Someone in another thread asked if the Bomb Squad would be making an appearance, and I slightly rudely dismissed the idea, not knowing it was just a Villa XI.

I assume this match will be used mainly to give the kids a run-out, right?  Not much point sending unwanted players unless they're just making up numbers?

That was me asking about "The Bomb Squad".

Is anyone else going, or is it just me ?

I think Newport are going to be disappointed

Newport County fans will be hoping to get a glimpse of Belgian star Christian Benteke tomorrow.

So keen were County to silence whispers that Aston Villa would be sending a 'kids' side' to Rodney Parade (3pm) they took the unusual step of posting a statement on the club's official website on Monday.

The statement read: "Further to concerns raised by Exiles fans directly to the Club about the kind of side that Aston Villa would be fielding in the friendly at Rodney Parade on Sunday, we have contacted Villa for clarification.

"Whilst you can never be certain in Pre-season due to changes of plans, schedules, fitness and the progress of players, what sort of side any team will field, Villa have confirmed that the squad they bring will contain a presence of Premiership experience."

And Exiles fans might be rewarded with an appearance from the biggest fish in the Villa pool, centre-forward Benteke who scored 19 goals in 34 appearances last season after his £7m move from Belgian club Genk.

Benteke's goals kept Villa in the Premier League and made him a wanted man this summer with Tottenham Hotspur reportedly ready to spend over £20m on his signature.

That speculation led to the 22-year-old handing in a transfer request, but that was withdrawn after talks with manager Paul Lambert and the Belgian eventually signed a new four-year Villa contract.

Benteke made his first appearance of the summer in Wednesday's 2-0 defeat at Conference club Luton, but County's unbeaten pre-season record could come under threat if Villa send a strong side to Rodney Parade,

But defender Byron Anthony said: "This group works incredibly hard, we’ve had some good pre-season friendlies and we’ve all come back with a buzz after the amazing season we had.

"It makes us look forward to things that much more."

County are now just a week away from making their Football League return after a 25-year absence, with Accrington Stanley the visitors to Rodney Parade next Saturday.

"There is such a buzz around the place and we just can't wait to get started," added Anthony.

"We're all just desperate for August 3 to come around now, we are ready to get going again and are relishing the challenge.”

On-going work on the Hazell Terrace means it will be closed for Villa's visit and fans who have bought tickets in that area for the game can use either the North Terrace or upgrade to the Hazell seats.

So the Bomb Squad will definitely be playing.

The problem is that when this game was announced there was no indication that it would be the scrubs playing.

The ticket page on Pravda still doesn't mention this. Is it in writing somewhere or is everyone just assuming ?

Maybe those players that played the last 30 mins at Crewe will start tomorrow and then Tekkers et al will come on after an hour.

This was on our official site July 3rd and I reckon Newport knew all along.

Busy pre-season schedule for Villa development squad
Young guns to play five friendlies, including trips to Newport and Tamworth.

No fault on our part but I think Newport have been underhand with their own fans.

The game will be a shop window for the bomb squad. Plenty of PL experience and baggage amongst that lot. I'd be stunned if Benteke is in the country let alone stadium.

There is fault on Villa's part. It should be made clear on the Pravda ticket pages that this is a scrubs game.

From the latest Pravda ticket page. No indication that its a "Development" game.

I can see his logic. We have to get the first-team match fit, whereas players who's sale is impending are often pulled from games.

Can't see Benteke playing in this at all when he's just played twice in 3 days and will probably play in the Walsall game aswell.

Someone I've forgotten about but Enda Stevens hasn't figured in pre season yet has he? Injured or bombed? You'll probably see him tomorrow.

This was never going to be a first team squad fixture. It isn't even part of the 'all 6 pre-season games live on AVTV' list either. No doubt Jack will be there all the same, we can't have supporters feeling totally short changed.

If there is some kind of misunderstanding with Newport, there is sense in putting out the exiles.  If that is the case I wouldn't have minded seeing the game.

There didn't even need to be an announcement - we said from the start it was part of the reserves fixtures. In any case we've a game on Friday as part of a transfer deal, we've a game on Sunday and then one on Wednesday at a local club where we have strong links. Given that we weren't going to play three full-strength teams in six days, which is the most likely to have a weakened team?

Dave, it doesn't say that on the ticket information page. The Newport match is listed no differently to Crewe, Walsall and the rest of the other pre-season games.

I'm actually looking forward to seeing the kids playing. I'll see enough of the first team squad during the season.

Yep, in the dark and pissed is definitely the way to visit Newport.

I wandered round to check out some of my old haunts and most are boarded up. Loads of closed down shops as well.

There's a few other Villa walking the mean streets or sitting in Spoons or Costa.

Must admit cannot see what either team really gained from this, except a 90 minute run out.  Surely a League Team playing the week before their season starts should be too strong, too physical and have too much nous for an Under 21 team.  It would have made more sense to have put 3 or 4 "over age" players out each half to supplement the kids and help balance things up.

Grealish took a kicking all game long. The incident where he broke his nose was a blatant body check. Ref could have booked Newport out of the game but didn't card anyone until the last couple of minutes.

Watching Newport took me back to my days following Bristol Rovers, David Pipe, Byron Anthony and Chris Zebroski are all now playing for County.

Must admit cannot see what either team really gained from this, except a 90 minute run out.  Surely a League Team playing the week before their season starts should be too strong, too physical and have too much nous for an Under 21 team.  It would have made more sense to have put 3 or 4 "over age" players out each half to supplement the kids and help balance things up.

yeah it seems very odd.

The Daily Mail are lying shit-stirrers. Don't tell everyone though. www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2380414/Aston-Villa-reserve-lost-5-2-Newport-County-despite-promising-Premier-League-stars.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490

Why let the truth get in the way of a story  ;D

Why did Newport charge so much for tickets? Surely it was their decision to charge that much, no-one else's.

'Did not have the clash in fixtures and results list'.
Try looking at the u21 tab.
