That would be a decent bench if the first team was a bit better.

Ugh how did Delph keep his place? Otherwise, Stevens deserves a chance (Bennett was indeed horrible), good to see Vlaar on the bench and Westwood back is very welcome.

Great, Delph starts, despite the absence of any evidence that he's actually a footballer at all.

Doubt it as we are at home, I think I heard absolute radio have it live on national radio though today .

Hmm, Vlaar on bench. Probably just easing his way back to full fitness rather than rushing. Hopefully we don't need him today but I'd be more confident if he was playing.

One thing we can rely on with Delph is that he will no doubt pick up a yellow card

Delph probably doesn't deserve to start based on current form, but I think he actually has the potential to become a decent Premier League footballer. That view is mostly based on performances in the tail end of the 2010/11 season, mind.

If we need him it will probably be because we're losing, but it might be too late as we' ll have to score

I'm very nervous for Villa today. Our confidence took a big hit over the Christmas fixtures, maybe even more deflated after Tuesday. Can't say im looking forward to today's game.

Clark and baker look dodgy formwise, vlaar must  have been  struggling or I think if at all possible lambert would have started him.

At least Bennett is sick. Shame he hasn't spent the last few days sneezing all over Delph, mind. If Lambert keeps giving him a starting place I'm going to need to enquire about the cost of taking out a hit on him.

I know what you mean, I find him a really tidy player. He needs to work on his tackling though. There's definitely are good player in there, he just needs confidence. Some of the goals he scored for dirty Leeds were amazing, regardless of their division.

We need to start on the front foot and take our chances. If we start as we did against Wigan the result could very well be the same. Like everyone feels, Delph is a liability but the idea is that he will provide some protection to the back four and allow Westwood to push forward. And like everyone, I'm not sure what Villa we'll see and I'm bricking it...just a little

Sunderland 1-0 up.Sigh

What they have is players that are established at this level. When they were in trouble they could draw on that experience to get themselves free of it. Now he's also paying them a king's ransom and so as we are the club is screwed down the road off course. Seb Larsson got the goal and it was a belter. One thing they have is the ability to score from long range out of midfield.

It's a bit pedestrian, this, isn't it?

Watching the Norwich - Newcastle and it's not pedestrian at all. Norwich are quick and pass nicely. A team built by Lambert in the main. I know time is as rare as Randy's money these days, but it does make you wonder if he did get two years getting in the players he wants how we'd look. I believe he's as much fighting the players that he's lumbered with from the previous three manager's as much as the general malaise over the club. It will take more than 7 months to rid that.

Don't get me wrong, I think he should get the time, but he's going to need money, and really quickly, too.

I'm convinced that it began with McLeish where he almost sent the team out not to lose. We just sat deeper and deeper and now it has become a confidence thing. That as soon as the opposition try and step it up we don't have the ability like say Man U do and hit them on the counter as a warning never to do it again. When we now drop deeper there is no real counter to speak of so the opposition gets more and more confident and us the opposite,

Do we actually do any defensive training during the week? Because that looked comedically bad, yet again.

It was a poor decision, but we're fucking rubbish and keep losing games. That's what will relegate us. Other than the first 15 minutes, we have looked utterly disjointed, keep giving them the ball, and are being made to look totally second best on our own patch by fellow relegation strugglers.

Wonder if Halsey had a big shit-eating grin on his face as usual when he blew for the penalty?

He did. You all know my view, but we will not win a game with Halsey as the ref. 15 years he has been fucking Villa up the arse, he ain't going to stop now the c***. Sorry, the man gives us fuck all. It was about a foot clean air between the dive and Stevens leg.
Agree you just know if he is the ref he will do what he has just done.

What worries me is the near total lack of fight. A bit of fire and passion isn't ever going to replace quality, but it should be a minimum.

That was fifteen decent minutes followed by thirty minutes of utter crud. Southampton look totally comfortable.

Not only do we need reinforcements this month, we need quite a lot of them, and they need to be fucking good, because this just looks like a whole side of teenagers way, way out of their depth.

I can't believe anyone - even our fucking clueless absentee owner and the blond boy wonder - thinks there is enough quality in this squad to avoid the drop.

It reminds me of 86-7, match after match of just looking second best, and uninterested, too.

Poor half , being outplayed by a poor team , sloppy defending led to the penalty which obviously wasnt a pen , but we created the problem.

Not an effort on target , dismal dire stuff indeed.
Lowton looking really poor again today , little to be positive about except that its only 0-1.

We'd have 5 corners. Not a single one has been met by a Villa player. In fact, half of our throw ins have gone to the other team.

For people saying to forget the penalty, they hadn't created a chance until that, I'd guarantee it'd still be 0-0 if he hadn't given that.  Yes we've not played great but neither have they and we'd done enough to deserve to be level for me.

Shocking referee, always gives shit against us and has done it at a critical point yet again.

What's happened since the goal is what we'd expect from a team with no confidence, yet again midfield are too deep so we have, effectively, 6-0-4, means we can't keep the ball and end up punting it up to Benteke and asking him to control the game for us.  Someone needs to drag Delph and Westwood 10 yards further forward andd nzogbia and Holman 5-10 yards back, we'd be much better for it.

