I'd scanned it and tidied it up a bit. It is an advert from a Villa matchday programme from the early 1980s (obviously).
Just wondering - does anyone have a copy of it? Am sure I uploaded it here, but it was prior to the server move, so the original post will have been lost.
-
NB if this sounds familiar, I posted a request for it about 2 years ago ;)
-
Is that from the Anderlecht programme?
-
i may be wrong here, but isnt that a poster included in the Programme for a Villa v Swansea game just prior to Rotterdam?...(serious fucking statto moment here!)
-
I think it might actually be from the programme for the final, as I suspect I might have scanned it, and that's the only one I had (and I have no idea where it is now, either, to my shame).
-
Ahh, I think you're right there.

ive got the final programme and i dont think its got anything like that in it. (Plus its in the loft and i cant be arsed to check!).
-
I'm pretty certain it was in the final programme, but there were two versions.
-
I reckon it was in the Swansea programme and the Bayern.
-
It was defiantly in the programme for the final.
-
Yep got it in the final programme. Not sure how to scan and put it on here though, mainly because I'm computer illiterate and unsure where my programme is (though I could find it if nobody else has it to hand)
-
Definitely in the Swansea programme, I can scan it on Monday when I'm back in the office.
-
Re Nike adverts, I was in Cardiff that summer and in a shoe shopthere was a brilliant poster of Peter Withe celebrating in the net after his goal v Bayern (IIRC it was pretty big too). I went in and asked if I could have it when they had finished but obviously I never heard off them.
Did anybody else ever see that poster?
-
Just scanning it in, will PM you when I have it.
-
I remember around the same time there was also a great Nike ad with an aerial view of Hackney marches.

Yes, that was a great poster. I saw it in sport shop in Aberdeen
-
You know I never really really liked the shirt at thetime because ithadtoo much blue. The same as a poster said about next seasons shirton that thread. but back then as a kid with a conscious memory of Villa- from77 onwards - I supported a club that was used to winning trophies and playing usually good and winning games. 4 trophies in 5 years including the two biggest ones (yes still the FA Cup most yearned for). Itwas all we had to gripe about. This years kit harksw me back to that time and so I can't be too disappointed with the amount of blue. If Lambert can getus going in the right direction thosedays really might not be too far away.

I'd forgotten about the cool '3D' numbers! I demand they be reintroduced!

There was a sports shop in Shirley called Barry's Sports which had one. My Mom flirted with said Barry and he gave it to her when he had finished with it. Mom framed it and it was hanging in her lounge for years. For my 21st my mates got it off her and had it signed. "To Sam, best wishes, Peter Withe. BE GOOD! It now has pride of place amongst my other memorabilia. It's class.

One of the great losses of 1980s football.
Right up there with commentaries on matches abroad being done over the telephone, matches behind the Iron Curtain where there were crowds of 90,000 and 85,000 of them were in drab uniform, and those team line up graphics where the names went diagonally down the screen.
-
Anyone else remember the Ansells advert that was on TV straight after the final?

I haven't even got the programme anymore.

For an idea how much football has changed, I have a copy of the reissue the Evening Mail did of their edition the day after we won it, and it got about a third of the front page.
These days (for any club) it'd be a 20 page special.
-
Panic over!
It has been found.
-
Barry's Sports in Shirley?
I am now getting 1980s local retail crossover confusion, mixing that place with Barry's barbers and fishing tackle shop on the corner of Stratford Road and School Road, by the Three Horseshoes in Hall Green.

Alright, alright I feel old enough!

It was by Dhillons newsagents and the Plumbers on Shakespeare drive. It wasn't there long.

My dad and sister went to Rotterdam but I had to stay home and watch it on TV with my mom. Pretty much straight after the game they went to an ad break and the first one was an Ansells ad. It started with you seeing a bloke sat in a chair with a dog at his feet (you could only see the bloke from legs down iirc). He shouts "we've done it" and goes down the pub with his dog. Honestly, i'm not making it up!
As an aside, watching the final was the first time I swore in front of my mom, I was 12 and it was when Bayern scored.

