Title: Matt Lowton - new deal
Post by: pauliewalnuts on July 19, 2013, 01:37:13 PM
Can't see this anywhere, but he's signed a new four year deal.

Good move, Villa. Can see him continuing to improve next season.

good news, think he really developed over the course of last season.

and nice to see the vast majority of the young players are buying into the vision and committing.

This is really good news.
If they play like they did at the back end of last season, I think there is every chance both Lowton and Westwood will get England call ups.

I just hope all this positive stuff rubs off on Benteke.

2. He's got a physical presence to him. He's tall, but not overly so plus dynamic.

Good move signing him up. Well done to all concerned.

His chesting down of the ball at high speed, moving forward and floating that wonderful ball for Weimann to score against Sunderland was one of my favourite moments of last season.

For me too, equally Weimann control and finish at the end of the pass... quality!

Great news, was my player of the year last season.

I assume that all the players who've recently signed contracts will have had a fairly significant pay increase.  I'm sure they're not on Harewood levels of money quite yet but we really could do with getting rid of Hutton, Given et. al sharpish.

He still had three years remaining on the four-year contract he signed last year. What was the point?

because you can't keep hold of young, promising English players who are starters for Premier League clubs whilst paying them championship wages.

To show any future signings and the ones we have bought this summer, if you perform well, you will be rewarded.

The only two I can think didn't perform very well, out of all the boys given new contracts are Clark and Baker. They were coming into their last year though.

There's plenty of stuff to moan about, this isn't one of them.

Lambert and the club are being very clever and promising to reward the players if they deliver. He is keeping his promise and that can only be good for the players, team spirit and fostering a sense of loyalty. He would probably have only been on 15k a week and doubling that is nothing compared to the amounts we have been pissing up the wall on average/poor players in recent years.

This is true, but don't forget we can afford to pay more thanks to letting those wasters go and also the new Sky money. The latter means that the going wage for a Premier League player has gone up again, so once more we need to spend more just to stand still.

Probably less than that! He came from L1, Westwood from L2. I bet they were on no more than 10K

Are you the only person on the entire planet that doesn't understand why we should be offering improved terms to our young players that we actually want to keep? It's just one way of telling them they are a valued part of our future.

If my staff perform well, and above expectations, I will increase their wages above and beyond normal.  If they do the bare minimum they stay as they are.  Its how I would want to be managed, and sends a very clear signal to 1) the most important person, the "player" him/herself, and 2) to everyone else that is either within the comapny or looking in.  Good work.

As much as I'm happy we've tied Lowton to a longer contract the bigger message here for all the squad is performance = rewards.  As it should be.  We have players and agents buying into what PL is trying to build, that's great for the club.

I can't help feel that if CB's agent was more of a 'keep your client's feet on the ground agent' then his client might now have a healthier contract to enjoy and for him to enjoy for at least the next 12 months.  Silly man.

Well deserved. I actually think he kept us up. His wonder goal against Stoke came at a time we'd thrown away yet another lead. Stoke that day were wretched, utterly dire. We should have won it comfortably by the time they'd equalised. As soon as their goal went in, if anything they looked the more likely to go on and win, but Matty pulled one out the bag and in the end we had a score line that suggested that for the majority we had it quite easy against them.

It was an essential win though. Had we not got it, would we have had the confidence to gain a few more wins that we did in the remainder. It felt like a turning of the tide. Even drawing the Fulham game after (which we should have won as they were poor, and getting an expected Utd tonking, we still had some confidence from the Stoke win).

I think he's an England right back in the making. It'll be tight between him and Walker in the next few years I think.

But it makes a change for it to be spent on players you want it to be spent on.

Well done Villa and great reward for Matt, we are solidifying our core players for the future which is fantastic to see for them and us. One good thing to come from the Benteke situation is that it will hopefully bring the other players closer together, enforcing the team ethic.

Somebody mentioned it at the time, but his goal against Sunderland required him to anticipate the long ball and step a couple of yards sideways to take it on his chest. It was that reading of the game which made that brilliant goal possible

Wouldn't go as far as seeing him turfed out, but evidently Luna has been bought in to push Bennett all the way. I thought from March onward, Bennett did alright. He still made the odd blunder but he'd settled in better. He had a few very good games too. Off the top of me head I couldn't name them, but remember him starting to look a proper player.

He does badly need to improve his decision making defensively and also bulk up. Luna looks like there's more to him. He looks harder. It might just be the ability to grow a beard which Joe doesn't have (because he's really 12 years old), but he looks tougher.

I'm nearly as happy about this one as am about Benteke.  I'm a big fan of Lowton, I think he's got everything you want in a fullback other than he needs to deal with diagonal balls better.  I'm fairly sure he'll get an england cap before the world cup, and will fully deserve it.

Indeed. What I like about this and the recent new contracts is that the club are clearly saying, you start onthis. You prove you are good enough and you'll get this. great incentive to a young motivated player. kind of also explains Lambert's so-called policy ofnot bringing in more experienced players. We can't say to them - you'll take a wage drop to this and if you prove yourself you'll get this. IfLambert is a good enough manager, with a good enough scouting and coaching team around him , then it will succeed andthere are some very exciting times ahead. If not, it won't be pretty. Next season is huge for him Lambert), and us.