It just seems so utterly relentless.

Week after week after week of horrendous performances and results, it honestly looks like it is never going to stop, and all the while, what brittle confidence is left in the better younger players is getting utterly destroyed.

It's so depressing. I haven't watched any televised football or football discussion programs on telly for about two months now, because it is all so disgracefully embarassing.

If we're not going to get bodies in, then sorry, but he's going to have to go cap in hand to Warnock and get him in, because right now, that defence looks like it desperately needs someone with a scintilla of an idea how to organise things, because there are absolutely no hints that it is getting better.

No shots and 42% possession is horrible. Glad I missed the first half. We need a win.

Defence aside this isn't a bad team, it's shocking how little we create and threaten.

Stevens and Bennett aren't good enough. Need Warnock back.

I think he will walk tonight.

I don't think he should go, but, looking at recent results, and the fact there has not been a single sign of things getting better for weeks now, it is really hard to argue that he should not at least offer his resignation.

Why shouldn't he go? If this season had been under TSM he'd be absolutely vilifed by now. I'm sorry but this is appalling from top to bottom.
Who would be a viable replacement / caretaker? That's the killer question.

Our team is a busted flush. Pretty much all of them need to be taken out of the firing line but most of the replacements are every bit as bad without any prospect of improvement. When will the Fabian Delph experiment end? He wouldn't be a starter at a championship club and has done nothing to provide any doubt around that assertion. It's just relentless misery supporting us now. Some of these players will go on to do well, unless as is looking likely playing for this rabble mentally destroys them.

Agree completely, but I expect certain things from certain players. A player like N'Zo (who we've seen what he can do at previous clubs) should have done so much more since he joined us. Especially now when we're struggling, we need players like him to step up.

And that was a fucking foul on Weimann.

As much as he doesn't appear to know how to arrest this sharp decline, I can't help but feel sympathy for him.  He's basically being asked to keep an U21 side in the Premier League.
With respect,he bought a lot of the under 21 players

Lambert's Pussies

Lambert's Lions are Lambs.

I still think Lambert's Lemmings (c) KevinGage is the best description of our team.

If there was someone we could bring in as a red adair to keep us up and leave at the end of the season I'd sack Lambert. But none of the obvious candidates are available.

I am beginning to get resigned to the fact that we are going down.  Unless we get some decent players back from injury and buy some decent players we are fucked.

I feel the same. With all the positivity and best will in the world, the team is just lacking in every single department and those that run the club seem unwilling to try and amend this.
All the positivity has been drained out of me.  Can't even be arsed to WIBB.....

At this point we don't need a messiah with a master plan. We need a motivator who will get them disciplined and fighting. And bring in some older players to help the kids.

He signed young kids though Hilts and has ostracised some senior players.  I don't think there is a single valid argument for keeping Lambert if we lose this one.  As for the "who else" one, anybody would struggle to be as bad as the last month or so.

I'm struggling to find any rays of hope in what I'm seeing right now. How in the hell did we win at Liverpool and at Norwich, let alone Man City to have somehow become this? We need a minimum of 2 goals against Bradford. I can't see us doing that either.

The defence is clearly shit, but it's the midfield that's quite shockingly poor. We have no attacking mids, and no defensive mids. So they all end up doing neither, with zero movement and zero impact.

Watching this, it is on the whole, pretty pathetic again.

The mad thing is, though, that although this side is fucking awful, it wouldn't really require huge investment to improve the side considerably.

Centre back, left back, midfielder - they don't need to cost 10m each, in fact, you could probably get all three for a total of 10m, but they absolutely must be experienced heads, more kids is going to achieve nothing.

If Lerner can't sanction that kind of expenditure or strain on the wage bill, then he doesn't deserve to own a top flight club, frankly, and pretty soon, he won't.

I did trust in Lambo. He was my first choice - but it hasn't worked. Whether it's all his fault or not, the club's short term future of staying up is the main priority. If he can't do it, find someone that will.

Any suggestions?

Can't think of many who would do a worse job..

I am asking for someone who will do a better job.
Alan Curbishley

That was who I was going to say. Even Curbs would get us playing better than this.

Is it 1999?
I wish it was

I know for most manager's it's a job but Lambert is lifeless and it transfers to the team. The is no energy at all in the side. None. No player has it, the manager doesn't have it, the board doesn't have any and it ends up that the life is sucked out of the fans too. I used to get really upset about this, but honestly I can't be arsed. And I really, really hate myself for it.

I'm starting to think it's our attack that is the problem.

It's the whole team in front of Guzan.

In turns out a decent result against Liverpool didn't transform Beneteke from a big useless turd in to the new Drogba.

Just found this post August 2010.

Think it was the last time I was happy after watching us :

Now that, THAT, was how to play football.
No plodders, no-one out of position, everyone motivated, everyone confident, everyone very very happy.

Thank you, Albrighton.
Thank you, Ashley.
Thank you, Milner.
And a BIG Thank You, Kevin Mac!
