in midfield and was probably my man of the match for us. A clear penalty from where I was in the upper tier. Gutted.
-
Chelsea benefit from brown envelope syndrome, refs like brown envelopes, there was NO way we would win or even draw, I expect even the special one was embarrassed, sadly most top sport is corrupt.
,
-
Havent read all the thread but in short Delph was immense, the ref bottled it and we're head and shoulders above last season. They know they got out of jail and so does the rest of the country.
-

I think the current team will be different in that respect. They are young and growing as individuals together. That's what Lambert is trying to create and I don't think the likes of Delph, Lowton, westwood, and without doubt Gabby, want to do anything but play for Lambert, their team-mates, and Villa at this moment in time.

delph - what a player he has become ;)
Listening to a radio station that covered the game here and they cannot stop raving about him
Which is probably more than a radio station here is doing.
I can hear Franks now "well the bubble has burst after just one win"
-
On my way back.
I will start with the good. Fabian Delph. The lad looked immense and bossed the midfield second half. The defence stood up and limited them one meaningful attempt on target all game.
The bad. Kevin Friend. Ivanovich should have walked. The ****** should have walked. Terry's handball. Fuck me. Disgrace.
We were the better side second half. No ifs or buts a point was the least we deserved.

its cos we gave them a game. had we rolled over for them he'd have been even more patronising and full of praise for us. Fergie used to do it all the time when they beat us and when we drew with them he'd suddenly hate us.

We go again.

was at the back of the Holte in 76 when we whacked them 5-1 ohh for a repeat !!

As I don't have Sky it will be interesting to hear from those who do watch the extended highlights how bad the decisions really were. And also what the pundits say about them. So please let us Skyless wankers know.
In all honesty, PWS, they were some of the worst decisions I have seen. Clear forearm thrown by Ivanovic. Friend was standing directly behind the incident so may not have seen how obvious a forearm smash it was. Ivanovic's offside for the goal was marginal but I'd say a foot or so - definitely offside. The Terry handball was so obvious - he pretty well batted the ball out of the area! Friend's view was in no way obscured - he was looking straight at the incident. The only thing you might say is that Terry was perhaps being held down a bit under the challenge. However, even Michael Owen (who I felt was pretty negative towards us before the game) said afterwards that had the forearm been thrown by a Villa player rather than Ivanovic, it's highly likely he would have been red-carded. He also said he didn't think that the challenge on Terry was any worse than what normally goes on at most set pieces and for him it was a stone-wall penalty.
Whilst it may seem bitter, when it's absolutely clear-cut that the ref's decisions were utterly woeful it's hard to take. I'll get over it by tomorrow, but right now, I'm fuming at the injustice of it. And before anyone says we got all the decisions against the Arse, video analysis has pretty well shown that the ref got those major "contentious" decisions right. Probably the only one where we were fortunate was Vlaar not getting a second yellow for that block on Rosicky (I think it was). Apart from that, I don't think what went in our favour on Saturday and what went against us tonight are comparable.
I was utterly proud of how we played tonight, however, and I am optimistic for the coming season. I hope that we can back up one more time on Saturday and give Liverpoo a beating.
One final thought: Mourinho is a c**t. What he did very cleverly in his post-match interview was to ramble on about how we're just long-ball merchants and pump it up to Benteke and hit teams on the break, whilst his Chavski team want to win with quality and technical ability rather than just "graft", not allowing the interviewer to ask him the "hard" questions. At times, we do play like that, but it is disingenuous of him to assert that we are just a bunch of cloggers like Stoke used to be/maybe still are. Again, fair play to Owen who said that he absolutely disagreed with "The Retarded One's" assertion that we are just a long-ball team by citing the quality of the build up for our goal.

Time for Archer. I'm in the Dangerzone.

Last game of the season three seasons ago. 1-0 Downing. You have to go back to 1998 and a Collymore double for the last one before that.

1-0 Daley
4-2 Saunders 2 Atkinson Parker

Agree with that. Lambert is really building something special there. We can only look on with envy at the moment, at least until this ownership situation is sorted out and someone better than Clark takes over.

Just stepped off a boat following a fantastic night cruise on Dalyan river Turkey to be immediately greeted with the sight of Terry handling the ball and then us not been given a penalty Even the locals had their arms in the air I've now been forced to crack open my emergency bottle of wine back at the Villa
-
If my memory is accurate Clattenburg reffed the 5-1 derby game - pushed a Small Heath player away from confronting Ashley Young in the build up to the first goal I think.
-
That's the first time since I think Gregory that I've felt positive even after the result (a loss to be pedantic) we were solid out there and Benteke is our Bale - goals from nowhere. Lambert is now mixing it with the managers and I love it. Mourinhos a sly fox saying he reminds him of him but he wouldn't pick that reference if there wasn't something there.

The PL need Chelsea to win to keep their'worldwide' fans happy.
If other clubs won the league they'd get worldwide fans too - I'm sure the Premier League would rather have loads of fans for all the clubs. The problem with the Premier League is that it's too easy for clubs to buy success. Seeing what's happened at Chelsea these past fifteen years really winds me up and hearing a gloryhunting Cockney Red on the radio refer to them as "bigger" than Villa makes me puke.

Just looking at the game now. Anyone who says we got the referees decisions on Saturday can rest assured the cnut even things up tonight. What a fuckin disgraceful refereeing performance - sending off and it wasnt even a free kick for their winner. I fucking hate the Sky 4.

That is the main issue for some saying about take these because of Saturday and last seasons match, each decision he made in that 4 minute period before and after the goal was just totally wrong. No red card, not a foul for the freekick, offside for the player scoring and then not even sending off for a second yellow for the next foul Ivanovic made. The equivalent evening up on Saturday would have been, Gabby punching a player, fouling both players as he ran through and then Chesney actually getting the ball quite easily and still having the pen given and being sent off.

Because prize money is given out depending on where you finish in the league?

