Let's get it started then. He better be the Messi of the MLS or else I'm completely lost for words.
Welcome to Villa.
-
Well good luck Dawk, not your fault that our management and ownership are completely incompetent.
-
Smack a few of these in son and you'll be alright by me.

He's done very well in the MLS, just as it's been getting incrementally better in that league. It's about the standard of the Championship now, more or less, so he's coming to the right club in terms of where we aspire to play.
-
Who ?
-
We're still Hitchens, Harris and Dennett short of the Four Horsemen (though we do have a Bennett, maybe that counts).
-
Speaking from the USA....... he really has done very well over here. Its a good signing. Unfortunately, it s a loan deal.

David Pleat with all his Tottenham connections says he's a good player. Let's hope.
-
Welcome Simon.
-
Welcome and all that, but absolutely not what we needed.
-
Cool. I liked The God Delusion.
-
Why not just bring the Fonz back?
-
Welcome and all that, but absolutely not what we needed.
I think that's the point. I don't have a problem with the player himself, but we needed defensive reinforcements.
-
Again, welcome, and I will give you my full support so long as you put in all the effort you can.
Do not worry of those doubting and belittling you, they have no idea who you are so they conclude you must be shit. If you haven't been in The Sun, SSN or FM2013 then you're nobody.
-

I think most people are worried that we've not addressed our main areas of weakness.
He might turn out to be ace, but he needs to turn out so pretty much immediately, and however ace he is, it's not going to help our feeble defence much.
It's not about thinking he's shit, or he can't do it, it's about the players we haven't signed, not the ones we have.

Precisely. I wish him all the luck possible and hope he's brilliant, but we needed a defence.
-
Good luck to him.
Did he ever get a sniff of a chance at Spurs? Ever?
-

From about 14th/15th down, the teams aren't very good, Championship level probably, so I don't get your point. We need stay up, so Championship standard players can't be that bad if there is so many of them in the PL.
Not many better players will join for the money we're willing to pay.
-
Good luck mate, I think we'd have been better off with Stephen Hawking at centre back though.
-
Good luck, we need it that's for sure. We do need someone strong at the back though. I will be astonished if we don't.
One thing to note though in many games this season if we would have converted chances we have made it would relieve pressure off the back. However it would be nice to be pretty sound from back to top.

The defence has been shit, in most part, by the strange formations we've been playing. We've been far too narrow and the midfield leave the defence exposed.
As to the set piece issue, I seem to recall Benteke has been responsible for our fair share if goals conceeded from set pieces.
-
Well scratch my piles. Welcome, Mr Dawkins.

I disagree. Would you not rather see us play to win?

It's very hard to win if you concede the number of goals we have.
-
Erm, Hi Simon. Fancy a pint? So who are you friends with in here then?

I always want us to play to win, but we have to score far too many goals to outdo the goals (very soft goals) we let in.

Have to admit, I've been close to bored with how rubbish we've been. If it weren't so bleak it would be dreary.
-
Welcome to the lad. As useful an addition as a canoe made out of rice paper, but welcome all the same.
-
Apparently he's a free agent in the summer, so we'll be right at the front of the queue of clubs trying to sign him!
Ah, I hope he's brilliant for us. You never know. Best of luck to him and all that.
-
Cool. I liked The God Delusion.
I was going to say I would be more exited if we'd signed Richard Dawkins.
-
But welcome Simon and good luck.
-
His contract is up this summer, so he will be free to sign if he is any good. Fingers crossed he is a good player.
We have no wingers of any use. Now we have width.
-
Is he a winger then? Wiki just says attacking midfielder.
-
How utterly bizarre this signing is though. On Sky they said it was to cover for Albrightons absence - how long has Albrighton been out for?! Does this mean we are going to stick with 4-4-2 finally.
-
At least it seems he can score. Just imagine, a MF down VP that scores more than 1 goal every few months.
-
Is he a winger then? Wiki just says attacking midfielder.
Wiki is right. he is a bit like Nzog, can play wide or center. Decent deadball.
I have sene him play live over here. He is a hard worker but imho a bit slow.. and thats in the MLS.
Looks like a signing for a championship bench to me. I think the club are just planning to lose one or two of our attacking mids next season in the championship and saw an opportunity here with a loan to buy.
-
-
At least he can finish.
-
how old is he?
-
how old is he?
25 years and 2 months.
-
If he had signed with a CB , I would be a lot happier. Its just the wrong position we need for me . Good luck to him anyway .
-
So this guy is potentially N'zogbia's replacement in the Championship next season, scary.
-
I remember watching lots of goals from Delph on You Tube before we bought him.
-
Well he's got his head screwed on joining on loan
-
Judging by the amount of flak Bannan has been getting,
if Dawkins is our corner taker from now on, he'll be an instant hit.
-
In Simon we trust.
-
For what it's worth (probably not much) on my Football Manager game he went on loan to Rochdale in this window, then went to Crawley on a free. Has spent 4 years in league 1 for various clubs managing 9 goals in 130 games.
-
How does a youth player get to 25 without playing a game for his club? That must be a record surely? Frankly speechless but welcome to the nuthouse Simon. I suspect Lambchop will stick you in the youth squad for a few months. If all goes well you should be making your debut before you're 30.
-
A 25 year old AM that's playing for the San Jose Earthquakes. Lambert, are you taking the fucking piss?
-
Simon who?
-
On the Beeb it said he has a history of injury and Tottenham released him in '09 before resigning him in 2011.
-
People linking to his wondergoals on Youtube, he's scored 14 goals in 2 years in the US amateur league, following his time at Leyton Orient, so frankly, you can stick the highlights up your arse.
-
Rohan Ricketts said he's better than Gabby........

