Of the players we have signed I cannot see many starting on opening day.
Biggest contenders I would suggest would be Luna and Okore.
Tonev could be a darkhorse ahead of Gabby
Whats everyone think
-
Luna I'd say is a 90% chance, Okore about 60%, assuming they're both fit.
Unless any of our other regulars are injured I can't see starts for anyone else.
-
Luna will more than likely start. The centre back pairing will be Vlaar and Baker. Okore may make an appearance off the bench.
-
I think Luna will start, and possibly Bacuna who seems to have impressed pre-season. Helenius may get on as a substitute second half.
-
Like most posters so far, I think Tony Moon will start. After him, I'd class Okore and Bacuna as 50/50 and the rest unlikely.
-
Tony Moon will start, Helenius will come on as sub. The rest will depend on injuries/the form of the current players.
-
Tony Moon definitely.
Okore possibly.
Bacuna, Tonev, Helenius, Steer all on the bench.
-
I love that name Tony Moon.....really looking forward to the season and if we can get a positive result at Arsenal it will certainly give us some confidence, and it's time to blow that wanker Mourinho's home record out of the water.

I'd have thought Luna was a shoe-in.
Okore probably would have been if he hadn't missed so much of pre-season.
Tonev, Bacuna, Steer and Helenius will be on the bench.

Not seen much of pre season action but will be going Saturday - how has Moon done? Better than Bennett?
-
I can see Okore having a very similar season to Westwood last year. He'll take some time to adapt and get a place in the team, but then be a mainstay and looked at as a VERY good signing.

Yes, though that wouldn't be difficult given most of Bennett's performances last season.
-
why do we call him Tony Moon ?

Bennett I believe is injured so Luna is the only genuine left back we have who has featured in pre-season. However PL has played Baker there with Clark in the middle for parts of some games so he might be considering this.
I do not believe any of the other new signings are up to speed yet to challenge last seasons squad. I think he will go with the 3 who played midfield at the end of last season although KEA has been given a fair bit of playing time and has looked half decent.
-
Assuming everyone is fit, I think we'll start with Okore alongside Vlaar, and with Luna at left back. Beyond that, I think it'll be the same team that finished last season, but with hopefully much better options on the bench.

This is what i was going to say. This.
-
I think Okoro and Luna will be in starting XI (if Okoro do well against Malaga) and our bench will be stronger. It is possible we might change one midfilder but doubt we will not stick with Delph, Syvilla and Westwood
-
Not picking specifially on SPA here, but I've seen it a few times now and am wondering if Okoro is the new Clarke?
-
Luna definitely. Okore possibly would have, had the injury not occurred. Baker will start instead, and soon enough Okore will be first choice with Vlaar. Bacuna could start in midfield maybe, Lambo has been impressed.

Tony Moon's done good - so far!
Good going forward and likes to get to his man early. Bit suspect once oppo has the ball and is running at him; seems to let them cut inside a bit to easily.
But Bennett is injured; I think Baker will be at CB, so Tony to start.
-
Suppose if Weimann or Gabby get injured, then Tonev may come straight into the team too.
-
With the left back situation is Edna Stevens likely to feature?

Doubtful. I thought PL might give him a run-out in the Shamrock Rovers game which would have sent a positive signal out, but...
-
It's the Enda the road for Stevens.
-
I think Luna almost certainly, Okore hopefully if fit, and then possibly Bacuna.
-
Guzan
Lowton, Okore, Vlaar, Luna
Westwood, Delph
Weimann, Tonev, Gabby
Benteke
(Sorry Sylla although i do love you we need creativity bigtime).
-
We need Sylla to bolster the defence against Arsenal.
-
you might be right but i'm struggling to think who we could sacrifice... Delph has the ability to get forward from his holding role and cause problems with his dribbling, Westwood for me has to play because of his calm and collective approach, and simply because he doesn't give the ball away. I think Okore will start, Lambert isn't afraid to take risks and Luna if fit has to play he's head and shoulders above Bennett
-

Yep. I'd be cautious for this first game and go with the dependable three of Sylla, Delph and Westwood that worked well the send of last season.
-
Unless Tonev plays for 60+ minutes against Malaga and shows he is up to speed then I think it is highly unlikely that he will start against Arsenal. These new players need to be brought in sparingly IMO not dropped in the deep end and possibly set them back a few months. We have the nucleus from last season so we just need to keep adding to that bit by bit.
-
I think that the starting 11 against Malaga will more than likely be his first choice, unless he wants to confuse Wenger.
-
The team that finished last season were playing decent stuff, particularly the midfield and attack. That team pretty much deserves to start the new season and as Fredm says, integrate the new boys slowly.

No Sylla has to play at Arsenal. Swap Tonev for Sylla and we have a team.
-
I've got a feeling he'll start with Luna and Okore if he's fit and the rest of the team will be as last season.