I will post who the most TV/prize money last season I think Liverpool were 3rd in the money table, give me a minute.
It's on a file I can't open but Liverpool were joint 2nd with 11,525,944 despite finishing 7th.It's not just worldwide Sky show more of the so called top 5 to get ratings to sell advertising. It's been the same since live football started on TV,ITV/BBC are just as bad.
-
Despite some dodgy decisions - we're in better shape than o'neill and his mega spending. Obviously we might lose the next 6 games but I think we're looking good. I've followed Villa since 1976 and this just has a feeling about it that somethings growing. I hope so.
-
Just watched the highlights. I expected to feel that comments about the key decisions had been overblown. They hadn't. Both blatant. I can forgive the offside.
No sense in talking of a conspiracy. Benteke initially got away with similar twice last year.
We look so much better organised defensively and in midfield this year.
And delph and gabby? Wow. I really thought from what I saw that delph looked fantastic. I thought Westwood looked better than comments might suggest.
We really need to get delph signed up on a new contract.
Tonev, okore, sylla in for Clark, Weimann and KEA at the weekend I reckon.
Really good performance. Can't see us being anywhere near the relegation zone this year

Had to miss it again tonight :-( all sounds very positive, I mist say that we've played arsenal & Chelsea away and got 3 points and that's not bad, onwards and upwards
-
I posted in the match thread that even the commentators over here were questioning the impartiality of the ref.
They'd also got Jesper Gronkjær on as a pundit at the end.
"Chelsea needed the referee's help to get the win" was his verdict.
His other noteworthy comment which I mostly agree with, was that we had the chances to make the refereeing decisions irrelevant and that is what might stop us competing at the top end of the table.
Respect and kudos to the 1500 or so hardy souls that made the trip. Pretty much all your could hear of the croud was you.
Oh and another vote for Delph as man of the match, closely followed by Karim. Those two worked their knackers off and looked good with the ball at feet.

As far as refs go, it's pretty evident that refs who give decisions against the top teams find themselves relegated. They look after the big clubs & they get to referee at the top level. You could argue a case for and against all the decisions tonight bar one, Terry's handball, which was as blatant as they come.
With regard to the special one, he is an ideal match for Chelsea as he has no class either, his sneaky poke in the eye of the coach at Barcelona says more about him than I every could.
We have come so far in the last 8 months & special mention to Delph who is finally showing what a class act he is.

I believe it's because the referees are human beings at the end of the day. When refereeing a game at Old Trafford, Anfield, or knowing that a man with as much pull as Mourinho or, while he was still active, especially Ferguson has got to play on their minds. I can acknowledge this trend that big clubs are getting the bigger decisions, but I refuse to believe that it's because of some widespread undercover conspiracy, but more of a result of extraneous variables that affect the mentality of those making decisions. On a side note, the only incidents getting coverage whenever this topic rears it's ugly head are those going against little clubs, and thus those are the ones we hear about, making it seem like there are no decisions going against 'big' clubs.

Match report from the Beeb (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/7344139.stm)
-
Just saw an interview with Morono on the Beeb. He was emphasising how PL complained about EVERY decision - not just the big ones but EVERY decision. Before he came back to the prem I'd almost forgotten what a self-absorbed cnut he was - that interview reminded me.
-
I remember hearing an interview with Graham Poll last year and he was asked if he'd, say, referee a game at Old Trafford differently than elsewhere.
His reply was that of course he would, he wouldn't want Ferguson in his ear, matches there are more important etc etc - effectively, every single possible answer to that question which would make you want to never bother going to a football match again, he gave.
It was disgraceful.
They're supposed to apply the laws, not interpret them to suit the surroundings.

Chipsticks 'extraneous variables that affect the mentality of those making decisions' has made me puke on my keyboard.
-
I'd love to know what would have happened if
Suarez, Barton, Rooney or Terry had made that for arm smash on any player.
The first 2 would probably have been arrested on the spot.

Okey dokey.

My biggest concern is how tired will some of the players be for the Liverpool game after these 2 games. I think we may need to change a couple of things around Saturday.
Sylla is fit. Okore will come in for Clark - he got a cut forehead
Agree and we are picking up injuries already Baker Clark Sylla. I can see us losing vs them.
-

I agree, could be worth getting Bacuna in for one of the 3 midfielders and Tonev perhaps for Weimann or Gabby at least.
-
I thought we played better tonight than we did on Saturday. I sat there at times thinking to myself what a really good team we looked. Delph for me was the best player on the pitch. Chelsea had 3 shots on target. Mourinho had to make two subs to try and win them the match.
I'm disappointed we lost but i'm really really encouraged.
-
I think Ahmadi should remain in the team for weekend, he's earned his place with some good performances. I don't want to see us too gung-ho too early and them getting an early goal.
Brilliant performance tonight and I'm really proud of the lads. We made good chances against their first choice defence tonight.
Mourinho is quite right that we aren't like them. We don't have any racist, cheating, cowardly tackling ****** in our team.
Well played Villa, keep it up.
Nick

Didn't go to the game, but listened on the radio and then watched the extended highlights. As much as the 50/50 decisions went for us on Saturday they went against us tonight. Ivanovic should have been sent off for the elbow, the same player looked marginally offside for his goal (bad foul for Vlaar to give away in the build up to it) and Terry's handball could well have been given, but I don't think it was a stonewall decision.
Benteke's finish was quality and Weimann had a couple of good chances, but they weren't exactly straightforward and he forced Cech into making good saves both times. All in all, nice to see us going to places like Arsenal and Chelsea and not just rolling over like we have done in the last couple of seasons.
-
Just a word about Weimann. Keep going son. He's in his second proper season and he's going to have little patches where the chances aren't going in. The important thing is he's getting into those positions and the goals will come. In fact, I'll put money on him bagging one this weekend.

Agree TV. Didn't think the two chances he had tonight were particularly easy and he did hit the target both times.
-
I thought the second he should have scored but he did really well with the first to get the connection he did.

Seriously? Gabby has been instrumental in 3 of the 4 goals we've scored.

I think we might need to make a couple of earlier changes, but there is no way we should change the side unless they look jaded in training. This early in the season, with a break after this game too, I doubt they will.

