Extraordinary that Benteke isn't on the cover. And we've now given him the perfect excuse to play-up and look for a move. Amateurs..

I think it's the opposite eamonn, we are simply showing him that he has not "made it" yet but one more season of the same and he can achieve legendary status this time next year  ;)

Speaking of Villa DVD's does anyone know what the story is with "The Big Match" series? About two years ago ITV released an Aston Villa edition (Tony Morley on the cover) with decent footage from about a dozen games from the 70's and 80's taken from their archives. I noted in HMV recently that clubs such as Spurs and Newcastle have a second edition with more highlights which I felt a bit aggrieved by. Surely we were more successful than both during ITV's running of this show.

Then, yesterday I saw that another "Aston Villa The Big Match" with Peter Withe on the front came out last September. For some odd reason it appears to replicate the highlights of some of the earlier edition with one or two extra games from the mid-70's. It only has a running time of an hour compared to the previous one's hour and a half. On the surface of things it looks like they are trying to sell the same product with a couple of minor differences and slapping-on a different cover so as to trick fans who had bought the earlier edition!

Can anyone shed any more light on this?

To be honest, I don't like it when the club concentrates its love and promotion around one player.   We need to spread the love around and keep all our players in the limelight.  I'm glad, for example, that the club has been focusing on Gabby all week on the official site.  It's the right way to do things, in my opinion.

Yep, Benteke was great but we had a number of good performers. There's plenty of Benteke in the DVD.

I have both, have watched them both but can't remember the differences. I'd say there are 2 as two different companies had rights to The Big Match.

As for why less Villa matches for future volumes, all I can guess is that a) we spent half the 70's not in the top flight so were shown on TV less b) The Big Match was the southern version of Star Soccer, so i'm assuming have more coverage of London clubs.  Could do with some Star Soccer DVD's!

Agree with all that, and I don't really give a toss (as with most, I'd rather we weren't seen/didn't portray ourselves as a one man team), it's just a bit surprising considering he made more positive headlines than any other player last season.

To answer PWS' query regarding the lack of an Aston Villa Star Soccer DVD Collection, the tapes used by ATV/Central tapes were either destroyed or taped over. I have a vague recollection of writing to the Birmingham studios many years ago asking if there were any plans to do 'Best of' collections and had a fairly negative reply. A great pity as I know the cameras were at Brian Littles full home debut (5 - 1 tonking of Torquay) and many others.

If we're talking season dvds, can I heartily recommend the 1000 Premier League goals dvd available, every goal from 1992-early 2013 is on there without a single goal from the opposition and skipping all those goalless games where we might not have turned up or got tanked. Its perfect propaganda in a way and also essential as you still can only get footage of 92-2002 ish on vhs.

Snap up the 2012-13 season review DVD from Villa Stores.

Priced at £17, the new DVD is out now.

It is a comprehensive look-back at Paul Lambert's first season in charge.

Follow the fast-paced progress of Lambert's Lions as they show their class and courage throughout a challenging campaign of highs and lows.

Lambert moulded a team awash with young talent and it was a term which saw the birth of a new Villa.

Lambert brought in key some signings, including Christian Benteke, who marked his debut campaign at Villa Park by breaking Dwight Yorke's single-season goal record in the Premier League.

There was also a personal achievement by fans favourite Gabriel Agbonlahor, who broke another Yorke record to became Villa's leading Premier League scorer.

The season saw the emergence of Andi Weimann, who excelled in claret and blue.

Then there was Ron Vlaar, who added presence to the backline, Matt Lowton who starred week after week and Ashley Westwood, a pass master picked up from Crewe for under £1m.

Fabian Delph, so often sidelined with injury up to this season, also excelled with his bite and aggression in the central ground.

Not forgetting Brad Guzan, either, who impressed greatly as he took home both of the club's prestigious player of the season gongs at the annual dinner.

The highlights of the season included a famous 3-1 victory at Liverpool, a 6-1 demolition of Sunderland and emphatic Capital One Cup triumphs at Manchester City and Norwich City.

In addition to footage from every game, this DVD also features an extended interview with Gabby Agbonlahor, who talks us through his goals.

It really is a "grit yer teeth" job through that time - it is interesting that the word "lucky" is used a lot concerning the goals... Hmmmm

The penalty was a complete joke, but its almost impossible to tell when its a dive. What makes me angry to this day is Nigel Adkins after saying he lost his footing but its allowed or something like that. Just admit you cheated! Benteke had a complete mare that game too.

Just got to the end of Liverpool away. Some of the goals we scored those first few months even when we were struggling are up there with some of the best i've ever seen from the Villa. If manure or whoever had scored them we'd never have heard the end of it.

Dilemma time though, should I skip the next 2 months?

The only match I FF through was manure away.

