Looking down at my Aston Villa keychain I had unsurprisingly received for Christmas, I noticed something that I never thought I would. I actually really like the current badge. Tell me I'd be thinking this four years ago and I would have scoffed in your face, but it's really grown on me. It has an aura of class about it, and gives the impression of a 'big club'. I can even get over the fact that they 'de-clawed' the rampant lion, and even the lack of claret on it, mostly through the inclusion of the star to signify our European Cup win.

I really liked it's predecessor, mind, and I'm not sure why. I'd imagine it's because it's the badge I grew up with, but I do like the fact it looks like the lions about to beat the shit out of you.

What are your favourite old badges of ours?
-
I'm a bit unsure about the choice of font for 'Prepared' on the new one, though.
-
I've liked the latest badge since the outset. I like is simplicity.
The only downside to me is the star. As great an achievement as it was we are more than a club that has the biggest European prize under it's belt. We embody more than that.

So what else would you have included? Maybe loads of little stars for the FA Cup and League Cup wins? Something more?
-
It's definitely a grower.
-
What have started here. This will make page 300.
-
I like them all to be honest, from the circle one to the last one to the new one
-
Still a very weak design in my eyes. The star is in the wrong place, the fonts are a mish mash, there's not enough contrast, especially when the badge is being used on video screens and the lion has stupid looking paws...
-
Always be the old circular badge for me, not keen on the current one with the Lion chucking a Kung-Fu star.
-
My fav!

I always think the Lion looks more like a dragon in that one Paull!

I would have included nothing and left it as it is minus the star.
The star has no historical significance to our club. If and when we play in the Champions League as it is now, we can adopt one outside the current badge just as other winners currently do.
-
The old circular one is still the best.
-
The badly designed mess that is the latest badge perfectly encapsulates Lerner's running of the club.

Wow didn't even make it off page 1.....

There's my plan for some light hearted discussion away from the current issues gone out the window!
-
It has all the hallmarks of being designed by a rank amateur - or if not that, then maybe a committee.
I'm quite sure there are some on H&V who could have produced something much better, but then again, I like the '57 cup winning badge - echos of the old Trinity mosaic. Proper shield shape as well and we don't need our name/initials on it either. We are Aston Villa, nobody needs it to be spelled out.
-
I hate the new badge, sorry. It is very poor design work.
It is weak with the yellow on light blue. The Lion is cartoon like and should have separation as on the stripy thing, and claws..... The shield is too narrow. The faux twenties letraset "prepared" font is pathetic. And - we are ASTON VILLA not AVFC.
I preferred the old , old, old, old (if you include Docherty's early seventies lion) badge last used in the sixties. But the round badge was fine and famous and we should have stayed with that.
Just my tuppence worth.
-
E I Adio - snap! Same thoughts, same time.
-
i like the kingswinford lions club badge!
-
It's really not my cup of tea, but i'm loathe to say too much against it in case i'm accused of some sort of Guy Fawkes plot to blow up Villa Park.
-
Didn't RL have a big input into this though? Not a dig, just an observation, that a businessman doesn't always make a great designer.
I'm also surprised that there were no checks in it, which is a Lernerism.
-

You were clearly deluded 8)

Not sure, but I know from the early days that they held great store by what people on the internet thought.

As always :(

Anyway... Back to badges: It's the old round one for me! I don't mind the shape of the present one, but there's altogether too much blue. I expect it's so that it stands out against the claret shirt body, but it looks wrong, in isolation.
Also, it's just occurred to me that the position of the star makes it look a bit like a cat playing with a Christmas tree decoration.

I can vouch for that. Bastard cats.
-

Yes. Great minds.
I'm okay with the round badge as well, but why do we need to change the badge at all? It seems to me that the design gets worse every time it's changed, although it's hard to imagine how it could get any worse next time.

