Decent article although slightly harsh saying arsenal have  never got close to winning the champions league- they were beating barcelona in the final until the dying minutes when barca hit 2 late  goals.

That was before they moved.

They are 6th in the all time CL league table without ever having won it. A SF and two QFs in last few years. Dont ever remember thinking they have much of a chance though.

It's like us being sixth in the all-time Premier League points table.

Arsenals crack at european glory is in the past , since the likes of henry, viera, cole, van persie, fabregas, nasri and others have been sold they have become another seliing club and no longer a force in european football- you cannot lose your best players like that and flourish

IIRC they weren't late goals. Both came in the second half granted. Barca would have been a goal up before Arsenal scored if Lehmann hadn't took one for the team and got sent off for smashing Eto'o when he was through on goal. Campbell scored from a free kick and they led at half time. Then Barca scored twice in the second half.

May 17, 2006 – Barcelona scored twice in the last 14 minutes to beat 10-man Arsenal in the Champions League final in Paris.

Interesting read, Dave. I would agree it was the quietest I've seen pre-match and had said just that to the two guys I was with just before bumping into you!

I liked the contrast you drew between the fixtures 6 1/2 years apart, and hope that we'll be in a better position to reclaiming some of the enjoyment and optimism by the end of this season.
