I'm finally getting round to archiving some of the best H&V material over the years.
This is the start - it's the Houller/McLeish seasons so far but older stuff will be added in time.

Good stuff dave !
-
Great idea.
-
Can I request Dave, 101 reasons to hate Doug, and a bit from a similar era when he was compared to Sadam Hussain?
-
Would it be feasible to scan all the back-issues?
It could be made accessible to Golden Muppets who donate more than a certain amount perhaps.
-
I understand that despite his death Saddam Hussein's family still have an ongoing legal interest in preventing anyone linking him or comparing him to Doug Ellis. Personally the older stuff the better for me. I'm not sure of the first H&V I bought but it would be a very early one. I found a lot of issues from '91 to '93 a while back and BFR was harshly treated in my opinion. I don't say that with hindsight either as I was always a Big Ron fan.
-
I reckon there is a 2014 'The Best of H&V' xmas annual in the making here ;-)
-
I'm 11 issues short of the full set, which is a shame.

And what about the paupers who cant afford it?
-
I'm currently one of those paupers but Dave's got to plan for his retirement.

Dave is a wealthy man who loves us all rich or poor :)

Is that similar to being a sandwich short of a picnic?
-
I don't know. I do know Dave is a miserable old bastard mind.
Do you think we should hire out contributors on the after dinner speakers circuit?
-
Just added the Ron Saunders interview from 1994.
-
Some classics in there. One of the things I miss about living away is buying h+v on the way to the ground and winding Percy up asking if it's the programme.
There was a Christmas edition a few years back that had a good yarn about a villa scarf handed down through the years.
-
Just wondering, how many do you print for each issue ? What was your best selling edition? And has the net hit sales ?
Also when was the first? I first remember buying it in the 1990 season I think.
-
I would've thought the net would have a positive effect on sales as more people would hear of it and you can probably buy it online?
-
Dave, a while back you said you were considering selling them as ebooks on amazon.
Any news on this? It'd be a great way for the expats etc to still get copies and presumably good for turnover too.
-
Young Doug was always a favourite regular feature of mine.
My favourite ever front cover is God looking down on the 94 Cup Final saying something along the lines of 'there'll be no treble on my planet this season'. Utterly brilliant, now we get photo's of grafitti on walls and some steps lol.

It's something I've got to chase up. Hopefully it won't take long to sort. in the meantime I've added a couple more pieces from 2000. http://heroesandvillainsfanzine.wordpress.com/

Is that guy for real? I've seen his letters in the past and thought it might be some nut case who you just let lose for our amusement.

Rantin' Risso.
I like it.

He continued writing under a pen name so as not to get lynched by a baying H+V mob every home game. That he was less than 50 yards from a cemetery must have been quite an adrenaline rush...
-
Is rob yates also known as risso?
Given his inability to construct a proper sentence, and that he appears to be an excitable 13 year old after too much Sunny D, I'd say it was more likely to be you.

Did he breathe properly? When I read his letters I have a mental image of him turning blue.

Some excellent stuff on this site - good reading.

Do you think that this 1993 image of Newcastle would be replicated by many today?
Newcastle United – One way or another, Keegan has worked miracles at this club, turning them from relegation probables into runaway champions-elect in the space of a year. Newcastle used to be long to the Robert Maxwell school of staying afloat, they were worse than Small Heath. I saw them lose at St James Park last Easter to a less than purposeful Millwall side and they played like a bucket of frogs. Now, things are going well once again for the Geordie giants and their masses pf long-suffering fans. However, there are still a few lads in the Gallowgate end who think it piquant to chivvy black players by making ape noises at them (not even Leeds do that anymore). Great club, great ground, mostly great fans. Will be an asset to the top flight.

Some great stuff there. Loved reading about Dalian and Deano again too. Interesting perspective seeing the adult view from back then. I was only about 12 when they were getting us second spot and winning us a league cup the following year but they could do no wrong in my eyes, but then again I had no background interest, and no notion of what went on behind the scenes. Didn't read the papers, and there was obviously not interwebnet back then.
In many respects very little has changed about us as fans, or the club. Probably the same for many clubs, bar the likes of Man City and Chelsea who've gained an innate smugness in recent years due to their money bought success.

I remember my gran - who is 94 - telling us about when her and her sister were 10 or so, and my great grandfather would go to the Villa, if they won, he'd come home all smiles with sweets for them. If they lost, he'd go to the pub, come home shitfaced, and angrily break things whilst my gran and her sister hid.
That's probably the one thing that never changes - the crushing disappointment when things have gone badly compared to the elation when things go in your favour. Once it stops doing that to you, you've really drifted away from it.

The one amazing thing about that Dwight Yorke article is that it took six years and four managers before he came good. Imagine a player staying in the reserves that long now?
-
2 in a day. Does anyone remember Ray Ranson?

If the below was genuine it would be fantastic. Though I suspect it was Simon Page or some other wit.
Why, I was taking the air at Bridlington only the other week when I engaged in conversation with a fellow sportsman. When he enquired as to my birthplace I replied Birmingham, to which he answered, ”Why, is that not the home of the Aston Villa Football Club? Such a fine institution. Your city must be mightily proud of them.” I heartily concurred with the fellow. And then soundly boxed his ears. A gentleman does not enquire of another gentleman’s antecedents. But enough of my ideas of etiquette. Suffice to say that no-one has ever favourably associated the city of Birmingham with the Small Heath club

Reminds me of when we went to a match at Palace in 73, or thereabouts. As we came off the M1 and onto the North Circular, the driver said 'you can put that map away'. A couple of hours later, the floodlights came into view. Craven fucking Cottage!