We have the LC as well on Weds. 4 games in 11 days. While I don't mind using the squad I don't want us to go with a total B team in the cup as I want us to win something!
I agree, training should tell Lambert if anyone is feeling the effects, worth remembering as well that some had international games last week. Much as we scoff about them playing games at times, we don't want to risk anyone getting a niggly injury as they are feeling the games.
-
Not sure if it's already been reported but big worry for Saturday is Benteke is still in the changing room picking Suarez's teeth out of his throat.
-
Paul Lambert gave positive injury feedback on Ciaran Clark on the final whistle at Chelsea.
Clark had to come off after 43 minutes at Stamford Bridge after a clash with Oscar.
The 23-year-old centre-half suffered a big cut on his forehead and had to be replaced by Jores Okore.
Lambert revealed after the game that Clark should be fine for the game with Liverpool on Saturday.
He said: "Ciaran has a nasty gash on his forehead that has required some stitches.
"But hopefully he will be okay for the weekend."
Lambert was happy with the performance of Okore as he came on for his competitive debut for Villa.
But the manager was thrilled with the entire team.
He insists the mood is upbeat despite the defeat as they get set for the Reds clash on Saturday.
He added: "Jores was terrific when he came on.
"The feeling is really good. The dressing room has no reason one bit to be down. We will get a lot of credit for that.
"We were exceptional, fantastic. I am proud of them.
"They have bags of energy. I thought the performance on Saturday was outstanding and it was outstanding again at Chelsea.
"We are getting better and better with every game. It's a new team and a new era.
"It's a tough turnaround now but the momentum is there."
-
Just arrived in Mexico Cityhaving after a pensive 11 hour flight and made straight for the Internet at Marriot Business Centre , disappointed to see the lads have lost but by all accounts they did themselves and us , proud . Its good to have a reason to believe and so far this season I,m more than a just a believer . The passion is definitely back ...................Godzvilla !
-
Just back.
And still fucking fuming - how could Friend not give the penalty?
The assault by Ivanovic on CB was a straight red - except for the ref.
What a c**t!
If I had to go in the trenches with him I'd shove him in front and stick a bayonet up his arse!
So proud of the team's performance and our support again!
UTV!
-
I think definitely the refs in this country need Fucking off, I love the European refs, they might not get 100% of the decisions correct but they take no shit and there is no bias, how many tines have we heard promoted teams say they are called number 8 but Gerrard was called Stevie. Of course Arsenal fans will probably will say it's justice but they are ****** as well
-
Not sure if it's already been reported but big worry for Saturday is Benteke is still in the changing room picking Suarez's teeth out of his throat.
He will still be suspended happily.
-
Just watched the BBC interview with Mourinho.
What a twat!
He says that all Villa did was Guzan lumped it up to Benteke and this caused them problems. But Villa "did not play".
Ivanovic's fore-arm smash on CB was what always goes on and a yellow was "more than enough".
Terry's handball was nothing because Terry was pushed.
So, he's being a bit of his own ref here, right?
He then has a go at Lambert for contesting every decision and being immature (like the great Jose was 10 yrs ago) and trying to be the referee.
He says a lot about this....deflecting attention away from the fact they got out of jail thanks to two shit decisions by a disgrace of a referee.
He's good for the EPL apparently.
He's good for shitty publicity and headlines.
Oh yeah....that's the EPL, innit?
-
We've now lost 4 in a row against this lot. Which is a record amount of losses since we won 1-3 in 2011, are we really getting any better?
-

Yes but so are they. They just throw money at it.
-
Friend looked like a rabbit in the headlights when dealing with the elbow. He face just had "oh shit what do I do now" written all over it. Same for the pen...he bottled them pure and simple. I can only hope that when he watches the game he will know just how much he bottled it and how inept he made himself look..
Had he made those decisions against a top 4 side...I have no doubt he would be "rested" this weekend. As for Jose, am pleased he is back. Just take it as a huge compliment with the comments he gave. He knows he got out of jail.
The team were immense...we deserved more, much more. Hope we can carry that on at home on Saturday.
-
Ba was clearly offside when ball was put through to him fir 1st goal. I think that was what Andy Gray was trying to argue on Al Jazeera.
How old does Dorigo look!!
-
There is no big conspiracy here but referees certainly think twice when giving anything marginal against a "Sky-profile" team and it's hard not to have sympathy.
Give the decision against Villa or Norwich and it will be shrugged off, but as has been mentioned before, a referee runs the risk of being hung out to dry via the media and his career can be negatively affected. This is probably what occurred to Friend last night, hard to swallow for us maybe but a fact of life in a game that has sold it's soul to the highest bidder.
Sky are happy, the PL are happy, Chelsea are happy.
We are fuming, but in the grand scheme of things, no-one else gives a fuck.
-
Thought we worked really hard and were unlucky.
Delph was immense.
-
John Terry handball, paid for exclusively by Sky Sports.

Perhaps the way forward is anonymous referees? Stick a wrestling mask on their heads. Then they can't be pilloried in the media because nobody knows who they are.
Alternatively, how about an international system, where refs are flown in from all over the world on a match-by-match basis? An individual might only ref one premiership game per season, so no time to get pally with Stevie and JT.
Nothing will happen because nobody cares when the 'smaller' club comes off the worse. They'll talk about it in the media for a day or so, but no real pressure will be brought to bear on the refs themselves. So it goes...
-
Woke up feeling good about last night, we went to the bridge and gave Chelsea a really tough game and even mourinho admitted we deserved a draw - i really enjoyed watching the match last night and there were no weak links - everybody gave their all and contributed.
Delph was m man of the match but i was very impressed with okore when he came on , our midfield 3 looked very good and while i was critical of kea last season i have been hugely impressed with him so far - exciting times ahead , lets beat Liverpool and give ourselves a great starting base to progress from .
-
I haven't seen the decisions so I'm not sure how blatant they are but what I will say is any big call, like sending one of their players off or giving a last minute penalty, and the ref knows the back pages will be full of Mourinho giving him shit. That's bound to play a part in his thinking.
Did I hear it right that the ref from the Arsenal game has been rested this weekend? If so that's absolutely outrageous. Being completely fair the second pen and the sending off were marginal calls but it's not like they were bad mistakes. What message does that send to anyone reffing away at the "big" teams' grounds?
-
So we let the get away with it. Tsk tsk! Onwards to the Liverpool game' and no mistakes this time. They are going to be thinking about the transformation in our prospects soon, and by thinking I mean those shocked by our newfound undoubted ability. Those we leave confused by their inadequacy, lying by the wayside!
-
Yep, usually my first thought when i wake up after a defeat is 'oh shit!' when the reslisation hits, but this morning im still happy and positive.
Can't wait for Saturday now, just gutted im not going to be there!
-
Really am gutted about the decisions we didn't get but I'm really happy with the way we played, this team really does work hard for eachother and we are going to give most teams a really good test, bring on them lot on Saturday!
-
That performance augers very well for the future. Forgetting the injustices Lambert has to look at the contribution of Weimann in particular. He missed an easy chance (at this level) to put us in the lead and a scoreable chance when Benteke headed it on to him.
Im starting to have doubts about how good he will be. The effort, belief and aggression are there but he needs to move up a level or two.
-
Not too bothered about the result, strangely. Just very pleased with the organisation, energy and flair and the fact that we have played two of the 'big teams' now and looked relatively comfortable.
-
I'm more pissed off with Mourinho's comments this morning than I was last night. Just wait until decisions go against his team. Twat!
-

That's the thing though, they won't. If that was any other manager (apart from Fergie) we were playing against last night, the key decisions would be different. The ref bottled it because it was Jose and it was at Stamford Bridge. I'm sick of the JM media love-in.
Didn't he say he the 2 players involved in the elbow a big players so that's why he didn't get sent off??? So if it was Delph and Mata then it would be different? What a bellend.

