So Bannan's back. Well, at least he probably won't be played as a holding midfielder - THAT was one of the most baffling decisions in history. I do not understand leaving out Zog though, not one bit.

Congratulations to Sylla, though, first start and in such a big game. Go and make it yours, son.

I can only imagine NZogbia is carrying some sort of injury. Either that or Lambert fell down the stairs this morning and bumped his head.

I thought Weimann looks a bit leggy and could do with resting. Maybe N'zogbia has a got a knock. Come on lads, lets get a quick start like at Goodison, UTV.

Nzogbia did not have the best game Monday but nor did Gabby , but he was looking damn fine in recent games . Strange decision . Bannon , dont get what the player does but hopefully we will see two assists at least off him.

N'Zogbia was utter shit Monday and deserves to be dropped. You can question the wisdom of picking Bannan, but we don't exactly have many options and hopefully the rest will have done him good.

Post by: ozzjim on March 09, 2013, 02:21:24 PM
Thing is now is the time when he lives and dies by decisions like that one. We lose by the odd goal and look generally unthreatening, leaving our main creative force in the last 6 weeks out, especially away from home, will appear a very poor decision that I would expect questioned in the boardroom. Win, and he is a genius that knew NZogbia needed a bit more motivation.

Watching Skysports and looking at Merson's dyed hair, i'm convinced he's morphing into Frankie Howerd.

It takes some skill to make real hair look like a wig.

Unbelievable selection. Lambert has lost the plot. Obviously has gone there to avoid defeat with Baker at full back and an extra midfielder, I do not understand why all of a sudden he's abandoning his 'you attack, we attack' mantra if he believes in it so much.
God help us today.

It's quite bizarre. Especially away from home on the break N'Zogbia can be lethal. Unless the manager has gone a bit nuts, you have to think he's got a knock or something.

I guess the justification for Zog's absence is that when he's not on his game he can get frustrated easily and disappears from the game. Gabby doesn't hide and gives more for the team. Big game for Bannan though. If he's in Charlie's position now is the time to show what he can do.

Bannan has not even been on the bench recently, I'd assumed he had been sent away to play with Ireland for the rest of the season and to prepare himself mentally for his summer exit from the club.  I noticed he did not appear in Strachan's Scotland squad announcement earlier this week either.  A strange one to see him there today no doubt but if he sets Benteke up for a brace today none of us will complain I guess.
Title: Re: Reading v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: paul_e on March 09, 2013, 02:30:55 PM
I actually agree with the changes.  Sylla is very raw but was the sensible choice to replace Delph.  Once you've done that, Nzogbia doesn't work hard enough for it to be a midfield 3 so it's a lot of pressure on Sylla to perform.  So you bring in Bannan who'll play a little deeper and work a lot harder closing down and you're giving Sylla a bit of extra protection to see how he settles.  It's a touch negative but I totally agree with the thinking.  Baker at left back is slightly strange but I seem to remember us having a few problems from their right in the home game so it's probably to account for that.

This is what I expected from Lambert, he's picking as a team not individuals and fitting them in as best as he can.

Bannan in, N'Zogbia out?

Arguably N'Zogbia is the one player who generally looks like he could create something.

Bizarre selection in my eyes. Really thought Charlie could pull Reading apart.

Clark will never play in midfield under Lambert. He doesn't rate him there and has said as much.

I was really looking forward to the game today but seeing that team selection, I'm starting to think Lambert has a very large wedge on us to go down.

Playing three genuine midfielders is a good idea. We should be a lot firmer at the back too.

I am not sure who I am trying to kid.

If he wanted NZogbia out, I'd have been happier seeing Bennett moved forward. Where the fuck is El Ahmadi?

Now would be a good time for Sylla to prove to be another  'Benteke moment' from Lambert.

I think so.

Our confidence must have been rock bottom for months now, it affects everything, routine tasks start to instil fear and doubt, and the little things start to go wrong, five yard passes straight to the opposition (Baker just now), that sort of thing.

Everyone did well in that build-up. Redemption for every single one of them, as they were all below par at various points in that half. Great, patient passing, keeping the pressure on them in their third, good ball by Weimann is unlucky, I think it was Benteke who fought really well to get the ball back into the danger zone, unlucky from Bannan as that touch out of the sky was very deft, and what a finish from Gabby - absolutely battered that ball like it had insulted his mum.

Long half in store lads!

Great team goal despite some extensive fannying about. Credit to Lowton for winning that header, Bannan and Gabby.

Sylla looks a proper tidy player. Surely should have been in for the last few games.

Reading are there for the taking, if we don't win today, I'm not sure we ever will.

Some fairly good stuff in that first half, and two good goals too. Sylla has impressed me, and looks like he can do a more than competent job of screening the defence from midfield - it'll be interesting to see how he gets on against a better set of midfielders. Westwood has also played as well as I've seen him do for a while - maybe thst's the impact of having someone, Sylla, alongside him who can do the dirty work.

Defence looks just as crap as ever, sadly, although Vlaar hasn't done too badly, really. Bannan, though, has been poor. It's a shame, because I actually do think he has a lot of talent and could be a good player, but he just doesn't seem to have the mental side of things sorted.

I reckon we should push on for a third goal. Reading really go for it, and I don't believe our defence will be able to keep them out.

Looked nice and tidy......a little too sideways for me, but solid enough.

Good to hear , better option than kea by sounds of it.
Reading fans are getting restless - another goal could kill them off- i think we need to score again .

Agreed. His technique looks like that of the studious learner rather than the prodigy. Still, it gets the job done, and like you say, he looks a smart player as well as a physical one.
