Decent side, I'd have gone for bent ahead of gabby but we should have too much for the bantams either way .

Attacking side.  I'm predicting a new torn one for them.

4-4-2 with Gabby wide? or a 4-3-3 with a very soft centre?

Gabby, CNZ, Weimann and Benteke all in.

Where's Bent?

bench I imagine. I think it was to be expected that he'd be on the bench with Benteke coming back in. Gabby will likely play wide left with N'Zogbia either right or slipping into the hole behind the two front men. Very attacking.

Bent not even on the bench replaced by new signing Bant.

4231 surely? Nzogbia in the hole. That's why bent isn't playing presumably. If it was 442 I imagine bent would've started

Gabby has done nothing this season to get in the side.

even if he doesn't score he'll ensure that Bradford can't push up too far. One ball over the top and he'll skin them. I know Gabby isn't what he once was, but he still keeps defences honest and he does work his bollocks off.

Agree with this. I like the look of the side, we really are blessed with strikers, a fair bit less so with midfield/defence

Looks like a gung-ho 4-2-3-1. I like it.

Edit: Hawkeye, disagree, I think it'll be a central partnership of Weimann and Benteke, with Gabby left and Zog right.

I didnt say Gung Ho but it feels a little like it, the key will be Nzog putting a shift in, where ever he plays.
I still think its 4-2-3-1 but hey it could be 3- 5 -2

As I've mentioned a few times, Lambert only knows gung-ho. The word 'caution' doesn't exist in his vocabulary.
I just hope our little 'uns in central midfield don't get bullied. They'd not be exactly top of list of players to protect our dodgy defence.

Not suprised Bent left out, after 2 months on the sidelines and a match at the weekend, I'm sure he will appear in the 2nd half, we have to save some powder for the weekend.  Come on boys let's have an easy night for once, my nerves are shredded already.

Slight miscommunication there, I agree about the formation but disagree about Zog's position, though I do agree about the putting the shift in bit. And I think the team's pretty gung-ho!

Very positive selection from Lambert.

I thought it'd be tough, but now the games here I'm very confident.

Tough start and our defence to cave in, but us to win comfortably in the end. 4-2 Villa. Benteke hattrick.

Not a bad game so far. Just very frail at the back and too many long diagonal balls. We've got better players than that. We should be able to out play them rather than relying on an all to often over hit long ball

There's something quite mesmerising about our 'defending'. It's like watching a lava lamp. A shit one, mind.

Coincidentally I have one eye on a new lava lamp bought for my missus today.  It isn't doing much and appears to be a shit lava lamp.  It is still better than watching Villa.

Everyone calm down.

We are not playing badly, we're being patient and not panicking.

Be fucking positive.

Defensively we are playing badly. Very fucking badly.

Disagree.

It's not perfect but it's a cup game and both teams are desperate to win.

I'm enjoying myself.

You believe we are defending well?

I agree its an enjoyably paced cup tie, but our back four are abysmal at best.

No I disagree that our defence has been 'very fucking bad'. Just a bit of an exaggeration.

They're at home and they've sprung out the traps, hopefully they'll tire and get more nervous.

That was on 18 minutes, and we've been woeful for the 25 minutes since then. That's not good enough, especially considering the level of the opposition.

The frustrating thing is that we started well and created loads of chances. But we're really starting to fall to pieces defensively. Bennett has been horrific. Bannan pretty ropey. Nzogbia the main threat. Benteke has been poor I think. I wonder if bent might come on?
We've hit too many long balls to Benteke too.

But it still is 1-0 and my main concern is that we concede one or two more. Clark is being continuously beaten in the air and we look poor at set pieces.

Yes, the calmer ones on here are right, we probably will come good, but bloody hell we have not been very good have we.
But, I said in the pre match thread that we should expect them to throw the kitchen sink at us.
What we don't want is to concede another, because if we have to attack a 2 goal deficit, and they park the bus at Villa Park, ten we could be in deep shit.

We REALLY need to score the next goal.

Not the best 45 minutes but considering how awful we were around Christmas not the worst either.  Even if - and it's still a big if - they win the first leg I'd still back us to turn it around at Villa Park.

A longer-term concern is that state of our midfield and defence.  Such a lack of quality might not count against you when playing someone from League 2 but in the Premier League it's a big worry.

Played well up until their goal but we should have scored at least 2 by then. Charlie having a good game but Bennett, Bannan and Delph not so. Think we will score but can see them getting another as well.
Title: Re: Bradford City v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: paul_e on January 08, 2013, 08:38:39 PM
Bennett has had a nightmare.

Bannan and Delph are far too deep when we have the ball, so there's a massive gap between them and the front 4, forcing us to hit it long.