I dunno, if Mank U get a dodgy penalty on Monday night he might sing a different story.

I know what you're saying Ron and agree with you to a certain extent. I think we will persevere with him though as he understands the position so damn well. Once a couple of those chances go in he'll be flying again I reckon.
Everything else is tickety-boo, and the big bonus for me is how well KEA has played so far. Looked off the pace last year but seems to be getting to grips now. I also think we'll see the best of the full-backs when we're playing the weaker (than Chelsea) teams, which let's face it is nearly everybody, as their strength is going forward.
Great to see Vlaar looking better too.
It all adds up to us getting two of our hardest fixtures out the way, having three points and a positive goal difference, and being the better team (away remember) on both occasions. It's all good.
-
The thing is with Mourinho coming out with all of this tripe means that you can tell that we gave him a scare. If they'd have steamrollered over us again he'd be very complimentary. I like to hear that Lambert was allegedly contesting every decision, it shows he wants to win regardless of who we are playing.
-
Three points with an all in one thread.
Defeat when we revert to the old system.

Mourinho said in his post match interview we deserved a draw and was very complimentary - he knows we gave his team a real fight .
His comments regarding the referee I'd take with a pinch of salt - i noticed him shaking the refs hand and laughing with him just before the 2nd half kicked off.
-
We know from last season that we can pass the ball well against most sides, that we can score plenty of goals and keep going till the end.
I'm very encouraged that we've shown more solidity, defensive shape - aided by narrower full backs when we don't have the ball - and that we've been a lot tougher to play against.
The question is now whether we can translate that form both into home games and particularly games against our main competitors. Can we be creative enough with that midfield three? If we play 4231 can we be solid enough? Worth remembering that even on our excellent spell last year we never kept a clean sheet and relied on a lot of very late winners. We now need to improve on that form of we're going to push for top half. I definitely think we're capable.
-
We're back.
For the first time since the start of 2009-10 we can go to the so called big teams and scare the shit out of all of them by the looks of it.
Not roll over and die like we did at Man Ure and Cit-eh all too often over the last 3 seasons.
We need to put the bindippers to the sword on Saturday.
-

Good point , we have the ability to play well away from home and hit teams on the counter attack, it will be important to improve our home form and get the results at villa park against teams that come here and sit back - Liverpool and newcastle will both be interesting games and if we can win both we will be well on our way .

He also criticised the way we play, saying it was all route one stuff from Guzan to Benteke. He might have forgotten about Gabby's precision pass to Benteke for our goal. The bloke's a wind-up merchant and the media should know better than to crawl up his arse.

He is a wind up merchant and an expert at it - dont take his comments too seriously , a lot of it is tongue in cheek to provoke a reaction .

Absolutely right. So when he's complimentary about us, I disregard that too.
I'm looking forward to him being on the receiving end of a few dodgy decisions, but with no Fergie to intimidate referees, we may have to wait a while for that.
-
I eagerly await something going wrong for Chelsea at Yanited and to hear what he has to say about it. His disingenuous comments last night are laughable.
We are not taking about 50/50s or rub of the green, we are talking about a complete and utter failure by the referee to do his job. There can be no explanation as to why he did not send Ivanovich off. He saw it because he booked him. You cannot book a player for elbowing, its either a total accident or a red. His failure to send him off, never mind giving a free kick that was not a free kick, cost us a point.
To then repeat the trick by not giving us a penalty for the most blatant handball since 1986 when stairing straight at the incident is staggering.
Kevin Friend you are a cheating ******.
-
I wouldn't say he intimidated the ref last night , the ref was 5 yards from the elbowing offence - as he saw the incident i cannot believe how he could deem it as a yellow card , the elbow was used and made contact and as violent conduct must surely be a red .
Regarding the penalty the ball hit terry who had his arm raised and clearly was a penalty - a referee who made 2 shocking decisions which are hard to understand - i am sure had that been at the other end he would have given Chelsea a penalty.
-

Hold on, Weimann is still very young and will have dips in form from time to time. He still managed two excellent volleys which Cech made two great saves from - if those had gone in everyone would be saying Weimann is a world-beater; such are the fine margins in this game. Once Weiman gets off the mark he'll be much better for it.
-

Quite right. The thing I really like about Weimann is that he's quite a cerebral player. When he's off the ball, you can see him thinking where and when to run, and he gets into some really good positions. His finishing sometimes lets him down, although the chances he had last night were tricky ones and he showed good technique - just hit em too close to the keeper. Like Percy says, once he hits the back of the net - hopefully against the dippers - he'll be on his way again.
-
Regarding the penalty claim, the ref either did'nt think it was deliberate handball or he did'nt like the idea of 10 Chelsea players chasing him round the pitch at such a late stage in the game. I reckon it was the latter. Anyway, I don't think it should overshadow how bloody well we played. Bearing in mind how many goalscorers they had in their midfield, I can't really remember Guzan making that many saves. We made them look very ordinary at times and we could have won it.
-
my thoughts on last night
second half, as proud of a Villa team than I can remember for many a year
Delph, outstanding
Chelsea, the club, Stadium, fans a more soulless football club you will not find

song of the night - 'weve got the special one' to P Lambert

I'm convinced we'd have took all the points if that ugly bent twat would have done his job. I can take losing but not being robbed. It really does boil my piss.
The worst thing is, nothing will be done about it. Even if Ivanovic gets a retrospective ban, we don't get any points back. And that useless ****** will ref again and face no inquiry into his dubious and possibly corrupt decision making.
-
Alistair Bruce Ball on Radio Five Live this morning very positive about us. Compared us to last season and felt there was real promise, not least because of our ability to restrict Chelsea to virtually no shots on goal all match. Analysed the whole Ivanovic forearm smash and felt it was thoroughly premeditated; to paraphrase from memory - 'he looked at the ball then looked at Benteke and cynically through his arm at B's head and neck, definite sending off'. Not so sure about the penalty decision but said there was a clear handball in there. Felt that Mourinho was unfair when he described Villa's strategy as simply 'lumping the ball up to Benteke'. Even my wife was impressed, seeing as she only ever seems to hear bad news about the Villa.
-