Agreed. If Lerner ever does sell up, the badge should be the first thing to be changed. Looks like YTS designed it.
-
The old round one was easily the best. Wasn't a big fan of the old stripey shield one. The stripey Muller kit had a plastic embossed badge of that on it rather than a proper embroidered one, which probably made it our tackiest, most cheaply produced kit ever. Which is a shame as the team that wore it was fantastic.
-
The embroidered blue lion rampant with the letters AV underneath from about 1971ish. Was excellent. The lion looked well hard.
-
Can somebody add a poll?
-
I grew up with the stripy shield badge so that one is the one I identify with the most, although I agree that the circle badge is by far the best. For a club with as much tradition as we do, we change our badge remarkably often. I've watched Villa since 98 and I've seen us have three different badges.
I've got used to the current one, but when I sit and stare at it I'm reminded of how crap it is. I like that it has FC on it, it's just a shame they left our name off. Also, the shade of blue is wrong, which is why the sleeves on this year's kit is wrong, as they tried to match it up. It's just far too simple, plain and generally uninspiring.
As I remember it the club did a survey when redesigning it, seeing what the fans wanting in terms of shape, lettering etc. They mashed all the results together and this is what we were left with. Urgh.

You're not a proper fan unless you're angry all the time.
-
I think the old circular badge of the early 80's is by far the best that we ever had. It was classy. As far as the current is concerned, it has a little grown on me but it remains poor especially because it doesn't harmonize well with the shade of claret of the shirt, imo.

And the gold lion on sky blue background just doesn't look good.
-
I like it, I got it tattooed on my arm
My you I have the round badge with Champions of Europe written underneath tattooed on my chest!
Am I just sad?

Or hate Lerner it should seem.
-
I'm used to the new crest now but really did not like it when it was first unveiled. I preferred Risso's alternative.
-
Still don't like it.
Yellow on pale blue just doesn't stand out, the lion needs some claws and above all....it doesn't have 'ASTON VILLA' on it.
-
Can somebody add a poll?
Suggest the options and I'll happily oblige.
-
Don't like the latest badge - that expanse of light blue with the yellow lion on it is just garish. And didn't really like the stripey one either - too fussy.

Like others have mentioned, my favourite is the late 70's/early 80's circular one, the one mentioned by TLP is a really close second as it was on the very first Villa kit I got as a 5 year-old! It's minimalist and very classy. That's why I was very partial to some of the mock-ups that Marshall did when we were speculating on what the new Macron kit designs would be like:
http://www.heroesandvillains.info/forumv3/index.php?topic=46317.msg1989389#msg1989389 (http://www.heroesandvillains.info/forumv3/index.php?topic=46317.msg1989389#msg1989389)
Both the mocked-up home and away shirts in the above link, (especially the badges), are absolute class.
-
This Villa badge is the worst in our history, the lion is neutered, the fonts are clumsy, the colours abysmal, the star weak, the badge shape too simple, the concept poor, never liked it from day one and still don't today.
It looks like it's been designed by a kid with Paint on a Computer, competition winner circa 1985.
A grower it certainly ain't.
Our 'classic' shield from the 1950s is the best Villa badge, with rampant lion and scroll 'prepared', any new revised badge should have been based on this.
Just my opinion as a designer.
Everything about Villa is shit at the moment, including this. :-[

Spot on.

The 57 FA Cup shirt badge is class, the round one reminds me of our finest moment, sadly, not to be repeated for some time, the stripey badge is my favorite one and the new one lays way back in last place, still not a bad badge but just doesn't scream ASTON VILLA to me. I have one 57 shirt, one 80's round badge shirt, three stripey badge shirts and three with the new badge on. It confuses the fuck out of the West Ham retards who are the main lot in my local, and that is a bit of fun.
Just a question, Have Manure, Arsenvengeral, Manshitty or the Russian mafia ever changed their badges ? Cannot say that i have noticed. Dont pay that much attention to other badges to be honest, it is a giveaway wen they have Scholes,Henry, Tevez or Fat Frank on the back of their shirts. Just a question, anybody got the knowledge ? And has any team changed their badge as many times as we have ?

