Randomly thinking today, having watched that thing with Lambert talking about his EC win as a player on Sky last night, we have had three managers who have won the European Cup as players.
I was wondering, which English clubs have more? And if there are any, how many of them had managers who won it with clubs other than themselves?
EDIT - I just worked out that Newcastle who can beat us - Keegan, Souness, Dalglish, Gullit and Terry McDermott. Impressively so, as more than one of theirs won it multiple times, and with different clubs.
-
Man City have had a few, if you include caretakers.
Kidd, McNeill, Clark, Neal, Keegan
Edit - Blackburn have had Sounness, Dalglish, Berg and Kiddo
-
Wycombe Wanderers have had two. They'll be tough to match from the lower leagues I'd imagine.
-
Swansea spring to mind. Laudrup won it with Barcelona, Sousa won it with Juventus and Jimmy Rimmer has two winners medals and was their caretaker manager. Also John Toshack, who may or may not have been in the final squads for Liverpool in '77 or '78, but definitely played a part somewhere along the line.
-
As an aside,Villa have had 4 keepers who have played in European Cup finals .Rimmer,Spink and Schmeichel on the winning side and a losers medal for which keeper who played for us ?
-
Stuart Taylor?
-
Good shout but no,the goalkeeper who played for us played the whole 90 minutes in the final
-
Evan Williams.
-
Evan Williams. Played for Celtic when they lost the final in the early seventies.

Preston have had three.
-
It's nothing special, even Tamworth have had one.

exactly as does Plymouth as calibre of player doesn't always match manager skills. Shilton for the record.
If people are mentioning Kidd then its 5 for Bolton (Inc temp takers) Lee, Neal, Dunne, Mcgovern and Irwin.
And i think we had Allan Evans. So that makes 4 for villa!

Preston have had three.
Rotherham had two at once when McGovern and Gemmill were joint managers. I am struggling to think of Preston's third after Charlton and Stiles.
-
Wasnt Beckham on loan at Preston

he scored for man u in '68...

Kidd? Also, who is the Irwin who managed Bolton? Dennis? Colin?
-
With Brian Kidd plus Beckhams 5 games for PNE makes four
-
Wasnt Beckham on loan at Preston
yes he did but no need what so ever to bring him into this thread.
Grayson managed Preston he played for villa. David moyes could win the champ league with Man Utd and he managed Preston both irrelevant but more substance and sense than bringing Beckham into the thread. No need to deflect discussion if you are struggling to be involved *sighs*

-
Colin Irwin was Liverpool and Swansea. Possibly a sub for Liverpool in '81? Didn't know he managed Bolton though.
-
Yes Clark is who i was thinking re forest! I dont know Irwin but he was some temp role for Bolton.
-
Clyde have had two.

What the fuck is this bollocks if Beckham played for Preston then it counts surely....so what is wrong with bringing him into this thread....and the shit about needing to deflect discussion!!!!!
-

Did Davids win it, now non league with Barnet?
-

He did he won it in 95 with that great Ajax side that was ripped to bits following the Bosman ruling.

Preston had Charlton, Stiles and also Kidd for a short while in 1986.