No you're right. Writing him off a couple of hours after he's signed is obviously better than hoping he might actually be useful and showing that he has the ability to score a few.

Oh okay, let's sign the top goalscorer from the fucking conference.
Or be enthusiastic about more of Lambert's dead-wood, your call.
-
I honestly presumed he was a centre-back, defender at least, when I read the news.
The only slightly positive thing I can think is that he must have something going for him if Spurs actually re-signed him a couple of years after releasing him. Injuries must have hindered him a lot. And maybe Lambert realises that if we play with a winger or two we might actually win a game.
If Lambert has had more money to spend and not done it, which apparently was the case in the summer, the axe should fall on him if we get relegated.
-
How long is he on loan for?
-
Rohan Ricketts said he's better than Gabby........
rohan ricketts has had more clubs than a blind seal.

Well obviously i've already made mine. I prefer to wait until he's kicked a ball for us before writing him off.
-
How long is he on loan for?
End of the season when he will be out of contract. So there is also the hope that he'll be wanting to play well to get a contract somewhere.
-
At least he can finish.
so can Bent , aint done us much good.
-
Looking at wiki and the wages he was getting in the MLS, it would have cost Randy more to sign me. It's unbelievable and I would have played in defence as well.
-
Anything he does here is a bonus.
He's a shot to nothing.
Even if he stinks out the place, its not like we're paying
him a kings ransom on a long contract ala Habib Beye.
-

Ta. So he's either been signed because someone thinks he can make a difference straight away, or he's auditioning for the Championship next season.
-
On the Beeb it said he has a history of injury and Tottenham released him in '09 before resigning him in 2011.
Arry has a habit of resigning his players , was it him ?
-
Don't get me wrong, I'll openly claim he's useless on here, but I'll applaud his every touch at Villa Park. I reckon Lambert will be forced to write him off as utter shite after fewer than 8 games. £10 to Acorns if I'm wrong.
There's a reason he's not even come on for Spurs as a sub in 7 years, and it's because he's shit.

even Jenas use to come on as sub doing a Stephen Hawkings impression.
-
I didn't realise he's 25. I thought he was 18 or 19. Shit.

It was pretty amusing that the club tweeted we were expecting a 'promising' player and we end up with a 25 year old. Good luck to him though.

Suffered a bad knee injury at 20. Spurs released him in '09. Dunno where he went, but obviously must've battled his way back to get re-signed by them in March '11. Been on-loan in the States pretty much since. If he can just keep the ball AWAY from our back three/four/five! Welcome aboard, you've got your work cut out

Agreed. Extremely small-time and I still don't understand what they were trying to acheive! Why hype it up when the signing was such an anti-climax? Unless they actually thought we would all just be happy we had signed someone? Whatever the reason, it shows how out of touch they have become.

The lad is a legend, well done Faulkener, what a signing. Welcome to the Villa lad, ignore all your team mates saying how shit it is in Birmingham, just go out and play, all you team mates have proved how shit they are all season so all you have to do is be slightly good and we will love you.

