No, the masks awaiting the away fans were supplied by an anonymous donor ready for Petrov day.

I've seen the OS advertising that people could buy a Petrov mask at the club shop. Bit odd if it had already been pre-arranged.

Guzan, Lowton, Vlaar [c], Baker, Bennett, Westwood, Delph, Sylla, Weimann, Agbonlahor, Bent.

subs: Given, El Ahmadi, Dawkins, Gardner, Bowery, N’Zogbia, Herd.

Bent gets a send-off, and Gardner's made it to the bench. This is a nice way to finish off. Make it a win lads!

I think N'Zog's going to be made available for transfer. If he was in PL's plans you would have thought he would have put Gabby up top and N'Zog out wide.

Happy Bent starts, score a few today and he should be hot property in the transfer window as well as giving us a chance to shoot up to 11th.

Nice to see Bent start for two reasons. Firstly it will be nice to see him sign off with a goal (or three). Secondly, a good display will help him find a new buyer and help us get a decent fee for him.                                                                                                        I'm a bit suprised Carruthers isn't in the squad. I take it that Lambert just doesn't rate him. Or doesn't like his attitude maybe.

Where do people think we will finish in the league today then? I'm going for 12th.
I fancy us, Man Citeh, Arsenal, Swansea and Spurs all to win. Maybe a draw between Swansea and Fulham. Saints will  have too much for Stoke though.

Good to see KEA on the bench. Also, young Herd - I presume he is cover at RB, since Eric is not on the bench.

If Stoke and Soton draw, there is a good chance we'll finish 11th. I'll go for 12th as well though. As it is unlikely every other result will go our way (like they did on the final day of the 10/11 season).

Bit of a strange bench. Dawkins and Herd will likely be off and have barely been involved all year. Doesn't look great for Bannan and Lichaj.

Unless Bannan is injured it looks pretty grim for him too. Dawkins ahead of him on the bench.

Wouldn't surprise me if it's the last we see of Herd too.

Carruthers fell foul of the 'no mobiles' rule. Not quite the same as being photographed spreadeagled in a casino covered in banknotes, but I do wonder if  he is being given a hard time.

Right now I think Carruthers is just being given the time to develop.

I think anyone who isn't in our first choice XI or Gary Gardner could well go in the summer. I read a PL quote about building up the strength of the squad over the summer so I think we will be trying to offload anyone who wasn't good enough to get into a side that was struggling near the bottom of the league and bringing in players that will give competition for places all over the park.

Don't think we should draw any conclusions from this - what with long-term injuries etc.

I doubt Herd will be off. He has just had injury problems which is why he hasn't featured that often.

Class. I'm gonna miss Benty. The way we've played lately we could actually accomodate him up front. Unfortunately for him, it would be in place of Benteke and that aint gonna happen. We're playing well enough to suit Bent's game though.
Hopefully he'll bag a hattrick and then add a couple of mill back on his price tag.

Not quite sure about the fawning over our midfield currently.

They are all decent prospects but at times they turn themselves into trouble, do strange pirouettes and Wigan have run through us a good few times already.

I think they all have great potential and on and off have looked good but we don't half let teams waltz through us at times.

Hopefully Vlaar will step up next season after getting this one under his belt but he's brought none of the commanding leadership qualities we need from him.

We've given the ball away an awful lot when attacking too, to be fair Wigan look excellent on the break. They're a funny old team, still not sure how they're going down when they're capable of playing so well.
Title: Re: Wigan Athletic v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: supertom on May 19, 2013, 04:56:19 PM
Ridgewell jokes aside, I'd take Liam over any of our centerbacks right now.
Think we'll need two good ones in the summer. Baker isn't good enough. Clark is probably too much of a liability too, but his ability on the ball gives him more potential. I know Lamberts sworn off experienced domestic players, but I do think one area we're absolutely in desperate need of a experience is at CB. If not premier league, than an equal or better standard. That discounts Dutch football. We can look to ze German leagues, Spanish or Italian.

Good competition/replacement for Bennett is also vital.

I think there's more goals to come from us. Wiemann's having a nightmare. Take him off. Benty has disappeared since his goal. A nice send off, but I'd be tempted to give Bowery plenty of time up front. See what he can do.

Have to say, I'm still really unconvinced by Baker. People give him more leeway than Clark because as they put it he 'looks the part' - by which they mean he's taller. He makes more mistakes than Clark though, I think, and really big ones.

We ll win this in the second half no worry.

Hope we do but it still won't gloss over our appalling defence this season. Our centre backs just aren't good enough and Bennett isn't fit to wear a Villa shirt. That may sound harsh, but our goals conceded column doesn't lie.

I still don't rate Baker much, his positioning is awful and he is unbelievably clumsy.

I still don't rate Vlar much, his positioning is awful and he is unbelievably clumsy.

I'm not sure his positioning is anywhere near as bad as Baker's, but yes he's very clumsy and careless as well.

Vlaar needs to play alongside a dominating centre half, as does Baker.

Have to say, if i were a young, multi millionaire professional footballer today, with nothing really to play for in terms of glory or disgrace, and 90 minutes to see through before I go off on holiday for a month, with all the amazing free time options earning huge amounts of money opens up, I would absolutely coast through this game, and not do anything to risk an injury which would entirely fuck up my holiday plans.

Sometimes we have the ball in the final third and we knock it all the way back to Guzan.

I agree with keeping hold of the ball but there are times they seem to go backwards on purpose and all it does is allows the opposition a sniff of a goal. One of the reasons no clean sheets in 28?

Well only if you consider that that sort of inspiration is a finite thing and that maybe next season we won't get as many. So many strikes have come out of the blue when we've looked a bit toothless so they've been magical but it's not necessarily a tactic that can be repeated.

Anyway obviously it's great scoring crackers, just a daft theory!

Fucking hell we look well off the pace.

Eight minutes from the end of the season, Paul, nothing to play for (for the players, anyway).

It's not hugely surprising.

Even the fans have gone quiet.

It's not as if we're under the cosh, is it?

They're playing the last five minutes in the top flight for a long time, too. We're not. It is understandable if we've gone a bit off key.

I thought we would have been relying on Sunderland to not win at Spurs, which happened, and Wigan to not beat us, which happened.
