Is it a wankers special?
-
Does it count as falling on hard times if you were a multi millionaire at one point and proceeded to piss it all away by being a twat?
-
Aspinall fell on hard times because he backed himself to score every time.
-
"Hard Times".
Bloody big book by Dickens.
Falling on that could make a nasty dent in your cravat!
-
They did ask Hendrie who's fault was it he ended up suicidal/broke ..etc I actually mouthed out loud "you , you wanker" He wasn't sure who's fault it was though !
-
Probably was mentioned before but did anyone watch the footballer secret suicide program fronted by Clark Carlisle.
He interviewed Hendrie. To be fair Hendrie looked after his family by buying them houses, but then the property slump screwed him over.

Plus a divorce probably wiped out 60% of his wealth

I assume that was Hendrie's take on things?
I find it hard to believe that someone earning £1m - £1.5m a year for over a decade can end up bankrupt due to bad luck alone.
Let's not portray him as some unlucky philanthropic family man.

I watched it just goes to show without the right advice about investments you can feck your life up.

It helps if your not a prick as well.

Well you know it kind of does and doesn't.
I'm sort of glad that I don't have these financial problems.
-
"It's everyone Else's fault" syndrome. I'd have a little more respect if people like Hendrie took a bit of responsibility for their own actions. There is only a handful of ex Villa players I really dislike , and he is one of them.

He said the houses he bought for his family were repossessed.
I found myself thinking that, given that they were mortgaged or in his name (for them to have been snatched back), that's a pretty liberal definition of "buying" someone a house.

I'm probably spectacularly missing something here, but I've always wondered in situations like this why the relatives can't/don't contribute to their own housing costs. I remember reading an interview with Heather McCartney Mills when she said something about having to work to pay for her siblings' houses. Why???? Don't get me wrong, if one of my siblings offered to buy me property I'd happily accept.

Who are the others ? Hodge , Unsworth, Downing ?

Nobody has bought a house if it has a mortgage, they are in the process of buying one - normally over 20+ years.
-

My feelings exactly. I despise him. It really pisses me off when he is introduced as a "Villa legend" during a halftime pitch presentation.
-
Why would you 'despise' him, unless you we're extremely petty and jealous?
He played for us for 10 years, when we were halfway decent, and on occasion he let himself down but in honesty no worse than anyone I know (including me) as a young man.
I don't get the bitterness.
-
I agree, Lee. He was a bit stupid at times but he's not alone in that, if you throw huge amounts of money and adulation at young men it's not a surprise if some of them fuck up occasionally.

That's not really true. You've bought the house, you have just borrowed the money to do it. If you take your argument then everything bought on a credit card, or even many of our season tickets, belong to somebody else.
-
He was an arse, but for a time he was one of our better players. From his debut in 97 up until the early noughties and again for a brief period in 2005.
I'd find it hard to feel sorry for him, as most of his problems are self inflicted. Wouldn't particularly wish him any ill will either, mind.

Players are are always introduced as 'legends' aren't they?.
Jack couldn't really build someone up by saying "Please welcome a player who was at Villa for a good number of years, had more than a few good games, before pissing all his money away.......Leeeeeee Hendrieeee!!!!"
-
It would be bloody brilliant though.
-
I despise him because I think he is a major prick. Jealous of him? Damn right, to have had his talent and wasted it by being a petulant little git, with a terrible attitude and making more money than I could dream of, then throwing it all away and now expecting sympathy. He's a prick. I despise him.

Strong words those are.

Few Villa related things rattle my cage more than him.

Strictly speaking, don't the building society hold the deeds until the mortgage is paid? And it's a bit different from credit cards because the loan to buy the house is secured - against the house itself.
Anyway, to get back to what Rob said, I know that's how mortgages work, what I was saying is that, as the mortgage will have been in his own name (for them to get repossessed), strictly speaking, they were living in houses he had bought for himself, rather than ones he'd paid a lump of cash for and given to them.

He's not fickle, he just doesn't like him. Maybe Leighton's banner was for Lee as much as Dolly.

Pretty amazed by the bitterness and lack of empathy shown to not only a fellow being but one who did relatively well for Villa (and also someone who always seemed to enjoy playing for us). I say amazed, I suppose I mean saddened. I ignored Lee Hendrie's permanent tan and stupid sports cars at the time he used to pull out the ground after the match. I always thought he tried his best in a Villa shirt and certainly wouldn't wish him ill and certainly not revel in his misfortune. I always saw him more as a product of the changing face of modern football and there being too much money given to someone too young. He may have been arrogant and crass although I've never seen it myself or spoke to him personally. He's definitely been in some pretty dark places - I wish him all the best in the future and hope he's learnt some valuable lessons. UTV!

Well said, Devil.

Good post Diablo.
-
Good post Diablo. I met Lee once as he was friends with a good friend of mine, seemed a decent lad. Maybe he was a bit of a cock at times, but imagine how you were in your early twenties and then imagine having a shitload of money. I bet most of us would have been a bit of a cock at times.

I have met Lee a few times on a personal and business level including in the last 6 months.Calling him a wanker doesn't even come close.

Well I knew him from school, and have met him a few times since, and I'd say exactly the opposite.

That really made me laugh, thanks.
