2 teams both with split personalities...the result will depend on which Liverpool turn up and how many mistakes we make at the back.

A draw would not be a bad result.

Lets roll back the years to a Wednesday night many years ago - maybe the best game I have ever seen - ...... was it 5-1?

I would take that Sunday ! And that was against a good Pool side - these are beatable

December 15th 1976. I was there ... pity ITV weren't (Derek Hales was apparently the bigger TV draw).

For Easter Sunday, it really depends whether the RedScouse can get Suarez well supplied (is he eligible and fit to play?) and whether Lambert can continue the hex on Rodgers.
Can Villa win three in a row? - My view is that we will get at least a point, possibly three (2-1 to Villa).

It was 5-1 at half time - we felt sorry for them second half - plus Emlyn Hughes was so pissed off he did all he could to stop us scoring more.

A lot of my friends that follow them seem to think we'll turn them over, and I wouldn't be surprised considering we seem to play better against 'footballing' sides such as Swansea, Reading, and Liverpool themselves.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Liverpool Pre-Match Thread
Post by: SoccerHQ on March 25, 2013, 09:20:38 PM
2-2, think they'll get a 90 + equaliser aswell.

Their front trio will be tough for our defence, plenty of pace and movement there but I really don't think the rest of their side is that great at all and Benteke bullied their back 4 at Anfield so with added attacking support help he can do again.

A point here and at Stoke would be fine imo as long as we beat Fulham.

I think the team will have gained a lot of confidence from the Reading and QPR wins so I wouldn't be surprised to see a win for us but unfortunately not a clean sheet. 3 - 2 to for us.

Benteke 41, Downing OG 61, Gabby 79.

Who cares for them.

Villa and Liverpool are both capable of putting in very good performances and also abysmal ones. It probably will end up coming down to whether or not Suarez has a good day or not. I assume a loss , would be delighted with a point.

We go into the game with a slight advantage over those around us in that they will all have played and we know what we need to do.  On paper, other results should go our way which would allow us to be less nervous about this game.  If Norwich can do something at Wigan we could give ourselves a great chance of putting a big margin between us and them and leap frog Southampton and Sunderland too.

2-1 Villa.

I'd take a draw - 2-2, with the rat on the wing supplying the rabbit faced racist cheat for both of theirs. I'd hope Suarez would get sent off for diving but the ref, Lee Mason (http://www.worldfootball.net/schiedsrichter/eng-premier-league-2012-2013/1/), hasn't sent anyone off this season so he'll probably get away with it. Should we have a 'guess-how-many-people-turn-up-for-kick-off-at-half-time-because-they-forgot-to-put-their-clocks-forward' poll?

Liverpool are eminently beatable. However they won't be as poor as they were against Southampton again and if they play well they should beat us in all honesty.

Should be a high-scoring game, I just fancy our defence to be slightly worse than theirs.

Absolutely spot on.  Believe it was Easter Monday 1979 and we did beat them 3-1 were 2 up at half time.  Remember Dixie Deehan beating the offside trap with a run through from half way and "megging" Clemence.   Think they conceded only 16 goals all season on their way to the title?

Bent fit eh?

Any news on Clark? I've not heard any suggestion he is out, but he had to come off in the week.

I'd stick to the 433 to begin with, CNZ to come on as the game opens up second half. Probably Delph in for Bannan I think. Would be a bit weird to play Delph or Bannan on the right of the three, although we've done it before.

Delph for bannan if it was me.
With sylla and Westwood in the side it would give Delph a bit more freedom to go forward.

Injury update

Quote
Darren Bent is back in contention for the big Easter Sunday clash with Liverpool.

Bent has recovered from a foot injury and a flu bug and trained this morning after missing the Reading and QPR games.

Karim El Ahmadi is also available after missing the QPR clash with an ankle issue.

Nathan Baker had to come off in the 3-2 win over Harry Redknapp's side due to concussion but the brave centre-half is going to be fine for Sunday.

Fabian Delph missed the Reading and QPR games through suspension but he will give Paul Lambert a boost by making himself available.

Ciaran Clark and Brett Holman are the only doubts for the Reds encounter.

Clark injured his shoulder in the latter stages of Republic of Ireland's clash with Austria while Holman is nursing a hamstring problem.

Both internationals will face late fitness tests as Lambert waits nervously over their availability.

Lambert said: "Most of the lads came back today and we'll see how they are.

"There are one or two with little niggles.

"Ciaran came off for Ireland. Brett never trained this morning. We will see how those two lads are.

"Fabian is back from his suspension and Karim is back fit.

"Darren is back. He had a little flu bug last week but he is okay.