I work in IT and very close to online marketeers...
Online marketeers are usually just kids who show all these kpi's to management and get really excited by:
Facebook likes
Retweets
Hashtag trending etc
Because its a new industry that senior management don't fully understand there are no questions around what was tweeted...
So your right the focus is on numbers and not the reality of how it effects fans...
E.g "getting a new sensation that will rock the premier league"will be retweeted and trend much more than "opportunity to sign a squad reinforcement on the cheap"
I hate social marketing lol!

I'm with Paulie its not who he is its who he isn't, we haven't addressed our issues and I'm pretty fucked off right now

Nice tweet from Kyle Walker about him. Now there was a loan signing.
-
Can moderators start dishing out lines for people who mix up "your" and "you're"?
-
It's embarrassing to be a Villa fan these days.
Never.
-
At least it looks like he has some pace and isn't afraid to take a shot from distance. Which is something I suppose. But as Paulie said, unless he can double as a centre back, dominant midfielder or left back he isn't really what we needed.

The french reporter on radio 5 reckoned we paid well over the odds for sylla - he reckons hes not good enough for french league 1 and not worth £2 m - hardly inspiring.

People were saying that about Benteke. We can only hope that he proves them all wrong like he did
-
Obviously our main problem is at centre back.Perhaps Lambert will play Baker and Vlarr and move Clark to either defensive/attacking midfield and if Dawkins can go down the wings and belt it across for Benteke and especially Bent we might have a bit of success.
Not that Lambert will do that of course.
-
It's a pity he didn't play for New York Red Bulls. Because it would have been a Manhattan Transfer.

Best of luck Simon

They play in Newark (well, Harrison technically), so it would have been a Noo Joisey Transfer; which hasn't got the same 70s vocal ring to it.
BTW, there's a anecdote in Danny Baker's book when his housemates tell the blokes from Manhattan Transfer to keep quiet because they wanted to watch the TV

Never mind starting a game, he's never even been on the bench.

He was injured half the time. The fact they gave him contract extensions for that long suggest he has something to offer. Whether that's good enough for this level we'll soon see.

Agreed. Maybe it depends on where you live, but I'm just about the only Villa fan I know up here, and the 'banter' is mostly between mocking and pity these days. At least half my friends are Rangers fans, so I've got plenty of ammo to fire back.
-
I got to see Dawkins score a scorcher against The Seattle Sounders last September while visiting rellies in Seattle.
The lad is useful fast with good footwork and has an eye for good passes. Sounders fans will be glad to see the back of him.
As to whether he will survive the pace and much tighter marking of the Premiership we are about to find out. The MLS defenders are good but a lot looser and less aggressive than the Premiership. Although the MLS does have its share of cloggers.
Dawkins at 25 years old has a lot to prove to himself. Many wouldn't have come back from the series of injuries that he sustained but he worked hard and was able to spend two good seasons in San Jose. He will be popular with the fans because he signs autographs and has a smiling personality. The fans of the San Jose Earthquakes are going to miss Dawkins. There is no doubt that the Earthquakes will attempt to re-sign him in June. (Paul Faulkner take note if he shows promise - sort it out)
If he is able to play the football that I saw him produce in the MLS then we may very well have a player here.
For an article and video of his wondergoal follow this http://tinyurl.com/bpvp483
Apologies if this has appeared elsewhere.
-
Perhaps one of the reasons he didnt get many games at Spurs might be down to Lennon, Bale, Van der Vaart etc
He's a Rumsfeld for me
An unknown unknown that might well become a wellknown.........
in a few years playing alongside our other unknown unknown .......with a lorra lorra luck?
Welcome ....show us what you've got...we know what the rest have and it aint a lot

So? Just because we have a buffoon as an owner and we are most likely going down without a fight it doesn't make me embarrassed to be a Villa fan.
If anything it makes me want to front up to anyone who tries to take the piss and ask them if they would pretend not to support their team if they were in the same situation.
Be angry, be sad, but for fuck's sake don't be embarrassed to support Aston Villa.
-
He seems similar to Gabby from the videos I have seen. Hopefully he won't go missing as often.
-
Looks very good from his highlights.
Let's hope he comes in flying. Could give us a creative spark.

He should do ok in training with our defenders

There is no way on God's earth that Faulkner will have insisted on us being allowed to buy him if he is any good. I wish him well. I wish all young sportsmen and sportswomen well as they try to carve a career in the mad house of professional sport but mark my words if he is any good they will have him back before you can say Kyle Naughton.

