Even though I reckon a couple of them aren't Villa.

They're fantastic. I love the one with the fans at the barriers being held back.
-
brilliant set of photos
-
Even though today, thousands of photos are taken at every match from every angle, you'll still won't see better moments in time like those.
-
Some of those I could study for hours. It's difficult to pick a favourite.
-
There was a fantastic mixture there of photos I have fond memories of seeing before, mainly he ones from '81 and '82 and ones I had never seen. I think that is the first time I have ever seen a picture of Ron Saunders and Tony Barton together. I remember most of the dressing room pictures from Highbury but had never seen the Gary Shaw one before. I think it is Morley holding the window open, not Cowans as it says. At first glance I couldn't believe the one of the coaches was from as late as 1981. I suspect that is because some of them were not exactly brand new!
-
A great selection of pics.
It was nice to see one of George Edwards in a Villa kit as I only knew him as the nice old man who ran the local paper shop when I was growing up.
Did anyone go to the English superbowl at VP in 1985?!
-
I reckon a couple of them aren't Villa.
One is Wet Spam, isn't it? And I don't recognise a single one of the (presumably) players in the 70's style suits.
Edit. Didn't notice the captions. The players in the suits are Norwich City before the 1975 League Cup Final and the one I think is the Wet Spam one is definitely NOT Aston Villa v Chester City Legue Cup Semi 1975. The team that day was Jim Cumbes
Chris Nicholl, Ian Ross, John Robson, Charlie Aitken, Bobby McDonald, Chico Hamilton, Keith Leonard, Brian Little, Frank Carrodus and Ray Graydon.
-
I think you are right about West Ham. 10 looks like Brooking, 6 possibly Bonds and 2 looks like Pat Holland.
Great to see the classic one of Spink and Withe kissing the cup. Shame they didn't include the one with them pushing it on the luggage trolley and the one with Dennis Mortimer wearing the pilots cap.
-
My personal favourite is the picture of Pat McMahon's winner v Man United in December 1970. The backdrop of a packed Trinity with the gable is just stunnning.
Also symbolic as a major turning point in our history.

As you may expect, I like that one too!
I am also surprised at how much better the old Witton Lane stand was than the small shitheap that replaced it for the 1966 world cup.
-
Love the last one on page 11. All the Villa fans at Highbury. Amazing how many black faces are in the crown on that picture especially as the era is normally painted in a very bleak picture in terms of racism.

The abuse of Law after getting sent off in 1963 - some things dont change.....

The abuse of Law after getting sent off in 1963 - some things dont change.....
I can honestly say Ive never been as angry as I was when Law got sent off for kicking Alan Deakin in the face when he was on the floor.
That man (if you can call him that) got something like a six week ban for what he did. Unheard of in those days.
An act of extreme cowardice from a so called brave player.

Yes that is classic Trinity Road photo. That old Witton Lane stand looked nice and it was a shame it was replaced by an enlarge bus shelter.

No 16 is Man City fans welcoming their team back home from winning the FA Cup. They beat a much loved neighbour of ours!
Unless we won in 56 as well as 57.
-
Great pics, thanks for posting link!
-
One of these pictures is of John Sharples. Although the name is familiar I couldnt place which position he played in around 1960.
Wiki says full back . Still means nothing. No doubt other members of the exclusive old gits club can put me right.
-
Lovely stuff
-
Brilliant - takes me back to some of the classic games.
My fave is of Brian Little in mid-air away at Torquay (?)

One of my best moments at VP in 50 years!
What a night that was!
-
My best moment in 56 years of supporting the the Villa. Beats even the European Cup Final win for a few of us!
-
loved the one towards the end with the guy holding up a banner saying ' Frank Carrodus to Wembley'.

I think the piccie of BL in the air was at Bristol City not Torquay

I'm sure I was at that FA Cup game versus Liverpool in 1967. We lost 1-0 and prior to them scoring a blatantly offside goal Willie Anderson hit the bar. Had that gone in I'm sure we would have gone on to win as we were playing really well considering we were shit at the time.
Liverpool had all decisions given for them even back then. St John scored their goal btw.

My third or fourth match. 4-0! United! It'd be like this forever!
See also a time-travelling Mick Jones (Clash, B.A.D.) bottom right giving Denis some.

He does look like Mick Jones!

Great stuff - some great memories.
-
the pat mcmahon pic is my fave as it my 1st taste of a big night at villa park as a 10 yr old. but all of them brought back so many memories over the yrs and the pitch invasion at highbury with our massive support down there i looked at those pics for ages trying to pick me and my mates out VILLA TILL I DIE IM VILLA TILL I DIE I NO I AM SURE I AM

I don't think those lads - and one in particular - had much to worry about.
-
Thanks for the link, fantastic. I really enjoyed looking at them photos. I wish I remember 81-82 a bit more! Great seeing the photos with Big Ron as in my lifetime that is my favorite time.
Villa Park has got to be the most impressive stadium in the world while the Old Trinity Road was in place.
-
Thoroughly enjoyed looking through those photos.
The no. 8 in the 'Chester semi' is Graham Paddon. Definitely West Ham.

