Would like to see us going full strength on this game. Bochum are a reasonable side. Our midfield 3 from the tail of last season, Wiemann and Gabby either side of Helenius. They were a top flight side not too long ago so it'll be a tough game.
If we mix the sides around like the last two games I think we'll lose it.

Winning isn't as important as fitness though. But would definitely like to see something close to a first team for one half.

Without Gabby, NZogbia and Tonev, plus you know who, our attack is going to look a bit limited today.

Perhaps Weimann, Helenius and Carruthers?

Either way, we definitely need some more options up there.Good ones too.

Be interesting to see how Burke does today. There'll be no clean sheet though I'll bet.

VfL Bochum 0-0 Villa - HT: Steady from Paul Lambert's men as they continue on their fight for fitness ahead of the campaign proper.

VfL Bochum 0-1 Villa: GOAL - Nicklas Helenius glances a header home after great left-foot cross from Leandro Bacuna from the right.

VfL Bochum 0-1 Villa - 60mins: Extremely lively from Villa this half. Bacuna sees shot go close while Albrighton curls one wide.

Albrighton is struggling so much he even misses the pan when having a dump these days.

I wouldn't read too much into that with this being so early in pre-season. From the look of the highlights so far, we're not getting into top gear yet. Just getting the fitness up.

That's what I'm telling myself anyway.

Loving the positivity, but I am very sceptical about lack of goals, really have fingers crossed that midfielders could start helping out a little

We have scored in every match, against opposition who are much closer to match fitness than we are, i'm not sure what there is to worry about.

I would also be very confident that should Benteke be sold, Lambert will have 2-3 attack minded players in mind to come in, probably from more proven leagues than he's thus far purchased from, which we'd then have the money to do. I'm thinking the Japanese geezer and a few others.

I'm liking the sound of Bacuna. Action at either end. I think we'll like this guy. Seems to have a great work ethic, with a bit of quality to boot.

Virtually the last kick of the game as well. There's more chance of us winning the FA Cup than ever keeping a clean sheet again.

I think we still need one more center back to be honest. I'm still not convinced on Ron. Another experienced lad to compete with him. I'd also consider cashing in on Clark.

Can't see it being a priority. I think Ron will be much better with a more powerful presence like Okore alongside him and I thought Baker did well in the run in last year.

It is not about the results at this time, fitness is what matters most and the Germans start their league season next week, so will be nearer match fitness than the Villa lads

We need a top quality striker to replace Benteke - don't think we'll need another 3 players, maybe 1 more to add

I was at the game. Wish I had anything meaningful to say about it, but spent most of the game trying to work out who was playing, and in what position.

I like the look of Gardner, Luna and Bacuna. Sylla will be our most important player this year.

Silly question Damon but, in light of what's going on re Benteke, did we offer any kind of threat at all going forward?

Erm... Not really. But the match had all the urgency of a trip to the post office to but some stamps.

Helenius looks like he has a nice touch and an eye for goal. He is never going to destroy a centre-half, though

Virtually none! The second half team had a lot more purpose to it, but was still too reliant on long balls - although "reliant" would imply they could do anything useful with them. I wasn't that impressed with Helenius and Weimann looked lost. I agree about Damon's Sylla analysis: he looked very impressive. It's a cliche, but we're not yet fit enough, compared to Bochum, and they were able to close us down very quickly.

Like a fool, I expected the 19th minute applaus! It's great we don't have to do that for him now!

It wasn't that bad. The team PL fielded in the second half is close to being our first XI.

And with Okore instead of Baker and Lowton instead of Webb, we wouldn't have been in any trouble at all, defensively.

We will have spells this season where we are scratching about for a result. But we will play some good stuff, too.

I was quite disappointed by Okore (Fidel Edwards). He seemed to be well short of pace and stood out as a bit of a liability. However, I really like the look of Bacuna, Tonev, Helenius and Luna. All of those look ready for the first team. GJ's Weimann was a little harsh as he was forced in to a lone striker role first half, in a 4-5-1, compared to a second half 4-4-2. Bowery was poor. Sylla played well throughout.

Looking at the way Clark, and even Vlaar, played we definitely need a new centre half in.