I still have my 50's/60's enamel lapel badge with the lion rampant and the motto prepared underneath. My old man bought it for me from one of the blokes that used to have a home-made board full of them, (and other clubs) stationed around the ground, remember them older posters?. A bit like H&V sellers today. :D I wouldn't part with it for anything.

As bad as the new one is, what the fuck were they thinking with this? It doesn't even look like a lion. It has a three-pronged dildo for a head.

We like to fuck all the arseholes in one go, thats why :o
-
The new badge is a complete mish-mash of a design. Bland, no element sitting well with the others. Design by committee.
And 'prepared' is a re-cut typeface called 'Chelsea studio'. No professional designer or creative director with a love of Aston Villa (of which I'm one) would let that happen.
Chelsea Studio (http://www.urbanfonts.com/fonts/Chelsea_Studio.htm)

The old round badge hands down for me. I had a little enamelled one that I pinned to my jacket until I found you could get little solid gold ones. Love to know what happened to my gold badge!!!!
-
I like it, I got it tattooed on my arm
Didn't Lerner get it tattooed on his ankle?
-
Don't really like the new badge. I don't like the way the lion prances on it and I don't like the shape of the crest. I also don't like the way the star is inside rather then on top. Previous one was much better.

Not an expert, and without checking, but I remember when Chelsea just had CFC in scroll letters on their shirts before they changed to the roundel. Also Man U had a completely different badge on their '57 cup final shirts, but I've no idea when they changed.
-
Arsenal have changed several badges and even they are getting worse since when they left the plain white cannon that had in the 70's.
-
The crest preference will be often based on emotional attachment according to our age I guess. But the new one is simply a very, very poor piece of graphic design and is weak.
Some clubs had to change when it was decreed unlawful to use a coat of arms which belonged to a City for example. Hence Blues bollocks badge ( truly awful).
We didn't, so why did we depart from the original shield and scroll fifties/sixties crest which hadn't changed much since the late 1800's.
-
Arsenal changed their badge a few years ago. I remember a news report about a fan who had just had a tattoo done of the then-current badge and the following week (or possibly even day) Arsenal introduced a new one with the cannon facing the other direction.

I seem to remember the same bloke reportedly had a tattoo of Merson done the week before he was sold as well.

On the subject of badges, I have found a great use for the season ticket badge the club has provided.
As I have to wear a suit for work most of the time [especially when visiting customers] I can wear the little badge on the lapel of my jacket without is being obvious that it is a Villa badge. Its a great conversation piece when someone asks me what is is.
-
A lot of clubs changed their badges due to copyright issues, I think it was one of the reason Arsenal did it. Also the badges have to be used in so many different ways now that some traditional crests etc don't work very well on screen, mobile etc etc...
We aren't the only ones who have messed around with badges though, off the top of my head Leeds, Arsenal and Man City have all changed their badges around a lot.
-

Yes. And how many supporters can say THAT?

I remember when I was doing some tutoring work a couple of years ago, and after I'd gone into an office to train a couple of people, the subject got on to football. On my suit, I was wearing a little silver lion rampant that I'd bought outside VP a couple of weeks previously. The girl I taught asked me who I followed and I tapped the badge and said I was a Villa fan.
"Oh," she said. "I thought you really like Peugeot."
-
As has been mentioned it probably depends on which era you grew up in but it's this one for me. A thing of beauty. It instantly brings to mind memories of League Cup finals, Yorke in his pomp, Brian Little, etc. It forever tied the word 'prepared' to Villa for me.
I don't mind the current badge, it's clean and modern. I'm not one who has problems with the font either. I would have had "Aston Villa" rather than AVFC though.

When we first moved over here we test drove a Peugeot (fancy paying 30K for a 407?). Both kids wanted it because "it's an Aston Villa car"