I think that if he was punished on the pitch (with a yellow) he can't get anything worse retrospectively (or did I dream that?). If so it's a silly rule.
-
A club bankrolled by Britain's richest man - who is Russain.
Says it all.
No matter how much money they have they will still be a scummy horrible bunch of shit.
As for Mourinho - he had already become a caricature of himself by the time big Zat's header flew past Cech 6 years ago.
So why the press fawn over him is only due to the fact he writes their lines for them. Like Appy Arry
-
Then Friend should be struck off the refs list for incompetence at least.
What has he booked Ivanovic for? If its the elbow it has to be red, if its for something else then he's missed the elbow and he can be retrospectively punished.
I think in cases such as this, when there has been such fundamental incompetence and confusion, the ref has to explain himself. The FA demand explanations when comments are made about refs, well lets have some equality.
But We all know the game is crooked and the SKY4 get too much favour and fuck all will be done about it.
-
Kevin Friend will be hung drawn and quartered. Seeing an elbow and only booking someone will get him into serious trouble.
-
Someone should report KF to the Referee board and FA. Let hope he will get demoted to referee the like of Coventry instead of Premier League games.
-
The other thing that still irks with me about Morono's interview was the way he said that 'he used to moan about every decision just like Lambert is doing when he was Lambert's age', as if Lambert is some wet behind the ears twenty-something manager and Morono is some elder statesman. Morono is 50, PL is 44 - I can't recall my behaviour being that much different between the ages of 44 and 50 and I'm sure the same applies to top flight managers.
-
Am not a big fan of Friend and by the looks of it he made another horrible call last night. He should not be a ref in the top flight, but that is as far as my rant goes. We got lucky at the weekend, Chelsea got lucky last night, that is football. Stop making such a big drama out of everything people, its the first week of the season and we have had a promising start.
Think maybe overall we played better last night than on Saturday. The Arsenal performance was more about a good game plan, this was more of a consistent 90 minutes performance. The strikers have had a good start to the season, with Gabby again causing problems even without scoring. Luna looks a good signing as a modern wing back who can fit our style well and maybe add that bit of width that we lack sometimes going forward. As long as he can defend too I will be really happy.
-

On a personally note thanks for admitting that you are over 50 suddenly makes me feel so much younger!
-
This has probably all been said already, but here goes:-
We weren't great in the first half, but then that was because we didn't keep the ball well enough. Even though they socred, there wasn't many what you would call 'clear cut chances' for them. Then Benteke got an equaliser that we probably didn't deserve.
After the break, we were much better and should have scored on more than one accaision, before being undone by poor, and that's being generous, decisions.
On balance, a draw was possibly the fairer result, but if the ref had done his job properly we'd have won.
The plus side is we've shown Arsenal was no fluke and gone to the home of the probable next champions and more then held our own. All promises a good season ahead.
-
Having slept on it, I am still livid that those decisions were not given and by Jose's patronising comments. The next time Friend refs at VP, he should get a hostile reception. 'Chelsea's number one, Chelsea's Chelsea's number one.'
-
I'm proud of the lads they put a shift in I thought Delph was our best player I was singing all through the game we were unlucky not to come away with something like I say I'm proud of the lads can't wait for Saturday.
-
Just looked at the handball again and oh dear, oh dear. Let's just say he bottled it. Let's also say that had it been at the other end.......
-
The ref was piss poor and he should be dropped from Prem reffing.
This will happen a lot this season, both for and against us. Hopefully things will even themselves out.
We deserved at least a draw, could have won the game to. A great performance by us last night and we are looking 10 times the side we were this time last season. Nothing to worry about on Saturday. Well played Villa. Beaten by an own goal, an offside goal and a shit ref.

