Given. Dunne. N'Zogbia.

Poor.

I'd count Clark as senior now to be honest. He's no kid anymore. Baker possibly too, though he'd not played much before last season.
But yeah. Almost all gash to a man.

How we miss Sir Stan at the moment!

Vlaar.
Yep. He's distinctly average, even on the few occasions he's not injured. Concrete my chuffing arse!

Baker played less than 20 games!! I would include albrighton utter shite!

Bannan. He's 23 now, not a kid, over 50 premiership games and is getting worse. CHOINKS.

In first 6 names at there peak there approx 70m of talent in there! It's appalling

Gabby offers next to nothing.

I genuinely don't get this "he's one of us" thing that seems to make him exempt from the need to deliver.

He's a poster boy for our delusions of adequacy this season.

Gabby not scored at home for 17 months or so that shocking!!

His record is abysmal.

I appreciate the counter arguments about being played out of position yada yada yada, but really, his record of not delivering goes back too far for it all to be written off for that.

Nowhere near as good as some seem to think he is.

We have had Gabby, Bent, Ireland and N'zogbia available for the majority of the season. If they'd all played all season like they fucking meant it, we'd have scared most teams in the division to death. They have let our younger players down with their lack of leadership. With Dunne and Porcelain Ron both out as long as they have been, one of these four should be captain by now. Their collective overall contributions have boiled my piss more than anything else in this season

Up until they recently went on loan Hutton and Warnock as well.  N'Zogbia has only really started picking up in the last few weeks and El Ahmadi and Holman have also contributed little.

Who takes the flak for the senior players woefully under-performing? The judgement of McLeish in buying Hutton and N'Zogbia? Lambert's failure to accommodate Bent or get the best out of Ireland? Lerner for signing the cheques?

It seemed we'd got some sort of handle on the wagebill but this lot, along with the terminally injured Dunne and surplus to requirements Given have surely been the reason for us not being able to bring in proven players this season (well, that and Lambert's apparent preference to play young and hungry lads regardless).

A perfect storm where all our "name" signings over the past couple of years have utterly failed to perform consistently (Benteke excepted though I or 91% of you hadn't heard of him 7 months ago) has been a huge reason for our shiteness. This group of feckers could likely be the last bunch of experienced, highly paid players we have at Villa for a long time if L&L hang around.

Just reading this thread, I was thinking that you could put an XI together of experienced players who for one reason or another have offered very little for us this season:

                  Given

Hutton  Vlaar  Dunne  Warnock

          Makoun    El Ahmadi

                   Ireland

Holman         Bent      Gabby

All internationals and goodness knows how much they have cost the club in wages between them.

Yep.
Not forgetting Albrighton, Bannan and Clark on the bench.
Charitably, I have often thought that Lambert has been let down not by the players he's bought but by those he inherited. Had some of those above performed as they have done in the past at other clubs, the likes of Westwood, Bennett, Lowton, Baker and Weimann might have been more effective.

We're witnessing the perfect storm: senior experienced players taking the wages and less-experienced kids having the stuffing knocked out of them.

It depends on how you define 'Senior player'
Gabby, Bent, Vlaar, Given, CN'Z & Ireland. Yes.

I think it's a touch harsh to include the likes of Clark, Baker, Bannan in the list, though.
Kids they're not, I agree, but neither would I say that they can be termed as senior players either.

Did Vlaar have injury problems at Feynoord?
To my knowledge he didn't, so for him to be labelled 'Injury Prone' by some it a touch unfair, too.

The likes of Ireland make you sick. We could have three players in to do a job right up the spine of the side for his £65,000 per week, while he cannot even be bothered to use his talents to do the job of one man.

A bloody wastrel.

Vlaar has an horrendous injury record.

What types of injury though? I thought it was bad knee trouble, yet it seems to be his calf. How do you have a chronic calf problem anyway?

I'm not sure that Gabby belongs in this category. We're a better side with him in it and his lack of goals is, at least partly, explained by being asked to play a wide roll to accommodate Benteke.

He's 28 and only played 159 games in 9 years.

I don't see the point of Gabby personally .   One good game in 10 , does not score , no football brain .     Why squeeze him in the team just to play him , I suppose shows how poor we really are now.

I suppose with Gabbys record of playing out wide Lambert thought he'd suit as an wider player in a forward 3. He doesn't though, he's crap and so is the tactic. With 4 pure attacking players we still manage to score less than a goal a game and concede almost 2, the balance hasn't been right all season.

Watching him last night , he worked hard at times but I was just thinking championship player at best .

There are other wide attackers in the premier league that get a fair few goals. Gabby - if classed as a wide player still has a fucking shit record. He needs to go.

The 'Gabby out of position' thing is just ridiculous. He's still playing in an attacking role, his goal return would be bad for a centre half.

As has been said, he looks like a hard bastard, its about time he started acting like one.

Is this right? Jeez, knock 3 years off his age and that's still a poor return

3 seasons injury free at AZ, 10 appearances. This was due to the coach keeping with experienced players.
So you can really dis-count the 3 seasons at AZ
5 seasons at Feynoord, 132 appearances. He missed almost 2 seasons with 3 ligament injuries. His final 3 seasons at Feynoord were injury free.

I wouldn't go as far as to say he was injury prone, it's just that when he has an injury he's out for a while.

If he's one of us then he should start sitting in the holte for games. He did absolutely nothing on Monday.

I would love to see Gabby have his best game for 3 seasons on Saturday, tearing Reading a new arsehole and bagging a couple of class goals.
Same against QPR and Bindippers and then to score the winner against Wigan last game.
Oh how quiet some would be.

I've backed Gabby all season but it does get to a point where you think what does he actually offer. He's in the media every week saying how much he loves the club and wants to keep us up but then come match day he contributes nothing time and time again.
Maybe he's been mismanaged and played out of position or maybe he's just not that good.

I too would like nothing more than to see him tear Reading a new one on Saturday but sadly I doubt that he will.

We will have to wait and see. I hope he has a stormer and carries that on for the rest of the season. Doubt it, but it would be good to see.

Absolutely,  I'd love to see him just get the ball and fucking run at them every time. He's more than capable of scaring the shit out of Reading.