We need to stop hitting the deep crosses towards Benteke, it's lazy and 1 of the most common types of attack in the lower leagues so they will be well used to it.

Charlie has almost played really well, just needs to look up more, same problem ever since he joined, does the hard part and then gets trapped in a hole by trying to do too much.

Have to say Clark is looking very vulnerable. he should swap men with Baker, the bloke hes marking is too good in the air for him.

Have every confidence we will score, not so confident that we won't give one away, apart from Baker the defence look poor.

Gabby is having a bit of a shocker as well, every time it comes to him, he either gives it away, gives a free kick away, and does nothing

It's not exactly the worst we've played all season, but we've looked the better team for about 15 minutes against a team 3 leagues below us. I don't think it's overreacting to suggest that's unacceptable.

It's also pretty typical of this side, as soon as they concede a goal. They've got all the confidence of a victim of domestic violence.

Someone on for Bannan also, who has been his usual all fart and no poo self

You would like him to ........ 'poo'?

Well him farting is getting us nowhere.

Sir, I am in your debt.

I'd say Bannan off, but who would come on to replace him?

Guzan would do better
To be perfectly frank, we are a quarter of the way through the transfer window, this could have quite easily been dealt with by now

We're being so exposed down the left I think it might be worth switching to 442 with someone to offer Bennett more protection. Bannan could play there with Ireland in the middle. Bennett must have at least two new arseholes

The spine is so fragile though, if you stick 2 quality players, 1 centre half and 1 defensive mid into that team and they would be way calmer than they are. No leader without Vlaar. Need 2-3 signings quickly.

Some overreactions here, I think.

We've hardly mentally gone, we've created lots of chances, and we've 45 minutes left, still.

Yes, the midfield is highly questionable, but they barely bothered our goal other than the goal, which was a good finish but a very lucky bounce as it pinged around.

I agree Bennett is having a bit of a nightmare, and the midfield are very lightweight, but FFS, you'd think we'd been under the cosh or something.

That's the problem, we create chances and don't take them. Bring Bent on, can't be worse than we have been so far.

We have not exactly shown the difference in class tell have we?

No we havent, but it frequently goes like that, doesn't it. Ask Arsenal. This is cup football.

We keep the ball, pass it around, and chances come. If we keep doing that, we'll get more chances, and we'll take at least one of them. As soon as that happens, Bradford's heads will drop.

Clark being beaten in the air from crosses from right as Baker not there as he is being dragged out from centre to bale Bennett out!!!!

When the goal went in i thought no worries but within 5 minutes the performance had deteriated so much. Delph knocking everything backwards/ sideways, in general passes going astray.......Had my moan we'll probably go out and get 4, but somehow i doubt it!!! .

I agree with most of what you say there but the bit in bold is overstating it.  They've been very creative and caused a great deal of panic for us at the back.  Some of their balls into the box have been excellent.

Get him off, put Bent up front and Wiemann wide.

I'm disappointed with Bennett TBH. I thought he had turned the corner and had been quite impressive since the Spurs game. But he is getting mullered by Hines thus far. I think Stevens probably less of a liability TBH.

We are missing Westwood in midfield tonight.  N'Zogbia has had his moments, but is not doing enough in the attacking midfield role and Bennett is looking a liability.

Lerner has to take some blame for this season, but not tonight.

These players should be ashamed of themselves. Call themselves PL players, take Premier League wages, and are losing convincingly to a team 3 leagues lower. They're useless, spineless wankers.

It's only half-time etc. and so on.

However Bradford have no need to come at us in a fortnight, so we're going to struggle to break them down. Christ, what am I writing?! Pretty embarassing stuff tonight, but surely, surely we'll be up for Southampton. I only wonder what they do all day as our defence couldn't hold onto a leaky pritt stick at the moment.

It's called passion/anger/love/hate delete as appropriate they all apply to how I feel about Villa these days.
The stark reality is that was a disgrace.
I've seen us lose at Bury and Torquay in the third division, and at Southend in the First Round of the FA Cup and I'm as angry as then.
I'm sorry for my comment, of course I will never stop loving the Villa, but tonight they don't deserve any praise

That's the problem - We SHOULDN'T EVEN BE CONTENT WITH A DRAW AGAINST A DIVISION 4 SIDE!!!

What the fuck has this club become! Kids not good enough. Manager not good enough. Owner not good enough!

League cup final is gone - We may score a goal or two at VP but there is no way we will keep a clean sheet with that shower!

We have become a laughing stock. Unless Lerner pulls some serious cash out of his pocket this month, and Lambert stops spending the 90 minutes tickling his balls in the back of the dugout, there is no way we are going to survive in the Prem, let alone claw back this tie!
