Title: So how excited are you about the new season?
Post by: Deano's Mullet on August 16, 2013, 08:45:46 PM
On a scale of 1-10 with 1 being not bothered and 10 being mega excited?

I'd say i'm at a 6. Nowhere near as excited as in previous years but that might be an age thing and because we've got a bastard start.

This is my 43rd season since Dad took me as a lad ( thanks Dad, Benteke style point to heaven required and I miss you but Happy New Season Dad) and although I've been to Arsenal loads of times and most of my thoughts have been about looking forward to the day out and catching up with mates I haven't seen since Wigan, I had a moment today when I thought about the excitement of the first roar when the team walks out and the anticipation of a barmy goal celebration.

Nothing in my life is like it and this has been the same throughout my life at 4,14, 24, 34 and now 47. I love my Villa and I've missed them..... Bring it on.

I will go an 8, really excited at the thought of how we played towards the end of the season, just a bit worried about this nightmare start that could spell trouble. That said, at work today in London, the gooners are genuinely worried. Keep it tight for 20 minutes and I reckon there will be discontent

For the first summer ever I've genuinely not missed football this summer. I think this is due to a) needing a break as every match last season from about February onwards was so stressful, and b) watching loads of cricket this summer and really enjoying it.

Now it's here though I am getting excited, mainly about the day out in London tomorrow though.

cannot sleep for dreaming of the Benteke Hatrick that is just destiny against this Gooner shower of shite, drinking Vino Blanco, with strong pain killers, Jim Morrison, Glastonbury, raves in the 80's , Shelley's in Stoke, farmers field with loads of loved up people enjoying themselves, Happy Monday's... When did that last happen ? Stone Roses album playing loudly at 8 in the morning before you met the lads for a great away day. Stourbridge Junction for the coach, train from Kiddy, 3 bacon, 3 sausage, 2 eggs, fried bread, mushrooms, toms and beans " Oh, where is the toast? Cheers babe." Cup of tea, 2 sugars, extra toast. Will say about a 8.  We all know it is a work in progress, the club and squad are in a rebuilding phase and we have one of the brightest young managers around who based on the job he did at Norwich is the perfect guy to do it.  Given the small squad and the amount of youth still a mid-table finish would be a good season for me, with maybe a decent cup run as a bonus.

As for general it will be interesting to see what sort of a title race we get in the top flight, given all the changes and how one sided it was last year, things are the most interesting they have been there for awhile.  I don't think the relegation issue will be as open this year, although Newcastle and Sunderland could both struggle if they don't get good starts, and Stoke are my dark horses to go down, along with two of the three newly promoted sides (Hull and Palace).  The race for Europe should be very good again, and it will be intriguing to see how well Martenz does at Everton.

The Football League has had a cracking start, and the championship should be exciting and unpredictable as always.  I follow Brighton in that league as I now go UNI there, also have an interest in Peterborough in League One and Morecambe in League Two.

I'm not convinced we've sorted out the defence. Expect nothing tomorrow or at Chelsea.

Hate football, love the Vlila. Honestly, if their was a game on TV right now, I'd probably give it 10 seconds before zaping to something else less boring. Not so long ago, I remember sitting down with my father and discussing how any of 11 teams could potentially win the league. Now it's two, maybe three.

Villa are family. Nothing else matters.

10 - totally on board with what Lambert and his team are trying to do. Defensively nervous, Guzan is great but the rest of the defense is too wobbly; midfield, we will miss the steel of Scylla for the first few games; attack wise we will scare the bejaysus out of most teams.

Very excited. I think we could surprise people this season. I know our defence still looks bobbins, but I'm really holding out hope that Vlaar comes good and improves his own game, but also his influence on how our backline is organised during the game. I see our attacking play being ever better to watch this season too as we have potential game changers on the bench. Tonev and Helenius both look very promising. Bacuna could have a goal or two in him. KEA will hopefully improve, given his solid pre-season.
I'm also expecting Lowton to come on even further. He's my player to watch to be honest. Benteke is great and he's a top player already. I think this could be the season where Lowts emerges as Englands best right back going. I think he's got an intelligence on the ball that perhaps the pacier Walker and certainly Glenda don't have.

Tough start or not, I expect us to pull off a surprise or two.

Also in terms of everyone else, it'll be very interesting. The scrap for 7th-10th will be interesting. Swansea, West Ham, Fulham, us, Everton and possibly 1-2 others could be scrapping for those spots. The relegation battle will be very compelling too. Expect a couple of big guns to be struggling again, notably the Toon. Possibly Sunderland. Sunderland will be possibly the most difficult team to second guess because of their manager. Will they be very good and push for those 7th-10th top half spots, or will they implode under PDC's personality and erratic behaviour? If it's the latter they could struggle. Stoke will get sucked in it again. Norwich have punched above their weight for a couple of years, so they may run out of luck. Who gets the 18th place is anyones guess. Bottom two seem to be nailed on to be honest.