Well, after a couple of years of bemoaning the fate of MON, his BFF4LYF, Henry Winter is a fan of us again.
Jose Mourinho’s love-in with Chelsea continues after a second date at the Bridge but he did need a couple of winks from Lady Luck.
Two poor pieces of officiating by the referee, Kevin Friend, understandably enraged the visitors, Aston Villa. Branislav Ivanovic should have been dismissed for an elbow a minute before heading the winner. John Terry should have been punished for a handball in the last minute.
An animated Paul Lambert went in to see the referee afterwards. The Football Association’s newly tweaked retrospective disciplinary process may be scrutinised after this, especially the Ivanovic decision, although it would be a surprise if the FA acted.
It was a pity that the focus should inevitably be on some hapless refereeing as this was a really good game, particularly in the second half when Villa showed why they have grown so much under Lambert, why Mourinho’s barbs about Villa’s “didn’t play a lot’’ style afterwards were a nonsense (and will have Barcelona fans reminding him of Inter Milan’s visit to the Nou Camp in 2010). Fabian Delph, arguably man of the match along with Petr Cech, was a nimble, ball-playing presence in midfield, eclipsing Frank Lampard. Gabby Agbonlahor is enjoying a fine calendar year, Andi Weimann hardly lacks technique while Christian Benteke is the type of prolific frontman Chelsea crave — and why they are going back in for Wayne Rooney on Tuesday. Mourinho also noted Lambert’s disputing of every decision. Mr Pot? Please meet Mr Kettle.
Lambert handled Mourinho’s jibes well, focusing on praising his players. Rightly so. With a fraction of Chelsea’s budget, Villa look a force. Four days after winning at Arsenal, Villa really rattled Chelsea . But for Friend’s mistakes and Cech’s shot-stopping, Villa could have won here.
There must be a concern for Mourinho over how Chelsea tailed off, as against Hull City on Sunday, although they perked up when Romelu Lukaku came on to replace the disappointing Demba Ba. Lukaku has to start. He offers more energy, focus and a goal threat than Ba or Fernando Torres currently. The past two games confirm why Mourinho still pursues Rooney. For all these issues, Chelsea are top with six points and the club are united under Mourinho. Chelsea’s returning idol wrote emotionally in his programme notes about the “unique” and “fantastic” reception the fans had given him before the Hull game, a match attended by his family who saw exactly why he “wanted to come back”. On Wednesday night, the romance rolled on, particularly when Chelsea fans savoured the build-up to their sixth-minute goal.
It was the speed and accuracy of Chelsea’s one-touch passing that unhinged Villa’s defence. Ashley Cole started the move, tucked in on the left, drilling the ball quickly to Lampard, who turned it immediately on to Oscar. The Brazilian was starting in the centre of Chelsea’s creative trident, although occasionally switching with the right-sided Juan Mata. Oscar picked out Eden Hazard, infiltrating in from the left. The Belgian tried to work the ball around Brad Guzan, but the American parried the ball out. Unfortunately for Villa, the ball cannoned into Antonio Luna and back in past Guzan. Villa rallied midway through the first half. Lambert has them playing with belief, their 4-3-3 system both compact and bold. Gone are the nerves of last season, the thumpings as experienced against Chelsea .
Karim El Ahmadi sent a shot wide while Benteke kept trying to get past Terry but the Chelsea captain was equal to the heavyweight task for 44 minutes. Terry’s enduring determination was shown when throwing himself in ahead of Benteke, then El Ahmadi. It made his later lapse so strange. Chelsea almost added a second when Mata, Hazard and Lampard set up Oscar, whose shot went wide. Ciaran Clark then departed, his forehead accidentally sliced open by the studs of Ba. Jores Okore, a Chelsea fan who turned down the club, came on at centre-half and eventually settled well alongside Ron Vlaar. Villa equalised just before the break, Agbonlahor getting the better of Ivanovic and cutting the ball back to Benteke, who finally had escaped Terry. Benteke controlled Agbonlahor’s pass instantly, then swept it left-footed past Cech.
The second half was a mix of flair and brimstone. Agbonlahor curled a shot over. Weimann was denied at the near post by Cech.
Controversy then gate-crashed the Bridge. Ivanovic jumped aggressively at Benteke, catching the striker in the neck with his elbow. Friend deemed it worthy only of a yellow, a lucky escape. Chelsea fans thought back to Benteke’s elbow on César Azpilicueta last May, the Belgian receiving only a yellow (although later dismissed for placing his studs in Terry’s chest). Shortly afterwards, Ivanovic leapt to head in Lampard’s free-kick, further sending Villa into meltdown. Lambert and Mourinho exchanged contrasting views.
The temperature was really rising now. Benteke tried to wreak some retribution, flying into Ivanovic as they contested an aerial ball. As Ivanovic fell, he flicked out a foot and caught Benteke, who was bemused when Friend then cautioned him. Villa had been expecting justice to prevail and for Ivanovic finally to receive his marching orders, this time with a second yellow. They shook their heads in disbelief when it was Benteke who was punished. Lambert was livid. Mourinho was calmer, chatting with the fourth official, Stuart Attwell. He blew out his cheeks as Villa kept pressing. Only a wonderful save with his feet by Cech denied Weimann. In the final minute, Agbonlahor headed down Delph’s free-kick, Terry clearly handled, Friend waved play on and Villa’s frustration was complete.
They returned north fuelled with indignation but also surely buoyed by a realisation that they can live with the big teams. Chelsea need to sustain their excellence over 90 minutes, particularly with Monday’s trip to Old Trafford pending.

my thoughts on last night
second half, as proud of a Villa team than I can remember for many a year
Delph, outstanding
Chelsea, the club, Stadium, fans a more soulless football club you will not find
Ref- homer
song of the night - 'weve got the special one' to P Lambert
Agree on the above except on the Chelsea fans, I actually thought they were ok. In terms of noise they were a hell of a lot better than Arsenal (not that difficult I admit). And I was actually able to have some relatively level-headed chat with a couple of them in the pub after the game. Agree that the club is soul-less bullshit (a copper told us to turn left at the Marco Pierre White restaurant, enough said!) but I actually think the ground is pretty good as well (steep sides, proper square sides, full-house, a bit of noise from the home fans).

Chelsea are one of those clubs who always had a strong fan base during the darker years, but suddenly because of all the money and the last decade being their most successful ever they have become like Man Utd fans at Old Trafford where they expect to win every game, and very rarely make a lot of noise unless its a big game or the team are destroying someone.

One of the most horrible sights in football is these days when Chelsea play pre season in Asia and there are tens of thousands of enthusiastic Chinese people wearing their shirts, having hopped onto the bandwagon in the last ten years or so.
Horrible.

Probably in the minority here but the moaning ought cease so we can talk about the positives instead - yes we were on the end of some poor decisions but then truth be told, we got some pretty good ones on Saturday (if Ivanovic should have been sent off tonight, I think Koscielny was unlucky to be sent off Saturday, if we should have had the Terry penalty, we were lucky to get the Arsenal 2nd penalty, etc) - its been said before and it'll be said again - these things even themselves out over the season and thats part of the game.
On the positives - the team really impressed me overall as a unit, Delph is turning into a star (Lambert's getting the best out of him), I thought 2nd half we were the better team, and I never expected anything from this game anyway so frankly, I went to bed feeling proud and happy that this Villa side is starting to make waves. Thats how far we have come in 18 months under Lambert.
Roll on Liverpool - my only worry is tired legs as they have had a full week to rest and last night would have taken a lot out of the team - but they are there for the taking so long we stay attack minded and 'go again' :)
-
Very impressed with the organization of the team yday, marshalled magnificentaly by Vlaar.Delph MOM, but KEA and Westwood closed down space, closed down players very very well.
Taking into account the quality of the opposition, we limited them to very few chances last night.Defensively, apart from the 1st goal, very good.
Their 2nd, he should'nt have been on the pitch, it was'nt a free kick, but more importantly, HE WAS OFFSIDE.

Absolutely, it beggars believe the arrogance and expectation that comes from some fans, I really struggle to get my head around the idea of being a football fan only because "your" team is wildly successful and having absolutely no idea of what it's like to either work hard for your success or go through the darker times where winning a game feels like a pipedream let alone winning a trophy. The flipside to that is I would hate the idea of being thought of as a new fan only interested in Villa because they're winning things, not sure why I care what other people think, but it would be a dream come true for Villa to do it "the right way" and start winning a few pots at the expense of these bank-rolled, short-term success buying wankers.
-
Just saw an interview with Morono on the Beeb. He was emphasising how PL complained about EVERY decision - not just the big ones but EVERY decision. Before he came back to the prem I'd almost forgotten what a self-absorbed cnut he was - that interview reminded me.
He said the same thing about MoN. He is full of it.