"He trained this morning."

On Baker, he joked: "Nathan landed on his head so he is alright!

"He will throw his body at things and will go and compete.

Off the pitch he is a different lad, a quiet lad. But when it's a matchday, he will certainly throw himself into things and put his head in.

He has had some terrific blocks for us throughout the season. He is a young lad who is learning but in the last few weeks he has been excellent for us."

In other positive news, Marc Albrighton - who has been out for two months with a broken foot - returned to full training this week.

But the boss sounded a note of caution regarding a quick recall.

He added: "Marc has trained the last few days but it is still a big ask because he has been out for three months."

2-1 Villa
Benteke 14
Weimann 78
Suarez 51

Villa park packed to the rafters and rocking!!!

Come on you Lions!!!

Sounds about right to me.

Score and scorers, agreed.

I forsee a different route to the win, though, perhaps a little more like this:

Suarez 3 (blatant handball, ref doesn't see)
Benteke 45+2 (goalmouth scramble)
Weimann 82 (nutmegs Reina from 15 yards).

At 84 minutes there will be a protracted Suarez "injury" after he trips over a blade of grass (but somehow contrives to get Delph sent off for it), ending with whistle at 90+7 after Liverpool get 8 on target but fail to score against our ten men.

I would bring Delph back in and if Clark is out, I would go with:

                    Guzan

Lowton    Vlaar    Baker    Bennett

      Sylla    Westwood   Delph

Weimann        Benteke     Gabby

I thought Bannan did fine in the last two games, but I did feel we were lacking a a dynamic presence in midfield.  For all his faults, Delph does give us that.

United have such a strong squad they can easily rest 6 or 7 and still pick a team to rip sunderland apart- they remember th way sunderland fans celebrated when utd missed out in the last minute last season - i expect united to hammer them!

Yes but Old Whingealot himself still picks players who he thinks will do a job. Hernadez and Rooney + Young should have enough to back a couple v MONsunderland

According to Lawro QPR would be sixth - yep Top 6 side based on his predictions

Lowton - Vlaar -Clark -Baker is our strongest backline. Bennet is suspect and Lowton is a card away from a two match ban. Hope they have been working on things at Bodymoor. This is make or break for our survival ....

Still undecided what the result will be. Haven't had a great feeling about the game since they lost to Soton as I expect them to respond. But with it looking like we will get a good crowd, it has raised my optimism a tad. I'll still go for 2-1 to them. With them getting a late goal (Stevie G getting it no doubt).

I don't like having the pressure on us now. Todays results, and then a TV game a day after is not good. More often than not when we really need to pull out a result we bottle it. I'm hoping it's not the case after 2 on the spin. I'll take a point from this. Liverpool are there for the taking though so we should go for it. The trouble is nerves, tension.
Bloody Wigan. Bloody Southampton. Bastards.

I really hope the kids do us proud tomorrow.

To be fair though, the West Ham game was as high pressure as they come and we just about did it. That hopefully put our live TV jinx behind us (seeing as we gave a decent showing against Citeh too). Not too mention the QPR game which although not televised, was still probably the most high intensity, nerve-shredding, heart-attack inducing game played at VP for many a year. I think the players have grown a pair in the last month or so. Still not very confident about tomorrow, but if we do lose it is unlikely to be because we 'bottle it' IMO.

From the O/S yesterday.

Quote
There are now less than 1,000 tickets left for the big Easter Sunday clash with Liverpool.

Fans have been snapping up seats over the last few days at an electric rate, with over 1,000 sold each day - and 200 already this morning.

Seats are now extremely limited in all areas of the ground.

The Ticket Office will reopen at 9am on Sunday prior to kick-off.

But you can also get online now and snap up your seat from the online box office.

We urge supporters who were planning to buy tickets on the day of the game to check availability before travelling to the match.

Fans are advised to set out earlier than usual to get to the game due to the ongoing poor weather conditions.

Please also be advised that there are planned engineering works on the railways, which will disrupt journeys.

And clocks go forward in the early hours of Sunday so please be sure to account for this time-change.

I don't think we will. But we could. Liverpool gave stuck four or more past Wigan, Swansea, norwich and Fulham. I think they've scored more goals per game at this stage than they've done for years (mid nineties?) and this villa defence is the worst I think I've seen

Clark is out. I'm also surprised he's keeping the same midfield three. I thought delph has been the pick of the midfield recently.

Still, bannan and weimann are our lucky mascots

I guess we'll get a feel for whether baker is a better bet than Clark at centre back as many feel. I'm not convinced personally. I also hope Bennett is fully committed and alert as downing has been playing well recently.
