Title: More interested in booze and abuse than football
Post by: UK Redsox on March 09, 2013, 08:01:33 PM
I can't get my head around the way some of our supporters behave at away games**.

Yet again I was in an area with some people who were far more interested in abusing the home fans than watching the game. One bloke in particular kept up a stream of swearing directed at the Reading fans. This was only interrupted when he turned his attention to abusing the referee and players (of both teams). I'm not even sure that he saw the goals because he seemed to spend most of the time staring/gesturing at the home fans.

It wouldn't have been so bad if he'd had an extensive vocabulary of swear words but it was just 90 minutes of cnut, wanker and fcuk.

He missed the first five minutes of the second half because he had to get in one more beer.

I wonder if these people are arseholes all week or whether they just become this way at football matches.

(** yes, I know, every club has them but I only have to put up with our knobheads)

It's sad that a few people like that spoil things for the majority .

It's always been the same. Just ignore them and concentrate on supporting the team.

It annoys me, but I console myself with the fact that it must be much worse for the 5 or 6 decent Small Heath fans that exist.

there are many great things about following Villa away......unfortunately the lottery of who you might be sat next to isn't one of them.  The majority of away trips are great but every now and again there are a few drunken idiots who are only interested in kicking off.

"Drunken idiots kicking off" sounds like a great idea for half-time entertainment in the centre circle!
Winner is the one who manages to play the ball forward and stay on his feet.

Would certainly be better than zorb racing

The games I've been away to over the last couple of seasons have all been quite pleasant. West Ham away 2 seasons back was the last time I got lumbered next to some asshole who didn't watch the football for a minute, just kept his neck at 90 degrees abusing west ham fans, I was embarrassed for the man more than anything he looked the wrong side of 50.

In general I'd say I'm more interested in booze and abuse than football.

But I don't go to any away games so it's not really much of an issue.

Hasn't this been the away game experience for the past 50 years?

There was a lad I worked with in the Company's training department in the early 80's who was also a Villa Fan. However there was a big difference between me and him. On Monday morning following a home game I wanted to talk about what happened on the pitch but this lad had absolutely no idea even though he was at Villa park. All his match day experience was based around how he abused, kicked and punched some away fan. How many fights he got involved in and how funny it was to be held at Queens road for 24 hours. He couldn't name any of our players or had any idea about the score or result of the match.

This topic seems to be a common thought amongst us. A small minority caysing grief for everyone else. I dare say that all it will take is a few good home fans to pick them off and maybe they won't do it again when they realize they are on their own

It's global and not restrticted to football - just returned to my hotel from University Oval, Dunedin where England got a relatively alarm-free draw after a poor first innings effort but yesterday (Saturday) was notable for some kiwi youths who just wanted to be off their faces and shout inanely "xxxxxx (whichever cricketer was fielding nearest) on the piss" made even worse by the whining accent.
All forgiven at 4.00am watching events from Reading on Sky NZ !

No. Back in the day they could get on with kicking each others heads in, smashing bottles in each others faces, attacking the police, and thowing bananas on the pitch in one part of the terrace while the rest of us watched the game in another part.

You could report them to the club, and eventually the club might stop selling to those sort of people. Just worth a try.

In an ideal world yes Michael, but unlikely to be successful sadly.

It would also help if stewards started policing the "no standing" rule. Sitting does tend to calm people down and also makes it easier for stewards to spot those people that are acting up.

Yesterday Reading had a row of seats designated for people who could not stand (Wolfie was in that row). The two rows in front were covered with a tarp so that people were not standing directly in their view.

A practical approach but also an admission that despite the announcement that standing was not permitted, they had no intention of enforcing the rule.

I can't remember the last time i sat down at an away game, i don't think any away fans do anymore.

Newcastle away.

I had just spent two days on a stag do in Bournemouth so I was rather glad of my seat.

All very noble and I've seen it done, but it can cause more trouble than it's worth. For a start, you don't know how many of them are with the miscreants and if the stewards/police spot it, you can end up getting thrown out or worse yourself.  Sometimes the stewards overreact and relatively minor issues become nasty very quickly (there are loads of examples of this on youtube). Best to just report it and move away.

I was too pissed to notice any misbehaviour yesterday. 3 hours in The Gateway pub before the game. Missed our second goal because we were in the beer queue.

It's just football in general isn't it? Just be thankful it's not like some clubs where it's a not quite so small minority who behave like that.

I went yesterday with a girl from Reading...fortunately she'd been in the Villa end before so knew what to expect but many of our lot were on top form, especially with racism. I honestly didn't think we had a racism issue but I do now.

Thats the problem with all seater stadiums. Thats horrible sinking feeling at a sold out away match when you have four empty seats next to you at five past three, you now whats coming.

Certainly don't need any of that in the away end.

As I have said before it is still there with a small minority as a matter of course but tends to become more prevalent with larger groups after drink. I have been at the wrong end of it at our away games from our scum more than VP in the recent past. However it is at away games that you have the toxic mix of more alcohol and aggressive fans in a confined space.  I can genuinely say that I do feel comfortable at VP nowadays even without colours. Something that has taken a long time to get right.

It is long overdue. Thing is Aftab, there still seems a low turn out from the Asian community considering the local population.

Oh well don't get me going on "locals" not supporting Villa. Whilst people of my generation had a genuine racism fear now days that is no longer an issue. The problem is that  whilst over 90% of the Asians (males) love football majority are  f  in gloryhunters and I do hate them for that. They are in and around me friends family etc and I detest them when it comes to discussing football and I annoy them intensely by refusing to have a debate. I only have to hear " I support Manu " and I feel physically sick.  OK rant over!

There was an agressive reaction when we got the equaliser, as the section nearest the Reading fans on the right hand side surged towards the barrier.

On reflection I would rather have a mardy bunch of fans that have goal music. I don't think I have ever seen a camper sight than 20,000 people all mincing to the darts music and shouting "oi, oi, oi!".

We were right next to the fence behind the goal, the bloke in front of me spent most of the game communicating with the Reading fans, but in good way, he was constantly shouting at someone he seemed to have befriended and eventually exchanged scarves with him, at the whistle they were shaking hands over the dividend fences, almost brought tears to my eyes.

Didn't see any trouble as such yesterday, quite a few inebriated fans but hey what's new.
There was banter with Their lot particularly after both goals , then I saw one pissed up fan goading there fans after the game near the villa coaches.
Other than that seemed fine at the WMP that travelled up id say had a fairly relaxed afternoon.

That Blade is on a right cushy number, getting paid to watch the Villa in his hi-viz jacket every week.