We didn't get good ones on Saturday, we got what was or correct. We should expect that and not accept that we will be shafted in certain games because we got fair refereeing in a previous game.
And even in the Arsenal game we had some harsh bookings and their keeper could and should have been sent off.
Concentrating on the positives is right and I agree. But to disregard corrupt and incompetent officiating isn't right either. It feels like accepting it and I can't do that.
-
Corrupt - no, thats too far of a theory for me and its one borne from frustration and not one from hard evidence.
Incompetent - yes absolutely. But the big decisions in the Arsenal game went our way, thats my only point.
So then, 6 Villa penalties and 10 Scouse sendings off on Saturday would do nicely :))))

the big decesions on saturday were right . Yes some refs ( probably friend ) would have chickened out and not give the pen , but it was correct .
Also the goalie could have been easily sent off and the Luna card was stupid.
Last nights refereeing was sunday park standard . And to be honest Im still gutted .

I just wish the media and fans would stop referring to these clubs as "the big clubs". I was listening to a Villa fan on Talksport last night referring to "the big clubs" and "world clubs" (meaning Premier League clubs with a worldwide fanbase) and then reeling off the names of the likes of Man City. It's total BS and a mentality that frustrates me massively.
*Apologies if the Villa fan was of this parish, but please, next time, call them "financially doped", "sugar-daddied", "bankrolled", "FFP-dodging"...anything but "big".

It's not direct corruption, it's more subtle than that. When Saturdays ref has similar decisions to make at one of the sky mobs in future, he's going to think twice, because last time when he gave the correct decisions he was 'rested' for the following weekend.
And it's his livelihood at the end of the day.
-
I think that if he was punished on the pitch (with a yellow) he can't get anything worse retrospectively (or did I dream that?). If so it's a silly rule.
Yes you are right. How is your grand dad by the way? :)
-
We were unlucky but played well and the players will take a lot of positives and confidence from the game. We need to dig deep for one more big performance on Saturday before our PL holiday. I thought Mourinho was incredibly patronizing towards Lambert last night in his post match interview.
-
just read a few other teams forums about the game. from RAWK they are cheesed off with the pen not being given and comparing it to an incident with Agger when it was given, anyway this made me laugh
The Terry and Agger handballs were clearly very different. In one case it hit the player's outstretched arm from a set piece, and in the other case it hit the player's outstretched arm from a set piece.
-
We were unlucky but played well and the players will take a lot of positives and confidence from the game.
Agreed.
I think our confidence should be every bit as high as it would have been if we'd won / drawn.

Just watched the highlights again from both Arse and Chelsea game. We seem to be picking up a lot of yellow cards, but I like the fact that our team are now getting in the face of the opposition and the refs. It's been too long since any Villa player has actively intimidated the officials and it's well overdue. I loved seeing Brad getting a yellow card after the game last night for having a go at the useless ref.
I want to see us win, play good football and not roll over for anybody. The signs in the first few games are most promising.
-
If we had have got the right decisions last night it would have been 3 penalties, two sendings-off, and a disallowed goal away against two of the Sky 4 in two games. We would have used up 25 years of good luck if that had have happened.

"Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert has laughed any suggestions of a fall-out with Chelsea counterpart Jose Mourinho despite a series of heated arguments on the Stamford Bridge touchline during his side's defeat.
Branislav Ivanovic controversially gave the Blues all three points moments after he was booked by referee Kevin Friend for appearing to strike Villa goalscorer Christian Benteke, who equalised Antonio Luna's own goal to give Chelsea a 2-1 win .
But Scot Lambert, 44 , who Mourinho accused of complaining with every decision , praised the returning Chelsea manager and insisted there was no problem between the two, dismissing the exchanges as 'banter'.
"I think there has been a lot made of me and Jose in the technical area. There was the odd little thing, but there was a lot of banter between us," said Lambert.
"It is the same. The two of us were shouting at referees and officials and everything.
"I'm not going to go there and lie down, and neither is Jose.
"A lot has been made of me moaning - he does his fair share as well, just to let you know.
"It is not a problem. We had a bit of banter between us and I saw him afterwards. I like him and he is a brilliant football manager. There was never a problem."
However, Lambert insisted referee Kevin Friend's decision to not point to the penalty spot after John Terry to handle Gabriel Agbonlahor's header with his arm, would have been different had it been Chelsea.
The former Norwich boss admitted he spoke to the Leicester-based ref after the game, and complained he shouldn't have had to speak to him because it was such a clear penalty.
Lambert said: "I spoke to Kevin afterwards, and obviously what is said in there stays in there. But I didn't need to speak to him really.
"It was a clear handball - it''s a stone-waller, a clear penalty. I don't care what anyone says, that is a penalty.
"Gabby has won the header and it has hit John's hand. I'm pretty sure if it had been down the other end, it would have been given. "

That is pretty much my take on it. At the game I didn't have a clear view of either the elbow or the handball. Having watched replays today, I'm of the view that the elbow was premeditated and should have been a sending off, but that whilst handballs have been given for similar incidents, I wouldn't have necessarily expected it to be given. If Terry's hand had made contact with the ball from the original cross rather than the rebound it would have been a stonewall penalty.
Anyway, whatever they might say today with the benefit of the result, we scared the shit out of them last night.
-
Haven't seen any of the match yet but from what I've heard we played very well indeed and were very unlucky not to get at least a point. Even though we've lost I still feel very positive about this season, and I certainly didn't feel this way just a week ago.
Good stuff, Villa, lets keep it up and stuff the scousers on Saturday!
I'm surprised this post has gone without comment to be honest. Fair play s_h, genuinely, enjoy the ride!
-
It wasnt an elbow it was a forearm smash worthy of Mick McManus at his finest. The TV showed Ivanovic meant it but I dont think Friend was in the right position to see it clearly. He should have received a straight red.

Agreed.
But refs will book players for the kind of offences we are committing because it is an easy thing to do.
Refs like Friend last night are afraid of giving "big" decisions - he apparently misses a clear handball that would have led to a penalty and he books a player who commits a sending off offence.
This is the same ref who made us take a free kick TWICE deep in our own half because the ball wasn't in the right place, but minutes later ignores Ivanovic creeping 15 yards up the line to take a throw in.
The inconsistency is incredible and confuses players, managers and supporters.
I hate to think that we're going to be losing players for yellows given for minor taps and tackles.