This all day. I'm angry and a bit disillusioned at our current predicament. I am embarrassed about some of our performances and results recently. But I will never, ever be embarrassed to support Aston Villa.
As Dave says, if anything it engenders a siege mentality in my mind. It makes me even more staunchly proud to wear my colours (if that's at all possible), and makes me think "go on, do your worst"!

Saw a girl in her sizeXXXL Acorns shirt walking round the Marina Rubicon Market yesterday....she wasn't embarrassed to be seen as a Villa fan...credit to her she makes some on here look wimps
-
It was pretty amusing that the club tweeted we were expecting a 'promising' player and we end up with a 25 year old. Good luck to him though.
The club tweets are an embarrassment.
The teaser about a signing was cringeworthy.
Everything about the club is cringeworthy. It's embarrassing to be a Villa fan these days.
Ain't that the truth.
You can leave me out of that fucking club.
disappointed and angry with a lot of how this season has unfolded. Embarrassed or not proud, never.

I doubt that I will feel at all embarrassed to be at Villa Park on Sunday.

I've been contemplating copying the approach of some New York Jets fans from a few years ago

They sound a bit upset that they've lost him.
Hopefully a good sign of what to expect - maybe a leader?
-
Interesting article from a spurs perspective

Interesting article that.
-
Interesting article that.
Indeed. I know he wasn't the signing we all craved but it seems such a low risk option but potentially has huge benefits if it come off.
-
Dawkins was considered a useless signing by Danny Mills on Fighting Talk today. That alone is a reason to want him to succeed
-
He looked OK to me, best of luck Simon
-
Better wide option than Bowery.
-
Must admit I liked what I saw from his little cameo.
-
He looked comfortable on the ball which was pleasing, hard to really assess him after such a short time on the pitch though.
-
Looked ok, plus he could be the cheating, diving bastard we've been lacking since Young left.
A crucial dodgy penalty against Reading or QPR would go some way to making up for the Southampton travesty.
-
Yes i was impressed with him today, maybe could have released his passes slightly quicker as benteke and bent had just strayed offside when he finally passed but he looked something different and i am looking forward to seeing more from him - well done simon!
-
a few nice touches to say the least, looks really comfortable on the ball, I'm just not that sure we'll be seeing loads of him between now and the end of the season.
-
Impressed me today, apart from his dive.
-
Why do people think it was a dive? Reid clearly tripped him with his arse.
-
He looked a tidy player to me, WTF he was doing with the dive I dont know, dont agree with that. How the feck Bowery gets chosen ahead of him is a bit strange.
-
He done fuk all to say if he's any good or not but he's still a better option than Bowery
-
I thought it was a Pen from the North stand and thought the only reason it wasn't given was he had knocked the ball too far forward.
-
Thought he looked decent today. Good awareness, a bit of pace. He's not played at this level before and didn't look lost. It would be nice to have found a player to offer us some natural width. Fingers crossed.
-

Bowery was played to protect the right and provide some help at corners / freekicks. He did not pass the ball to put a West Ham player through on goal, totally lose a man or stupidly get himself sent off. He also did not take on 20 people, assist or score. He had an OK game.
When Bent came on, Lambert brought on Dawkins as a winger and put Charles over to the right so we have the crosses coming in.
-
Seemed energetic but lacked technique of two feet like most players and bit weak in tackle. Showed good touches and went forward with ball aswell as passing fairly simply but accurately. Failed to shoot and did some ridiculous jump in air and fall when in area for 3-0 also same with holding in corner on 89 mins. Would have liked him from start shows attacking intent.
-
Pop down to Sutton Town guys.
I promise you will see better footballers than this clown.
$50k a year?
Makes an injured Richard Dunne look good value.

Did he run over your dog or something?
Why is it so many Villa fans are just champing at the bit to write off new players? Maybe he is going to be shit, but you can't really judge him off his first 30 minutes.
-
Which weren't too bad at all either.
-
I liked what i saw of him. He looked comfortable on the ball and had a bit of pace about him.
-
I don't want to see any more dives like the one yesterday, but other than that a decent enough cameo on his debut.
-

Not sure it was a dive , his trailing leg just caught him and he lost balance - not a penalty or a dive in my view.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't a dive either and probably would have been a second penalty had the ball not run away from him after too heavy a touch. I thought he looked lively once he had settled into the game.
-
I think it was an 'exaggerated fall'. Still not great, but he felt he was clipped (still not a penalty).
-
I must of watched a totally different game. I thought he looked petrified and out of his depth. I sincerely hope I'm wrong. He's 25 remember making his PL debut. Rooney made his at 16. As I said I hope I'm wrong.

