Would have originally liked a more defensive line up, but City's team looks fairly defensive itself so maybe it'll be alright.

*prays*

Ha ha! I know what you mean mate - I'm the same! I somehow imagine we have better players than we really do, as if we've magically signed some players between the last game and this.

And then every week I see the teamsheet and think 'Oh. Right.'

When you think of the pain paul mcgrath played through for the villa its sad that vlaar is missing - sometimes you have to play with a bit of pain for the cause.

This is what riles me. A simple Google search would have revealed Ron is more play-doh than concrete. Yet in two transfer windows, we signed no other experienced defenders. That's just f*cking retarded.

Yeah, it's like the bit on Bullseye when Jim Bowen used to say "Here's what you could have won...".

Except it was usually a speedboat. And the contestant lived in Stoke.

Wish we would have gone a bit stronger in the middle with Sylla coming in. Wasn't it Viera that recommended him to Mancini and said he's the new Yaya?? Tonight we could have found out if he is!
Typical PL though 4 forwards again, apparently attack is the best form of defence, but not really.

Come on Villa!!!!!!

Delph has done really nicely.

I agree. I had a right old rant about Delph a few weeks ago, and have to admit I'd just given up on him. Since then, he's got much better and has gone a very small way to suggesting that he is learning, which in turn means that maybe, just maybe, Lambert is capable of improving players.

I'm far from convinced about that last bit, though.

Exactly how I feel, I'm afraid. No matter how poor they might be playing, you just know that Tevez or Dzeko or Toure or someone can come up with something for them.

I'm just hoping their players have lost their drive, really.

Well yeah, but we're playing well. Whatever happens this game, we need to continue playing well for the rest of the season.

Trouble is we'll play well against City for 80 minutes, lose with a bit of pride 1-0, then be absolutely pigging awful against Reading.
If we were 2-0 up with 15 mins left would you take the draw if offered?

He's sort of the opposite of what I wrote before about Delph - he just hasn't improved at all, in fact I think he has got steadily poorer, and so in turn that worries me that the coaching staff don't have the ability to improve our players.

To me he's as error magnetic as Titus Shambles, without the physical presence and turn of pace Shambles has. So basically yeah, he's not as good as Titus Shambles. It looked like a foul, he was tripped.  We got no luck there and no luck with thee Rodwell injury in a strange way which has improved them.  We deserved better for our performance in the first half hour but the longer it went on, the more they came into it and they turned the screw alarmingly quickly.

We are not a particularly good side but we are not a particularly lucky side either.

That said, we have been letting Tevez coast into the penalty box unmarked repeatedly, I have been screaming at the fecking TV.  You can see both midfielders and defenders looking at him as he strolls towards the position Cazorla scored from last week - they just haven't managed to pick him out.  Wish these kids would pissing learn from their mistakes.

I'm with Risso on this one mate. There's no way Clark should be anywhere near our starting 11. For that to have happened, Lambert needed to buy A- A defender in Jan and B- A new pair of glasses at any point this season to notice how godawful he's been.
Our defence isn't good enough almost to a man. But Clark's persistent howlers take the biscuit. He's a liability who should have been replaced ASAP in Jan.

How many points do we have after going a goal down this season? Less than 3-5 tops I reckon. Tempted to switch off.

I think it is 2 - Albion and Swansea away.

Apparently it's two. Oh joy. I'm really starting to think we are going down.

Funnily enough, I spent a good bit of the first half thinking 'this team will be quite good in the championship'. Delph looks good. Westwood not as good as when he started. Benteke and CNZ struggling to impose themselves. Bennett has been a good outlet. Clark and Baker were doing reasonably well until  . . .  We've struggled with Silva and Tevez's interplay once their sub came on
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Manchester City Match Thread

And for what we did spend on Sylla and Dawkins, as well as earned from Warnock and Hutton, no one could seriously tell me we couldn't scrape enough pennies together to buy a defender better than Clark and Baker. There's plenty of defenders who can head a ball and throw in a tackle, with enough concentration not to cock up 2-3 times a match. We could get better in League 1-2. I don't care if Clark's "okay" on the ball for a centre half. He's a nightmare.
I can't blame Randy on this one. There was enough money there to sign players. Good players? Maybe not. But I'd take an average defender over the mediocrity we currently have.

