Well, he's taken Bennett out of the equation.
But the MF looks very light.
Strange selection upfront unless Gabby is unavailable.

I can see Clark getting more yellows today unless someone is covering back to support him. Could have played Bennett in front of him: Bennett can attack down the left quite well and could have covered for CC ...

Need to see if clark or baker start at left back- bowery is a surprise but lets hope it pays off.

No idea why he doesnt give carruthers a chance- a direct wide man who will run at the opposition.

Just seen that bent is on bench if he's playing 2 up top seems strange he's chose Bowery over bent it's a bit to risky considering the importance of the game

Guzan, Lowton, Vlaar [c], Clark, Baker, Westwood, Delph, N’Zogbia, Bowery, Weimann, Benteke.
Is this Lambert playing effectively with wingers? - N'Zog and Bowery.
If so, they'd better be ready to do some tracking back otherwise we'll get sliced apart through the middle.

West Ham United starting XI: Jaaskelainen, O'Brien, Tomkins, Reid, Pogatetz, Noble, Diame, Nolan, J.Cole, Taylor, Carroll

Not good news Pogatetz has made it but at least it looks like he's playing full back so Benteke can have a good crack at Tomkins.

I assume we've picked Baker and Bowery to try to give us a bit of extra height.

Fuck it, it might work you never know. At least we seem to have dispensed with that five at the back bollocks.

Strong WHU midfield - 5 experienced midfielders against our 2 + 2 wingers. Not  good.

I reckon we'll line up:

Lowton  Vlaar  Clark  Baker
     Westwood  Delph
Weimann  N'Zog  Bowery
            Benteke

With West ham being exactly the same formation.

But then, so does KEA.

Almost every player we have to choose from worries me in one way or another. There is probably only Benteke and Guzan that I look at and think 'oh good, they're playing'. Maybe Weimann too for his 100% effort and commitment to the cause..

5-4 Villa then. Bowerty should be betterdefending corners.

We must win this. With Arsenal, Man U, Man C, Chelsea still to play we must start winning winnable games. 4 all season is shocking. (Cue English pedant's)

Agree. Dawkins must have been considered over Bowery. The extra height point seems true. Ireland and Lichaj must be calling their agents.

Ireland's agent owes him nothing, he must be a cross between David Blaine and Paul Daniels to bag that scrote the contract he's got here.

Regardless of what happens, I think it's the right call selecting Baker at the back over Bennett to add height, and also Bowery over the other options. We need all the help we can get to deal with the aeriel threat.

What was the point of January? The results were utterly dire and the one player that we bought, who might help, who the manager has recently spoken so highly of, and is meant to provide some muscle to our midfield can't start a game. We need this win so badly, I hope he's got it right. I suppose no Bennett helps.

I never said it did. You could play Sylla and remove CNZ I suppose. Don't stick him wide though as he is useless

Main concern is our LB position - Baker is probably an upgrade on Stevens/Bennett but he got ripped apart v Everton at the start of the season.

It is not 442. It is 4231 and Lambert does not rate Bent in that formation. I agree that the system must change to suit the reliable scorer.

When you have the choice international manager's have then just picking the same players doesn't make sense. We're Aston Villa in a relegation scrap with one of the PL best ever forward on the bench. Not holding the ball and unselfishly bringing others into play, rather letting the ball bounce off him and generally just looking shite.

Weimann though works hard, if not scoring is not that good a footballer all round yet, so needs to take his chances. Gabby will hold a ball and run defenders, which Andi tries, but he is a striker and needs to score the chances like that to be more than just a Paul Dickov!

That's just it Ozz. Why not start with that given that we have him for such a shirt period of time, and the manager spoke of him glowingly during the week? Something different, not expected. We fucking need a bit of that. Bowery is an honest hard working lad who is not a winger or wide player. So why play him there?

How is Delph still playing over Sylla? I've never seen Sylla play but I bet he knows how to tackle, pass, run and position yourself correctly.

Weimann should've scored, but it happens.

That's the frustration, there really is nothing much between any of the teams from about 6th downwards, they are all pretty crap. As is often said, 4 or 5 teams playing for the Champions League, maybe a couple more for the Europa Cup and the rest all trying to avoid relegation

Dowd would have given a penalty for Vlaar on Carroll.
Well, Carroll was already going to ground so I can see why the ref gave nothing.

Exactly. That would make no difference to Red Phil.