One of the promoted teams may surprise people. Probably Cardiff. They've got some decent players. Whittingham I think will impress this season. Bellend is a Bellend but he can still do a job at this level and his passion can't be faulted. Perhaps 1-2 more signings will help them.

Most interesting thing for me is the title race. Utd will surely struggle to retain. City have a new manager and need to improve their defence. Mourinho wins titles where-ever he goes and you wouldn't want to bet against him taking the premiership back to the bridge. Then there's Arsenal, Spurs and hate to say it, Liverpool. They're all persistently, 2-3 of the right signings away from making a good stab of a title shot. Will Arsene get these signings? Will Spurs and Liverpool keep their prized assets and add 1-2 quality players. I mean Spurs have made a couple of potentially decent signings. Defoe as an option from the bench is good because he'll always score goals.
Liverpool are more than just Suarez. He's the main man certainly and if he does stay he's got Sturridge their too, Gerrard's re-invented himself very well. Coutinho is quality. Keep dirty Luis and sign 2-3 players to give them more strength and depth and they could be dark horses.

Like wise if Spurs and Liverpool lose their star players, then there's a group below them, including ourselves who could potentially steal their place if they get 1-2 more signings.

Last season was, relegation battle aside, shit. There wasn't really a title race. This year it's very open.

You can actually hear some of the old boys in hear letting out accidental farts under their tartan blankets as they sit in the window waiting for something to moan about to pass the day before they get to go back to sleep again.

Its the morning of the start of the season, we have a great young team, a forward thinking manager, one of the best 3-4 strikers in the league and all the potential to be something really special. Weve got a team we can finally relate to and no a single tosser anywhere near the first team.

Yes we may get smashed and the world may look bleak at 5pm but untill 3.01pm this afternoon we could do anything. West Brom were in the top four for a third of the season last year ffs.

If you have answered anything less than 8 I think you need to have a long look at yourself and workout whether this is really for you anymore. Its not an accident we support the best team in the world.

F**king 10. C'mon Villa.

If you cannot get excited on the morning of the first game of the season, an away game no less, a good away day too, then you should consider the services of an undertaker, because surely the blood has stopped pumping through your veins.

You might want to moan like fuck come five o clock, but for now, who cares?

know where your coming from Deano's Mullet (great name btw, and he was one of the best players ive seen down the Villa) and that's the kind of reason im scoring a 10 as I believe we have a bunch of young talent that warrant enthusiasm. I was there against Malaga and I thought we played some good stuff. yes weve got arse chelski and red bin dippers, but im not going into todays game saying were not going to win, cuz I seriously think we can get at em. if the worst comes to the worst, I will remain up beat as I believe in what this manager is doing.

Is this the "I hate modern football so much but am still going to spend thousands of hours on here talking about it and several afternoons at matches watching it" thread?

There's a difference between being interested and being excited. I won't make many (if any) aways this season so next week will be my first game and I will probably start getting excited on the walk to the ground, after a couple of pints. Today I'll be keeping an eye on things but in amongst doing other stuff.

Of course I reserve the right to take a completely different view should we be 3-0 up at half time.

I am not ready for Hansen and Lawro spending ten minutes patronising us and ripping our defence to bits and I don't want a man/afghan hound predicting our relegation for shits and giggles. Not even at least a point at home to Liverpool? I fancy us to win that one.

I'm hopeful of a top half finish and some exciting times ahead for us this season , the first 3 games are tough but I'm confident we can pick up points - lets hope its a season to cherish.

Ditto.

Thought it would be September at the earliest before we got any points on the board.

Anything from the next two games is a bonus, but we'll have confidence going into them.

10 - extremely excited about Villa this season.

Even last season even though it was a horror show at times I found it gripping especially as we got in to the last few months.  We could see what PL was trying to do starting to bear fruit and after yesterday's performance I think we can genuinely fear no one.  We won't win them all but Villa are BACK!

If you cannot get excited on the morning of the first game of the season, an away game no less, a good away day too, then you should consider the services of an undertaker, because surely the blood has stopped pumping through your veins.

We had a really nice day out in Liverpool, checked the scoresa couple of times and was happy to see Villa won but still can't say I was 'excited' the football season has come round again.

One thing the new season did remind me of though, Stoke City really do seem to attract a very special breed of Neanderthal.