Risky decision by Clark to play with the ball there, yes. But he was fouled. Dzeko took his legs as Clark did the drag back. Bollocks decision by the ref

Honestly? I'm at the game so haven't seen replays.
For me, Dzeko was nowhere near the ball and brings him down. Clark shouldn't be trying that there, but he outskilled Dzeko and he brought him down from what I see in replays.

Yes because Clark isn't good enough to be in the team. He shouldn't be playing. If he's Lambert's only option it's Lamberts fault. He had a month to get in some defensive cover and he did nothing. He also chose to sign Vlaar who had a dodgy injury record.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Manchester City Match Thread
Post by: Rigadon on March 04, 2013, 08:59:49 PM
He is fouled, but he shouldn't have been doing that.

He was barely touched and gets out-muscled every single week by every opposition centre forward.  He's physically not imposing enough and isn't good enough on the ball and, worst of all, makes stupid mistakes in almost every game he plays.  Somebody compared him to Titus Bramble, but I don't think he's as 'good' as that.

Lowton has also had a mare.  The defending from a corner in particular was spectacularly poor and has given the ball away every time he's had it in their half.

Delph has played well and Benteke / Gabby have done OK.  Guzan again has been good.

This is looking very much like a "play like that against *insert fellow struggler* and we'll be OK" kind of routine loss.  Defend like that against any premier league club and you'll struggle.

We can keep bemoaning fouls that should be given, but it's players putting themselves in these positions in the first place when they fanny around too much or look like headless chickens. It's the same with Southampton's penalty that shouldn't have been. We put ourselves in a stupid position. In this game refs will always make bad calls. Don't give them a chance to make a call against you in or around your own box. It's piss poor be it overall organisation or individual errors we've been like a school team's D team at the back this season.

Definitely a foul on Clark. Even if his foot was slipping having it kicked away removed any chance of him recovering.

It was a bad decision by him to do what he did, but what I don't understand is that when we try to close defenders down there is always a spare one to get the opposition out of trouble. Clark had absolutely no options there. Where was the full back or the deep midfielder?

What we don't need now is two dick penalty decisions like we had at Eastlands.

Yes it's just ridiculous how little idea any of our back line and midfield have in what they're supposed to be doing. For all that we have some talented attacking players, we never get them in the game nearly enough.
Just want this game over with now and move on to the next two, with hopefully some kicked asses walking out onto the pitch (WITH a gameplan).

Well done Clark
How the the conversation changes on this thread amazes me. This is the best thread for any ex-pat to log onto, on any site. This site gives me eyes, like i was back home, at Villa Park, tonight.
Few beers with the lads befpre the game, after doing a 6-2 shift. Walking from the Eddy or the Vine to the game.
Getting in sight of the Holte End now.
There we go, i can see the brickwork and the badge now, i'm safe.
'' Burger with onions please mate""
'' That's 3.50 please mate''
'' Cheers mate. Se you after the game for another.''

And then you get to the steps and the handrails.

There is no better place to be in the World to me, nowhere.

Your in. The atmosphere builds, minute by minute, until you can't wait any longer. Up the stairs you go.

And then it hits you. YOU ARE IN THE HOLTE END AT VILLA.

And there you will spend the rest of your life, no matter where you are in the world.

HOLTE ENDERS IN THE SKY.

UTV tonight everbody.
Please move this to the Old sloppy bastard thread. Cheers.

As promising as Lowton and Westy have been at times, they've faded a lot in recent weeks, particularly Lowton. The whole defence is just struggling because they're all out of their depth.

For too many of our younger, less experienced players, this is too much too soon. Many just aren't good enough anyway.

Another hard luck story.

Delph has been fantastic.  Benteke and Gabby ok.  Everyone else tries but aren't good enough. Dawkins looks like a player who nobody has heard of for a reason.

Time to clear out the manager, his "coaching" staff, the CEO and all the substandard players and malingerers.   Will it happen?   Not a chance.