Agree that from the ref's POV it wasn't that obvious. It also had nothing on Benteke's effort on Azpilicueta last season (which he got away with).
Handball was the ref bottling it though. We might have gotten that earlier in the game. He chickened out because it was so late on I reckon.

Am I to assume that Friend will be reffing Yeovil verses Derby this weekend?
-
The handball was much more egregious than the elbow. It was an unbelieveable and scandalous decision to ignore the very obvious. The elbow is quickly diminished as a storyline if the handball is given and the game is drawn. Two kicks in the nuts is really hard to take, and especially when complete neutrals with no agenda see it the same way. It's one thing if the decisions were marginal and we are looking through biased eyes. Something very different when everyone, even the very few sane Chelsea fans see that we were done by the ref.
-
Am I to assume that Friend will be reffing Yeovil verses Derby this weekend?
A good point. Aren't they supposed to be independently assessed after every game?
Whatever the case, his performance should not go unpunished. He missed the two biggest decisions of the game.
-
Nearly a day afterwards I feel strangely calm about the whole match now. Everyone, with a few obvious exceptions, think we were hard done to - We took it to Chelsea away from home and matched them - The Beast scored a cracker. Just want AndyW to sharpen up his shooting and we will be fine!

We'll quite, and the swings and roundabouts argument of gpbarr and others is simply not backed up by the facts.
Both penalty awards at Arsenal were correct according to ALL pundits I've seen comment thereon. Both denied goal scoring opportunities, thus by the letter of the law, both should have resulted in straight reds for the Arsenal players involved. Neither did. The second yellow for Koscielny is the only decision I would say we were lucky to get - he did very little - but arguably he should not have been on the pitch by then. And it also meant that Metersacker's two footed lunge at Benteke was missed instead. So I'm not sure how that is supposed to balance out Ivanovic's three possible straight red offences (two elbows and a high dangerous kick), for which he didn't even get a second yellow, a very good case for a penalty denied, and the winning goal looking offside. I had thought people might be exaggerating the ref's influence last night, but I've just watched the re-run on SKy and I can honestly say I was quite shocked at how bad he was - I've rarely seen such a blatantly biased refereeing performance as that second half last night, Ivanovic was getting away with murder.

Yep. In previous seasons we would have just seen the team mumble to each other and dawdle off the pitch. To see Brad getting so passionate about the game and taking it to the ref is exactly what we need to see our players doing - the likes of Terry and Giggs have been doing it for years and it's no surprise that decisions go their way.
The point is that you should be happy to see our players are not going to take that short of thing without a fight. Nobody wants to see yellow cards but I definitely expect to see a reaction. Perhaps you'd rather see the players timidly going home without voicing an objection, but I want a team full of winners.
-
Pleased with the performance. We were unlucky not to get a point at Chelsea who many tip to be champions.

I would like to thank the person who recommended parking in Edith Grove. I duly did so and proved to be handy for the game and as reasonably priced as could be expected for that part of London at £3 per hour in a secure place

Just seen the replay of the incidents from last night's game. Absolute disgrace. Kevin Friend, you're not fit to referee. Chelsea has some cheating b******s in their team.

Terrific performance last night, so proud of the team.
I tell you what, Chelsea know they were in a game last night! They were delighted to get away with the 3 points. Massive change in mindset from last season. Very encouraging.

I'm not sure that he missed them exactly, he just didn't do what the laws of the game required him to do.
When refs went professional, wasn't it so that they could be made more accountable? Well, how did that go then? Who exactly are they accountable to? When did the last incompetent one get sacked? What will happen to Kevin 'Jose's' Friend? Yup! Nothing. Accountable? Yeah, right!

Excellent, well-argued articulate post kt. And dead right as well.

You loved 'seeing Brad getting a yellow card for having a go at the useless ref'......Christ!
Well said, Jembob.
Or in the vernacular of a bygone era:
Get into them
Fuck them up

Agreed. We have been walked over for years by the so called top four. Fuck them. We have a right to argue about any decision, same as they do.
Mr Lambert seems to be doing a Fergie in his younger years. Oh how i hope he stays with us and we get close to our potential. It is about time that Villa stuck up for themselves and Lambert is doing exactly that, arguing with Jose last night was superb and well overdue. This will be the difference between us last season and us this season. We don't take anybody's shit anymore. We are Villa and Lambert is Villa.

Paul Lambert has made an official complaint about referee Kevin Friend following Aston Villa’s controversial defeat at Chelsea.

Fucking too right an all!
If a Ref's going to scared of giving decisions for Villa because of the press and the managers getting on their case then Lambo's now showing them that If you Don't give us the fair treatment we deserve you're going to be getting it in the neck and he'll kick up a fuss, so their performance gets scrutinized.
Go on Lambo son!
-
Probably been said before but I honestly think that when referees make decisions like Friend's they need to come out into the open and explain why. Not be interrogated, but simply explain why they gave the decision they did, to inform and educate all involved.
We all know the rule about elbows - players, managers, fans, refs.
Then Friend breaks those rules and does something different.
Surely it makes sense for him to explain why he did that in this instance! Why didn't he follow standard procedure?
With the best of intentions it would make everything clearer for all of us! We're the paying customers ffs, and players and coaches need to know what the rules are and how they are applied.
Rocket Science it ain't!
-
I think they should do it in the game like american football. You might not agree with the decision but at least you get an explanation.
-
I think Friend should come out...be put on a podium...blindfolded...given his last cigarette...then executed by firing squad.
That may be a little harsh. Or maybe not.
At the very least he should be strapped to a chair, have his eyes winched open, Clockwork Orange style, and be made to watch Made In Chelsea for 3 days straight, uninterrupted. Then we'll see just how much he loves Chelsea after that.
-
I only managed to watch the first half, therefore missing the miscarriages of justice. Can anyone please provide links for clips of the assault/penalty incident as it's a pain to search on my phone on crap wifi?

John Terry has previous against us regarding goalkeeping duties. I seem to remember 4 or 5 years ago, at the Witton End, Terry did a two-handed deflection and nothing was given. Distinct memory of him angling his upper body diagonally to make the stop (a serpentine movement appropriate for JT ). Perhaps the blatancy of it generated incredulous disbelief on the part of the ref? Can any keepers of the flame verify this or is it a false memory based on a player's reptilian reputation?

some gobby Chelsea fans trying to give me stick in Horsham earlier shouting handball at me. Tossers! They get away with 2 dodgy decisions and they still giving it the mouth. May they burn in hell. Where were they pre 2004? So angry.