Absolutely, it looks like Brooking is in the wall.

If you click onto the Mirrorpix.com link at the bottom of the article you can source more fantastic pictures. On the website for example put Villa Park in the search engine and it will come up with all sorts of pictures from the past. However, the picture of the Holte End that was in the Evening Mail just after we played Cardiff on Boxing Day 1968 and featured an 11year old My Left Foot with his long departed Dad could not be found. I understand from friends on this site that I will soon be able to get this image when the Birmingham Archive Library reopens in September.
Anyway I hope you enjoy the amble down Memory Lane if you are of a certain age. Thanks for posting the link Mr W.

Why have they displayed the Highbury Clock End crowd pic back to front?

I like that away kit. Surprised it hasn't really made an appearance since.
-
Great pics. Thanks for posting them. Great to see Pat McMahon's goal. Standing on the Holte that night it was quite difficult to see clearly how he actually put the ball in the net, only that he did.
Also nice to see the splendid facade of the wonderful old Snow Hill station before that particular piece of corporation vandalism had taken place.
-
I still love the picture of Brian Little mid-air, I might get a canvas of that made for my living room.
-
Nice to see Pat Matthews on two of the photos.

He went to Norwich didnt he?

I still love old Trinity.

Great picture and great stand
-
And the goalie for Manure that night was?...
-
Some fantastic photographs on there my favourite would have to be the Brian Little one where he is in mid air. Spotted myself on one of the photos as well.
-

Jimmy Rimmer!
-
Spot on Ron. I have an eerie feeling you must have been standing just a few feet from me at many a match.
-
Did most Villa fans look like Great Train Robbers or The Krays back then ?

David Janson was it Damo? One or two of us think he is Mick Jones of The Clash!
David Janson also played a postman in that series with Patricia Routledge.
-

Wasn't that Robert Lindsay?
And the bloke in the cap and glasses looks like an angry Cosmo Smallpiece who also looked like the verger in Dads Army: "Yes, you reverence".

There's an obvious wrong 'un towards the back who isn't wearing a tie.

That's the fella! The only names I could remember were Robert Lindsay and Tony Selby.
-
As its football related Tony Selby played the full back in the soap United. I think the bloke from the Oxo advert (Linda Bellingham era) played the other full back. Zac Bishop (based on Barry Bridges apparently) was the star striker. Cant remember who played him though.

I think United was before my time, but I have heard of it. Wasn't Ronald Allen the manager? Not the Ronnie Allen that went on to manage Albion, but the one that went on to manage a far more respected Midlands institution. The Crossroads motel.

Yes he was! I must see if the series is still around on one of the nostalgia sites.
-
At least he set himself up with a good business after his football management career ended. I always worried about what became of Mac Murphy.
-
Series gone forever BBC wiped it after two series.
The club was Brentwich United . They played in the second division (Championship)
Wolves complained to the BBC that the series was based on them!
Michael Billington (Oxo advert) and Ben Howard (Curly Parker) played the full backs. Tony Selby must have been a Norman Hunter type .
-
I've met the bloke who played the goalkeeper in The Manageress. He is also famous for being the patient in the 'There may be trouble ahead' advert. He also appeared in Corrie as the bloke who tried to make it up with Emily for killing Ernest. I see him pop up in loads of stuff. When I worked abroad years ago, he came out to visit his mate, who I happened to work with. He was a good bloke. If I remember right, they both came from Sheffield, both supported Sheffield United, and both played together in non league. For Frickley Athletic if I recall. The goalie out of The Manageress was the goalie, my mate was a centre half. They both claimed to be good mates with Sean Bean. I can't confirm that as he didn't turn up for two weeks on the piss in Tenerife.

Didn't want to start a new thread, but apologies as these are neither classics in the original sense of the thread or from the Mail.
Last weekend I discovered an old box of my Dad's stuff, including an old photo album of his that I thought I knew well. But obviously not well enough as I found these pictures of Dad performing as part of a gymnastics display at Villa Park. The date in the album is July 1937.
I knew he was a keen (and apparently a very good) gymnast and had won various medals, but he never mentioned this to me or I'd have quizzed him. Sadly I'm 23 years too late.
He's the blond bloke in the middle. They all look as though they've stuffed a pair of socks down their shorts too.

Strike a pose!
And there he is on the left gurning for the camera in what is clearly some sort of bondage event

It's the 1937 squad practising their Ashley Young.

To be fair , none of the others would have either

I like the lad in between them clearly wearing eyeliner.

Cracking photos, thanks for posting, lots of memories
Dad took me to the Middlesborough game in 81 & I remember him saying to me this could be once in a life time stuff !
Grandad was a friend of Eric Houghton, he was my Aunties Godfather, my Uncle told a few tales from the 57 cup final at Dad's funeral last year, things I'd never heard before !
The Tony Daley photo against Norwich, I think it ended up 3-3, we were late & "dumped" the car, I got a parking ticket that's day :'(
And the behind closed doors game, the copper was roughly where I used to stand as a teenager 8)