Amusingly, on the one replay of Vlaar's goal against Sunderland, as he starts his run you can clearly see me looking down as i'm texting Legion an update on the match. Fortunately I am looking at the game as he scores.

I seem to remember a big communal shout for Lowton to 'shoooot' before that goal. Followed by a less enthusiastic one for Vlaar to shoot.

Ordered, received and watched. What interested me was that having finished the season on a relative high, I was reminded of just how poor our defence was in the first half or so of the season. It was quite difficult to watch and I found myself fast forwarding past opponents goals. Glad they sent more time on the good matches such as Liverpool, Stoke and Sunderland.

Great goals though, and top half form since the turn of the year.

I think the first one I had was '88-'89. I think Martin Tyler talks us through the season and does some commentary. I distinctly remember Brian Moore doing what appeared to be a live commentary at Charlton, including his utter disbelief at a couple of moments of madness from Nigel Spink.

You might be right. I keep repeating "What's Spink doing? And what's he doing now?" in my head. But it seems to sound right whichever of those two voices I put to it.  If I had to put money on it though, I would stick with Brian Moore. Especially as it was a London game. Wasn't Gerald the North West? Maybe eastie can watch the DVD and let us know.

Depending how hot she looks i might consider it ;)

Easts, are you sure you're married?

I've told you before clampy , how many times do i need to spurn your advances :(

To be honest, I can't compete with the Karren Brady's and Exclamation Marks of this world.

Sure hope so. What an interesting narrative the whole thing would be to look back on in years to come when we're finishing top 4 ;)

They've gone out of fashion now. Can just watch the highlights off the youtube channel of your favourite matches of the season.

Exactly. There's so much footage available online< so I don't see the point.

I've absolutely gorged on stuff posted on you tube and social media over the last week.

Yeah but it's not the same as sitting down in front of the TV and watching 2 hrs of goals and cabbages fly past as a 9 month tale of redemption is told. Preferably narrated by Morgan Freeman and on Blu-Ray FTW.

Beat me to it and put it more eloquently than I could have. I have never thought of buying a season review DVD but, hell, this is an epic waiting to be told. The disillusionment with SB, the wariness about Dean when he started, the amazing early results... the tail off after the West Brom debacle... the return of Jack for the incredible Derby match and the building crescendo, with the 10 match winning sequence ending with the crazy events at Leeds. Down 1 0 to the Baggies, come back, lose, pens, nervy end to final. Captain and manager, both Villa fans, hold up the play off trophy. Roy of the Rovers stuff.

I used to get the VHS of all our seasons in the 90s. The fantastic Villaboy Youtube channel actually has most of them online if you want a nostalgia filled Sunday. Also got those random ones we used to bring out during the season like Villa squaddies and Gregory's graduates.

It's just not the same nowdays. If I want to watch our fantastic win at the Emirates in 2008 I can just quickly type in and 10 minutes highlights of that game on MOTD pops up. Or the Blackburn second leg in 2010.

Annoyingly the one I can never find more than 2-3 minutes of is us winning at Old Trafford in 2009. Anyone know if there's at least 5-10 minutes highlights of that anywhere. Best I can find is Villa clips site which has Gabby goal and the final whistle.

End of Feb  were 13th and 8 points off play off place and many of the teams had a game in hand.
What a kin turnaround

Definitely be a good watch this season! They should also bring it out in Blu-ray which is way better quality than DVD.

I think rather than whole season I could see club bring out DVD of the play off matches. 30 minutes highlights of the WBA legs and then full Derby game.

Not convinced it will happen though.

Not at all Hookeysmith I'm a mad collector of everything Villa have been for years and the reason I wanted them to do one I have every DVD and video of Aston Villa and I would like another to add to my collection sad I know but we all have something that we collect.

It's also been such an incredible season, the 5 - 5 with Forest. Coming back from 3 - 0 to Sheffield Utd in the last ten minutes. The amazing 4 - 0 against Derby and the ensuing 10 match winning series to take us from mid table and effectively out of it to the playoffs. The Leeds debacle. Fantastic goals from McGinn, Graelish and Hutton. Grealish being attacked by a fan then scoring the winning goal. Yes, you can watch any of those games on youtube but I'd rather see a properly put together compilation.

It should be called Great Escape 2.
Gerard Deapardeu as STEVE Bruce, Russel Crowe as the cabbage chucker in full gladiator outfit.
Sylvester Stallone as Dean Smith Rambo style.

Does a Villa archive exist anywhere where you could pick a Villa game you want to watch (90 mins) at leisure from years gone by?? e.g So I could pick Villa v West Brom from 2002 and it would come up  8)

Not quite 90 minutes for all games but this is by far the best:

AVFC clips on YT also has the odd 90 minute game.