Brilliant!
Just love it!
Remember phoning my brother and not knowing what to say. We cried over the phone but didn't really say any words.
My Mrs came down from upstairs and said "why are you shouting" and I think I dribbled a reply made up of grunts and blubbers!
We were European Champions FFS! Aston Villa! European Champions!!!
Like winning away at Oldham but FU**IN' massive!
Well done Ansells!
Aston born and brewed!
-
This isn't the one but, remember this one?
-
Love the dressing room Nike advert and the ansells one isn't bad either.
-
Awesome. Both of them.
-
One programme ad that has always stuck in my mind is from 1983 I think. The Villa squad posing proudly with their brand new club sponsored Austin Maestros. I also seem to remember the first time we had Mita on our shirts was for the live Friday night game with Liverpool around the same time. Probably the first season it was allowed for TV games. Suddenly the ground was full of Mita ads and the programme that night was more like a photo copier catalogue.

Even now I don't think any club has ever prostituted itself to a sponsor as much as we did for Mita.

Yes, i do. It's strangely the one clear memory i have of the final itself.
-
Thank you Clampy! I love you.
-
Thank you Clampy! I love you.
If it's the one i'm thinking of, did it flash up 'Congratulations Villa' or something like that at the end?
-
I can't remember. Main reason I remember the advert at all is that we taped the final for my dad and sister to watch when they were back and left it running. Also taped loads of the news reports that ext day. Wish I knew where it was.
-
The memories of Rotterdam and of the season before still send shivers down my spine and turn me into a nostalgic, jabbering wreck.

I dont think this was a Nike ad because these shirts were made by Le coq Sportif.
-
If I didn't know better I would swear that is Ian Ormondroyd in the picture.

I've still got my original, along with original copies of any of the next day's papers I could manage to get. They're cherished.

Yes it was.
What is the only logo visible in the picture ?
They also supplied the football boots for the whole team for the final.

All this talk about Nike but we actually won the European Cup with the greatest ball of all time, the Adidas Tango. I was very proud of my cheap plastic imitation one.

Following on from this.....Sorry if it's big but this is the first time I have done it.

mmmmmmmm Impressive fail.
How do I post a picture using an IPad?
-
Have you saved it an image hosting site like imageshack or Photobucket?
-
Yes.Done that...... Now what?
-
Sorry that sounded rude. Bickering with the Mrs, that tone was meant for her!
-
Thank you Clampy! I love you.

It was for Davenports wasn't it? Features an old bloke in a cloth cap with his dog Jumping up and screaming "That's it! It's over! We won!!" and runs off down the pub with "Congratulations Villa" superimposed. One of the first examples of "interactive advertising" ever.
-
Another one I can think of is a picture of Big Ron and some of the players with a Rover 800. I think the players were stood around it with Ron in the driving seat. Sure somebody linked it on here but can't re-find it.
-

No worries. Apologies for the delay in replying.
Get the url link for the picture, for example if it is photobucket it will start http://img.photobucket
Copy that link and then paste it between between these so as you get your link but delete the space between the g and ]. I have to put the spaces in to show you.
Hope that helps and makes sense.
-
And if that fails PM me the link and i'll post it for you.

I just remember the advert straight after it and the 'Congratulations Villa' bit. The final itself is a blur.

Thanks to curiousorange, I have got the scan now, and it is a Nike ad.
I will post the cleaned up version on here later on in case anyone wants it, plus one sized for a facebook background, too.

that was a bit of a cheeky one by Nike - didn't the le coq shirts have the logo in the numbers on the back of them?
-
Anyone else remember the Ansells advert that was on TV straight after the final?
If my memory is right it was a Davenports advert
-
Could well have been Wookster.
-
Anyone remember - you have to be old- the 'Ansells Bittermen' campaign.
It included: "Aston Villamen, you can't beat 'em" and a great outdoor hoarding of the old Holte in full cry.
Seventies? Late sixties?
-
I could have sworn it was Mitchell's and Butler's. Now I'm confused.
-
From memory I thought the ad straight after the game was Davenports and the old man said calmly to the dog "Well lad, we did it" and got up to go to the pub with Congratulations coming up on the screen.
I was at the match but managed to get a copy of a video made by one of my mate's family and it had the match and the adverts before going back to the pundits.
-
Think it also said 'Well done Villa'.
-
Be nice if someone could find that and stick it on utube ;D
-
did anybody scan the pic?