Wow, are you saying he won't be as good as Wayne Rooney? Dayum.

It was still his Premier League debut, in front of a nervous crowd in a relegation must win game. I thought he did okay.
-
Looked alright to me , we looked a better team with him and Bent coming in as Weimann was having a mare and Bowery just filled in .
But I thought Holman and KEA looked great early on .
-
I thought he did ok. Showed some nice touches and provided a useful bit of balance and much needed width on the left.
Would like to see him start against QPR or Citeh.
-
QPR. We beat them and they are down .
-
QPR. We beat them and they are down .
Mathematically or just a statement mate?
-
Way, way, way too early to judge him.
Let's see how he does playing from the off.
-

I was at the game and saw it the same as you. Both Bowery (I accept that he was out of position) and Dawkins don't look anywhere near as good as Carruthers did when he featured last season, and I would go as far as saying that they didn't even look as good as Delfouneso.
-
I thought it was a Pen from the North stand and thought the only reason it wasn't given was he had knocked the ball too far forward.
I sit in the upper Holte and thought it was a penalty.
-

What are you basing your opinion on?
What is it that you have seen that gives you such a conclusive opinion?
-
I thought he looked alright. Didn't like the 'tumble' either, whether he was caught or tried to make something out of nothing, I just thought he should have been able to stay on his feet and been more decisive, got a shot away earlier.
But overall... moved the ball around okay, decent touch - and when he came on we actually looked very fluid across the front four. Movement was good, Benteke came into the game more, the switch allowed CNZ to move to the right, from where he nearly scored; won a penalty; played the ball in to the win the free-kick; scored the free kick.
I don't have massive expectations of a lad we've loaned for six months but I don't see any reason why he can't make a contribution from the bench, at least. The type of player who can come on and stretch defences in the last 25-30 mins.
-

He get a pass to do what he likes against Southampton.
-
I think hes a free agent in the summer so a real chance to earn himself a contract here if he does well.
-
QPR. We beat them and they are down .
Mathematically or just a statement mate?
statement ;) I just think with us being probably 10 points in front of them and maybe around 10 games to go , they won have to win 4 more games than Villa in the ten games left.
-
Way, way, way too early to judge him.
Let's see how he does playing from the off.
Agreed but he did look promising.

He looked pretty quick and seemed to move the ball along quite nicely.
I would like to see how is in beating a man and putting some crosses in.

I sit in L2 in the lower Holte and he had lost control of the ball before the contact was made, although from where the ref was positoned it would have been difficult to have seen this and judge that contact was made. Seen them given before!

What was the actual point of this signing? We're paying Spurs and he's not even making the bench. Why do the Villa feel they have a duty to take on Spurs rejects( Walker aside) Annoying

I thought he was on the bench yesterday, but could be wrong.
I guess he was signed to cover an option Lambert thought we needed. It's not exactly costing us much so I see no dramas.

He's clearly not Premier League material so why waste what little cash we have on him.
-
I can't imagine we're paying Spurs much at all.
I've more concern with Ireland. He needs to be shipped out.
-

But we're paying Dawkins a salary. That's cash that could have gone on a centreback.
Some bizarre decisions at Villa this season.

I would imagine Dawkins is on a very low salary. I dread to think what Centre Back we could have got for that.

Ada little bit more and perhaps we could have got a decent one.
We must be seriously skint.
-
He was probably a relatively cheap gamble/cover, wasn't he on £32k a year in the US so being the premier league he's probably increased that a fair bit but its going to be relatively small wages.
Dawkins himself has probably taken more of a gamble, an offer of a better deal in US and now looks like he won't make an impression here so could well be left without a club soon (no idea how long his spurs contract is?)

Well, he was on the bench yesterday.
I have much more concern about having to pay that little scrote Ireland his £60k a week or whatever he's on.

Lerner shouldn't have signed him then
-
He looked o.k to me against West ham but lost against Arsenal and City.
-

If that's the case he'll be on peanuts by premier league standards so this is a non-issue.

MON started the deal, Lerner finished it off. At the time it looked like a sound bit of business. Unfortunately no one could have predicted what 4 different managers (including the Newcastle loan) have since discovered, that he is a little scrote.
-
Most people on here probably earned more than the $50,000 Dawkins picked up last season. I wouldn't worry about his wages.
-
If PL rates him I have no problem with him.
PL rules.

I too thought we might see a bit more of Carruthers this season.
